10 (A)I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
(B)for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself (C)like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    (D)and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause (E)righteousness and praise
    to sprout up before all the nations.

Zion's Coming Salvation

62 (F)For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,
    and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet,
(G)until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
    and her salvation as a burning torch.
(H)The nations shall see your righteousness,
    and all the kings your glory,
(I)and you shall be called by a new name
    that the mouth of the Lord will give.
You shall be (J)a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
(K)You shall no more be termed (L)Forsaken,[a]
    and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,[b]
(M)but you shall be called (N)My Delight Is in Her,[c]
    and your land Married;[d]
for the Lord delights in you,
    and your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a young woman,
    so (O)shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
    so (P)shall your God rejoice over you.

On your walls, O Jerusalem,
    I have set (Q)watchmen;
all the day and all the night
    they shall never be silent.
You who put the Lord in remembrance,
    take no rest,
and give him no rest
    until he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes it (R)a praise in the earth.
The Lord has sworn (S)by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“I will not again give (T)your grain
    to be food for your enemies,
(U)and foreigners shall not drink your wine
    for which you have labored;
but (V)those who garner it shall eat it
    and praise the Lord,
and (W)those who gather it shall drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”[e]

10 Go through, go through the gates;
    (X)prepare the way for the people;
(Y)build up, build up the highway;
    clear it of stones;
    (Z)lift up a signal over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed
    to the end of the earth:
(AA)Say to the daughter of Zion,
    (AB)“Behold, your salvation comes;
behold, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense before him.”
12 (AC)And they shall be called The Holy People,
    The Redeemed of the Lord;
(AD)and you shall be called Sought Out,
    A City Not Forsaken.

The Lord's Day of Vengeance

63 Who is this who comes from (AE)Edom,
    in crimsoned garments from (AF)Bozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
    (AG)marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
    mighty to save.”

Why is your (AH)apparel red,
    and your garments like his (AI)who treads in the winepress?

(AJ)“I have trodden the winepress alone,
    (AK)and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
    and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood[f] spattered on my garments,
    and stained all my apparel.
(AL)For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
    and my year of redemption[g] had come.
I looked, but (AM)there was no one to help;
    I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
    and my wrath upheld me.
I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
    (AN)I made them drunk in my wrath,
    and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

The Lord's Mercy Remembered

I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    (AO)and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.
(AP)In all their affliction he was afflicted,[h]
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
(AQ)in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    (AR)he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
    my soul rejoices(A) in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,(B)
as a bridegroom adorns his head(C) like a priest,
    and as a bride(D) adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
    and a garden(E) causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness(F)
    and praise spring up before all nations.

Zion’s New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,(G)
    for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet,
till her vindication(H) shines out like the dawn,(I)
    her salvation(J) like a blazing torch.
The nations(K) will see your vindication,
    and all kings your glory;
you will be called by a new name(L)
    that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.
You will be a crown(M) of splendor in the Lord’s hand,
    a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
No longer will they call you Deserted,(N)
    or name your land Desolate.(O)
But you will be called Hephzibah,[a](P)
    and your land Beulah[b];
for the Lord will take delight(Q) in you,
    and your land will be married.(R)
As a young man marries a young woman,
    so will your Builder marry you;
as a bridegroom(S) rejoices over his bride,
    so will your God rejoice(T) over you.

I have posted watchmen(U) on your walls, Jerusalem;
    they will never be silent day or night.
You who call on the Lord,
    give yourselves no rest,(V)
and give him no rest(W) till he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes her the praise(X) of the earth.

The Lord has sworn(Y) by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“Never again will I give your grain(Z)
    as food for your enemies,
and never again will foreigners drink the new wine
    for which you have toiled;
but those who harvest it will eat(AA) it
    and praise the Lord,(AB)
and those who gather the grapes will drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”(AC)

10 Pass through, pass through the gates!(AD)
    Prepare the way for the people.
Build up, build up the highway!(AE)
    Remove the stones.
Raise a banner(AF) for the nations.

11 The Lord has made proclamation
    to the ends of the earth:(AG)
“Say to Daughter Zion,(AH)
    ‘See, your Savior comes!(AI)
See, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense accompanies him.’”(AJ)
12 They will be called(AK) the Holy People,(AL)
    the Redeemed(AM) of the Lord;
and you will be called Sought After,
    the City No Longer Deserted.(AN)

God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

63 Who is this coming from Edom,(AO)
    from Bozrah,(AP) with his garments stained crimson?(AQ)
Who is this, robed in splendor,
    striding forward in the greatness of his strength?(AR)

“It is I, proclaiming victory,
    mighty to save.”(AS)

Why are your garments red,
    like those of one treading the winepress?(AT)

“I have trodden the winepress(AU) alone;
    from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled(AV) them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;(AW)
their blood spattered my garments,(AX)
    and I stained all my clothing.
It was for me the day of vengeance;(AY)
    the year for me to redeem had come.
I looked, but there was no one(AZ) to help,
    I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm(BA) achieved salvation for me,
    and my own wrath sustained me.(BB)
I trampled(BC) the nations in my anger;
    in my wrath I made them drunk(BD)
    and poured their blood(BE) on the ground.”

Praise and Prayer

I will tell of the kindnesses(BF) of the Lord,
    the deeds for which he is to be praised,
    according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things(BG)
    he has done for Israel,
    according to his compassion(BH) and many kindnesses.
He said, “Surely they are my people,(BI)
    children who will be true to me”;
    and so he became their Savior.(BJ)
In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel(BK) of his presence(BL) saved them.[c]
In his love and mercy he redeemed(BM) them;
    he lifted them up and carried(BN) them
    all the days of old.(BO)

Footnotes

  1. Isaiah 62:4 Hephzibah means my delight is in her.
  2. Isaiah 62:4 Beulah means married.
  3. Isaiah 63:9 Or Savior in their distress. / It was no envoy or angel / but his own presence that saved them

10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

62 For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.

And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.

Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the Lord delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.

I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence,

And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.

The Lord hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:

But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the Lord; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my holiness.

10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people.

11 Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

12 And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

63 Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.

And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
