And we still have the promise that God gave those people. That promise is that we can enter his place of rest. So we should be very careful that none of you fails to get that promise. Yes, the good news about it was told to us just as it was to them. But the message they heard did not help them. They heard it but did not accept it with faith. Only we who believe it are able to enter God’s place of rest. As God said,

“I was angry and made a promise:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’” (A)

But God’s work was finished from the time he made the world. Yes, somewhere in the Scriptures he talked about the seventh day of the week. He said, “So on the seventh day God rested from all his work.”[a] But in the Scripture above God said, “They will never enter my place of rest.”

So the opportunity is still there for some to enter and enjoy God’s rest. But those who first heard the good news about it did not enter, because they did not obey. So God planned another special day. It is called “today.” He spoke about that day through David a long time later using the words we quoted before:

“If you hear God’s voice today,
    don’t be stubborn.” (B)

We know that Joshua did not lead the people into the place of rest that God promised. We know this because God spoke later about another day for rest. This shows that the seventh-day rest[b] for God’s people is still to come. 10 God rested after he finished his work. So everyone who enters God’s place of rest will also have rest from their own work just as God did. 11 So let us try as hard as we can to enter God’s place of rest. We must try hard so that none of us will be lost by following the example of those who refused to obey God.

12 God’s word[c] is alive and working. It is sharper than the sharpest sword and cuts all the way into us. It cuts deep to the place where the soul and the spirit are joined. God’s word cuts to the center of our joints and our bones. It judges the thoughts and feelings in our hearts. 13 Nothing in all the world can be hidden from God. He can clearly see all things. Everything is open before him. And to him we must explain the way we have lived.

Jesus Christ Is Our High Priest

14 We have a great high priest who has gone to live with God in heaven. He is Jesus the Son of God. So let us continue to express our faith in him. 15 Jesus, our high priest, is able to understand our weaknesses. When Jesus lived on earth, he was tempted in every way. He was tempted in the same ways we are tempted, but he never sinned. 16 With Jesus as our high priest, we can feel free to come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we receive mercy and kindness to help us when we need it.

Every Jewish high priest is chosen from among men. That priest is given the work of helping people with the things they must do for God. He must offer to God gifts and sacrifices for sins. The high priest has his own weaknesses. So he is able to be gentle with those who do wrong out of ignorance. He offers sacrifices for their sins, but he must also offer sacrifices for his own sins.

To be a high priest is an honor. But no one chooses himself for this work. That person must be chosen by God just as Aaron was. It is the same with Christ. He did not choose himself to have the honor of becoming a high priest. But God chose him. God said to him,

“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.” (C)

And in another part of the Scriptures God says,

“You are a priest forever—
the kind of priest Melchizedek was.” (D)

While Jesus lived on earth he prayed to God, asking for help from the one who could save him from death. He prayed to God with loud cries and tears. And his prayers were answered because of his great respect for God. Jesus was the Son of God, but he still suffered, and through his sufferings he learned to obey whatever God says. This made him the perfect high priest, who provides the way for everyone who obeys him to be saved forever. 10 God made him high priest, just like Melchizedek.

Warning Against Falling Away

11 We have many things to tell you about this. But it is hard to explain because you have stopped trying to understand. 12 You have had enough time that by now you should be teachers. But you need someone to teach you again the first lessons of God’s teaching. You still need the teaching that is like milk. You are not ready for solid food. 13 Anyone who lives on milk is still a baby and is not able to understand much about living right. 14 But solid food is for people who have grown up. From their experience they have learned to see the difference between good and evil.

So we should be finished with the beginning lessons about Christ. We should not have to keep going back to where we started. We began our new life by turning away from the evil we did in the past and by believing in God. That’s when we were taught about baptisms,[d] laying hands on people,[e] the resurrection of those who have died, and the final judgment. Now we need to go forward to more mature teaching. And that’s what we will do if God allows.

4-6 After people have left the way of Christ, can you make them change their lives again? I am talking about people who once learned the truth, received God’s gift, and shared in the Holy Spirit. They were blessed to hear God’s good message and see the great power of his new world. But then they left it all behind, and it is not possible to make them change again. That’s because those who leave Christ are nailing him to the cross again, shaming him before everyone.

Some people are like land that gets plenty of rain and produces a good crop for those who farm it. That kind of land has God’s blessing. But other people are like land that grows only thorns and weeds. It is worthless and in danger of being cursed by God. It will be destroyed by fire.

Dear friends, I am not saying this because I think it is happening to you. We really expect that you will do better—that you will do the good things that will result in your salvation. 10 God is fair, and he will remember all the work you have done. He will remember that you showed your love to him by helping his people and that you continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to be willing and eager to show your love like that the rest of your life. Then you will be sure to get what you hope for. 12 We don’t want you to be lazy. We want you to be like those who, because of their faith and patience, will get what God has promised.

13 God made a promise to Abraham. And there is no one greater than God, so he made the promise with an oath in his own name—an oath that he would do what he promised. 14 He said, “I will surely bless you. I will give you many descendants.”[f] 15 Abraham waited patiently for this to happen, and later he received what God promised.

16 People always use the name of someone greater than themselves to make a promise with an oath. The oath proves that what they say is true, and there is no more arguing about it. 17 God wanted to prove that his promise was true. He wanted to prove this to those who would get what he promised. He wanted them to understand clearly that his purposes never change. So God said something would happen, and he proved what he said by adding an oath. 18 These two things cannot change: God cannot lie when he says something, and he cannot lie when he makes an oath.

So these two things are a great help to us who have come to God for safety. They encourage us to hold on to the hope that is ours. 19 This hope is like an anchor for us. It is strong and sure and keeps us safe. It goes behind the curtain.[g] 20 Jesus has already entered there and opened the way for us. He has become the high priest forever, just like Melchizedek.

The Priest Melchizedek

Melchizedek was the king of Salem and a priest for God the Most High. He met Abraham when Abraham was coming back after defeating the kings. That day Melchizedek blessed him. Then Abraham gave him a tenth of everything he had.

The name Melchizedek, king of Salem, has two meanings. First, Melchizedek means “king of justice.” And “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” No one knows who his father or mother was or where he came from.[h] And no one knows when he was born or when he died. Melchizedek is like the Son of God in that he will always be a priest.

You can see that Melchizedek was very great. Abraham, our great ancestor, gave him a tenth of everything he won in battle. Now the law says that those from the tribe of Levi who become priests must get a tenth from their own people, even though they and their people are both from the family of Abraham. Melchizedek was not even from the tribe of Levi, but Abraham gave him a tenth of what he had. And Melchizedek blessed Abraham—the one who had God’s promises. And everyone knows that the more important person always blesses the less important person.

Those priests get a tenth, but they are only men who live and then die. But Melchizedek, who got a tenth from Abraham, continues to live, as the Scriptures say. Now those from the family of Levi are the ones who get a tenth from the people. But we can say that when Abraham paid Melchizedek a tenth, then Levi also paid it. 10 Levi was not yet born, but he already existed in his ancestor Abraham when Melchizedek met him.

11 The people were given the law under the system of priests from the tribe of Levi. But no one could be made spiritually perfect through that system of priests. So there was a need for another priest to come. I mean a priest like Melchizedek, not Aaron. 12 And when a different kind of priest comes, then the law must be changed too. 13-14 We are talking about our Lord Christ, who belonged to a different tribe. No one from that tribe ever served as a priest at the altar. It is clear that Christ came from the tribe of Judah. And Moses said nothing about priests belonging to that tribe.

Jesus Is a Priest Like Melchizedek

15 And these things become even clearer when we see that another priest has come who is like Melchizedek. 16 He was made a priest, but not because he met the requirement of being born into the right family. He became a priest by the power of a life that will never end. 17 This is what the Scriptures say about him: “You are a priest forever—the kind of priest Melchizedek was.”[i]

18 The old rule is now ended because it was weak and worthless. 19 The Law of Moses could not make anything perfect. But now a better hope has been given to us. And with that hope we can come near to God.

20 Also, it is important that God made a promise with an oath when he made Jesus high priest. When those other men became priests, there was no oath. 21 But Christ became a priest with God’s oath. God said to him,

“The Lord has made a promise with an oath
and will not change his mind:
‘You are a priest forever.’” (E)

22 So this means that Jesus is the guarantee of a better agreement from God to his people.

23 Also, when one of those other priests died, he could not continue being a priest. So there were many of those priests. 24 But Jesus lives forever. He will never stop serving as a priest. 25 So Christ can save those who come to God through him. Christ can do this forever, because he always lives and is ready to help people when they come before God.

26 So Jesus is the kind of high priest we need. He is holy. He has no sin in him. He is pure and not influenced by sinners. And he is raised above the heavens. 27 He is not like those other priests. They had to offer sacrifices every day, first for their own sins, and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus doesn’t need to do that. He offered only one sacrifice for all time. He offered himself. 28 The law chooses high priests who are men and have the same weaknesses that all people have. But after the law, God spoke the oath that made his Son high priest. And that Son, made perfect through suffering, will serve forever.

Jesus Our High Priest

Here is the point of what we are saying: We have a high priest like that, who sits on the right side[j] of God’s throne in heaven. Our high priest serves in the Most Holy Place.[k] He serves in the true place of worship[l] that was made by God, not by anyone here on earth.

Every high priest has the work of offering gifts and sacrifices to God. So our high priest must also offer something to God. If our high priest were now living on earth, he would not be a priest. I say this because there are already priests here who follow the law by offering gifts to God. The work that these priests do is really only a copy and a shadow of what is in heaven. That is why God warned Moses when he was ready to build the Holy Tent: “Be sure to make everything exactly like the pattern I showed you on the mountain.”[m] But the work that has been given to Jesus is much greater than the work that was given to those priests. In the same way, the new agreement that Jesus brought from God to his people is much greater than the old one. And the new agreement is based on better promises.

If there was nothing wrong with the first agreement, then there would be no need for a second agreement. But God found something wrong with the people. He said,

“The time is coming, says the Lord,
when I will give a new agreement
to the people of Israel and to the people of Judah.
It will not be like the agreement
that I gave to their fathers.
That is the agreement I gave when I took them by the hand
and led them out of Egypt.
They did not continue following the agreement I gave them,
and I turned away from them, says the Lord.
10 This is the new agreement I will give the people of Israel.
I will give this agreement in the future, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their minds,
and I will write my laws on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
11 Never again will anyone have to teach their neighbors
or their family to know the Lord.
All people—the greatest and the least important—will know me.
12 And I will forgive the wrongs they have done,
and I will not remember their sins.” (F)

13 God called this a new agreement, so he has made the first agreement old. And anything that is old and useless is ready to disappear.

Worship Under the Old Agreement

The first agreement had rules for worship and a place for worship here on earth. This place was inside a tent. The first area in the tent was called the Holy Place. In the Holy Place were the lamp and the table with the special bread offered to God. Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place. In the Most Holy Place was a golden altar for burning incense. And also there was the Box of the Agreement. The Box was covered with gold. Inside this Box was a golden jar of manna and Aaron’s rod—the rod that once grew leaves. Also in the Box were the flat stones with the Ten Commandments of the old agreement on them. Above the Box were the Cherub angels that showed God’s glory. These Cherub angels were over the place of mercy.[n] But we cannot say everything about this now.

Everything in the tent was made ready in the way I have explained. Then the priests went into the first room every day to do their worship duties. But only the high priest could go into the second room, and he went in only once a year. Also, he could never enter that room without taking blood with him. He offered that blood to God for himself and for the sins the people committed without knowing they were sinning.

The Holy Spirit uses those two separate rooms to teach us that the way into the Most Holy Place[o] was not open while the first room was still there. This is an example for us today. It shows that the gifts and sacrifices the priests offer to God are not able to make the consciences of the worshipers completely clear. 10 These gifts and sacrifices are only about food and drink and special washings. They are only rules about the body. God gave them for his people to follow until the time of his new way.

Worship Under the New Agreement

11 But Christ has already come to be the high priest. He is the high priest of the good things we now have. But Christ does not serve in a place like the tent that those other priests served in. He serves in a better place. Unlike that tent, this one is perfect. It was not made by anyone here on earth. It does not belong to this world. 12 Christ entered the Most Holy Place only one time—enough for all time. He entered the Most Holy Place by using his own blood, not the blood of goats or young bulls. He entered there and made us free from sin forever.

13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a cow were sprinkled on those who were no longer pure enough to enter the place of worship. The blood and ashes made them pure again—but only their bodies. 14 So surely the blood sacrifice of Christ can do much more. Christ offered himself through the eternal Spirit[p] as a perfect sacrifice to God. His blood will make us completely clean from the evil we have done. It will give us clear consciences so that we can worship the living God.

15 So Christ brings a new agreement from God to his people. He brings this agreement so that those who are chosen by God can have the blessings God promised, blessings that last forever. This can happen only because Christ died to free people from sins committed against the commands of the first agreement.

16 When someone dies and leaves a will, there must be proof that the one who wrote the will is dead. 17 A will means nothing while the one who wrote it is still living. It can be used only after that person’s death. 18 That is why blood was needed to begin the first agreement between God and his people. 19 First, Moses told the people every command in the law. Then he took the blood of young bulls and mixed it with water. He used red wool and a branch of hyssop to sprinkle the blood and water on the book of the law and on all the people. 20 Then he said, “This is the blood that makes the agreement good—the agreement that God commanded you to follow.”[q] 21 In the same way, Moses sprinkled the blood on the Holy Tent. He sprinkled the blood over everything used in worship. 22 The law says that almost everything must be made clean by blood. Sins cannot be forgiven without a blood sacrifice.

Jesus Christ Is Our Sacrifice for Sin

23 These things are copies of the real things that are in heaven. These copies had to be made clean by animal sacrifices. But the real things in heaven must have much better sacrifices. 24 Christ went into the Most Holy Place. But it was not the man-made one, which is only a copy of the real one. He went into heaven, and he is there now before God to help us.

25 The high priest enters the Most Holy Place once every year. He takes with him blood to offer. But he does not offer his own blood like Christ did. Christ went into heaven, but not to offer himself many times like the high priest offers blood again and again. 26 If Christ had offered himself many times, he would have needed to suffer many times since the time the world was made. But he came to offer himself only once. And that once is enough for all time. He came at a time when the world is nearing an end. He came to take away all sin by offering himself as a sacrifice.

27 Everyone must die once. Then they are judged. 28 So Christ was offered as a sacrifice one time to take away the sins of many people. And he will come a second time, but not to offer himself for sin. He will come the second time to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Jesus Christ—the Only Sacrifice We Need

10 The law gave us only an unclear picture of the good things coming in the future. The law is not a perfect picture of the real things. The law tells people to offer the same sacrifices every year. Those who come to worship God continue to offer those sacrifices. But the law can never make them perfect. If the law could make people perfect, those sacrifices would have already stopped. They would already be clean from their sins, and they would not still feel guilty. But that’s not what happens. Their sacrifices make them remember their sins every year, because it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

So when Christ came into the world he said,

“You don’t want sacrifices and offerings,
but you have prepared a body for me.
You are not pleased with the sacrifices of animals killed and burned
or with offerings to take away sins.
Then I said, ‘Here I am, God.
It is written about me in the book of the law.
I have come to do what you want.’” (G)

Christ first said, “You don’t want sacrifices and offerings. You are not pleased with animals killed and burned or with sacrifices to take away sin.” (These are all sacrifices that the law commands.) Then he said, “Here I am, God. I have come to do what you want.” So God ends that first system of sacrifices and starts his new way. 10 Jesus Christ did the things God wanted him to do. And because of that, we are made holy through the sacrifice of Christ’s body. Christ made that sacrifice one time—enough for all time.

11 Every day the priests stand and do their religious service. Again and again they offer the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But Christ offered only one sacrifice for sins, and that sacrifice is good for all time. Then he sat down at the right side of God. 13 And now Christ waits there for his enemies to be put under his power.[r] 14 With one sacrifice Christ made his people perfect forever. They are the ones who are being made holy.

15 The Holy Spirit also tells us about this. First he says,

16 “This is the agreement[s] I will make
with my people in the future, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts.
I will write my laws in their minds.” (H)

17 Then he says,

“I will forget their sins
and never again remember the evil they have done.” (I)

18 And after everything is forgiven, there is no more need for a sacrifice to pay for sins.

Come Near to God

19 And so, brothers and sisters, we are completely free to enter the Most Holy Place.[t] We can do this without fear because of the blood sacrifice of Jesus. 20 We enter through a new way that Jesus opened for us. It is a living way that leads through the curtain—Christ’s body. 21 And we have a great priest who rules the house of God. 22 Sprinkled with the blood of Christ, our hearts have been made free from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. So come near to God with a sincere heart, full of confidence because of our faith in Christ. 23 We must hold on to the hope we have, never hesitating to tell people about it. We can trust God to do what he promised.

Help Each Other Be Strong

24 We should think about each other to see how we can encourage each other to show love and do good works. 25 We must not quit meeting together, as some are doing. No, we need to keep on encouraging each other. This becomes more and more important as you see the Day getting closer.

Don’t Turn Away From God’s Son

26 If we decide to continue sinning after we have learned the truth, then there is no other sacrifice that will take away sins. 27 If we continue sinning, all that is left for us is a fearful time of waiting for the judgment and the angry fire that will destroy those who live against God. 28 Whoever refused to obey the Law of Moses was found guilty from the testimony given by two or three witnesses. Such people were not forgiven. They were killed. 29 So think how much more punishment people deserve who show their hate for the Son of God—people who show they have no respect for the blood sacrifice that began the new agreement and once made them holy or who insult the Spirit of God’s grace. 30 We know that God said, “I will punish people for the wrongs they do; I will repay them.”[u] And he also said, “The Lord will judge his people.”[v] 31 It is a terrible thing to face punishment from the living God.

Keep the Courage and Patience You Had

32 Remember the days when you first learned the truth. You had a hard struggle with much suffering, but you continued strong. 33 Sometimes people said hateful things to you and mistreated you in public. And sometimes you helped others who were being treated that same way. 34 Yes, you helped them in prison and shared in their suffering. And you were still happy when everything you owned was taken away from you. You continued to be happy, because you knew that you had something much better—something that would continue forever.

35 So don’t lose the courage that you had in the past. Your courage will be rewarded richly. 36 You must be patient. After you have done what God wants, you will get what he promised you. 37 He says,

“Very soon now, the one who is coming
will come and will not be late.
38 The person who is right with me
will live by trusting in me.
But I will not be pleased with the one
who turns back in fear.” (J)

39 But we are not those who turn back and are lost. No, we are the people who have faith and are saved.

Faith

11 Faith is what makes real the things we hope for. It is proof of what we cannot see. God was pleased with the people who lived a long time ago because they had faith like this.

Faith helps us understand that God created the whole world by his command. This means that the things we see were made by something that cannot be seen.

Cain and Abel both offered sacrifices to God. But Abel offered a better sacrifice to God because he had faith. God said he was pleased with what Abel offered. And so God called him a good man because he had faith. Abel died, but through his faith he is still speaking.

Enoch was carried away from this earth, so he never died. The Scriptures tell us that before he was carried off, he was a man who pleased God. Later, no one knew where he was, because God had taken Enoch to be with him. This all happened because he had faith. Without faith no one can please God. Whoever comes to God must believe that he is real and that he rewards those who sincerely try to find him.

Noah was warned by God about things that he could not yet see. But he had faith and respect for God, so he built a large boat to save his family. With his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong. And he became one of those who are made right with God through faith.

God called Abraham to travel to another place that he promised to give him. Abraham did not know where that other place was. But he obeyed God and started traveling because he had faith. Abraham lived in the country that God promised to give him. He lived there like a visitor who did not belong. He did this because he had faith. He lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who also received the same promise from God. 10 Abraham was waiting for the city[w] that has real foundations. He was waiting for the city that is planned and built by God.

11 Sarah was not able to have children, and Abraham was too old. But he had faith in God, trusting him to do what he promised. And so God made them able to have children. 12 Abraham was so old he was almost dead. But from that one man came as many descendants as there are stars in the sky. So many people came from him that they are like grains of sand on the seashore.

13 All these great people continued living with faith until they died. They did not get the things God promised his people. But they were happy just to see those promises coming far in the future. They accepted the fact that they were like visitors and strangers here on earth. 14 When people accept something like that, they show they are waiting for a country that will be their own. 15 If they were thinking about the country they had left, they could have gone back. 16 But they were waiting for a better country—a heavenly country. So God is not ashamed to be called their God. And he has prepared a city for them.

17-18 God tested Abraham’s faith. God told him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. Abraham obeyed because he had faith. He already had the promises from God. And God had already said to him, “It is through Isaac that your descendants will come.”[x] But Abraham was ready to offer his only son. He did this because he had faith. 19 He believed that God could raise people from death. And really, when God stopped Abraham from killing Isaac, it was as if he got him back from death.

20 Isaac blessed the future of Jacob and Esau. He did that because he had faith. 21 And Jacob, also because he had faith, blessed each one of Joseph’s sons. He did this while he was dying, leaning on his rod and worshiping God.

22 And when Joseph was almost dead, he spoke about the people of Israel leaving Egypt. And he told them what they should do with his body. He did this because he had faith.

23 And the mother and father of Moses hid him for three months after he was born. They did this because they had faith. They saw that Moses was a beautiful baby. And they were not afraid to disobey the king’s order.

24-25 Moses grew up and became a man. He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose not to enjoy the pleasures of sin that last such a short time. Instead, he chose to suffer with God’s people. He did this because he had faith. 26 He thought it was better to suffer for the Messiah than to have all the treasures of Egypt. He was waiting for the reward that God would give him.

27 Moses left Egypt because he had faith. He was not afraid of the king’s anger. He continued strong as if he could see the God no one can see. 28 Moses prepared the Passover and spread the blood on the doorways of the people of Israel, so that the angel of death[y] would not kill their firstborn sons. Moses did this because he had faith.

29 And God’s people all walked through the Red Sea as if it were dry land. They were able to do this because they had faith. But when the Egyptians tried to follow them, they were drowned.

30 And the walls of Jericho fell because of the faith of God’s people. They marched around the walls for seven days, and then the walls fell.

31 And Rahab, the prostitute, welcomed the Israelite spies like friends. And because of her faith, she was not killed with the ones who refused to obey.

32 Do I need to give you more examples? I don’t have enough time to tell you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. 33 All of them had great faith. And with that faith they defeated kingdoms. They did what was right, and God helped them in the ways he promised. With their faith some people closed the mouths of lions. 34 And some were able to stop blazing fires. Others escaped from being killed with swords. Some who were weak were made strong. They became powerful in battle and defeated other armies. 35 There were women who lost loved ones but got them back when they were raised from death. Others were tortured but refused to accept their freedom. They did this so that they could be raised from death to a better life. 36 Some were laughed at and beaten. Others were tied up and put in prison. 37 They were killed with stones. They were cut in half. They were killed with swords. The only clothes some of them had were sheepskins or goatskins. They were poor, persecuted, and treated badly by others. 38 The world was not good enough for these great people. They had to wander in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the ground.

39 God was pleased with all of them because of their faith. But not one of them received God’s great promise. 40 God planned something better for us. He wanted to make us perfect. Of course, he wanted those great people to be made perfect too, but not before we could all enjoy that blessing together.

We Also Should Follow Jesus’ Example

12 We have all these great people around us as examples. Their lives tell us what faith means. So we, too, should run the race that is before us and never quit. We should remove from our lives anything that would slow us down and the sin that so often makes us fall. We must never stop looking to Jesus. He is the leader of our faith, and he is the one who makes our faith complete. He suffered death on a cross. But he accepted the shame of the cross as if it were nothing because of the joy he could see waiting for him. And now he is sitting at the right side of God’s throne. Think about Jesus. He patiently endured the angry insults that sinful people were shouting at him. Think about him so that you won’t get discouraged and stop trying.

God Is Like a Father

You are struggling against sin, but you have not had to give up your life for the cause. You are children of God, and he speaks words of comfort to you. You have forgotten these words:

“My child, don’t think the Lord’s discipline is worth nothing,
and don’t stop trying when he corrects you.
The Lord disciplines everyone he loves;
he punishes everyone he accepts as a child.” (K)

So accept sufferings like a father’s discipline. God does these things to you like a father correcting his children. You know that all children are disciplined by their fathers. So, if you never receive the discipline that every child must have, you are not true children and don’t really belong to God. We have all had fathers here on earth who corrected us with discipline. And we respected them. So it is even more important that we accept discipline from the Father of our spirits. If we do this, we will have life. 10 Our fathers on earth disciplined us for a short time in the way they thought was best. But God disciplines us to help us so that we can be holy like him. 11 We don’t enjoy discipline when we get it. It is painful. But later, after we have learned our lesson from it, we will enjoy the peace that comes from doing what is right.

Be Careful How You Live

12 You have become weak, so make yourselves strong again. 13 Live in the right way so that you will be saved and your weakness will not cause you to be lost.

14 Try to live in peace with everyone. And try to keep your lives free from sin. Anyone whose life is not holy will never see the Lord. 15 Be careful that no one fails to get God’s grace. Be careful that no one loses their faith and becomes like a bitter weed growing among you. Someone like that can ruin your whole group. 16 Be careful that no one commits sexual sin. And be careful that no one is like Esau and never thinks about God. As the oldest son, Esau would have inherited everything from his father. But he sold all that for a single meal. 17 You remember that after Esau did this, he wanted to get his father’s blessing. He wanted that blessing so much that he cried. But his father refused to give him the blessing, because Esau could find no way to change what he had done.

18 You have not come to a place that can be seen and touched, like the mountain the people of Israel saw, which was burning with fire and covered with darkness, gloom, and storms. 19 There is no sound of a trumpet or a voice speaking words like those they heard. When they heard the voice, they begged never to hear another word. 20 They did not want to hear the command: “If anything, even an animal, touches the mountain, it must be killed with stones.”[z] 21 What they saw was so terrible that Moses said, “I am shaking with fear.”[aa][ab]

22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.[ac] You have come to a place where thousands of angels have gathered to celebrate. 23 You have come to the meeting of God’s firstborn[ad] children. Their names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all people. And you have come to the spirits of good people who have been made perfect. 24 You have come to Jesus—the one who brought the new agreement from God to his people. You have come to the sprinkled blood[ae] that tells us about better things than the blood of Abel.

25 Be careful and don’t refuse to listen when God speaks. Those people refused to listen to him when he warned them on earth. And they did not escape. Now God is speaking from heaven. So now it will be worse for those who refuse to listen to him. 26 When he spoke before, his voice shook the earth. But now he has promised, “Once again I will shake the earth, but I will also shake heaven.”[af] 27 The words “once again” clearly show us that everything that was created will be destroyed—that is, the things that can be shaken. And only what cannot be shaken will remain.

28 So we should be thankful because we have a kingdom that cannot be shaken. And because we are thankful, we should worship God in a way that will please him. We should do this with respect and fear, 29 because our God is like a fire that can destroy us.

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.(A) For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[a](B) Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[b](C)

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[c](D) And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”(E)

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,(F) God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts.”[d](G)

For if Joshua had given them rest,(H) God would not have spoken(I) later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e](J) just as God did from his.(K) 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(L)

12 For the word of God(M) is alive(N) and active.(O) Sharper than any double-edged sword,(P) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(Q) 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.(R) Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Jesus the Great High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest(S) who has ascended into heaven,[f](T) Jesus the Son of God,(U) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(V) 15 For we do not have a high priest(W) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(X)—yet he did not sin.(Y) 16 Let us then approach(Z) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(AA) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God,(AB) to offer gifts and sacrifices(AC) for sins.(AD) He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray,(AE) since he himself is subject to weakness.(AF) This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.(AG) And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.(AH)

In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory(AI) of becoming a high priest.(AJ) But God said(AK) to him,

“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.”[g](AL)

And he says in another place,

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.(AM)[h](AN)

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions(AO) with fervent cries and tears(AP) to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard(AQ) because of his reverent submission.(AR) Son(AS) though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered(AT) and, once made perfect,(AU) he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest(AV) in the order of Melchizedek.(AW)

Warning Against Falling Away(AX)

11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths(AY) of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!(AZ) 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,(BA) is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature,(BB) who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.(BC)

Therefore let us move beyond(BD) the elementary teachings(BE) about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[i](BF) and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites,[j](BG) the laying on of hands,(BH) the resurrection of the dead,(BI) and eternal judgment. And God permitting,(BJ) we will do so.

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,(BK) who have tasted the heavenly gift,(BL) who have shared in the Holy Spirit,(BM) who have tasted the goodness(BN) of the word of God(BO) and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen[k] away, to be brought back to repentance.(BP) To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God(BQ) all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed.(BR) In the end it will be burned.

Even though we speak like this, dear friends,(BS) we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.(BT) 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope(BU) for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate(BV) those who through faith and patience(BW) inherit what has been promised.(BX)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,(BY) 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[l](BZ) 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.(CA)

16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.(CB) 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(CC) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(CD) he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,(CE) we who have fled to take hold of the hope(CF) set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,(CG) 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.(CH) He has become a high priest(CI) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.(CJ)

Melchizedek the Priest

This Melchizedek was king of Salem(CK) and priest of God Most High.(CL) He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,(CM) and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy,(CN) without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God,(CO) he remains a priest forever.

Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch(CP) Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!(CQ) Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people(CR)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed(CS) him who had the promises.(CT) And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.(CU) One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

Jesus Like Melchizedek

11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people(CV) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,(CW) one in the order of Melchizedek,(CX) not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe,(CY) and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.(CZ) 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah,(DA) and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared:

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”[m](DB)

18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless(DC) 19 (for the law made nothing perfect),(DD) and a better hope(DE) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.(DF)

20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:(DG)
    ‘You are a priest forever.’”[n](DH)

22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.(DI)

23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.(DJ) 25 Therefore he is able to save(DK) completely[o] those who come to God(DL) through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.(DM)

26 Such a high priest(DN) truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,(DO) exalted above the heavens.(DP) 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices(DQ) day after day, first for his own sins,(DR) and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all(DS) when he offered himself.(DT) 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;(DU) but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,(DV) who has been made perfect(DW) forever.

The High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest,(DX) who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,(DY) and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle(DZ) set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Every high priest(EA) is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices,(EB) and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.(EC) If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.(ED) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy(EE) and shadow(EF) of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned(EG) when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[p](EH) But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant(EI) of which he is mediator(EJ) is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.(EK) But God found fault with the people and said[q]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant(EL)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors(EM)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant(EN) I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.(EO)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(EP)
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,(EQ)
from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.(ER)[r](ES)

13 By calling this covenant “new,”(ET) he has made the first one obsolete;(EU) and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle

Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.(EV) A tabernacle(EW) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(EX) and the table(EY) with its consecrated bread;(EZ) this was called the Holy Place.(FA) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(FB) which had the golden altar of incense(FC) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(FD) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(FE) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(FF) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(FG) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(FH) overshadowing the atonement cover.(FI) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(FJ) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(FK) the inner room,(FL) and that only once a year,(FM) and never without blood,(FN) which he offered for himself(FO) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(FP) The Holy Spirit was showing(FQ) by this that the way(FR) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(FS) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(FT) were not able to clear the conscience(FU) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(FV) and drink(FW) and various ceremonial washings(FX)—external regulations(FY) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(FZ) of the good things that are now already here,[s](GA) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(GB) that is not made with human hands,(GC) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(GD) but he entered the Most Holy Place(GE) once for all(GF) by his own blood,(GG) thus obtaining[t] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls(GH) and the ashes of a heifer(GI) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit(GJ) offered himself(GK) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences(GL) from acts that lead to death,[u](GM) so that we may serve the living God!(GN)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator(GO) of a new covenant,(GP) that those who are called(GQ) may receive the promised(GR) eternal inheritance(GS)—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.(GT)

16 In the case of a will,[v] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.(GU) 19 When Moses had proclaimed(GV) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,(GW) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.(GX) 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”[w](GY) 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,(GZ) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.(HA)

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies(HB) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one;(HC) he entered heaven itself,(HD) now to appear for us in God’s presence.(HE) 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place(HF) every year with blood that is not his own.(HG) 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.(HH) But he has appeared(HI) once for all(HJ) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.(HK) 27 Just as people are destined to die once,(HL) and after that to face judgment,(HM) 28 so Christ was sacrificed once(HN) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,(HO) not to bear sin,(HP) but to bring salvation(HQ) to those who are waiting for him.(HR)

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 The law is only a shadow(HS) of the good things(HT) that are coming—not the realities themselves.(HU) For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect(HV) those who draw near to worship.(HW) Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.(HX) But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.(HY) It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats(HZ) to take away sins.(IA)

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(IB) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;(IC)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(ID)
I have come to do your will, my God.’”[x](IE)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(IF)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(IG) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(IH) through the sacrifice of the body(II) of Jesus Christ once for all.(IJ)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(IK) which can never take away sins.(IL) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(IM) he sat down at the right hand of God,(IN) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(IO) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(IP) forever those who are being made holy.(IQ)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(IR) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[y](IS)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[z](IT)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(IU) to enter the Most Holy Place(IV) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(IW) opened for us through the curtain,(IX) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(IY) over the house of God,(IZ) 22 let us draw near to God(JA) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(JB) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(JC) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(JD) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(JE) we profess,(JF) for he who promised is faithful.(JG) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(JH) 25 not giving up meeting together,(JI) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(JJ)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(JK)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(JL) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(JM) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(JN) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(JO) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(JP) underfoot,(JQ) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(JR) that sanctified them,(JS) and who has insulted the Spirit(JT) of grace?(JU) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[aa](JV) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[ab](JW) 31 It is a dreadful thing(JX) to fall into the hands(JY) of the living God.(JZ)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(KA) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(KB) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(KC) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(KD) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(KE) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(KF) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(KG) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(KH) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(KI) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming(KJ) will come
    and will not delay.”[ac](KK)

38 And,

“But my righteous[ad] one will live by faith.(KL)
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”[ae](KM)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(KN) and assurance about what we do not see.(KO) This is what the ancients were commended for.(KP)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(KQ) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(KR) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(KS) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(KT)

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[af](KU) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(KV) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(KW) in holy fear built an ark(KX) to save his family.(KY) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(KZ)

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,(LA) obeyed and went,(LB) even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land(LC) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,(LD) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.(LE) 10 For he was looking forward to the city(LF) with foundations,(LG) whose architect and builder is God.(LH) 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,(LI) was enabled to bear children(LJ) because she[ag] considered him faithful(LK) who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,(LL) came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.(LM)

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(LN) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(LO) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(LP) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(LQ) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(LR) Therefore God is not ashamed(LS) to be called their God,(LT) for he has prepared a city(LU) for them.

17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.(LV) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[ah](LW) 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,(LX) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.(LY)

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons,(LZ) and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.(MA)

23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born,(MB) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.(MC)

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.(MD) 25 He chose to be mistreated(ME) along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace(MF) for the sake of Christ(MG) as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.(MH) 27 By faith he left Egypt,(MI) not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer(MJ) of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.(MK)

29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.(ML)

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.(MM)

31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.[ai](MN)

32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,(MO) Barak,(MP) Samson(MQ) and Jephthah,(MR) about David(MS) and Samuel(MT) and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,(MU) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,(MV) 34 quenched the fury of the flames,(MW) and escaped the edge of the sword;(MX) whose weakness was turned to strength;(MY) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.(MZ) 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.(NA) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging,(NB) and even chains and imprisonment.(NC) 37 They were put to death by stoning;[aj](ND) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.(NE) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,(NF) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(NG) and in holes in the ground.

39 These were all commended(NH) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(NI) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(NJ) would they be made perfect.(NK)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run(NL) with perseverance(NM) the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus,(NN) the pioneer(NO) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,(NP) scorning its shame,(NQ) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.(NR) Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary(NS) and lose heart.

God Disciplines His Children

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(NT) And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(NU) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(NV)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[ak](NW)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(NX) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(NY)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits(NZ) and live!(OA) 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.(OB) 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace(OC) for those who have been trained by it.

12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.(OD) 13 “Make level paths for your feet,”[al](OE) so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.(OF)

Warning and Encouragement

14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone(OG) and to be holy;(OH) without holiness no one will see the Lord.(OI) 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God(OJ) and that no bitter root(OK) grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral,(OL) or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.(OM) 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears,(ON) he could not change what he had done.

The Mountain of Fear and the Mountain of Joy

18 You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm;(OO) 19 to a trumpet blast(OP) or to such a voice speaking words(OQ) that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,(OR) 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.”[am](OS) 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”[an](OT)

22 But you have come to Mount Zion,(OU) to the city(OV) of the living God,(OW) the heavenly Jerusalem.(OX) You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn,(OY) whose names are written in heaven.(OZ) You have come to God, the Judge of all,(PA) to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,(PB) 24 to Jesus the mediator(PC) of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood(PD) that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.(PE)

25 See to it that you do not refuse(PF) him who speaks.(PG) If they did not escape when they refused him who warned(PH) them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?(PI) 26 At that time his voice shook the earth,(PJ) but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”[ao](PK) 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken(PL)—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,(PM) let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,(PN) 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”[ap](PO)
