“Plead with your mother, plead—
for (A)she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband—
that she put away (B)her whoring from her face,
    and her adultery from between her breasts;
lest (C)I strip her naked
and make her as (D)in the day she was born,
and (E)make her like a wilderness,
and make her like a parched land,
    and kill her with thirst.
(F)Upon her children also I will have no mercy,
(G)because they are children of whoredom.
For (H)their mother has played the whore;
she who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For (I)she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
who (J)give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’
Therefore (K)I will hedge up her[a] way with thorns,
and (L)I will build a wall against her,
so that she cannot find her paths.
She shall pursue her lovers
    but not overtake them,
and she shall seek them
    but shall not find them.
(M)Then she shall say,
‘I will go and return to (N)my first husband,
(O)for it was better for me then than now.’
And (P)she did not know
that it was (Q)I who gave her
(R)the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and who lavished on (S)her silver and gold,
    (T)which they used for Baal.
Therefore (U)I will take back
    my grain in its time,
and my wine in its season,
and (V)I will take away my wool and my flax,
which were to cover her nakedness.
10 Now (W)I will uncover her lewdness
in the sight of her lovers,
and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.
11 (X)And I will put an end to all her mirth,
her feasts, her (Y)new moons, her (Z)Sabbaths,
    and all her (AA)appointed feasts.
12 And (AB)I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,
    (AC)of which she said,
‘These are (AD)my wages,
which my lovers have given me.’
I will make them a forest,
(AE)and the beasts of the field shall devour them.

Israel Punished and Restored

“Rebuke your mother,(A) rebuke her,
for she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband.
Let her remove the adulterous(B) look from her face
and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
Otherwise I will strip(C) her naked
and make her as bare as on the day she was born;(D)
I will make her like a desert,(E)
turn her into a parched land,
    and slay her with thirst.
I will not show my love to her children,(F)
because they are the children of adultery.(G)
Their mother has been unfaithful
and has conceived them in disgrace.
She said, ‘I will go after my lovers,(H)
who give me my food and my water,
my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’(I)
Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes;
I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way.(J)
She will chase after her lovers but not catch them;
she will look for them but not find them.(K)
Then she will say,
‘I will go back to my husband(L) as at first,(M)
for then I was better off(N) than now.’
She has not acknowledged(O) that I was the one
who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil,(P)
who lavished on her the silver and gold(Q)
    which they used for Baal.(R)

“Therefore I will take away my grain(S) when it ripens,
and my new wine(T) when it is ready.
I will take back my wool and my linen,
intended to cover her naked body.
10 So now I will expose(U) her lewdness
before the eyes of her lovers;(V)
no one will take her out of my hands.(W)
11 I will stop(X) all her celebrations:(Y)
her yearly festivals, her New Moons,
her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals.(Z)

which she said were her pay from her lovers;(AC)
