In days to come Jacob will take root,(A)
    Israel will bud and blossom(B)
    and fill all the world with fruit.(C)

Has the Lord struck her
    as he struck(D) down those who struck her?
Has she been killed
    as those were killed who killed her?
By warfare[a] and exile(E) you contend with her—
    with his fierce blast he drives her out,
    as on a day the east wind(F) blows.
By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned(G) for,
    and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin:(H)
When he makes all the altar stones(I)
    to be like limestone crushed to pieces,
no Asherah poles[b](J) or incense altars(K)
    will be left standing.
10 The fortified city stands desolate,(L)
    an abandoned settlement, forsaken(M) like the wilderness;
there the calves graze,(N)
    there they lie down;(O)
    they strip its branches bare.
11 When its twigs are dry, they are broken off(P)
    and women come and make fires(Q) with them.
For this is a people without understanding;(R)
    so their Maker has no compassion on them,
    and their Creator(S) shows them no favor.(T)

12 In that day the Lord will thresh(U) from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt,(V) and you, Israel, will be gathered(W) up one by one. 13 And in that day(X) a great trumpet(Y) will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled(Z) in Egypt(AA) will come and worship(AB) the Lord on the holy mountain(AC) in Jerusalem.

Woe to the Leaders of Ephraim and Judah

28 Woe(AD) to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s(AE) drunkards,
    to the fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set on the head of a fertile valley(AF)
    to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!(AG)
See, the Lord has one who is powerful(AH) and strong.
    Like a hailstorm(AI) and a destructive wind,(AJ)
like a driving rain and a flooding(AK) downpour,
    he will throw it forcefully to the ground.
That wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s(AL) drunkards,
    will be trampled(AM) underfoot.
That fading flower, his glorious beauty,
    set on the head of a fertile valley,(AN)
will be like figs(AO) ripe before harvest—
    as soon as people see them and take them in hand,
    they swallow them.

In that day(AP) the Lord Almighty
    will be a glorious(AQ) crown,(AR)
a beautiful wreath
    for the remnant(AS) of his people.
He will be a spirit of justice(AT)
    to the one who sits in judgment,(AU)
a source of strength
    to those who turn back the battle(AV) at the gate.

And these also stagger(AW) from wine(AX)
    and reel(AY) from beer:
Priests(AZ) and prophets(BA) stagger from beer
    and are befuddled with wine;
they reel from beer,
    they stagger when seeing visions,(BB)
    they stumble when rendering decisions.
All the tables are covered with vomit(BC)
    and there is not a spot without filth.

“Who is it he is trying to teach?(BD)
    To whom is he explaining his message?(BE)
To children weaned(BF) from their milk,(BG)
    to those just taken from the breast?
10 For it is:
    Do this, do that,
    a rule for this, a rule for that[c];
    a little here, a little there.(BH)

11 Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues(BI)
    God will speak to this people,(BJ)
12 to whom he said,
    “This is the resting place, let the weary rest”;(BK)
and, “This is the place of repose”—
    but they would not listen.
13 So then, the word of the Lord to them will become:
    Do this, do that,
    a rule for this, a rule for that;
    a little here, a little there(BL)
so that as they go they will fall backward;
    they will be injured(BM) and snared and captured.(BN)
