17 Now Ephron’s field that is in Machpelah next to Mamre—the field and the cave that is in it, and all the trees that are in the field in all its surrounding territory—was handed over 18 to Abraham as a purchased possession in the eyes of the sons of Heth, before all those who enter the gate of his city.

19 Afterward, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave that was in it were handed over to Abraham as a gravesite from the sons of Heth.

Courting of Rebekah

24 Now Abraham was old, advanced in years, and Adonai blessed Abraham in everything. Then Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household who managed everything that belonged to him, “Now put your hand under my thigh, so that I may make you take an oath by Adonai, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from among the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am dwelling. On the contrary, to my land and to my relatives you must go and get a wife for my son Isaac.

But the servant said to him, “Suppose the woman were unwilling to follow after me to this land? Should I then have your son go back to the land you came from?

Abraham said to him, “See to it that you don’t return my son there. Adonai, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from my native land and who spoke to me and made a pledge to me saying, ‘To your seed I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you and you will take a wife for my son from there. If the woman is not willing to follow after you, then you will be free from this oath of mine. Nevertheless, you must not return my son there.” So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and he made a pledge to him concerning this matter.

17 So Ephron’s field in Machpelah(A) near Mamre(B)—both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field—was deeded 18 to Abraham as his property(C) in the presence of all the Hittites(D) who had come to the gate(E) of the city. 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah(F) near Mamre (which is at Hebron(G)) in the land of Canaan.(H) 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded(I) to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.(J)

Isaac and Rebekah

24 Abraham was now very old,(K) and the Lord had blessed(L) him in every way.(M) He said to the senior servant(N) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,(O) “Put your hand under my thigh.(P) I want you to swear(Q) by the Lord, the God of heaven(R) and the God of earth,(S) that you will not get a wife for my son(T) from the daughters of the Canaanites,(U) among whom I am living,(V) but will go to my country and my own relatives(W) and get a wife for my son Isaac.(X)

The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?(Y) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?(Z)

“Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”(AA) Abraham said. “The Lord, the God of heaven,(AB) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land(AC) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring[a](AD) I will give this land’(AE)—he will send his angel before you(AF) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath(AG) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”(AH) So the servant put his hand under the thigh(AI) of his master(AJ) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
