50 Thus saith Jehovah, Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement, wherewith I have put her away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities were ye sold, and for your transgressions was your mother put away. ² Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stink, because there is no water, and die for thirst. ³ I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

⁴ The Lord Jehovah hath given me the tongue of ^[a]them that are taught, that I may know how ^[b]to sustain with words him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as ^[c]they that are taught. ⁵ The Lord Jehovah hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away backward. ⁶ I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. ⁷ For the Lord Jehovah will help me; therefore have I not been confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. ⁸ He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. ⁹ Behold, the Lord Jehovah will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? behold, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

¹⁰ Who is among you that feareth Jehovah, that obeyeth the voice of his servant? ^[d]he that walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of Jehovah, and rely upon his God. ¹¹ Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that gird yourselves about with firebrands; walk ye in the flame of your fire, and among the brands that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of my hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

51 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek Jehovah: look unto the rock whence ye were hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye were digged. ² Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you; for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him, and made him many. ³ For Jehovah hath comforted Zion; he hath comforted all her waste places, and hath made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Jehovah; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

⁴ Attend unto me, O my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall go forth from me, and I will establish my justice for a light of the peoples. ⁵ My righteousness is near, my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the peoples; the isles shall wait for me, and on mine arm shall they trust. ⁶ Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment; and they that dwell therein shall die ^[e]in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

⁷ Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye dismayed at their revilings. ⁸ For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool; but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation unto all generations.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Is it not thou that didst cut Rahab in pieces, that didst pierce the monster? ¹⁰ Is it not thou that driedst up the sea, the waters of the great deep; that madest the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over? ¹¹ And the ransomed of Jehovah shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

¹² I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou art afraid of man that shall die, and of the son of man that shall be made as grass; ¹³ and hast forgotten Jehovah thy Maker, that stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and fearest continually all the day because of the fury of the oppressor, ^[f]when he maketh ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor? ^14 [g]The captive exile shall speedily be loosed; and he shall not die and go down into the pit, neither shall his bread fail. ¹⁵ For I am Jehovah thy God, who ^[h]stirreth up the sea, so that the waves thereof roar: Jehovah of hosts is his name. ¹⁶ And I have put my words in thy mouth, and have covered thee in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

¹⁷ Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, that hast drunk at the hand of Jehovah the cup of his wrath; thou hast drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it. ¹⁸ There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand among all the sons that she hath brought up. ¹⁹ These two things are befallen thee, who shall bemoan thee? desolation and destruction, and the famine and the sword; how shall I comfort thee? ²⁰ Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as an antelope in a net; they are full of the wrath of Jehovah, the rebuke of thy God.

²¹ Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine: ²² Thus saith thy Lord Jehovah, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thy hand the cup of staggering, even the bowl of the cup of my wrath; thou shalt no more drink it again: ²³ and I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee, that have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over; and thou hast laid thy back as the ground, and as the street, to them that go over.

52 Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. ² Shake thyself from the dust; arise, sit on thy throne, O Jerusalem: ^[i]loose thyself from the bonds of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

³ For thus saith Jehovah, Ye were sold for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money. ⁴ For thus saith the Lord Jehovah, My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there: and the Assyrian hath oppressed them without cause. ⁵ Now therefore, what do I here, saith Jehovah, seeing that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them do howl, saith Jehovah, and my name continually all the day is blasphemed. ⁶ Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak; behold, ^[j]it is I.

⁷ How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! ⁸ The voice of thy watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, ^[k]when Jehovah returneth to Zion. ⁹ Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for Jehovah hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. ¹⁰ Jehovah hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

¹¹ Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; cleanse yourselves, ye that bear the vessels of Jehovah. ¹² For ye shall not go out in haste, neither shall ye go by flight: for Jehovah will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rearward.

¹³ Behold, my servant shall ^[l]deal wisely, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. ¹⁴ Like as many were astonished at thee (his visage was so marred ^[m]more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men), ¹⁵ so shall he ^[n]sprinkle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths ^[o]at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they ^[p]understand.
