The Fall of Babylon

47 “Go down, sit in the dust,(A)
    Virgin Daughter(B) Babylon;
sit on the ground without a throne,
    queen city of the Babylonians.[a](C)
No more will you be called
    tender or delicate.(D)
Take millstones(E) and grind(F) flour;
    take off your veil.(G)
Lift up your skirts,(H) bare your legs,
    and wade through the streams.
Your nakedness(I) will be exposed
    and your shame(J) uncovered.
I will take vengeance;(K)
    I will spare no one.(L)

Our Redeemer(M)—the Lord Almighty(N) is his name(O)
    is the Holy One(P) of Israel.

“Sit in silence,(Q) go into darkness,(R)
    queen city of the Babylonians;(S)
no more will you be called
    queen(T) of kingdoms.(U)
I was angry(V) with my people
    and desecrated my inheritance;(W)
I gave them into your hand,(X)
    and you showed them no mercy.(Y)
Even on the aged
    you laid a very heavy yoke.
You said, ‘I am forever(Z)
    the eternal queen!’(AA)
But you did not consider these things
    or reflect(AB) on what might happen.(AC)

“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,
    lounging in your security(AD)
and saying to yourself,
    ‘I am, and there is none besides me.(AE)
I will never be a widow(AF)
    or suffer the loss of children.’
Both of these will overtake you
    in a moment,(AG) on a single day:
    loss of children(AH) and widowhood.(AI)
They will come upon you in full measure,
    in spite of your many sorceries(AJ)
    and all your potent spells.(AK)
10 You have trusted(AL) in your wickedness
    and have said, ‘No one sees me.’(AM)
Your wisdom(AN) and knowledge mislead(AO) you
    when you say to yourself,
    ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
11 Disaster(AP) will come upon you,
    and you will not know how to conjure it away.
A calamity will fall upon you
    that you cannot ward off with a ransom;
a catastrophe you cannot foresee
    will suddenly(AQ) come upon you.

12 “Keep on, then, with your magic spells
    and with your many sorceries,(AR)
    which you have labored at since childhood.
Perhaps you will succeed,
    perhaps you will cause terror.
13 All the counsel you have received has only worn you out!(AS)
    Let your astrologers(AT) come forward,
those stargazers who make predictions month by month,
    let them save(AU) you from what is coming upon you.
14 Surely they are like stubble;(AV)
    the fire(AW) will burn them up.
They cannot even save themselves
    from the power of the flame.(AX)
These are not coals for warmth;
    this is not a fire to sit by.
15 That is all they are to you—
    these you have dealt with
    and labored(AY) with since childhood.
All of them go on in their error;
    there is not one that can save(AZ) you.

Stubborn Israel

48 “Listen to this, you descendants of Jacob,
    you who are called by the name of Israel(BA)
    and come from the line of Judah,(BB)
you who take oaths(BC) in the name of the Lord(BD)
    and invoke(BE) the God of Israel—
    but not in truth(BF) or righteousness—
you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city(BG)
    and claim to rely(BH) on the God of Israel—
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(BI)
I foretold the former things(BJ) long ago,
    my mouth announced(BK) them and I made them known;
    then suddenly(BL) I acted, and they came to pass.
For I knew how stubborn(BM) you were;
    your neck muscles(BN) were iron,
    your forehead(BO) was bronze.
Therefore I told you these things long ago;
    before they happened I announced(BP) them to you
so that you could not say,
    ‘My images brought them about;(BQ)
    my wooden image and metal god ordained them.’
You have heard these things; look at them all.
    Will you not admit them?

“From now on I will tell you of new things,(BR)
    of hidden things unknown to you.
They are created(BS) now, and not long ago;(BT)
    you have not heard of them before today.
So you cannot say,
    ‘Yes, I knew(BU) of them.’
You have neither heard nor understood;(BV)
    from of old your ears(BW) have not been open.
Well do I know how treacherous(BX) you are;
    you were called a rebel(BY) from birth.
For my own name’s sake(BZ) I delay my wrath;(CA)
    for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,
    so as not to destroy you completely.(CB)
10 See, I have refined(CC) you, though not as silver;
    I have tested(CD) you in the furnace(CE) of affliction.
11 For my own sake,(CF) for my own sake, I do this.
    How can I let myself be defamed?(CG)
    I will not yield my glory to another.(CH)

Israel Freed

12 “Listen(CI) to me, Jacob,
    Israel, whom I have called:(CJ)
I am he;(CK)
    I am the first and I am the last.(CL)
13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth,(CM)
    and my right hand spread out the heavens;(CN)
when I summon them,
    they all stand up together.(CO)

14 “Come together,(CP) all of you, and listen:
    Which of the idols has foretold(CQ) these things?
The Lord’s chosen ally(CR)
    will carry out his purpose(CS) against Babylon;(CT)
    his arm will be against the Babylonians.[b]
15 I, even I, have spoken;
    yes, I have called(CU) him.
I will bring him,
    and he will succeed(CV) in his mission.

16 “Come near(CW) me and listen(CX) to this:

“From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret;(CY)
    at the time it happens, I am there.”

And now the Sovereign Lord(CZ) has sent(DA) me,
    endowed with his Spirit.(DB)

17 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(DC) the Holy One(DD) of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches(DE) you what is best for you,
    who directs(DF) you in the way(DG) you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention(DH) to my commands,
    your peace(DI) would have been like a river,(DJ)
    your well-being(DK) like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants(DL) would have been like the sand,(DM)
    your children like its numberless grains;(DN)
their name would never be blotted out(DO)
    nor destroyed from before me.”

20 Leave Babylon,
    flee(DP) from the Babylonians!
Announce this with shouts of joy(DQ)
    and proclaim it.
Send it out to the ends of the earth;(DR)
    say, “The Lord has redeemed(DS) his servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst(DT) when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow(DU) for them from the rock;
he split the rock
    and water gushed out.(DV)

22 “There is no peace,”(DW) says the Lord, “for the wicked.”(DX)

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen(DY) to me, you islands;(DZ)
    hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born(EA) the Lord called(EB) me;
    from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.(EC)
He made my mouth(ED) like a sharpened sword,(EE)
    in the shadow of his hand(EF) he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow(EG)
    and concealed me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You are my servant,(EH)
    Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.(EI)
But I said, “I have labored in vain;(EJ)
    I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,(EK)
    and my reward(EL) is with my God.”(EM)

And now the Lord says—
    he who formed me in the womb(EN) to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
    and gather Israel(EO) to himself,
for I am[c] honored(EP) in the eyes of the Lord
    and my God has been my strength(EQ)
he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant(ER)
    to restore the tribes of Jacob
    and bring back those of Israel I have kept.(ES)
I will also make you a light(ET) for the Gentiles,(EU)
    that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”(EV)

This is what the Lord says—
    the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel(EW)
to him who was despised(EX) and abhorred by the nation,
    to the servant of rulers:
“Kings(EY) will see you and stand up,
    princes will see and bow down,(EZ)
because of the Lord, who is faithful,(FA)
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen(FB) you.”

Restoration of Israel

This is what the Lord says:

“In the time of my favor(FC) I will answer you,
    and in the day of salvation I will help you;(FD)
I will keep(FE) you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people,(FF)
to restore the land(FG)
    and to reassign its desolate inheritances,(FH)
to say to the captives,(FI) ‘Come out,’
    and to those in darkness,(FJ) ‘Be free!’

“They will feed beside the roads
    and find pasture on every barren hill.(FK)
10 They will neither hunger nor thirst,(FL)
    nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them.(FM)
He who has compassion(FN) on them will guide(FO) them
    and lead them beside springs(FP) of water.
11 I will turn all my mountains into roads,
    and my highways(FQ) will be raised up.(FR)
12 See, they will come from afar(FS)
    some from the north, some from the west,(FT)
    some from the region of Aswan.[d]

13 Shout for joy,(FU) you heavens;
    rejoice, you earth;(FV)
    burst into song, you mountains!(FW)
For the Lord comforts(FX) his people
    and will have compassion(FY) on his afflicted ones.(FZ)

14 But Zion(GA) said, “The Lord has forsaken(GB) me,
    the Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child(GC) she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!(GD)
16 See, I have engraved(GE) you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls(GF) are ever before me.
17 Your children hasten back,
    and those who laid you waste(GG) depart from you.
18 Lift up your eyes and look around;
    all your children gather(GH) and come to you.
As surely as I live,(GI)” declares the Lord,
    “you will wear(GJ) them all as ornaments;
    you will put them on, like a bride.

19 “Though you were ruined and made desolate(GK)
    and your land laid waste,(GL)
now you will be too small for your people,(GM)
    and those who devoured(GN) you will be far away.
20 The children born during your bereavement
    will yet say in your hearing,
‘This place is too small for us;
    give us more space to live in.’(GO)
21 Then you will say in your heart,
    ‘Who bore me these?(GP)
I was bereaved(GQ) and barren;
    I was exiled and rejected.(GR)
    Who brought these(GS) up?
I was left(GT) all alone,(GU)
    but these—where have they come from?’”

22 This is what the Sovereign Lord(GV) says:

“See, I will beckon to the nations,
    I will lift up my banner(GW) to the peoples;
they will bring(GX) your sons in their arms
    and carry your daughters on their hips.(GY)
23 Kings(GZ) will be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.(HA)
They will bow down(HB) before you with their faces to the ground;
    they will lick the dust(HC) at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;(HD)
    those who hope(HE) in me will not be disappointed.(HF)

24 Can plunder be taken from warriors,(HG)
    or captives be rescued from the fierce[e]?

25 But this is what the Lord says:

“Yes, captives(HH) will be taken from warriors,(HI)
    and plunder retrieved from the fierce;(HJ)
I will contend with those who contend with you,(HK)
    and your children I will save.(HL)
26 I will make your oppressors(HM) eat(HN) their own flesh;
    they will be drunk on their own blood,(HO) as with wine.
Then all mankind will know(HP)
    that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(HQ)
    your Redeemer,(HR) the Mighty One of Jacob.(HS)

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce(HT)
    with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
    did I sell(HU) you?
Because of your sins(HV) you were sold;(HW)
    because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
When I came, why was there no one?
    When I called, why was there no one to answer?(HX)
Was my arm too short(HY) to deliver you?
    Do I lack the strength(HZ) to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke(IA) I dry up the sea,(IB)
    I turn rivers into a desert;(IC)
their fish rot for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with darkness(ID)
    and make sackcloth(IE) its covering.”

The Sovereign Lord(IF) has given me a well-instructed tongue,(IG)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.(IH)
He wakens me morning by morning,(II)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.(IJ)
The Sovereign Lord(IK) has opened my ears;(IL)
    I have not been rebellious,(IM)
    I have not turned away.
I offered my back to those who beat(IN) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;(IO)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.(IP)
Because the Sovereign Lord(IQ) helps(IR) me,
    I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,(IS)
    and I know I will not be put to shame.(IT)
He who vindicates(IU) me is near.(IV)
    Who then will bring charges against me?(IW)
    Let us face each other!(IX)
Who is my accuser?
    Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign Lord(IY) who helps(IZ) me.
    Who will condemn(JA) me?
They will all wear out like a garment;
    the moths(JB) will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears(JC) the Lord
    and obeys(JD) the word of his servant?(JE)
Let the one who walks in the dark,
    who has no light,(JF)
trust(JG) in the name of the Lord
    and rely on their God.
11 But now, all you who light fires
    and provide yourselves with flaming torches,(JH)
go, walk in the light of your fires(JI)
    and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:(JJ)
    You will lie down in torment.(JK)

Everlasting Salvation for Zion

51 “Listen(JL) to me, you who pursue righteousness(JM)
    and who seek(JN) the Lord:
Look to the rock(JO) from which you were cut
    and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
look to Abraham,(JP) your father,
    and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
    and I blessed him and made him many.(JQ)
The Lord will surely comfort(JR) Zion(JS)
    and will look with compassion on all her ruins;(JT)
he will make her deserts like Eden,(JU)
    her wastelands(JV) like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness(JW) will be found in her,
    thanksgiving(JX) and the sound of singing.

“Listen to me, my people;(JY)
    hear me,(JZ) my nation:
Instruction(KA) will go out from me;
    my justice(KB) will become a light to the nations.(KC)
My righteousness draws near speedily,
    my salvation(KD) is on the way,(KE)
    and my arm(KF) will bring justice to the nations.
The islands(KG) will look to me
    and wait in hope(KH) for my arm.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    look at the earth beneath;
the heavens will vanish like smoke,(KI)
    the earth will wear out like a garment(KJ)
    and its inhabitants die like flies.
But my salvation(KK) will last forever,(KL)
    my righteousness will never fail.(KM)

“Hear me, you who know what is right,(KN)
    you people who have taken my instruction to heart:(KO)
Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals
    or be terrified by their insults.(KP)
For the moth will eat them up like a garment;(KQ)
    the worm(KR) will devour them like wool.
But my righteousness will last forever,(KS)
    my salvation through all generations.”

Awake, awake,(KT) arm(KU) of the Lord,
    clothe yourself with strength!(KV)
Awake, as in days gone by,
    as in generations of old.(KW)
Was it not you who cut Rahab(KX) to pieces,
    who pierced that monster(KY) through?
10 Was it not you who dried up the sea,(KZ)
    the waters of the great deep,(LA)
who made a road in the depths of the sea(LB)
    so that the redeemed(LC) might cross over?
11 Those the Lord has rescued(LD) will return.
    They will enter Zion with singing;(LE)
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy(LF) will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.(LG)

12 “I, even I, am he who comforts(LH) you.
    Who are you that you fear(LI) mere mortals,(LJ)
    human beings who are but grass,(LK)
13 that you forget(LL) the Lord your Maker,(LM)
    who stretches out the heavens(LN)
    and who lays the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror(LO) every day
    because of the wrath of the oppressor,
    who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?(LP)
14     The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;(LQ)
they will not die in their dungeon,
    nor will they lack bread.(LR)
15 For I am the Lord your God,
    who stirs up the sea(LS) so that its waves roar(LT)
    the Lord Almighty(LU) is his name.
16 I have put my words in your mouth(LV)
    and covered you with the shadow of my hand(LW)
I who set the heavens in place,
    who laid the foundations of the earth,(LX)
    and who say to Zion, ‘You are my people.(LY)’”

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

17 Awake, awake!(LZ)
    Rise up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup(MA) of his wrath,(MB)
you who have drained to its dregs(MC)
    the goblet that makes people stagger.(MD)
18 Among all the children(ME) she bore
    there was none to guide her;(MF)
among all the children she reared
    there was none to take her by the hand.(MG)
19 These double calamities(MH) have come upon you—
    who can comfort you?(MI)
ruin and destruction,(MJ) famine(MK) and sword(ML)
    who can[f] console you?
20 Your children have fainted;
    they lie at every street corner,(MM)
    like antelope caught in a net.(MN)
They are filled with the wrath(MO) of the Lord,
    with the rebuke(MP) of your God.

21 Therefore hear this, you afflicted(MQ) one,
    made drunk,(MR) but not with wine.
22 This is what your Sovereign Lord says,
    your God, who defends(MS) his people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
    the cup(MT) that made you stagger;
from that cup, the goblet of my wrath,
    you will never drink again.
23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,(MU)
    who said to you,
    ‘Fall prostrate(MV) that we may walk(MW) on you.’
And you made your back like the ground,
    like a street to be walked on.”(MX)

47 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

As for our redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.

Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

48 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.

For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The Lord of hosts is his name.

I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.

Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;

I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.

Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.

Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.

For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.

10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The Lord hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.

15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.

16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

17 Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.

20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out.

22 There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.

49 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;

And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.

And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;

That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.

10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.

11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

12 Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

13 Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

14 But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

17 Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.

18 Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth.

19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.

20 The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.

21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

22 Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

25 But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

50 Thus saith the Lord, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

10 Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.

11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

51 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.

Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

10 Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

11 Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

12 I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;

13 And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

14 The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.

15 But I am the Lord thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is his name.

16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.

18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.

19 These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?

20 Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God.

21 Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:

22 Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:

23 But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.

The Humiliation of Babylon

47 “Come (A)down and (B)sit in the dust,
O virgin daughter of (C)Babylon;
Sit on the ground without a throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you shall no more be called
Tender and [a]delicate.
(D)Take the millstones and grind meal.
Remove your veil,
Take off the skirt,
Uncover the thigh,
Pass through the rivers.
(E)Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
Yes, your shame will be seen;
(F)I will take vengeance,
And I will not arbitrate with a man.”

As for (G)our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.

“Sit in (H)silence, and go into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans;
(I)For you shall no longer be called
The Lady of Kingdoms.
(J)I was angry with My people;
(K)I have profaned My inheritance,
And given them into your hand.
You showed them no mercy;
(L)On the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily.
And you said, ‘I shall be (M)a lady forever,’
So that you did not (N)take these things to heart,
(O)Nor remember the latter end of them.

“Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures,
Who dwell securely,
Who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
Nor shall I know the loss of children’;
But these two things shall come to you
(P)In a moment, in one day:
The loss of children, and widowhood.
They shall come upon you in their fullness
Because of the multitude of your sorceries,
For the great abundance of your enchantments.

10 “For you have trusted in your wickedness;
You have said, ‘No one (Q)sees me’;
Your wisdom and your knowledge have [b]warped you;
And you have said in your heart,
‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’
11 Therefore evil shall come upon you;
You shall not know from where it arises.
And trouble shall fall upon you;
You will not be able [c]to put it off.
And (R)desolation shall come upon you (S)suddenly,
Which you shall not know.

12 “Stand now with your enchantments
And the multitude of your sorceries,
In which you have labored from your youth—
Perhaps you will be able to profit,
Perhaps you will prevail.
13 (T)You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels;
Let now (U)the[d] astrologers, the stargazers,
And [e]the monthly prognosticators
Stand up and save you
From what shall come upon you.
14 Behold, they shall be (V)as stubble,
The fire shall (W)burn them;
They shall not deliver themselves
From the power of the flame;
It shall not be a coal to be warmed by,
Nor a fire to sit before!
15 Thus shall they be to you
With whom you have labored,
(X)Your merchants from your youth;
They shall wander each one to his [f]quarter.
No one shall save you.

Israel Refined for God’s Glory

48 “Hear this, O house of Jacob,
Who are called by the name of Israel,
And have come forth from the wellsprings of Judah;
Who swear by the name of the Lord,
And make mention of the God of Israel,
But (Y)not in truth or in righteousness;
For they call themselves (Z)after the holy city,
And (AA)lean on the God of Israel;
The Lord of hosts is His name:

“I have (AB)declared the former things from the beginning;
They went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it.
Suddenly I did them, (AC)and they came to pass.
Because I knew that you were [g]obstinate,
And (AD)your neck was an iron sinew,
And your brow bronze,
Even from the beginning I have declared it to you;
Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you,
Lest you should say, ‘My idol has done them,
And my carved image and my molded image
Have commanded them.’

“You have heard;
See all this.
And will you not declare it?
I have made you hear new things from this time,
Even hidden things, and you did not know them.
They are created now and not from the beginning;
And before this day you have not heard them,
Lest you should say, ‘Of course I knew them.’
Surely you did not hear,
Surely you did not know;
Surely from long ago your ear was not opened.
For I knew that you would deal very treacherously,
And were called (AE)a transgressor from the womb.

“For(AF) My name’s sake (AG)I will [h]defer My anger,
And for My praise I will restrain it from you,
So that I do not cut you off.
10 Behold, (AH)I have refined you, but not as silver;
I have tested you in the (AI)furnace of affliction.
11 For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it;
For (AJ)how should My name be profaned?
And (AK)I will not give My glory to another.

God’s Ancient Plan to Redeem Israel

12 “Listen to Me, O Jacob,
And Israel, My called:
I am He, (AL)I am the (AM)First,
I am also the Last.
13 Indeed (AN)My hand has laid the foundation of the earth,
And My right hand has stretched out the heavens;
When (AO)I call to them,
They stand up together.

14 “All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear!
Who among them has declared these things?
(AP)The Lord loves him;
(AQ)He shall do His pleasure on Babylon,
And His arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
15 I, even I, have spoken;
Yes, (AR)I have called him,
I have brought him, and his way will prosper.

16 “Come near to Me, hear this:
(AS)I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there.
And now (AT)the Lord God and His Spirit
[i]Have sent Me.”

17 Thus says (AU)the Lord, your Redeemer,
The Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
Who teaches you to profit,
(AV)Who leads you by the way you should go.
18 (AW)Oh, that you had heeded My commandments!
(AX)Then your peace would have been like a river,
And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
19 (AY)Your descendants also would have been like the sand,
And the offspring of your body like the grains of sand;
His name would not have been cut off
Nor destroyed from before Me.”

20 (AZ)Go forth from Babylon!
Flee from the Chaldeans!
With a voice of singing,
Declare, proclaim this,
Utter it to the end of the earth;
Say, “The Lord has (BA)redeemed
His servant Jacob!”
21 And they (BB)did not thirst
When He led them through the deserts;
He (BC)caused the waters to flow from the rock for them;
He also split the rock, and the waters gushed out.

22 There(BD) is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”

The Servant, the Light to the Gentiles

49 “Listen, (BE)O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
(BF)The Lord has called Me from the womb;
From the [j]matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
And He has made (BG)My mouth like a sharp sword;
(BH)In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me (BI)a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”

“And He said to me,
(BJ)‘You are My servant, O Israel,
(BK)In whom I will be glorified.’
(BL)Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain;
Yet surely my [k]just reward is with the Lord,
And my [l]work with my God.’ ”

“And now the Lord says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel (BM)is [m]gathered to Him
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,
And My God shall be My strength),
Indeed He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a (BN)light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

Thus says the Lord,
The Redeemer of Israel, [n]their Holy One,
(BO)To Him [o]whom man despises,
To Him whom the nation abhors,
To the Servant of rulers:
(BP)“Kings shall see and arise,
Princes also shall worship,
Because of the Lord who is faithful,
The Holy One of Israel;
And He has chosen You.”

Thus says the Lord:

“In an (BQ)acceptable[p] time I have heard You,
And in the day of salvation I have helped You;
I will [q]preserve You (BR)and give You
As a covenant to the people,
To restore the earth,
To cause them to inherit the desolate [r]heritages;
That You may say (BS)to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’
To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’

“They shall feed along the roads,
And their pastures shall be on all desolate heights.
10 They shall neither (BT)hunger nor thirst,
(BU)Neither heat nor sun shall strike them;
For He who has mercy on them (BV)will lead them,
Even by the springs of water He will guide them.
11 (BW)I will make each of My mountains a road,
And My highways shall be elevated.
12 Surely (BX)these shall come from afar;
Look! Those from the north and the west,
And these from the land of Sinim.”

13 (BY)Sing, O heavens!
Be joyful, O earth!
And break out in singing, O mountains!
For the Lord has comforted His people,
And will have mercy on His afflicted.

God Will Remember Zion

14 (BZ)But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me,
And my Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can(CA) a woman forget her nursing child,
[s]And not have compassion on the son of her womb?
Surely they may forget,
(CB)Yet I will not forget you.
16 See, (CC)I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me.
17 Your [t]sons shall make haste;
Your destroyers and those who laid you waste
Shall go away from you.
18 (CD)Lift up your eyes, look around and see;
All these gather together and come to you.
As I live,” says the Lord,
“You shall surely clothe yourselves with them all (CE)as an ornament,
And bind them on you as a bride does.

19 “For your waste and desolate places,
And the land of your destruction,
(CF)Will even now be too small for the inhabitants;
And those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 (CG)The children you will have,
(CH)After you have lost the others,
Will say again in your ears,
‘The place is too small for me;
Give me a place where I may dwell.’
21 Then you will say in your heart,
‘Who has begotten these for me,
Since I have lost my children and am desolate,
A captive, and wandering to and fro?
And who has brought these up?
There I was, left alone;
But these, where were they?’ ”

22 (CI)Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations,
And set up My [u]standard for the peoples;
They shall bring your sons in their [v]arms,
And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders;
23 (CJ)Kings shall be your foster fathers,
And their queens your nursing mothers;
They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth,
And (CK)lick up the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord,
(CL)For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.”

24 (CM)Shall the prey be taken from the mighty,
Or the captives [w]of the righteous be delivered?

25 But thus says the Lord:

“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away,
And the prey of the terrible be delivered;
For I will contend with him who contends with you,
And I will save your children.
26 I will (CN)feed those who oppress you with their own flesh,
And they shall be drunk with their own (CO)blood as with sweet wine.
All flesh (CP)shall know
That I, the Lord, am your Savior,
And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

The Servant, Israel’s Hope

50 Thus says the Lord:

“Where is (CQ)the certificate of your mother’s divorce,
Whom I have put away?
Or which of My (CR)creditors is it to whom I have sold you?
For your iniquities (CS)you have sold yourselves,
And for your transgressions your mother has been put away.
Why, when I came, was there no man?
Why, when I called, was there none to answer?
Is My hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem?
Or have I no power to deliver?
Indeed with My (CT)rebuke I dry up the sea,
I make the rivers a wilderness;
Their fish stink because there is no water,
And die of thirst.
(CU)I clothe the heavens with blackness,
(CV)And I make sackcloth their covering.”

“The(CW) Lord God has given Me
The tongue of the learned,
That I should know how to speak
A word in season to him who is (CX)weary.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear
To hear as the learned.
The Lord God (CY)has opened My ear;
And I was not (CZ)rebellious,
Nor did I turn away.
(DA)I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And (DB)My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and (DC)spitting.

“For the Lord God will help Me;
Therefore I will not be disgraced;
Therefore (DD)I have set My face like a flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
(DE)He is near who justifies Me;
Who will contend with Me?
Let us stand together.
Who is [x]My adversary?
Let him come near Me.
Surely the Lord God will help Me;
Who is he who will condemn Me?
(DF)Indeed they will all grow old like a garment;
(DG)The moth will eat them up.

10 “Who among you fears the Lord?
Who obeys the voice of His Servant?
Who (DH)walks in darkness
And has no light?
(DI)Let him trust in the name of the Lord
And rely upon his God.
11 Look, all you who kindle a fire,
Who encircle yourselves with sparks:
Walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks you have kindled—
(DJ)This you shall have from My hand:
You shall lie down (DK)in torment.

The Lord Comforts Zion(DL)

51 “Listen to Me, (DM)you who [y]follow after righteousness,
You who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were hewn,
And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.
(DN)Look to Abraham your father,
And to Sarah who bore you;
(DO)For I called him alone,
And (DP)blessed him and increased him.”

For the Lord will (DQ)comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places;
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
And her desert (DR)like the garden of the Lord;
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

“Listen to Me, My people;
And give ear to Me, O My nation:
(DS)For law will proceed from Me,
And I will make My justice rest
(DT)As a light of the peoples.
(DU)My righteousness is near,
My salvation has gone forth,
(DV)And My arms will judge the peoples;
(DW)The coastlands will wait upon Me,
And (DX)on My arm they will trust.
(DY)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
And look on the earth beneath.
For (DZ)the heavens will vanish away like smoke,
(EA)The earth will grow old like a garment,
And those who dwell in it will die in like manner;
But My salvation will be (EB)forever,
And My righteousness will not be [z]abolished.

“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
You people (EC)in whose heart is My law:
(ED)Do not fear the reproach of men,
Nor be afraid of their insults.
For (EE)the moth will eat them up like a garment,
And the worm will eat them like wool;
But My righteousness will be forever,
And My salvation from generation to generation.”

(EF)Awake, awake, (EG)put on strength,
O arm of the Lord!
Awake (EH)as in the ancient days,
In the generations of old.
(EI)Are You not the arm that cut (EJ)Rahab apart,
And wounded the (EK)serpent?

10 Are You not the One who (EL)dried up the sea,
The waters of the great deep;
That made the depths of the sea a road
For the redeemed to cross over?
11 So (EM)the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness;
Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 “I, even I, am He (EN)who comforts you.
Who are you that you should be afraid
(EO)Of a man who will die,
And of the son of a man who will be made (EP)like grass?
13 And (EQ)you forget the Lord your Maker,
(ER)Who stretched out the heavens
And laid the foundations of the earth;
You have feared continually every day
Because of the fury of the oppressor,
When he has prepared to destroy.
(ES)And where is the fury of the oppressor?
14 The captive exile hastens, that he may be loosed,
(ET)That he should not die in the pit,
And that his bread should not fail.
15 But I am the Lord your God,
Who (EU)divided the sea whose waves roared—
The Lord of hosts is His name.
16 And (EV)I have put My words in your mouth;
(EW)I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,
(EX)That I may [aa]plant the heavens,
Lay the foundations of the earth,
And say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’ ”

God’s Fury Removed

17 (EY)Awake, awake!
Stand up, O Jerusalem,
You who (EZ)have drunk at the hand of the Lord
The cup of His fury;
You have drunk the dregs of the cup of trembling,
And drained it out.
18 There is no one to guide her
Among all the sons she has brought forth;
Nor is there any who takes her by the hand
Among all the sons she has brought up.
19 (FA)These two things have come to you;
Who will be sorry for you?—
Desolation and destruction, famine and sword—
(FB)By whom will I comfort you?
20 (FC)Your sons have fainted,
They lie at the head of all the streets,
Like an antelope in a net;
They are full of the fury of the Lord,
The rebuke of your God.

21 Therefore please hear this, you afflicted,
And drunk (FD)but not with wine.
22 Thus says your Lord,
The Lord and your God,
Who (FE)pleads the cause of His people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
The cup of trembling,
The dregs of the cup of My fury;
You shall no longer drink it.
23 (FF)But I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you,
Who have said to [ab]you,
‘Lie down, that we may walk over you.’
And you have laid your body like the ground,
And as the street, for those who walk over.”
