Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I plead.

10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.

13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?

15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.

16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.

17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way?

18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts.

20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.

21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God.

23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets.

27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.

30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

31 O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the Lord.

Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.

Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.

Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?

Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.

The Lord said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.

And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.

10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the Lord.

11 And the Lord said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.

13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the Lord.

14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the Lord, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the Lord: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.

17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

“Therefore I bring charges(A) against you again,”
declares the Lord.
“And I will bring charges against your children’s children.
10 Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus(B) and look,
    send to Kedar[a](C) and observe closely;
see if there has ever been anything like this:
11 Has a nation ever changed its gods?
(Yet they are not gods(D) at all.)
But my people have exchanged their glorious(E) God
    for worthless idols.
12 Be appalled at this, you heavens,
    and shudder with great horror,”
declares the Lord.
13 “My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken(F) me,
    the spring of living water,(G)
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
14 Is Israel a servant, a slave(H) by birth?
Why then has he become plunder?
15 Lions(I) have roared;
    they have growled at him.
They have laid waste(J) his land;
his towns are burned(K) and deserted.(L)
16 Also, the men of Memphis(M) and Tahpanhes(N)
    have cracked your skull.
17 Have you not brought this on yourselves(O)
by forsaking(P) the Lord your God
when he led you in the way?
18 Now why go to Egypt(Q)
to drink water from the Nile[b]?(R)
And why go to Assyria(S)
to drink water from the Euphrates?(T)
19 Your wickedness will punish you;
    your backsliding(U) will rebuke(V) you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter(W) it is for you
when you forsake(X) the Lord your God
and have no awe(Y) of me,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

20 “Long ago you broke off your yoke(Z)
    and tore off your bonds;(AA)
you said, ‘I will not serve you!’(AB)
Indeed, on every high hill(AC)
    and under every spreading tree(AD)
you lay down as a prostitute.(AE)
21 I had planted(AF) you like a choice vine(AG)
    of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
    into a corrupt,(AH) wild vine?
22 Although you wash(AI) yourself with soap(AJ)
and use an abundance of cleansing powder,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.(AK)
23 “How can you say, ‘I am not defiled;(AL)
I have not run after the Baals’?(AM)
See how you behaved in the valley;(AN)
    consider what you have done.
You are a swift she-camel
    running(AO) here and there,
24 a wild donkey(AP) accustomed to the desert,(AQ)
sniffing the wind in her craving—
in her heat who can restrain her?
Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves;
at mating time they will find her.
25 Do not run until your feet are bare
    and your throat is dry.
But you said, ‘It’s no use!(AR)
    I love foreign gods,(AS)
and I must go after them.’(AT)

26 “As a thief is disgraced(AU) when he is caught,
so the people of Israel are disgraced—
they, their kings and their officials,
    their priests(AV) and their prophets.(AW)
27 They say to wood,(AX) ‘You are my father,’
and to stone,(AY) ‘You gave me birth.’
They have turned their backs(AZ) to me
    and not their faces;(BA)
yet when they are in trouble,(BB) they say,
    ‘Come and save(BC) us!’
28 Where then are the gods(BD) you made for yourselves?
Let them come if they can save you
    when you are in trouble!(BE)
For you, Judah, have as many gods
    as you have towns.(BF)

29 “Why do you bring charges against me?
You have all(BG) rebelled against me,”
declares the Lord.
30 “In vain I punished your people;
they did not respond to correction.(BH)
Your sword has devoured your prophets(BI)
    like a ravenous lion.

31 “You of this generation, consider the word of the Lord:

“Have I been a desert to Israel
or a land of great darkness?(BJ)
Why do my people say, ‘We are free to roam;
we will come to you no more’?(BK)
32 Does a young woman forget her jewelry,
    a bride her wedding ornaments?
Yet my people have forgotten(BL) me,
    days without number.
33 How skilled you are at pursuing(BM) love!
Even the worst of women can learn from your ways.
34 On your clothes is found
the lifeblood(BN) of the innocent poor,
though you did not catch them breaking in.(BO)
Yet in spite of all this
35     you say, ‘I am innocent;(BP)
he is not angry with me.’
But I will pass judgment(BQ) on you
because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’(BR)
36 Why do you go about so much,
    changing(BS) your ways?
You will be disappointed by Egypt(BT)
    as you were by Assyria.
37 You will also leave that place
with your hands on your head,(BU)
for the Lord has rejected those you trust;
you will not be helped(BV) by them.

“If a man divorces(BW) his wife
and she leaves him and marries another man,
should he return to her again?
Would not the land be completely defiled?(BX)
But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers(BY)
would you now return to me?”(BZ)
declares the Lord.
“Look up to the barren heights(CA) and see.
Is there any place where you have not been ravished?
By the roadside(CB) you sat waiting for lovers,
sat like a nomad in the desert.
You have defiled the land(CC)
    with your prostitution(CD) and wickedness.
Therefore the showers have been withheld,(CE)
and no spring rains(CF) have fallen.
Yet you have the brazen(CG) look of a prostitute;
you refuse to blush with shame.(CH)
Have you not just called to me:
‘My Father,(CI) my friend from my youth,(CJ)
will you always be angry?(CK)
    Will your wrath continue forever?’
This is how you talk,
but you do all the evil you can.”

Unfaithful Israel

During the reign of King Josiah,(CL) the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what faithless(CM) Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree(CN) and has committed adultery(CO) there. I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister(CP) Judah saw it.(CQ) I gave faithless Israel(CR) her certificate of divorce(CS) and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear;(CT) she also went out and committed adultery. Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land(CU) and committed adultery(CV) with stone(CW) and wood.(CX) 10 In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return(CY) to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,(CZ)” declares the Lord.(DA)

11 The Lord said to me, “Faithless Israel is more righteous(DB) than unfaithful(DC) Judah.(DD) 12 Go, proclaim this message toward the north:(DE)

“‘Return,(DF) faithless(DG) Israel,’ declares the Lord,
‘I will frown on you no longer,
for I am faithful,’(DH) declares the Lord,
‘I will not be angry(DI) forever.
13 Only acknowledge(DJ) your guilt—
you have rebelled against the Lord your God,
you have scattered your favors to foreign gods(DK)
    under every spreading tree,(DL)
    and have not obeyed(DM) me,’”
declares the Lord.

14 “Return,(DN) faithless people,” declares the Lord, “for I am your husband.(DO) I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion. 15 Then I will give you shepherds(DP) after my own heart,(DQ) who will lead you with knowledge and understanding. 16 In those days, when your numbers have increased greatly in the land,” declares the Lord, “people will no longer say, ‘The ark(DR) of the covenant of the Lord.’ It will never enter their minds or be remembered;(DS) it will not be missed, nor will another one be made. 17 At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne(DT) of the Lord, and all nations(DU) will gather in Jerusalem to honor(DV) the name of the Lord. No longer will they follow the stubbornness of their evil hearts.(DW) 18 In those days the people of Judah will join the people of Israel,(DX) and together(DY) they will come from a northern(DZ) land to the land(EA) I gave your ancestors as an inheritance.
