17 When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him again and said, “I am God All-Powerful. If you obey me and always do right,

³ I pray that God All-Powerful will bless you with many descendants and let you become a great nation.

God Blesses Jacob at Bethel

^9-11 (A)(B) After Jacob came back to the land of Canaan, God appeared to him again. This time he gave Jacob a new name and blessed him by saying:

I am God All-Powerful, and from now on your name will be Israel^[a] instead of Jacob. You will have many children. Your descendants will become nations, and some of the men in your family will even be kings.

^13 (A) Moses answered, “I will tell the people of Israel that the God their ancestors worshiped has sent me to them. But what should I say, if they ask me your name?”

^14-15 (B) God said to Moses:

I am the eternal God. So tell them that the Lord,^[a] whose name is “I Am,” has sent you. This is my name forever, and it is the name that people must use from now on.
