The Helper of Israel

41 “Be silent(A) before me, you islands!(B)
    Let the nations renew their strength!(C)
Let them come forward(D) and speak;
    let us meet together(E) at the place of judgment.

“Who has stirred(F) up one from the east,(G)
    calling him in righteousness(H) to his service[a]?(I)
He hands nations over to him
    and subdues kings before him.
He turns them to dust(J) with his sword,
    to windblown chaff(K) with his bow.(L)
He pursues them and moves on unscathed,(M)
    by a path his feet have not traveled before.
Who has done this and carried it through,
    calling(N) forth the generations from the beginning?(O)
I, the Lord—with the first of them
    and with the last(P)—I am he.(Q)

The islands(R) have seen it and fear;
    the ends of the earth(S) tremble.
They approach and come forward;
    they help each other
    and say to their companions, “Be strong!(T)
The metalworker(U) encourages the goldsmith,(V)
    and the one who smooths with the hammer
    spurs on the one who strikes the anvil.
One says of the welding, “It is good.”
    The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.(W)

“But you, Israel, my servant,(X)
    Jacob, whom I have chosen,(Y)
    you descendants of Abraham(Z) my friend,(AA)
I took you from the ends of the earth,(AB)
    from its farthest corners I called(AC) you.
I said, ‘You are my servant’;(AD)
    I have chosen(AE) you and have not rejected you.
10 So do not fear,(AF) for I am with you;(AG)
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen(AH) you and help(AI) you;
    I will uphold you(AJ) with my righteous right hand.(AK)

11 “All who rage(AL) against you
    will surely be ashamed and disgraced;(AM)
those who oppose(AN) you
    will be as nothing and perish.(AO)
12 Though you search for your enemies,
    you will not find them.(AP)
Those who wage war against you
    will be as nothing(AQ) at all.
13 For I am the Lord your God
    who takes hold of your right hand(AR)
and says to you, Do not fear;
    I will help(AS) you.
14 Do not be afraid,(AT) you worm(AU) Jacob,
    little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help(AV) you,” declares the Lord,
    your Redeemer,(AW) the Holy One(AX) of Israel.
15 “See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,(AY)
    new and sharp, with many teeth.
You will thresh the mountains(AZ) and crush them,
    and reduce the hills to chaff.(BA)
16 You will winnow(BB) them, the wind will pick them up,
    and a gale(BC) will blow them away.(BD)
But you will rejoice(BE) in the Lord
    and glory(BF) in the Holy One(BG) of Israel.

17 “The poor and needy search for water,(BH)
    but there is none;
    their tongues are parched with thirst.(BI)
But I the Lord will answer(BJ) them;
    I, the God of Israel, will not forsake(BK) them.
18 I will make rivers flow(BL) on barren heights,
    and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert(BM) into pools of water,(BN)
    and the parched ground into springs.(BO)
19 I will put in the desert(BP)
    the cedar and the acacia,(BQ) the myrtle and the olive.
I will set junipers(BR) in the wasteland,
    the fir and the cypress(BS) together,(BT)
20 so that people may see and know,(BU)
    may consider and understand,(BV)
that the hand(BW) of the Lord has done this,
    that the Holy One(BX) of Israel has created(BY) it.

21 “Present your case,(BZ)” says the Lord.
    “Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.(CA)
22 “Tell us, you idols,
    what is going to happen.(CB)
Tell us what the former things(CC) were,
    so that we may consider them
    and know their final outcome.
Or declare to us the things to come,(CD)
23     tell us what the future holds,
    so we may know(CE) that you are gods.
Do something, whether good or bad,(CF)
    so that we will be dismayed(CG) and filled with fear.
24 But you are less than nothing(CH)
    and your works are utterly worthless;(CI)
    whoever chooses you is detestable.(CJ)

25 “I have stirred(CK) up one from the north,(CL) and he comes—
    one from the rising sun who calls on my name.
He treads(CM) on rulers as if they were mortar,
    as if he were a potter treading the clay.
26 Who told of this from the beginning,(CN) so we could know,
    or beforehand, so we could say, ‘He was right’?
No one told of this,
    no one foretold(CO) it,
    no one heard any words(CP) from you.
27 I was the first to tell(CQ) Zion, ‘Look, here they are!’
    I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good news.(CR)
28 I look but there is no one(CS)
    no one among the gods to give counsel,(CT)
    no one to give answer(CU) when I ask them.
29 See, they are all false!
    Their deeds amount to nothing;(CV)
    their images(CW) are but wind(CX) and confusion.

The Servant of the Lord

42 “Here is my servant,(CY) whom I uphold,
    my chosen one(CZ) in whom I delight;(DA)
I will put my Spirit(DB) on him,
    and he will bring justice(DC) to the nations.(DD)
He will not shout or cry out,(DE)
    or raise his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed(DF) he will not break,(DG)
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.(DH)
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;(DI)
    he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice(DJ) on earth.
    In his teaching(DK) the islands(DL) will put their hope.”(DM)

This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens,(DN) who stretches them out,
    who spreads out the earth(DO) with all that springs from it,(DP)
    who gives breath(DQ) to its people,
    and life to those who walk on it:
“I, the Lord, have called(DR) you in righteousness;(DS)
    I will take hold of your hand.(DT)
I will keep(DU) you and will make you
    to be a covenant(DV) for the people
    and a light(DW) for the Gentiles,(DX)
to open eyes that are blind,(DY)
    to free(DZ) captives from prison(EA)
    and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.(EB)

“I am the Lord;(EC) that is my name!(ED)
    I will not yield my glory to another(EE)
    or my praise to idols.(EF)
See, the former things(EG) have taken place,
    and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
    I announce(EH) them to you.”

Song of Praise to the Lord

10 Sing(EI) to the Lord a new song,(EJ)
    his praise(EK) from the ends of the earth,(EL)
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,(EM)
    you islands,(EN) and all who live in them.
11 Let the wilderness(EO) and its towns raise their voices;
    let the settlements where Kedar(EP) lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela(EQ) sing for joy;
    let them shout from the mountaintops.(ER)
12 Let them give glory(ES) to the Lord
    and proclaim his praise(ET) in the islands.(EU)
13 The Lord will march out like a champion,(EV)
    like a warrior(EW) he will stir up his zeal;(EX)
with a shout(EY) he will raise the battle cry
    and will triumph over his enemies.(EZ)

14 “For a long time I have kept silent,(FA)
    I have been quiet and held myself back.(FB)
But now, like a woman in childbirth,
    I cry out, I gasp and pant.(FC)
15 I will lay waste(FD) the mountains(FE) and hills
    and dry up all their vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands
    and dry up(FF) the pools.
16 I will lead(FG) the blind(FH) by ways they have not known,
    along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light(FI) before them
    and make the rough places smooth.(FJ)
These are the things I will do;
    I will not forsake(FK) them.
17 But those who trust in idols,
    who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’(FL)
    will be turned back in utter shame.(FM)

Israel Blind and Deaf

18 “Hear, you deaf;(FN)
    look, you blind, and see!
19 Who is blind(FO) but my servant,(FP)
    and deaf like the messenger(FQ) I send?
Who is blind like the one in covenant(FR) with me,
    blind like the servant of the Lord?
20 You have seen many things, but you pay no attention;
    your ears are open, but you do not listen.”(FS)
21 It pleased the Lord
    for the sake(FT) of his righteousness
    to make his law(FU) great and glorious.
22 But this is a people plundered(FV) and looted,
    all of them trapped in pits(FW)
    or hidden away in prisons.(FX)
They have become plunder,
    with no one to rescue them;(FY)
they have been made loot,
    with no one to say, “Send them back.”

23 Which of you will listen to this
    or pay close attention(FZ) in time to come?
24 Who handed Jacob over to become loot,
    and Israel to the plunderers?(GA)
Was it not the Lord,(GB)
    against whom we have sinned?
For they would not follow(GC) his ways;
    they did not obey his law.(GD)
25 So he poured out on them his burning anger,(GE)
    the violence of war.
It enveloped them in flames,(GF) yet they did not understand;(GG)
    it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.(GH)

Israel’s Only Savior

43 But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created(GI) you, Jacob,
    he who formed(GJ) you, Israel:(GK)
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed(GL) you;
    I have summoned you by name;(GM) you are mine.(GN)
When you pass through the waters,(GO)
    I will be with you;(GP)
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,(GQ)
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.(GR)
For I am the Lord your God,(GS)
    the Holy One(GT) of Israel, your Savior;(GU)
I give Egypt(GV) for your ransom,
    Cush[b](GW) and Seba(GX) in your stead.(GY)
Since you are precious and honored(GZ) in my sight,
    and because I love(HA) you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
    nations in exchange for your life.
Do not be afraid,(HB) for I am with you;(HC)
    I will bring your children(HD) from the east
    and gather(HE) you from the west.(HF)
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
    and to the south,(HG) ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring my sons from afar
    and my daughters(HH) from the ends of the earth(HI)
everyone who is called by my name,(HJ)
    whom I created(HK) for my glory,(HL)
    whom I formed and made.(HM)

Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,(HN)
    who have ears but are deaf.(HO)
All the nations gather together(HP)
    and the peoples assemble.
Which of their gods foretold(HQ) this
    and proclaimed to us the former things?
Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right,
    so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
10 “You are my witnesses,(HR)” declares the Lord,
    “and my servant(HS) whom I have chosen,
so that you may know(HT) and believe me
    and understand that I am he.
Before me no god(HU) was formed,
    nor will there be one after me.(HV)
11 I, even I, am the Lord,(HW)
    and apart from me there is no savior.(HX)
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
    I, and not some foreign god(HY) among you.
You are my witnesses,(HZ)” declares the Lord, “that I am God.
13     Yes, and from ancient days(IA) I am he.(IB)
No one can deliver out of my hand.
    When I act, who can reverse it?”(IC)

God’s Mercy and Israel’s Unfaithfulness

14 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(ID) the Holy One(IE) of Israel:
“For your sake I will send to Babylon
    and bring down as fugitives(IF) all the Babylonians,[c](IG)
    in the ships in which they took pride.
15 I am the Lord,(IH) your Holy One,
    Israel’s Creator,(II) your King.(IJ)

16 This is what the Lord says—
    he who made a way through the sea,
    a path through the mighty waters,(IK)
17 who drew out(IL) the chariots and horses,(IM)
    the army and reinforcements together,(IN)
and they lay(IO) there, never to rise again,
    extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:(IP)
18 “Forget the former things;(IQ)
    do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!(IR)
    Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness(IS)
    and streams in the wasteland.(IT)
20 The wild animals(IU) honor me,
    the jackals(IV) and the owls,
because I provide water(IW) in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,
21     the people I formed(IX) for myself(IY)
    that they may proclaim my praise.(IZ)

22 “Yet you have not called on me, Jacob,
    you have not wearied(JA) yourselves for[d] me, Israel.(JB)
23 You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings,(JC)
    nor honored(JD) me with your sacrifices.(JE)
I have not burdened(JF) you with grain offerings
    nor wearied you with demands(JG) for incense.(JH)
24 You have not bought any fragrant calamus(JI) for me,
    or lavished on me the fat(JJ) of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins
    and wearied(JK) me with your offenses.(JL)

25 “I, even I, am he who blots out
    your transgressions,(JM) for my own sake,(JN)
    and remembers your sins(JO) no more.(JP)
26 Review the past for me,
    let us argue the matter together;(JQ)
    state the case(JR) for your innocence.
27 Your first father(JS) sinned;
    those I sent to teach(JT) you rebelled(JU) against me.
28 So I disgraced the dignitaries of your temple;
    I consigned Jacob to destruction[e](JV)
    and Israel to scorn.(JW)

Israel the Chosen

44 “But now listen, Jacob, my servant,(JX)
    Israel, whom I have chosen.(JY)
This is what the Lord says—
    he who made(JZ) you, who formed you in the womb,(KA)
    and who will help(KB) you:
Do not be afraid,(KC) Jacob, my servant,(KD)
    Jeshurun,[f](KE) whom I have chosen.
For I will pour water(KF) on the thirsty land,
    and streams on the dry ground;(KG)
I will pour out my Spirit(KH) on your offspring,
    and my blessing(KI) on your descendants.(KJ)
They will spring up like grass(KK) in a meadow,
    like poplar trees(KL) by flowing streams.(KM)
Some will say, ‘I belong(KN) to the Lord’;
    others will call themselves by the name of Jacob;
still others will write on their hand,(KO) ‘The Lord’s,’(KP)
    and will take the name Israel.

The Lord, Not Idols

“This is what the Lord says—
    Israel’s King(KQ) and Redeemer,(KR) the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last;(KS)
    apart from me there is no God.(KT)
Who then is like me?(KU) Let him proclaim it.
    Let him declare and lay out before me
what has happened since I established my ancient people,
    and what is yet to come—
    yes, let them foretell(KV) what will come.
Do not tremble, do not be afraid.
    Did I not proclaim(KW) this and foretell it long ago?
You are my witnesses. Is there any God(KX) besides me?
    No, there is no other Rock;(KY) I know not one.”

All who make idols(KZ) are nothing,
    and the things they treasure are worthless.(LA)
Those who would speak up for them are blind;(LB)
    they are ignorant, to their own shame.(LC)
10 Who shapes a god and casts an idol,(LD)
    which can profit nothing?(LE)
11 People who do that will be put to shame;(LF)
    such craftsmen are only human beings.
Let them all come together and take their stand;
    they will be brought down to terror and shame.(LG)

12 The blacksmith(LH) takes a tool
    and works with it in the coals;
he shapes an idol with hammers,
    he forges it with the might of his arm.(LI)
He gets hungry and loses his strength;
    he drinks no water and grows faint.(LJ)
13 The carpenter(LK) measures with a line
    and makes an outline with a marker;
he roughs it out with chisels
    and marks it with compasses.
He shapes it in human form,(LL)
    human form in all its glory,
    that it may dwell in a shrine.(LM)
14 He cut down cedars,
    or perhaps took a cypress or oak.
He let it grow among the trees of the forest,
    or planted a pine,(LN) and the rain made it grow.
15 It is used as fuel(LO) for burning;
    some of it he takes and warms himself,
    he kindles a fire and bakes bread.
But he also fashions a god and worships(LP) it;
    he makes an idol and bows(LQ) down to it.
16 Half of the wood he burns in the fire;
    over it he prepares his meal,
    he roasts his meat and eats his fill.
He also warms himself and says,
    “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.(LR)
17 From the rest he makes a god, his idol;
    he bows down to it and worships.(LS)
He prays(LT) to it and says,
    “Save(LU) me! You are my god!”
18 They know nothing, they understand(LV) nothing;
    their eyes(LW) are plastered over so they cannot see,
    and their minds closed so they cannot understand.
19 No one stops to think,
    no one has the knowledge or understanding(LX) to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel;(LY)
    I even baked bread over its coals,
    I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable(LZ) thing from what is left?
    Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”(MA)
20 Such a person feeds on ashes;(MB) a deluded(MC) heart misleads him;
    he cannot save himself, or say,
    “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?(MD)

21 “Remember(ME) these things, Jacob,
    for you, Israel, are my servant.(MF)
I have made you, you are my servant;(MG)
    Israel, I will not forget you.(MH)
22 I have swept away(MI) your offenses like a cloud,
    your sins like the morning mist.
Return(MJ) to me,
    for I have redeemed(MK) you.”

23 Sing for joy,(ML) you heavens, for the Lord has done this;
    shout aloud, you earth(MM) beneath.
Burst into song, you mountains,(MN)
    you forests and all your trees,(MO)
for the Lord has redeemed(MP) Jacob,
    he displays his glory(MQ) in Israel.

Jerusalem to Be Inhabited

24 “This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(MR) who formed(MS) you in the womb:(MT)

I am the Lord,
    the Maker of all things,
    who stretches out the heavens,(MU)
    who spreads out the earth(MV) by myself,
25 who foils(MW) the signs of false prophets
    and makes fools of diviners,(MX)
who overthrows the learning of the wise(MY)
    and turns it into nonsense,(MZ)
26 who carries out the words(NA) of his servants
    and fulfills(NB) the predictions of his messengers,

who says of Jerusalem,(NC) ‘It shall be inhabited,’
    of the towns of Judah, ‘They shall be rebuilt,’
    and of their ruins,(ND) ‘I will restore them,’(NE)
27 who says to the watery deep, ‘Be dry,
    and I will dry up(NF) your streams,’
28 who says of Cyrus,(NG) ‘He is my shepherd
    and will accomplish all that I please;
he will say of Jerusalem,(NH) “Let it be rebuilt,”
    and of the temple,(NI) “Let its foundations(NJ) be laid.”’

45 “This is what the Lord says to his anointed,(NK)
    to Cyrus,(NL) whose right hand I take hold(NM) of
to subdue nations(NN) before him
    and to strip kings of their armor,
to open doors before him
    so that gates will not be shut:
I will go before you(NO)
    and will level(NP) the mountains[g];
I will break down gates(NQ) of bronze
    and cut through bars of iron.(NR)
I will give you hidden treasures,(NS)
    riches stored in secret places,(NT)
so that you may know(NU) that I am the Lord,
    the God of Israel, who summons you by name.(NV)
For the sake of Jacob my servant,(NW)
    of Israel my chosen,
I summon you by name
    and bestow on you a title of honor,
    though you do not acknowledge(NX) me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other;(NY)
    apart from me there is no God.(NZ)
I will strengthen you,(OA)
    though you have not acknowledged me,
so that from the rising of the sun
    to the place of its setting(OB)
people may know(OC) there is none besides me.(OD)
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form the light and create darkness,(OE)
    I bring prosperity and create disaster;(OF)
    I, the Lord, do all these things.

“You heavens above, rain(OG) down my righteousness;(OH)
    let the clouds shower it down.
Let the earth open wide,
    let salvation(OI) spring up,
let righteousness flourish with it;
    I, the Lord, have created it.

“Woe to those who quarrel(OJ) with their Maker,(OK)
    those who are nothing but potsherds(OL)
    among the potsherds on the ground.
Does the clay say to the potter,(OM)
    ‘What are you making?’(ON)
Does your work say,
    ‘The potter has no hands’?(OO)
10 Woe to the one who says to a father,
    ‘What have you begotten?’
or to a mother,
    ‘What have you brought to birth?’

11 “This is what the Lord says—
    the Holy One(OP) of Israel, and its Maker:(OQ)
Concerning things to come,
    do you question me about my children,
    or give me orders about the work of my hands?(OR)
12 It is I who made the earth(OS)
    and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens;(OT)
    I marshaled their starry hosts.(OU)
13 I will raise up Cyrus[h](OV) in my righteousness:
    I will make all his ways straight.(OW)
He will rebuild my city(OX)
    and set my exiles free,
but not for a price or reward,(OY)
    says the Lord Almighty.”

14 This is what the Lord says:

“The products(OZ) of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush,[i]
    and those tall Sabeans(PA)
they will come over to you(PB)
    and will be yours;
they will trudge behind you,(PC)
    coming over to you in chains.(PD)
They will bow down before you
    and plead(PE) with you, saying,
‘Surely God is with you,(PF) and there is no other;
    there is no other god.(PG)’”

15 Truly you are a God who has been hiding(PH) himself,
    the God and Savior(PI) of Israel.
16 All the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced;(PJ)
    they will go off into disgrace together.
17 But Israel will be saved(PK) by the Lord
    with an everlasting salvation;(PL)
you will never be put to shame or disgraced,(PM)
    to ages everlasting.

18 For this is what the Lord says—
he who created the heavens,
    he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth,(PN)
    he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty,(PO)
    but formed it to be inhabited(PP)
he says:
“I am the Lord,
    and there is no other.(PQ)
19 I have not spoken in secret,(PR)
    from somewhere in a land of darkness;(PS)
I have not said to Jacob’s descendants,(PT)
    ‘Seek(PU) me in vain.’
I, the Lord, speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.(PV)

20 “Gather together(PW) and come;
    assemble, you fugitives from the nations.
Ignorant(PX) are those who carry(PY) about idols of wood,
    who pray to gods that cannot save.(PZ)
21 Declare what is to be, present it—
    let them take counsel together.
Who foretold(QA) this long ago,
    who declared it from the distant past?(QB)
Was it not I, the Lord?
    And there is no God apart from me,(QC)
a righteous God(QD) and a Savior;(QE)
    there is none but me.

22 “Turn(QF) to me and be saved,(QG)
    all you ends of the earth;(QH)
    for I am God, and there is no other.(QI)
23 By myself I have sworn,(QJ)
    my mouth has uttered in all integrity(QK)
    a word that will not be revoked:(QL)
Before me every knee will bow;(QM)
    by me every tongue will swear.(QN)
24 They will say of me, ‘In the Lord alone
    are deliverance(QO) and strength.(QP)’”
All who have raged against him
    will come to him and be put to shame.(QQ)
25 But all the descendants(QR) of Israel
    will find deliverance(QS) in the Lord
    and will make their boast in him.(QT)

Gods of Babylon

46 Bel(QU) bows down, Nebo stoops low;
    their idols(QV) are borne by beasts of burden.[j]
The images that are carried(QW) about are burdensome,
    a burden for the weary.
They stoop and bow down together;
    unable to rescue the burden,
    they themselves go off into captivity.(QX)

“Listen(QY) to me, you descendants of Jacob,
    all the remnant(QZ) of the people of Israel,
you whom I have upheld since your birth,(RA)
    and have carried(RB) since you were born.(RC)
Even to your old age and gray hairs(RD)
    I am he,(RE) I am he who will sustain you.
I have made you and I will carry you;
    I will sustain(RF) you and I will rescue you.

“With whom will you compare me or count me equal?
    To whom will you liken me that we may be compared?(RG)
Some pour out gold from their bags
    and weigh out silver on the scales;
they hire a goldsmith(RH) to make it into a god,
    and they bow down and worship it.(RI)
They lift it to their shoulders and carry(RJ) it;
    they set it up in its place, and there it stands.
    From that spot it cannot move.(RK)
Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer;(RL)
    it cannot save(RM) them from their troubles.

“Remember(RN) this, keep it in mind,
    take it to heart, you rebels.(RO)
Remember the former things,(RP) those of long ago;(RQ)
    I am God, and there is no other;
    I am God, and there is none like me.(RR)
10 I make known the end from the beginning,(RS)
    from ancient times,(RT) what is still to come.(RU)
I say, ‘My purpose will stand,(RV)
    and I will do all that I please.’
11 From the east I summon(RW) a bird of prey;(RX)
    from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose.
What I have said, that I will bring about;
    what I have planned,(RY) that I will do.(RZ)
12 Listen(SA) to me, you stubborn-hearted,(SB)
    you who are now far from my righteousness.(SC)
13 I am bringing my righteousness(SD) near,
    it is not far away;
    and my salvation(SE) will not be delayed.
I will grant salvation to Zion,(SF)
    my splendor(SG) to Israel.

The Fall of Babylon

47 “Go down, sit in the dust,(SH)
    Virgin Daughter(SI) Babylon;
sit on the ground without a throne,
    queen city of the Babylonians.[k](SJ)
No more will you be called
    tender or delicate.(SK)
Take millstones(SL) and grind(SM) flour;
    take off your veil.(SN)
Lift up your skirts,(SO) bare your legs,
    and wade through the streams.
Your nakedness(SP) will be exposed
    and your shame(SQ) uncovered.
I will take vengeance;(SR)
    I will spare no one.(SS)

Our Redeemer(ST)—the Lord Almighty(SU) is his name(SV)
    is the Holy One(SW) of Israel.

“Sit in silence,(SX) go into darkness,(SY)
    queen city of the Babylonians;(SZ)
no more will you be called
    queen(TA) of kingdoms.(TB)
I was angry(TC) with my people
    and desecrated my inheritance;(TD)
I gave them into your hand,(TE)
    and you showed them no mercy.(TF)
Even on the aged
    you laid a very heavy yoke.
You said, ‘I am forever(TG)
    the eternal queen!’(TH)
But you did not consider these things
    or reflect(TI) on what might happen.(TJ)

“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,
    lounging in your security(TK)
and saying to yourself,
    ‘I am, and there is none besides me.(TL)
I will never be a widow(TM)
    or suffer the loss of children.’
Both of these will overtake you
    in a moment,(TN) on a single day:
    loss of children(TO) and widowhood.(TP)
They will come upon you in full measure,
    in spite of your many sorceries(TQ)
    and all your potent spells.(TR)
10 You have trusted(TS) in your wickedness
    and have said, ‘No one sees me.’(TT)
Your wisdom(TU) and knowledge mislead(TV) you
    when you say to yourself,
    ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
11 Disaster(TW) will come upon you,
    and you will not know how to conjure it away.
A calamity will fall upon you
    that you cannot ward off with a ransom;
a catastrophe you cannot foresee
    will suddenly(TX) come upon you.

12 “Keep on, then, with your magic spells
    and with your many sorceries,(TY)
    which you have labored at since childhood.
Perhaps you will succeed,
    perhaps you will cause terror.
13 All the counsel you have received has only worn you out!(TZ)
    Let your astrologers(UA) come forward,
those stargazers who make predictions month by month,
    let them save(UB) you from what is coming upon you.
14 Surely they are like stubble;(UC)
    the fire(UD) will burn them up.
They cannot even save themselves
    from the power of the flame.(UE)
These are not coals for warmth;
    this is not a fire to sit by.
15 That is all they are to you—
    these you have dealt with
    and labored(UF) with since childhood.
All of them go on in their error;
    there is not one that can save(UG) you.

Stubborn Israel

48 “Listen to this, you descendants of Jacob,
    you who are called by the name of Israel(UH)
    and come from the line of Judah,(UI)
you who take oaths(UJ) in the name of the Lord(UK)
    and invoke(UL) the God of Israel—
    but not in truth(UM) or righteousness—
you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city(UN)
    and claim to rely(UO) on the God of Israel—
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(UP)
I foretold the former things(UQ) long ago,
    my mouth announced(UR) them and I made them known;
    then suddenly(US) I acted, and they came to pass.
For I knew how stubborn(UT) you were;
    your neck muscles(UU) were iron,
    your forehead(UV) was bronze.
Therefore I told you these things long ago;
    before they happened I announced(UW) them to you
so that you could not say,
    ‘My images brought them about;(UX)
    my wooden image and metal god ordained them.’
You have heard these things; look at them all.
    Will you not admit them?

“From now on I will tell you of new things,(UY)
    of hidden things unknown to you.
They are created(UZ) now, and not long ago;(VA)
    you have not heard of them before today.
So you cannot say,
    ‘Yes, I knew(VB) of them.’
You have neither heard nor understood;(VC)
    from of old your ears(VD) have not been open.
Well do I know how treacherous(VE) you are;
    you were called a rebel(VF) from birth.
For my own name’s sake(VG) I delay my wrath;(VH)
    for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,
    so as not to destroy you completely.(VI)
10 See, I have refined(VJ) you, though not as silver;
    I have tested(VK) you in the furnace(VL) of affliction.
11 For my own sake,(VM) for my own sake, I do this.
    How can I let myself be defamed?(VN)
    I will not yield my glory to another.(VO)

Israel Freed

12 “Listen(VP) to me, Jacob,
    Israel, whom I have called:(VQ)
I am he;(VR)
    I am the first and I am the last.(VS)
13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth,(VT)
    and my right hand spread out the heavens;(VU)
when I summon them,
    they all stand up together.(VV)

14 “Come together,(VW) all of you, and listen:
    Which of the idols has foretold(VX) these things?
The Lord’s chosen ally(VY)
    will carry out his purpose(VZ) against Babylon;(WA)
    his arm will be against the Babylonians.[l]
15 I, even I, have spoken;
    yes, I have called(WB) him.
I will bring him,
    and he will succeed(WC) in his mission.

16 “Come near(WD) me and listen(WE) to this:

“From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret;(WF)
    at the time it happens, I am there.”

And now the Sovereign Lord(WG) has sent(WH) me,
    endowed with his Spirit.(WI)

17 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(WJ) the Holy One(WK) of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches(WL) you what is best for you,
    who directs(WM) you in the way(WN) you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention(WO) to my commands,
    your peace(WP) would have been like a river,(WQ)
    your well-being(WR) like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants(WS) would have been like the sand,(WT)
    your children like its numberless grains;(WU)
their name would never be blotted out(WV)
    nor destroyed from before me.”

20 Leave Babylon,
    flee(WW) from the Babylonians!
Announce this with shouts of joy(WX)
    and proclaim it.
Send it out to the ends of the earth;(WY)
    say, “The Lord has redeemed(WZ) his servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst(XA) when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow(XB) for them from the rock;
he split the rock
    and water gushed out.(XC)

22 “There is no peace,”(XD) says the Lord, “for the wicked.”(XE)

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen(XF) to me, you islands;(XG)
    hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born(XH) the Lord called(XI) me;
    from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.(XJ)
He made my mouth(XK) like a sharpened sword,(XL)
    in the shadow of his hand(XM) he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow(XN)
    and concealed me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You are my servant,(XO)
    Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.(XP)
But I said, “I have labored in vain;(XQ)
    I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,(XR)
    and my reward(XS) is with my God.”(XT)

And now the Lord says—
    he who formed me in the womb(XU) to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
    and gather Israel(XV) to himself,
for I am[m] honored(XW) in the eyes of the Lord
    and my God has been my strength(XX)
he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant(XY)
    to restore the tribes of Jacob
    and bring back those of Israel I have kept.(XZ)
I will also make you a light(YA) for the Gentiles,(YB)
    that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”(YC)

This is what the Lord says—
    the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel(YD)
to him who was despised(YE) and abhorred by the nation,
    to the servant of rulers:
“Kings(YF) will see you and stand up,
    princes will see and bow down,(YG)
because of the Lord, who is faithful,(YH)
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen(YI) you.”

Restoration of Israel

This is what the Lord says:

“In the time of my favor(YJ) I will answer you,
    and in the day of salvation I will help you;(YK)
I will keep(YL) you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people,(YM)
to restore the land(YN)
    and to reassign its desolate inheritances,(YO)
to say to the captives,(YP) ‘Come out,’
    and to those in darkness,(YQ) ‘Be free!’

“They will feed beside the roads
    and find pasture on every barren hill.(YR)
10 They will neither hunger nor thirst,(YS)
    nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them.(YT)
He who has compassion(YU) on them will guide(YV) them
    and lead them beside springs(YW) of water.
11 I will turn all my mountains into roads,
    and my highways(YX) will be raised up.(YY)
12 See, they will come from afar(YZ)
    some from the north, some from the west,(ZA)
    some from the region of Aswan.[n]

13 Shout for joy,(ZB) you heavens;
    rejoice, you earth;(ZC)
    burst into song, you mountains!(ZD)
For the Lord comforts(ZE) his people
    and will have compassion(ZF) on his afflicted ones.(ZG)

14 But Zion(ZH) said, “The Lord has forsaken(ZI) me,
    the Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child(ZJ) she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!(ZK)
16 See, I have engraved(ZL) you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls(ZM) are ever before me.
17 Your children hasten back,
    and those who laid you waste(ZN) depart from you.
18 Lift up your eyes and look around;
    all your children gather(ZO) and come to you.
As surely as I live,(ZP)” declares the Lord,
    “you will wear(ZQ) them all as ornaments;
    you will put them on, like a bride.

19 “Though you were ruined and made desolate(ZR)
    and your land laid waste,(ZS)
now you will be too small for your people,(ZT)
    and those who devoured(ZU) you will be far away.
20 The children born during your bereavement
    will yet say in your hearing,
‘This place is too small for us;
    give us more space to live in.’(ZV)
21 Then you will say in your heart,
    ‘Who bore me these?(ZW)
I was bereaved(ZX) and barren;
    I was exiled and rejected.(ZY)
    Who brought these(ZZ) up?
I was left(AAA) all alone,(AAB)
    but these—where have they come from?’”

22 This is what the Sovereign Lord(AAC) says:

“See, I will beckon to the nations,
    I will lift up my banner(AAD) to the peoples;
they will bring(AAE) your sons in their arms
    and carry your daughters on their hips.(AAF)
23 Kings(AAG) will be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.(AAH)
They will bow down(AAI) before you with their faces to the ground;
    they will lick the dust(AAJ) at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;(AAK)
    those who hope(AAL) in me will not be disappointed.(AAM)

24 Can plunder be taken from warriors,(AAN)
    or captives be rescued from the fierce[o]?

25 But this is what the Lord says:

“Yes, captives(AAO) will be taken from warriors,(AAP)
    and plunder retrieved from the fierce;(AAQ)
I will contend with those who contend with you,(AAR)
    and your children I will save.(AAS)
26 I will make your oppressors(AAT) eat(AAU) their own flesh;
    they will be drunk on their own blood,(AAV) as with wine.
Then all mankind will know(AAW)
    that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(AAX)
    your Redeemer,(AAY) the Mighty One of Jacob.(AAZ)

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce(ABA)
    with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
    did I sell(ABB) you?
Because of your sins(ABC) you were sold;(ABD)
    because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
When I came, why was there no one?
    When I called, why was there no one to answer?(ABE)
Was my arm too short(ABF) to deliver you?
    Do I lack the strength(ABG) to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke(ABH) I dry up the sea,(ABI)
    I turn rivers into a desert;(ABJ)
their fish rot for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with darkness(ABK)
    and make sackcloth(ABL) its covering.”

The Sovereign Lord(ABM) has given me a well-instructed tongue,(ABN)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.(ABO)
He wakens me morning by morning,(ABP)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.(ABQ)
The Sovereign Lord(ABR) has opened my ears;(ABS)
    I have not been rebellious,(ABT)
    I have not turned away.
I offered my back to those who beat(ABU) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;(ABV)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.(ABW)
Because the Sovereign Lord(ABX) helps(ABY) me,
    I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,(ABZ)
    and I know I will not be put to shame.(ACA)
He who vindicates(ACB) me is near.(ACC)
    Who then will bring charges against me?(ACD)
    Let us face each other!(ACE)
Who is my accuser?
    Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign Lord(ACF) who helps(ACG) me.
    Who will condemn(ACH) me?
They will all wear out like a garment;
    the moths(ACI) will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears(ACJ) the Lord
    and obeys(ACK) the word of his servant?(ACL)
Let the one who walks in the dark,
    who has no light,(ACM)
trust(ACN) in the name of the Lord
    and rely on their God.
11 But now, all you who light fires
    and provide yourselves with flaming torches,(ACO)
go, walk in the light of your fires(ACP)
    and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:(ACQ)
    You will lie down in torment.(ACR)

Everlasting Salvation for Zion

51 “Listen(ACS) to me, you who pursue righteousness(ACT)
    and who seek(ACU) the Lord:
Look to the rock(ACV) from which you were cut
    and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
look to Abraham,(ACW) your father,
    and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
    and I blessed him and made him many.(ACX)
The Lord will surely comfort(ACY) Zion(ACZ)
    and will look with compassion on all her ruins;(ADA)
he will make her deserts like Eden,(ADB)
    her wastelands(ADC) like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness(ADD) will be found in her,
    thanksgiving(ADE) and the sound of singing.

“Listen to me, my people;(ADF)
    hear me,(ADG) my nation:
Instruction(ADH) will go out from me;
    my justice(ADI) will become a light to the nations.(ADJ)
My righteousness draws near speedily,
    my salvation(ADK) is on the way,(ADL)
    and my arm(ADM) will bring justice to the nations.
The islands(ADN) will look to me
    and wait in hope(ADO) for my arm.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    look at the earth beneath;
the heavens will vanish like smoke,(ADP)
    the earth will wear out like a garment(ADQ)
    and its inhabitants die like flies.
But my salvation(ADR) will last forever,(ADS)
    my righteousness will never fail.(ADT)

“Hear me, you who know what is right,(ADU)
    you people who have taken my instruction to heart:(ADV)
Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals
    or be terrified by their insults.(ADW)
For the moth will eat them up like a garment;(ADX)
    the worm(ADY) will devour them like wool.
But my righteousness will last forever,(ADZ)
    my salvation through all generations.”

Awake, awake,(AEA) arm(AEB) of the Lord,
    clothe yourself with strength!(AEC)
Awake, as in days gone by,
    as in generations of old.(AED)
Was it not you who cut Rahab(AEE) to pieces,
    who pierced that monster(AEF) through?
10 Was it not you who dried up the sea,(AEG)
    the waters of the great deep,(AEH)
who made a road in the depths of the sea(AEI)
    so that the redeemed(AEJ) might cross over?
11 Those the Lord has rescued(AEK) will return.
    They will enter Zion with singing;(AEL)
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy(AEM) will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.(AEN)

12 “I, even I, am he who comforts(AEO) you.
    Who are you that you fear(AEP) mere mortals,(AEQ)
    human beings who are but grass,(AER)
13 that you forget(AES) the Lord your Maker,(AET)
    who stretches out the heavens(AEU)
    and who lays the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror(AEV) every day
    because of the wrath of the oppressor,
    who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?(AEW)
14     The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;(AEX)
they will not die in their dungeon,
    nor will they lack bread.(AEY)
15 For I am the Lord your God,
    who stirs up the sea(AEZ) so that its waves roar(AFA)
    the Lord Almighty(AFB) is his name.
16 I have put my words in your mouth(AFC)
    and covered you with the shadow of my hand(AFD)
I who set the heavens in place,
    who laid the foundations of the earth,(AFE)
    and who say to Zion, ‘You are my people.(AFF)’”

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

17 Awake, awake!(AFG)
    Rise up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup(AFH) of his wrath,(AFI)
you who have drained to its dregs(AFJ)
    the goblet that makes people stagger.(AFK)
18 Among all the children(AFL) she bore
    there was none to guide her;(AFM)
among all the children she reared
    there was none to take her by the hand.(AFN)
19 These double calamities(AFO) have come upon you—
    who can comfort you?(AFP)
ruin and destruction,(AFQ) famine(AFR) and sword(AFS)
    who can[p] console you?
20 Your children have fainted;
    they lie at every street corner,(AFT)
    like antelope caught in a net.(AFU)
They are filled with the wrath(AFV) of the Lord,
    with the rebuke(AFW) of your God.

21 Therefore hear this, you afflicted(AFX) one,
    made drunk,(AFY) but not with wine.
22 This is what your Sovereign Lord says,
    your God, who defends(AFZ) his people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
    the cup(AGA) that made you stagger;
from that cup, the goblet of my wrath,
    you will never drink again.
23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,(AGB)
    who said to you,
    ‘Fall prostrate(AGC) that we may walk(AGD) on you.’
And you made your back like the ground,
    like a street to be walked on.”(AGE)

52 Awake, awake,(AGF) Zion,
    clothe yourself with strength!(AGG)
Put on your garments of splendor,(AGH)
    Jerusalem, the holy city.(AGI)
The uncircumcised(AGJ) and defiled(AGK)
    will not enter you again.(AGL)
Shake off your dust;(AGM)
    rise up,(AGN) sit enthroned, Jerusalem.
Free yourself from the chains on your neck,(AGO)
    Daughter Zion,(AGP) now a captive.

For this is what the Lord says:

“You were sold for nothing,(AGQ)
    and without money(AGR) you will be redeemed.(AGS)

For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“At first my people went down to Egypt(AGT) to live;
    lately, Assyria(AGU) has oppressed them.

“And now what do I have here?” declares the Lord.

“For my people have been taken away for nothing,
    and those who rule them mock,[q]
declares the Lord.
“And all day long
    my name is constantly blasphemed.(AGV)

41 Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.

Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow.

He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet.

Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.

The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came.

They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.

So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, It is ready for the sodering: and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.

But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend.

Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.

10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.

12 Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.

13 For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

15 Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.

16 Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

18 I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.

19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together:

20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

21 Produce your cause, saith the Lord; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob.

22 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.

23 Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

24 Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you.

25 I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as upon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay.

26 Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.

27 The first shall say to Zion, Behold, behold them: and I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings.

28 For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.

29 Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.

42 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

10 Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

11 Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

12 Let them give glory unto the Lord, and declare his praise in the islands.

13 The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

14 I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.

15 I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.

16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.

19 Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lord's servant?

20 Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.

21 The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.

23 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the Lord, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.

25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

43 But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.

Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;

Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.

Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

11 I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.

12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.

13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

14 Thus saith the Lord, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.

15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

16 Thus saith the Lord, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;

17 Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.

18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

20 The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.

21 This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.

22 But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.

23 Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.

24 Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.

25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.

26 Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.

27 Thy first father hath sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.

28 Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.

44 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

One shall say, I am the Lord's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.

Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.

10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?

11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.

12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.

13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.

15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:

17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.

19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

21 Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.

22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.

24 Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

26 That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:

27 That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers:

28 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.

45 Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;

I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:

And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.

I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the Lord have created it.

Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

10 Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?

11 Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.

12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

13 I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts.

14 Thus saith the Lord, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.

15 Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.

16 They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols.

17 But Israel shall be saved in the Lord with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.

18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.

19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.

20 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.

21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.

22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

24 Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed.

25 In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

46 Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a burden to the weary beast.

They stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.

Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb:

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.

They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors.

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

12 Hearken unto me, ye stouthearted, that are far from righteousness:

13 I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry: and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.

47 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

As for our redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.

Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

48 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.

For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The Lord of hosts is his name.

I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.

Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;

I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.

Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.

Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.

For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.

10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The Lord hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.

15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.

16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

17 Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.

20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out.

22 There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.

49 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;

And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.

And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;

That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.

10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.

11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

12 Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

13 Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

14 But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

17 Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.

18 Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth.

19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.

20 The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.

21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

22 Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

25 But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

50 Thus saith the Lord, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

10 Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.

11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

51 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.

Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

10 Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

11 Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

12 I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;

13 And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

14 The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.

15 But I am the Lord thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is his name.

16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.

18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.

19 These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?

20 Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God.

21 Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:

22 Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:

23 But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.

52 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.

Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

For thus saith the Lord, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

For thus saith the Lord God, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

Now therefore, what have I here, saith the Lord, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the Lord; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.

Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

10 The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

11 Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.

12 For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the Lord will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your reward.

13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

53 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Israel Assured of God’s Help

41 “Keep (A)silence before Me, O coastlands,
And let the people renew their strength!
Let them come near, then let them speak;
Let us (B)come near together for judgment.

“Who raised up one (C)from the east?
Who in righteousness called him to His feet?
Who (D)gave the nations before him,
And made him rule over kings?
Who gave them as the dust to his sword,
As driven stubble to his bow?
Who pursued them, and passed [a]safely
By the way that he had not gone with his feet?
(E)Who has performed and done it,
Calling the generations from the beginning?
‘I, the Lord, am (F)the first;
And with the last I am (G)He.’ ”

The coastlands saw it and feared,
The ends of the earth were afraid;
They drew near and came.
(H)Everyone helped his neighbor,
And said to his brother,
[b]“Be of good courage!”
(I)So the craftsman encouraged the (J)goldsmith;[c]
He who smooths with the hammer inspired him who strikes the anvil,
Saying, [d]“It is ready for the soldering”;
Then he fastened it with pegs,
(K)That it might not totter.

“But you, Israel, are My servant,
Jacob whom I have (L)chosen,
The descendants of Abraham My (M)friend.
You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
And called from its farthest regions,
And said to you,
‘You are My servant,
I have chosen you and have not cast you away:
10 (N)Fear not, (O)for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

11 “Behold, all those who were incensed against you
Shall be (P)ashamed and disgraced;
They shall be as nothing,
And those who strive with you shall perish.
12 You shall seek them and not find them—
[e]Those who contended with you.
Those who war against you
Shall be as nothing,
As a nonexistent thing.
13 For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand,
Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’

14 “Fear not, you (Q)worm Jacob,
You men of Israel!
I will help you,” says the Lord
And your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
15 “Behold, (R)I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth;
You shall thresh the mountains and beat them small,
And make the hills like chaff.
16 You shall (S)winnow them, the wind shall carry them away,
And the whirlwind shall scatter them;
You shall rejoice in the Lord,
And (T)glory in the Holy One of Israel.

17 “The poor and needy seek water, but there is none,
Their tongues fail for thirst.
I, the Lord, will hear them;
I, the God of Israel, will not (U)forsake them.
18 I will open (V)rivers in desolate heights,
And fountains in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the (W)wilderness a pool of water,
And the dry land springs of water.
19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar and the acacia tree,
The myrtle and the oil tree;
I will set in the (X)desert the cypress tree and the pine
And the box tree together,
20 (Y)That they may see and know,
And consider and understand together,
That the hand of the Lord has done this,
And the Holy One of Israel has created it.

The Futility of Idols

21 “Present your case,” says the Lord.
“Bring forth your strong reasons,” says the (Z)King of Jacob.
22 “Let(AA) them bring forth and show us what will happen;
Let them show the (AB)former things, what they were,
That we may [f]consider them,
And know the latter end of them;
Or declare to us things to come.
23 (AC)Show the things that are to come hereafter,
That we may know that you are gods;
Yes, (AD)do good or do evil,
That we may be dismayed and see it together.
24 Indeed (AE)you are nothing,
And your work is nothing;
He who chooses you is an abomination.

25 “I have raised up one from the north,
And he shall come;
From the [g]rising of the sun (AF)he shall call on My name;
(AG)And he shall come against princes as though mortar,
As the potter treads clay.
26 (AH)Who has declared from the beginning, that we may know?
And former times, that we may say, ‘He is righteous’?
Surely there is no one who shows,
Surely there is no one who declares,
Surely there is no one who hears your words.
27 (AI)The first time (AJ)I said to Zion,
‘Look, there they are!’
And I will give to Jerusalem one who brings good tidings.
28 (AK)For I looked, and there was no man;
I looked among them, but there was no counselor,
Who, when I asked of them, could answer a word.
29 (AL)Indeed they are all [h]worthless;
Their works are nothing;
Their molded images are wind and confusion.

The Servant of the Lord

42 “Behold! (AM)My Servant whom I uphold,
My [i]Elect One in whom My soul (AN)delights!
(AO)I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
A bruised reed He will not break,
And [j]smoking flax He will not [k]quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;
(AP)And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Thus says God the Lord,
(AQ)Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it,
(AR)Who gives breath to the people on it,
And spirit to those who walk on it:
“I,(AS) the Lord, have called You in righteousness,
And will hold Your hand;
I will keep You (AT)and give You as a covenant to the people,
As (AU)a light to the Gentiles,
(AV)To open blind eyes,
To (AW)bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in (AX)darkness from the prison house.
I am the Lord, that is My name;
And My (AY)glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
And new things I declare;
Before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

Praise to the Lord

10 (AZ)Sing to the Lord a new song,
And His praise from the ends of the earth,
(BA)You who go down to the sea, and [l]all that is in it,
You coastlands and you inhabitants of them!
11 Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice,
The villages that Kedar inhabits.
Let the inhabitants of Sela sing,
Let them shout from the top of the mountains.
12 Let them give glory to the Lord,
And declare His praise in the coastlands.
13 The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man;
He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war.
He shall cry out, (BB)yes, shout aloud;
He shall prevail against His enemies.

Promise of the Lord’s Help

14 “I have held My peace a long time,
I have been still and restrained Myself.
Now I will cry like a woman in [m]labor,
I will pant and gasp at once.
15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills,
And dry up all their vegetation;
I will make the rivers coastlands,
And I will dry up the pools.
16 I will bring the blind by a way they did not know;
I will lead them in paths they have not known.
I will make darkness light before them,
And crooked places straight.
These things I will do for them,
And not forsake them.
17 They shall be (BC)turned back,
They shall be greatly ashamed,
Who trust in carved images,
Who say to the molded images,
‘You are our gods.’

18 “Hear, you deaf;
And look, you blind, that you may see.
19 (BD)Who is blind but My servant,
Or deaf as My messenger whom I send?
Who is blind as he who is perfect,
And blind as the Lord’s servant?
20 Seeing many things, (BE)but you do not observe;
Opening the ears, but he does not hear.”

Israel’s Obstinate Disobedience

21 The Lord is well pleased for His righteousness’ sake;
He will exalt the law and make it honorable.
22 But this is a people robbed and plundered;
All of them are [n]snared in holes,
And they are hidden in prison houses;
They are for prey, and no one delivers;
For plunder, and no one says, “Restore!”

23 Who among you will give ear to this?
Who will listen and hear for the time to come?
24 Who gave Jacob for plunder, and Israel to the robbers?
Was it not the Lord,
He against whom we have sinned?
(BF)For they would not walk in His ways,
Nor were they obedient to His law.
25 Therefore He has poured on him the fury of His anger
And the strength of battle;
(BG)It has set him on fire all around,
(BH)Yet he did not know;
And it burned him,
Yet he did not take it to (BI)heart.

The Redeemer of Israel

43 But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, (BJ)for I have redeemed you;
(BK)I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.
(BL)When you pass through the waters, (BM)I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you (BN)walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
For I am the Lord your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
(BO)I gave Egypt for your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in your place.
Since you were precious in My sight,
You have been honored,
And I have (BP)loved you;
Therefore I will give men for you,
And people for your life.
(BQ)Fear not, for I am with you;
I will bring your descendants from the east,
And (BR)gather you from the west;
I will say to the (BS)north, ‘Give them up!’
And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’
Bring My sons from afar,
And My daughters from the ends of the earth—
Everyone who is (BT)called by My name,
Whom (BU)I have created for My glory;
I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”

(BV)Bring out the blind people who have eyes,
And the (BW)deaf who have ears.
Let all the nations be gathered together,
And let the people be assembled.
(BX)Who among them can declare this,
And show us former things?
Let them bring out their witnesses, that they may be justified;
Or let them hear and say, “It is truth.”
10 “You(BY) are My witnesses,” says the Lord,
(BZ)“And My servant whom I have chosen,
That you may know and (CA)believe Me,
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
Nor shall there be after Me.
11 I, even I, (CB)am the Lord,
And besides Me there is no savior.
12 I have declared and saved,
I have proclaimed,
And there was no (CC)foreign god among you;
(CD)Therefore you are My witnesses,”
Says the Lord, “that I am God.
13 (CE)Indeed before the day was, I am He;
And there is no one who can deliver out of My hand;
I work, and who will (CF)reverse it?”

14 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer,
The Holy One of Israel:
“For your sake I will send to Babylon,
And bring them all down as fugitives—
The Chaldeans, who rejoice in their ships.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One,
The Creator of Israel, your (CG)King.”

16 Thus says the Lord, who (CH)makes a way in the sea
And a (CI)path through the mighty waters,
17 Who (CJ)brings forth the chariot and horse,
The army and the power
(They shall lie down together, they shall not rise;
They are extinguished, they are quenched like a wick):
18 “Do(CK) not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a (CL)new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
(CM)I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.
20 The beast of the field will honor Me,
The jackals and the ostriches,
Because (CN)I give waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My people, My chosen.
21 (CO)This people I have formed for Myself;
They shall declare My (CP)praise.

Pleading with Unfaithful Israel

22 “But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob;
And you (CQ)have been weary of Me, O Israel.
23 (CR)You have not brought Me the sheep for your burnt offerings,
Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices.
I have not caused you to serve with grain offerings,
Nor wearied you with incense.
24 You have bought Me no sweet cane with money,
Nor have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices;
But you have burdened Me with your sins,
You have (CS)wearied Me with your iniquities.

25 “I, even I, am He who (CT)blots out your transgressions (CU)for My own sake;
(CV)And I will not remember your sins.
26 Put Me in remembrance;
Let us contend together;
State your case, that you may be [o]acquitted.
27 Your first father sinned,
And your [p]mediators have transgressed against Me.
28 Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary;
(CW)I will give Jacob to the curse,
And Israel to reproaches.

God’s Blessing on Israel

44 “Yet hear now, O Jacob My servant,
And Israel whom I have chosen.
Thus says the Lord who made you
And formed you from the womb, who will help you:
‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant;
And you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring;
They will spring up among the grass
Like willows by the watercourses.’
One will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;
Another will call himself by the name of Jacob;
Another will write with his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’
And name himself by the name of Israel.

There Is No Other God

“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel,
And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
(CX)‘I am the First and I am the Last;
Besides Me there is no God.
And (CY)who can proclaim as I do?
Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me,
Since I appointed the ancient people.
And the things that are coming and shall come,
Let them show these to them.
Do not fear, nor be afraid;
(CZ)Have I not told you from that time, and declared it?
(DA)You are My witnesses.
Is there a God besides Me?
Indeed (DB)there is no other Rock;
I know not one.’ ”

Idolatry Is Foolishness

(DC)Those who make an image, all of them are useless,
And their precious things shall not profit;
They are their own witnesses;
(DD)They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.
10 Who would form a god or mold an image
(DE)That profits him nothing?
11 Surely all his companions would be (DF)ashamed;
And the workmen, they are mere men.
Let them all be gathered together,
Let them stand up;
Yet they shall fear,
They shall be ashamed together.

12 (DG)The blacksmith with the tongs works one in the coals,
Fashions it with hammers,
And works it with the strength of his arms.
Even so, he is hungry, and his strength fails;
He drinks no water and is faint.

13 The craftsman stretches out his rule,
He marks one out with chalk;
He fashions it with a plane,
He marks it out with the compass,
And makes it like the figure of a man,
According to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.
14 He cuts down cedars for himself,
And takes the cypress and the oak;
He [q]secures it for himself among the trees of the forest.
He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.

15 Then it shall be for a man to burn,
For he will take some of it and warm himself;
Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread;
Indeed he makes a god and worships it;
He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.
16 He burns half of it in the fire;
With this half he eats meat;
He roasts a roast, and is satisfied.
He even warms himself and says,
“Ah! I am warm,
I have seen the fire.”
17 And the rest of it he makes into a god,
His carved image.
He falls down before it and worships it,
Prays to it and says,
“Deliver me, for you are my god!”

18 (DH)They do not know nor understand;
For (DI)He has [r]shut their eyes, so that they cannot see,
And their hearts, so that they cannot (DJ)understand.
19 And no one (DK)considers in his heart,
Nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say,
“I have burned half of it in the fire,
Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals;
I have roasted meat and eaten it;
And shall I make the rest of it an abomination?
Shall I fall down before a block of wood?”
20 He feeds on ashes;
(DL)A deceived heart has turned him aside;
And he cannot deliver his soul,
Nor say, “Is there not a (DM)lie in my right hand?”

Israel Is Not Forgotten

21 “Remember these, O Jacob,
And Israel, for you are My servant;
I have formed you, you are My servant;
O Israel, you will not be (DN)forgotten by Me!
22 (DO)I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions,
And like a cloud, your sins.
Return to Me, for (DP)I have redeemed you.”

23 (DQ)Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it!
Shout, you lower parts of the earth;
Break forth into singing, you mountains,
O forest, and every tree in it!
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
And (DR)glorified Himself in Israel.

Judah Will Be Restored

24 Thus says the Lord, (DS)your Redeemer,
And (DT)He who formed you from the womb:
“I am the Lord, who makes all things,
(DU)Who stretches out the heavens [s]all alone,
Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;
25 Who (DV)frustrates the signs (DW)of the babblers,
And drives diviners mad;
Who turns wise men backward,
(DX)And makes their knowledge foolishness;
26 (DY)Who confirms the word of His servant,
And performs the counsel of His messengers;
Who says to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be inhabited,’
To the cities of Judah, ‘You shall be built,’
And I will raise up her waste places;
27 (DZ)Who says to the deep, ‘Be dry!
And I will dry up your rivers’;
28 Who says of (EA)Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd,
And he shall perform all My pleasure,
Saying to Jerusalem, (EB)“You shall be built,”
And to the temple, “Your foundation shall be laid.” ’

Cyrus, God’s Instrument

45 “Thus says the Lord to His anointed,
To (EC)Cyrus, whose (ED)right hand I have [t]held—
(EE)To subdue nations before him
And (EF)loose the armor of kings,
To open before him the double doors,
So that the gates will not be shut:
‘I will go before you
(EG)And[u] make the [v]crooked places straight;
(EH)I will break in pieces the gates of bronze
And cut the bars of iron.
I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,
(EI)That you may know that I, the Lord,
Who (EJ)call you by your name,
Am the God of Israel.
For (EK)Jacob My servant’s sake,
And Israel My elect,
I have even called you by your name;
I have named you, though you have not known Me.
I (EL)am the Lord, and (EM)there is no other;
There is no God besides Me.
(EN)I will gird you, though you have not known Me,
(EO)That they may (EP)know from the rising of the sun to its setting
That there is none besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other;
I form the light and create darkness,
I make peace and (EQ)create calamity;
I, the Lord, do all these things.

“Rain(ER) down, you heavens, from above,
And let the skies pour down righteousness;
Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation,
And let righteousness spring up together.
I, the Lord, have created it.

“Woe to him who strives with (ES)his Maker!
Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth!
(ET)Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’?
10 Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’
Or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ ”

11 Thus says the Lord,
The Holy One of Israel, and his Maker:
(EU)“Ask Me of things to come concerning (EV)My sons;
And concerning (EW)the work of My hands, you command Me.
12 (EX)I have made the earth,
And (EY)created man on it.
I—My hands—stretched out the heavens,
And (EZ)all their host I have commanded.
13 (FA)I have raised him up in righteousness,
And I will [w]direct all his ways;
He shall (FB)build My city
And let My exiles go free,
(FC)Not for price nor reward,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

The Lord, the Only Savior

14 Thus says the Lord:

(FD)“The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush
And of the Sabeans, men of stature,
Shall come over to you, and they shall be yours;
They shall walk behind you,
They shall come over (FE)in chains;
And they shall bow down to you.
They will make supplication to you, saying, (FF)‘Surely God is in you,
And there is no other;
(FG)There is no other God.’ ”

15 Truly You are God, (FH)who hide Yourself,
O God of Israel, the Savior!
16 They shall be (FI)ashamed
And also disgraced, all of them;
They shall go in confusion together,
Who are makers of idols.
17 (FJ)But Israel shall be saved by the Lord
With an (FK)everlasting salvation;
You shall not be ashamed or (FL)disgraced
Forever and ever.

18 For thus says the Lord,
(FM)Who created the heavens,
Who is God,
Who formed the earth and made it,
Who has established it,
Who did not create it [x]in vain,
Who formed it to be (FN)inhabited:
(FO)“I am the Lord, and there is no other.
19 I have not spoken in (FP)secret,
In a dark place of the earth;
I did not say to the seed of Jacob,
‘Seek Me [y]in vain’;
(FQ)I, the Lord, speak righteousness,
I declare things that are right.

20 “Assemble yourselves and come;
Draw near together,
You who have escaped from the nations.
(FR)They have no knowledge,
Who carry the wood of their carved image,
And pray to a god that cannot save.
21 Tell and bring forth your case;
Yes, let them take counsel together.
(FS)Who has declared this from ancient time?
Who has told it from that time?
Have not I, the Lord?
(FT)And there is no other God besides Me,
A just God and a Savior;
There is none besides Me.

22 “Look to Me, and be saved,
(FU)All you ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
23 (FV)I have sworn by Myself;
The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness,
And shall not return,
That to Me every (FW)knee shall bow,
(FX)Every tongue shall take an oath.
24 He shall say,
[z]‘Surely in the Lord I have (FY)righteousness and strength.
To Him men shall come,
And (FZ)all shall be ashamed
Who are incensed against Him.
25 (GA)In the Lord all the descendants of Israel
Shall be justified, and (GB)shall glory.’ ”

Dead Idols and the Living God

46 Bel (GC)bows down, Nebo stoops;
Their idols were on the beasts and on the cattle.
Your carriages were heavily loaded,
(GD)A burden to the weary beast.
They stoop, they bow down together;
They could not deliver the burden,
(GE)But have themselves gone into captivity.

“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob,
And all the remnant of the house of Israel,
(GF)Who have been upheld by Me from [aa]birth,
Who have been carried from the womb:
Even to your old age, (GG)I am He,
And even to gray hairs (GH)I will carry you!
I have made, and I will bear;
Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

“To(GI) whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal
And compare Me, that we should be alike?
(GJ)They lavish gold out of the bag,
And weigh silver on the scales;
They hire a (GK)goldsmith, and he makes it a god;
They prostrate themselves, yes, they worship.
(GL)They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it
And set it in its place, and it stands;
From its place it shall not move.
Though (GM)one cries out to it, yet it cannot answer
Nor save him out of his trouble.

“Remember this, and [ab]show yourselves men;
(GN)Recall to mind, O you transgressors.
(GO)Remember the former things of old,
For I am God, and (GP)there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me,
10 (GQ)Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things that are not yet done,
Saying, (GR)‘My counsel shall stand,
And I will do all My pleasure,’
11 Calling a bird of prey (GS)from the east,
The man (GT)who executes My counsel, from a far country.
Indeed (GU)I have spoken it;
I will also bring it to pass.
I have purposed it;
I will also do it.

12 “Listen to Me, you (GV)stubborn-hearted,
(GW)Who are far from righteousness:
13 (GX)I bring My righteousness near, it shall not be far off;
My salvation (GY)shall not [ac]linger.
And I will place (GZ)salvation in Zion,
For Israel My glory.

The Humiliation of Babylon

47 “Come (HA)down and (HB)sit in the dust,
O virgin daughter of (HC)Babylon;
Sit on the ground without a throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you shall no more be called
Tender and [ad]delicate.
(HD)Take the millstones and grind meal.
Remove your veil,
Take off the skirt,
Uncover the thigh,
Pass through the rivers.
(HE)Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
Yes, your shame will be seen;
(HF)I will take vengeance,
And I will not arbitrate with a man.”

As for (HG)our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.

“Sit in (HH)silence, and go into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans;
(HI)For you shall no longer be called
The Lady of Kingdoms.
(HJ)I was angry with My people;
(HK)I have profaned My inheritance,
And given them into your hand.
You showed them no mercy;
(HL)On the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily.
And you said, ‘I shall be (HM)a lady forever,’
So that you did not (HN)take these things to heart,
(HO)Nor remember the latter end of them.

“Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures,
Who dwell securely,
Who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
Nor shall I know the loss of children’;
But these two things shall come to you
(HP)In a moment, in one day:
The loss of children, and widowhood.
They shall come upon you in their fullness
Because of the multitude of your sorceries,
For the great abundance of your enchantments.

10 “For you have trusted in your wickedness;
You have said, ‘No one (HQ)sees me’;
Your wisdom and your knowledge have [ae]warped you;
And you have said in your heart,
‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’
11 Therefore evil shall come upon you;
You shall not know from where it arises.
And trouble shall fall upon you;
You will not be able [af]to put it off.
And (HR)desolation shall come upon you (HS)suddenly,
Which you shall not know.

12 “Stand now with your enchantments
And the multitude of your sorceries,
In which you have labored from your youth—
Perhaps you will be able to profit,
Perhaps you will prevail.
13 (HT)You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels;
Let now (HU)the[ag] astrologers, the stargazers,
And [ah]the monthly prognosticators
Stand up and save you
From what shall come upon you.
14 Behold, they shall be (HV)as stubble,
The fire shall (HW)burn them;
They shall not deliver themselves
From the power of the flame;
It shall not be a coal to be warmed by,
Nor a fire to sit before!
15 Thus shall they be to you
With whom you have labored,
(HX)Your merchants from your youth;
They shall wander each one to his [ai]quarter.
No one shall save you.

Israel Refined for God’s Glory

48 “Hear this, O house of Jacob,
Who are called by the name of Israel,
And have come forth from the wellsprings of Judah;
Who swear by the name of the Lord,
And make mention of the God of Israel,
But (HY)not in truth or in righteousness;
For they call themselves (HZ)after the holy city,
And (IA)lean on the God of Israel;
The Lord of hosts is His name:

“I have (IB)declared the former things from the beginning;
They went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it.
Suddenly I did them, (IC)and they came to pass.
Because I knew that you were [aj]obstinate,
And (ID)your neck was an iron sinew,
And your brow bronze,
Even from the beginning I have declared it to you;
Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you,
Lest you should say, ‘My idol has done them,
And my carved image and my molded image
Have commanded them.’

“You have heard;
See all this.
And will you not declare it?
I have made you hear new things from this time,
Even hidden things, and you did not know them.
They are created now and not from the beginning;
And before this day you have not heard them,
Lest you should say, ‘Of course I knew them.’
Surely you did not hear,
Surely you did not know;
Surely from long ago your ear was not opened.
For I knew that you would deal very treacherously,
And were called (IE)a transgressor from the womb.

“For(IF) My name’s sake (IG)I will [ak]defer My anger,
And for My praise I will restrain it from you,
So that I do not cut you off.
10 Behold, (IH)I have refined you, but not as silver;
I have tested you in the (II)furnace of affliction.
11 For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it;
For (IJ)how should My name be profaned?
And (IK)I will not give My glory to another.

God’s Ancient Plan to Redeem Israel

12 “Listen to Me, O Jacob,
And Israel, My called:
I am He, (IL)I am the (IM)First,
I am also the Last.
13 Indeed (IN)My hand has laid the foundation of the earth,
And My right hand has stretched out the heavens;
When (IO)I call to them,
They stand up together.

14 “All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear!
Who among them has declared these things?
(IP)The Lord loves him;
(IQ)He shall do His pleasure on Babylon,
And His arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
15 I, even I, have spoken;
Yes, (IR)I have called him,
I have brought him, and his way will prosper.

16 “Come near to Me, hear this:
(IS)I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there.
And now (IT)the Lord God and His Spirit
[al]Have sent Me.”

17 Thus says (IU)the Lord, your Redeemer,
The Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
Who teaches you to profit,
(IV)Who leads you by the way you should go.
18 (IW)Oh, that you had heeded My commandments!
(IX)Then your peace would have been like a river,
And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
19 (IY)Your descendants also would have been like the sand,
And the offspring of your body like the grains of sand;
His name would not have been cut off
Nor destroyed from before Me.”

20 (IZ)Go forth from Babylon!
Flee from the Chaldeans!
With a voice of singing,
Declare, proclaim this,
Utter it to the end of the earth;
Say, “The Lord has (JA)redeemed
His servant Jacob!”
21 And they (JB)did not thirst
When He led them through the deserts;
He (JC)caused the waters to flow from the rock for them;
He also split the rock, and the waters gushed out.

22 There(JD) is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”

The Servant, the Light to the Gentiles

49 “Listen, (JE)O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
(JF)The Lord has called Me from the womb;
From the [am]matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
And He has made (JG)My mouth like a sharp sword;
(JH)In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me (JI)a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”

“And He said to me,
(JJ)‘You are My servant, O Israel,
(JK)In whom I will be glorified.’
(JL)Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain;
Yet surely my [an]just reward is with the Lord,
And my [ao]work with my God.’ ”

“And now the Lord says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel (JM)is [ap]gathered to Him
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,
And My God shall be My strength),
Indeed He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a (JN)light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

Thus says the Lord,
The Redeemer of Israel, [aq]their Holy One,
(JO)To Him [ar]whom man despises,
To Him whom the nation abhors,
To the Servant of rulers:
(JP)“Kings shall see and arise,
Princes also shall worship,
Because of the Lord who is faithful,
The Holy One of Israel;
And He has chosen You.”

Thus says the Lord:

“In an (JQ)acceptable[as] time I have heard You,
And in the day of salvation I have helped You;
I will [at]preserve You (JR)and give You
As a covenant to the people,
To restore the earth,
To cause them to inherit the desolate [au]heritages;
That You may say (JS)to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’
To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’

“They shall feed along the roads,
And their pastures shall be on all desolate heights.
10 They shall neither (JT)hunger nor thirst,
(JU)Neither heat nor sun shall strike them;
For He who has mercy on them (JV)will lead them,
Even by the springs of water He will guide them.
11 (JW)I will make each of My mountains a road,
And My highways shall be elevated.
12 Surely (JX)these shall come from afar;
Look! Those from the north and the west,
And these from the land of Sinim.”

13 (JY)Sing, O heavens!
Be joyful, O earth!
And break out in singing, O mountains!
For the Lord has comforted His people,
And will have mercy on His afflicted.

God Will Remember Zion

14 (JZ)But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me,
And my Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can(KA) a woman forget her nursing child,
[av]And not have compassion on the son of her womb?
Surely they may forget,
(KB)Yet I will not forget you.
16 See, (KC)I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me.
17 Your [aw]sons shall make haste;
Your destroyers and those who laid you waste
Shall go away from you.
18 (KD)Lift up your eyes, look around and see;
All these gather together and come to you.
As I live,” says the Lord,
“You shall surely clothe yourselves with them all (KE)as an ornament,
And bind them on you as a bride does.

19 “For your waste and desolate places,
And the land of your destruction,
(KF)Will even now be too small for the inhabitants;
And those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 (KG)The children you will have,
(KH)After you have lost the others,
Will say again in your ears,
‘The place is too small for me;
Give me a place where I may dwell.’
21 Then you will say in your heart,
‘Who has begotten these for me,
Since I have lost my children and am desolate,
A captive, and wandering to and fro?
And who has brought these up?
There I was, left alone;
But these, where were they?’ ”

22 (KI)Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations,
And set up My [ax]standard for the peoples;
They shall bring your sons in their [ay]arms,
And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders;
23 (KJ)Kings shall be your foster fathers,
And their queens your nursing mothers;
They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth,
And (KK)lick up the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord,
(KL)For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.”

24 (KM)Shall the prey be taken from the mighty,
Or the captives [az]of the righteous be delivered?

25 But thus says the Lord:

“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away,
And the prey of the terrible be delivered;
For I will contend with him who contends with you,
And I will save your children.
26 I will (KN)feed those who oppress you with their own flesh,
And they shall be drunk with their own (KO)blood as with sweet wine.
All flesh (KP)shall know
That I, the Lord, am your Savior,
And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

The Servant, Israel’s Hope

50 Thus says the Lord:

“Where is (KQ)the certificate of your mother’s divorce,
Whom I have put away?
Or which of My (KR)creditors is it to whom I have sold you?
For your iniquities (KS)you have sold yourselves,
And for your transgressions your mother has been put away.
Why, when I came, was there no man?
Why, when I called, was there none to answer?
Is My hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem?
Or have I no power to deliver?
Indeed with My (KT)rebuke I dry up the sea,
I make the rivers a wilderness;
Their fish stink because there is no water,
And die of thirst.
(KU)I clothe the heavens with blackness,
(KV)And I make sackcloth their covering.”

“The(KW) Lord God has given Me
The tongue of the learned,
That I should know how to speak
A word in season to him who is (KX)weary.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear
To hear as the learned.
The Lord God (KY)has opened My ear;
And I was not (KZ)rebellious,
Nor did I turn away.
(LA)I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And (LB)My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and (LC)spitting.

“For the Lord God will help Me;
Therefore I will not be disgraced;
Therefore (LD)I have set My face like a flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
(LE)He is near who justifies Me;
Who will contend with Me?
Let us stand together.
Who is [ba]My adversary?
Let him come near Me.
Surely the Lord God will help Me;
Who is he who will condemn Me?
(LF)Indeed they will all grow old like a garment;
(LG)The moth will eat them up.

10 “Who among you fears the Lord?
Who obeys the voice of His Servant?
Who (LH)walks in darkness
And has no light?
(LI)Let him trust in the name of the Lord
And rely upon his God.
11 Look, all you who kindle a fire,
Who encircle yourselves with sparks:
Walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks you have kindled—
(LJ)This you shall have from My hand:
You shall lie down (LK)in torment.

The Lord Comforts Zion(LL)

51 “Listen to Me, (LM)you who [bb]follow after righteousness,
You who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were hewn,
And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.
(LN)Look to Abraham your father,
And to Sarah who bore you;
(LO)For I called him alone,
And (LP)blessed him and increased him.”

For the Lord will (LQ)comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places;
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
And her desert (LR)like the garden of the Lord;
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

“Listen to Me, My people;
And give ear to Me, O My nation:
(LS)For law will proceed from Me,
And I will make My justice rest
(LT)As a light of the peoples.
(LU)My righteousness is near,
My salvation has gone forth,
(LV)And My arms will judge the peoples;
(LW)The coastlands will wait upon Me,
And (LX)on My arm they will trust.
(LY)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
And look on the earth beneath.
For (LZ)the heavens will vanish away like smoke,
(MA)The earth will grow old like a garment,
And those who dwell in it will die in like manner;
But My salvation will be (MB)forever,
And My righteousness will not be [bc]abolished.

“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
You people (MC)in whose heart is My law:
(MD)Do not fear the reproach of men,
Nor be afraid of their insults.
For (ME)the moth will eat them up like a garment,
And the worm will eat them like wool;
But My righteousness will be forever,
And My salvation from generation to generation.”

(MF)Awake, awake, (MG)put on strength,
O arm of the Lord!
Awake (MH)as in the ancient days,
In the generations of old.
(MI)Are You not the arm that cut (MJ)Rahab apart,
And wounded the (MK)serpent?

10 Are You not the One who (ML)dried up the sea,
The waters of the great deep;
That made the depths of the sea a road
For the redeemed to cross over?
11 So (MM)the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness;
Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 “I, even I, am He (MN)who comforts you.
Who are you that you should be afraid
(MO)Of a man who will die,
And of the son of a man who will be made (MP)like grass?
13 And (MQ)you forget the Lord your Maker,
(MR)Who stretched out the heavens
And laid the foundations of the earth;
You have feared continually every day
Because of the fury of the oppressor,
When he has prepared to destroy.
(MS)And where is the fury of the oppressor?
14 The captive exile hastens, that he may be loosed,
(MT)That he should not die in the pit,
And that his bread should not fail.
15 But I am the Lord your God,
Who (MU)divided the sea whose waves roared—
The Lord of hosts is His name.
16 And (MV)I have put My words in your mouth;
(MW)I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,
(MX)That I may [bd]plant the heavens,
Lay the foundations of the earth,
And say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’ ”

God’s Fury Removed

17 (MY)Awake, awake!
Stand up, O Jerusalem,
You who (MZ)have drunk at the hand of the Lord
The cup of His fury;
You have drunk the dregs of the cup of trembling,
And drained it out.
18 There is no one to guide her
Among all the sons she has brought forth;
Nor is there any who takes her by the hand
Among all the sons she has brought up.
19 (NA)These two things have come to you;
Who will be sorry for you?—
Desolation and destruction, famine and sword—
(NB)By whom will I comfort you?
20 (NC)Your sons have fainted,
They lie at the head of all the streets,
Like an antelope in a net;
They are full of the fury of the Lord,
The rebuke of your God.

21 Therefore please hear this, you afflicted,
And drunk (ND)but not with wine.
22 Thus says your Lord,
The Lord and your God,
Who (NE)pleads the cause of His people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
The cup of trembling,
The dregs of the cup of My fury;
You shall no longer drink it.
23 (NF)But I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you,
Who have said to [be]you,
‘Lie down, that we may walk over you.’
And you have laid your body like the ground,
And as the street, for those who walk over.”

God Redeems Jerusalem

52 Awake, awake!
Put on your strength, O Zion;
Put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city!
For the uncircumcised (NG)and the unclean
Shall no longer come to you.
(NH)Shake yourself from the dust, arise;
Sit down, O Jerusalem!
(NI)Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion!

For thus says the Lord:

(NJ)“You have sold yourselves for nothing,
And you shall be redeemed (NK)without money.”

For thus says the Lord God:

“My people went down at first
Into (NL)Egypt to [bf]dwell there;
Then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
Now therefore, what have I here,” says the Lord,
“That My people are taken away for nothing?
Those who rule over them
[bg]Make them wail,” says the Lord,
“And My name is (NM)blasphemed continually every day.
Therefore My people shall know My name;
Therefore they shall know in that day
That I am He who speaks:
‘Behold, it is I.’ ”

(NN)How beautiful upon the mountains
Are the feet of him who brings good news,
Who proclaims peace,
Who brings glad tidings of good things,
Who proclaims salvation,
Who says to Zion,
(NO)“Your God reigns!”
Your watchmen shall lift up their voices,
With their voices they shall sing together;
For they shall see eye to eye
When the Lord brings back Zion.
Break forth into joy, sing together,
You waste places of Jerusalem!
For the Lord has comforted His people,
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 (NP)The Lord has [bh]made bare His holy arm
In the eyes of (NQ)all the nations;
And all the ends of the earth shall see
The salvation of our God.

11 (NR)Depart! Depart! Go out from there,
Touch no unclean thing;
Go out from the midst of her,
(NS)Be clean,
You who bear the vessels of the Lord.
12 For (NT)you shall not go out with haste,
Nor go by flight;
(NU)For the Lord will go before you,
(NV)And the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

The Sin-Bearing Servant

13 Behold, (NW)My Servant shall [bi]deal prudently;
(NX)He shall be exalted and [bj]extolled and be very high.
14 Just as many were astonished at you,
So His (NY)visage[bk] was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;
15 (NZ)So shall He [bl]sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
For (OA)what had not been told them they shall see,
And what they had not heard they shall consider.

The Sin-Bearing Messiah

53 Who (OB)has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no [bm]form or [bn]comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no [bo]beauty that we should desire Him.
(OC)He is despised and [bp]rejected by men,
A Man of [bq]sorrows and (OD)acquainted with [br]grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and (OE)we did not esteem Him.

Surely (OF)He has borne our [bs]griefs
And carried our [bt]sorrows;
Yet we [bu]esteemed Him stricken,
[bv]Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was (OG)wounded[bw] for our transgressions,
He was [bx]bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His (OH)stripes[by] we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord [bz]has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet (OI)He opened not His mouth;
(OJ)He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was (OK)taken from [ca]prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For (OL)He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
(OM)And [cb]they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any (ON)deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to [cc]bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul (OO)an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 [cd]He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge (OP)My righteous (OQ)Servant shall (OR)justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 (OS)Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
(OT)And He shall divide the [ce]spoil with the strong,
Because He (OU)poured out His soul unto death,
And He was (OV)numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And (OW)made intercession for the transgressors.
