Isaiah 59:4-8

New International Version

⁴No one calls for justice;^(A)
    no one pleads a case with integrity.
They rely^(B) on empty arguments, they utter lies;^(C)
    they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.^(D)
⁵They hatch the eggs of vipers^(E)
    and spin a spider’s web.^(F)
Whoever eats their eggs will die,
    and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.
⁶Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;
    they cannot cover themselves with what they make.^(G)
Their deeds are evil deeds,
    and acts of violence^(H) are in their hands.
⁷Their feet rush into sin;
    they are swift to shed innocent blood.^(I)
They pursue evil schemes;^(J)
    acts of violence mark their ways.^(K)
⁸The way of peace they do not know;^(L)
    there is no justice in their paths.
They have turned them into crooked roads;^(M)
    no one who walks along them will know peace.^(N)

Jeremiah 23:10-14

New International Version

¹⁰The land is full of adulterers;^(A)
    because of the curse^[a]^(B) the land lies parched
    and the pastures^(C) in the wilderness are withered.^(D)
The prophets follow an evil course
    and use their power unjustly.

¹¹“Both prophet and priest are godless;^(E)
    even in my temple^(F) I find their wickedness,”
declares the Lord.
¹²“Therefore their path will become slippery;^(G)
    they will be banished to darkness
    and there they will fall.
I will bring disaster on them
    in the year they are punished,^(H)”
declares the Lord.

¹³“Among the prophets of Samaria
    I saw this repulsive thing:
They prophesied by Baal^(I)
    and led my people Israel astray.^(J)
¹⁴And among the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen something horrible:^(K)
    They commit adultery and live a lie.^(L)
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,^(M)
    so that not one of them turns from their wickedness.^(N)
They are all like Sodom^(O) to me;
    the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”^(P)
