29 When the time (A)drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Now if I have found favor in your sight, please (B)put your hand under my thigh, and (C)deal kindly and truly with me. (D)Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but (E)let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and (F)bury me in their burial place.”

And he said, “I will do as you have said.”

31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So (G)Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons(H)

48 Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told, “Indeed your father is sick”; and he took with him his two sons, (I)Manasseh and Ephraim. And Jacob was told, “Look, your son Joseph is coming to you”; and Israel [a]strengthened himself and sat up on the bed. Then Jacob said to Joseph: “God (J)Almighty appeared to me at (K)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will (L)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and (M)give this land to your descendants after you (N)as an everlasting possession.’ And now your (O)two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. Your [b]offspring [c]whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. But as for me, when I came from Padan, (P)Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

Then Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, “Who are these?”

Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place.

And he said, “Please bring them to me, and (Q)I will bless them.” 10 Now (R)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them near him, and he (S)kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (T)“I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has also shown me your offspring!”

12 So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him. 14 Then Israel stretched out his right hand and (U)laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, (V)guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the (W)firstborn. 15 And (X)he blessed Joseph, and said:

“God, (Y)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
16 The Angel (Z)who has redeemed me from all evil,
Bless the lads;
Let (AA)my name be named upon them,
And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And let them (AB)grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

17 Now when Joseph saw that his father (AC)laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

19 But his father refused and said, (AD)“I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly (AE)his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”

20 So he blessed them that day, saying, (AF)“By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ ” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but (AG)God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover (AH)I have given to you one [d]portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand (AI)of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”

Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons

49 And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may (AJ)tell you what shall befall you (AK)in the last days:

“Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,
And listen to Israel your father.

“Reuben, you are (AL)my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you (AM)went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it
He went up to my couch.

“Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Instruments of [e]cruelty are in their dwelling place.
(AN)Let not my soul enter their council;
Let not my honor be united (AO)to their assembly;
(AP)For in their anger they slew a man,
And in their self-will they [f]hamstrung an ox.
Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel!
(AQ)I will divide them in Jacob
And scatter them in Israel.

“Judah,(AR) you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
(AS)Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(AT)Your father’s children shall bow down before you.
Judah is (AU)a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(AV)He [g]bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
10 (AW)The [h]scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor (AX)a lawgiver from between his feet,
(AY)Until Shiloh comes;
(AZ)And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
11 Binding his donkey to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are darker than wine,
And his teeth whiter than milk.

13 “Zebulun(BA) shall dwell by the haven of the sea;
He shall become a haven for ships,
And his border shall (BB)adjoin Sidon.

14 “Issachar(BC) is a strong donkey,
Lying down between two burdens;
15 He saw that rest was good,
And that the land was pleasant;
He bowed (BD)his shoulder to bear a burden,
And became a band of slaves.

16 “Dan(BE) shall judge his people
As one of the tribes of Israel.
17 (BF)Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
A viper by the path,
That bites the horse’s heels
So that its rider shall fall backward.
18 (BG)I have waited for your salvation, O Lord!

19 “Gad,(BH)[i] a troop shall [j]tramp upon him,
But he shall triumph at last.

20 “Bread from (BI)Asher shall be rich,
And he shall yield royal dainties.

21 “Naphtali(BJ) is a deer let loose;
He uses beautiful words.

22 “Joseph is a fruitful bough,
A fruitful bough by a well;
His branches run over the wall.
23 The archers have (BK)bitterly grieved him,
Shot at him and hated him.
24 But his (BL)bow remained in strength,
And the arms of his hands were [k]made strong
By the hands of (BM)the Mighty God of Jacob
(BN)(From there (BO)is the Shepherd, (BP)the Stone of Israel),
25 (BQ)By the God of your father who will help you,
(BR)And by the Almighty (BS)who will bless you
With blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors,
(BT)Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
(BU)They shall be on the head of Joseph,
And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

27 “Benjamin is a (BV)ravenous wolf;
In the morning he shall devour the prey,
(BW)And at night he shall divide the spoil.”

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.

Jacob’s Death and Burial

29 Then he charged them and said to them: “I (BX)am to be gathered to my people; (BY)bury me with my fathers (BZ)in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, (CA)which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place. 31 (CB)There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, (CC)there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave that is there were purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

29 When the time drew near for Israel(A) to die,(B) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(C) put your hand under my thigh(D) and promise that you will show me kindness(E) and faithfulness.(F) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(G) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(H)

“I will do as you say,” he said.

31 “Swear to me,”(I) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(J) and Israel(K) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[a](L)

Manasseh and Ephraim

48 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim(M) along with him. When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(N) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[b](O) appeared to me at Luz(P) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(Q) and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(R) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(S) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(T)

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(U) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(V) just as Reuben(W) and Simeon(X) are mine. Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. As I was returning from Paddan,[c](Y) to my sorrow(Z) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(AA)

When Israel(AB) saw the sons of Joseph,(AC) he asked, “Who are these?”

“They are the sons God has given me here,”(AD) Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless(AE) them.”

10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.(AF) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them(AG) and embraced them.(AH)

11 Israel(AI) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,(AJ) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”(AK)

12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees(AL) and bowed down with his face to the ground.(AM) 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,(AN) and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel(AO) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,(AP) though he was the younger,(AQ) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.(AR)

15 Then he blessed(AS) Joseph and said,

“May the God before whom my fathers
    Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,(AT)
the God who has been my shepherd(AU)
    all my life to this day,
16 the Angel(AV) who has delivered me from all harm(AW)
    —may he bless(AX) these boys.(AY)
May they be called by my name
    and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,(AZ)
and may they increase greatly
    on the earth.”(BA)

17 When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand(BB) on Ephraim’s head(BC) he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”(BD)

19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great.(BE) Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he,(BF) and his descendants will become a group of nations.(BG) 20 He blessed(BH) them that day(BI) and said,

“In your[d] name will Israel(BJ) pronounce this blessing:(BK)
    ‘May God make you like Ephraim(BL) and Manasseh.(BM)’”

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you[e](BN) and take you[f] back to the land of your[g] fathers.(BO) 22 And to you I give one more ridge of land[h](BP) than to your brothers,(BQ) the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword(BR) and my bow.”

Jacob Blesses His Sons(BS)

49 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.(BT)

“Assemble(BU) and listen, sons of Jacob;
    listen to your father Israel.(BV)

“Reuben, you are my firstborn,(BW)
    my might, the first sign of my strength,(BX)
    excelling in honor,(BY) excelling in power.
Turbulent as the waters,(BZ) you will no longer excel,
    for you went up onto your father’s bed,
    onto my couch and defiled it.(CA)

“Simeon(CB) and Levi(CC) are brothers—
    their swords[i] are weapons of violence.(CD)
Let me not enter their council,
    let me not join their assembly,(CE)
for they have killed men in their anger(CF)
    and hamstrung(CG) oxen as they pleased.
Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
    and their fury,(CH) so cruel!(CI)
I will scatter them in Jacob
    and disperse them in Israel.(CJ)

“Judah,[j](CK) your brothers will praise you;
    your hand will be on the neck(CL) of your enemies;
    your father’s sons will bow down to you.(CM)
You are a lion’s(CN) cub,(CO) Judah;(CP)
    you return from the prey,(CQ) my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
    like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,(CR)
    nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[k]
until he to whom it belongs[l] shall come(CS)
    and the obedience of the nations shall be his.(CT)
11 He will tether his donkey(CU) to a vine,
    his colt to the choicest branch;(CV)
he will wash his garments in wine,

    lying down among the sheep pens.[o](DB)

17 Dan(DH) will be a snake by the roadside,

    so that its rider tumbles backward.

18 “I look for your deliverance,(DK) Lord.(DL)

19 “Gad[q](DM) will be attacked by a band of raiders,
    but he will attack them at their heels.(DN)

20 “Asher’s(DO) food will be rich;(DP)
    he will provide delicacies fit for a king.(DQ)

21 “Naphtali(DR) is a doe set free
    that bears beautiful fawns.[r](DS)

22 “Joseph(DT) is a fruitful vine,(DU)
    a fruitful vine near a spring,
    whose branches(DV) climb over a wall.[s]
23 With bitterness archers attacked him;(DW)
    they shot at him with hostility.(DX)
24 But his bow remained steady,(DY)
    his strong arms(DZ) stayed[t] limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,(EA)
    because of the Shepherd,(EB) the Rock of Israel,(EC)
25 because of your father’s God,(ED) who helps(EE) you,
    because of the Almighty,[u](EF) who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
    blessings of the deep springs below,(EG)
    blessings of the breast(EH) and womb.(EI)
26 Your father’s blessings are greater

27 “Benjamin(EM) is a ravenous wolf;(EN)

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel,(EQ) and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing(ER) appropriate to him.

The Death of Jacob

29 Then he gave them these instructions:(ES) “I am about to be gathered to my people.(ET) Bury me with my fathers(EU) in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,(EV) 30 the cave in the field of Machpelah,(EW) near Mamre(EX) in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field(EY) as a burial place(EZ) from Ephron the Hittite. 31 There Abraham(FA) and his wife Sarah(FB) were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah(FC) were buried, and there I buried Leah.(FD) 32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.[x](FE)

33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.(FF)
