A final word for Baruch
45 In the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son, Baruch was writing in a scroll the words that Jeremiah was dictating to him. Jeremiah the prophet told Baruch, Neriah’s son: 2 This is what the Lord the God of Israel proclaims about you, Baruch: 3 You have said, “I can’t take it anymore! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain. I’m worn out from groaning and can find no rest.” 4 This is what you should say to him: “The Lord proclaims: I’m breaking down everything I have built up. I’m digging up that which I have planted—the entire land. 5 You seek great things for yourself, but don’t bother. I’m bringing disaster on all humanity, declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.”
ORACLES CONCERNING THE NATIONS
46 This is what the Lord told the prophet Jeremiah concerning the nations.
Prophecy against Egypt
2 About Egypt! A message for the army of Pharaoh Neco, Egypt’s king, which was defeated by Babylon’s Nebuchadnezzar at Carchemish near the Euphrates River in the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son:
3 Grab your shields
and prepare for war!
4 Saddle the horses;
mount the stallions!
Take your positions
with helmets on!
Polish your spears;
put on your armor!
5 Why do I see them terrified,
retreating in haste?
Their soldiers are crushed,
running for cover,
and they don’t turn back.
Panic lurks at every turn,
declares the Lord.
6 The swift can’t flee;
the mighty can’t escape.
Up north by the Euphrates River,
they stagger and fall.
7 Who is this that rises like the Nile,
whose banks overflow?[a]
8 It’s Egypt that rises like the Nile,
whose banks overflow,[b]
who declares, “I will arise
and cover the earth
and destroy cities and inhabitants.”
9 Charge, you horses;
advance, you chariots!
Attack, you soldiers
with your shield in hand,
you people of Cush and Put[c]
with your bow drawn,
you archers from Lud.
10 But that day belongs to the
Lord God of heavenly forces;
it’s a day of reckoning,
settling scores with enemies.
The sword will devour
until it has had its fill of blood.
The Lord God of heavenly forces
is preparing a sacrifice in the north
by the Euphrates River.
11 Go up to Gilead and seek balm,
virgin Daughter Egypt.
You search out remedies in vain,
for your disease is incurable.
12 Nations hear of your shame;
the earth is filled with your sobs.
Soldier stumbles over soldier;
together they go down.
13 This is the word that the Lord spoke to the prophet Jeremiah about the military offensive of Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar against the land of Egypt:
14 Tell Egypt, warn Migdol,
alert Memphis and Tahpanhes!
Say: “Brace yourselves for what’s coming.
War is breaking out from every side!”
15 Why have your mighty fallen?
Why haven’t they stood their ground?
Because the Lord has struck them down.
16 He’s tripped them up;
they fall over each other and say,
“Let’s get out of here
and go home to our people,
where we were born,
far away from the oppressor’s sword.”[d]
17 There they call Pharaoh, Egypt’s king,
Loudmouth—Nothing But Hot Air!
18 As I live, declares the king,
whose name is the Lord of heavenly forces,
one is coming
just as surely as Tabor is in the mountains
and Carmel is by the sea.[e]
19 Get what you need for deportation,
you inhabitants of Egypt.[f]
Memphis will be reduced to a wasteland,
a ruin with no one left.
20 Egypt is a beautiful, yes, beautiful heifer,
but a horsefly from the north
is coming to bite her.[g]
21 Even her mercenaries
are like well-fed calves;
they too will retreat and run for cover;
they won’t survive.
The day of disaster has come to haunt them,
the time of their punishment.
22 Like the sound of a snake hissing
as it slithers away
is Egypt[h] as armies approach in force;
they come against her with axes,
like woodcutters.
23 They destroy her dense forest,
though it is vast,
because they outnumber locusts
and can’t be counted,
declares the Lord.
24 Daughter Egypt will be humiliated,
handed over to people from the north.
25 This is what the Lord of heavenly forces, the God of Israel, proclaims: I’m going to punish Amon of Thebes, Egypt and its gods and kings, as well as Pharaoh and all who rely on him. 26 I will hand them over to those who seek to kill them, namely Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar and his servants. But afterward Egypt will dwell like it did a long time ago, declares the Lord.
27 But don’t be afraid, my servant Judah;
don’t lose heart, Israel.
I will deliver you from a faraway place
and your children from the land of their exile.
My people Jacob will again be safe and sound,
with no one harassing them.
28 So don’t be afraid, my servant Jacob,
declares the Lord.
I’m with you;
I will put an end to all the nations
where I have scattered you.
But I won’t put an end to you.
I won’t let you avoid punishment;
I will discipline you as you deserve.
Prophecy against Philistia
47 The Lord’s word to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines before Pharaoh conquered Gaza.
2 The Lord proclaims:
Waters are rising from the north
and turning into a raging flood.
They will engulf the land and everything in it,
the towns and those living in them.
The people cry out;
all who live there scream.
3 At the pounding of the stallions’ hooves,
at the deafening roar of the chariots’ wheels,
parents abandon children,
so paralyzed are they with fear.
4 Because the time is coming
for the Philistines’ destruction,
for cutting off from Tyre and Sidon
anyone who might try to save Gaza,[i]
because the Lord will destroy the Philistines,
the few left from the island of Caphtor.
5 Mourning[j] will come upon Gaza;
silence will cover Ashkelon,
the few left in their valley.
How long will you gash yourselves in grief?[k]
6 You sword of the Lord,
how long until you are silent?
Return to your sheath;
rest and be still!
7 How can you be silent
when the Lord has directed you[l]
to attack Ashkelon and the coast line?
Prophecy against Moab
48 Concerning Moab:
The Lord of heavenly forces,
the God of Israel, proclaims:
How awful for Nebo;
it lies in ruins.
Kirathaim is captured and shamed;
the fortress is disgraced,
reduced to rubble.
2 No one sings Moab’s praise any longer!
In Heshbon they are hatching
a plot against her:
“Come, let’s bring down the nation!”
You too, Madmen, will be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
3 Listen to the cries for help from Horonaim:
“Destruction and massive devastation!”
4 Moab is shattered;
its young cry for help.
5 On the way up to Luhith,
there is uncontrollable weeping.
On the way down to Horonaim,
they hear sobs of anguish.
6 Run for your lives!
Be like Aroer[m] in the desert.
7 Because you have relied
on your own strength and treasures,
you also will be captured.
Chemosh will go into exile,
together with his priests and officials.
8 The destroyer will sweep through every town;
no town will escape.
The valleys will be ravaged;
the plateaus will be destroyed,
because the Lord has declared it so.
9 Give wings to Moab,
and it would fly away[n]
because its towns lie in ruins,
with no one left in them.
10 Cursed is the one who is halfhearted
in doing the Lord’s work.
Cursed is the one who restrains
the sword from bloodshed.
11 From early on Moab has been at ease,
like wine[o] left to settle on its sediment.
It hasn’t been poured into jars;
nor has Moab been taken into exile.
Therefore, its taste is still pleasant,
and its aroma is the same.
12 But the time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will send to him someone to spill it—to pour out his wine and to smash his jars. 13 And Moab will be put to shame on account of Chemosh, just as the people of Israel were put to shame on account of Bethel, in which they trusted.[p]
14 How can you claim,
“We’re soldiers; we’re war heroes”?
15 Moab is doomed;
its towns will surrender;[q]
its elite forces will go down in defeat,
declares the king whose name is the Lord of heavenly forces.
16 Moab’s destruction is near;
its downfall approaches rapidly.
17 Grieve for this nation,
you neighbors of Moab,
all you who know his name.
Proclaim how its mighty scepter
and magnificent staff are shattered!
18 Come down from your lofty place
and sit in the dust,[r]
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon;[s]
because Moab’s destroyer
has arrived to level your fortresses.
19 Stand by the roads and watch,
you inhabitants of Aroer.
Ask the men who flee
and the women who run off,
“What’s happened?”
20 Moab is shamed and shocked;
weep and wail!
Tell it by the Arnon River:
Moab’s been destroyed!
21 Judgment has come to the towns of the plateau—
to Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath,
22 to Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, and Beth-meon,
24 to Kerioth and Bozrah,
to all the towns of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn is cut off;
its arm is broken,
declares the Lord.
26 Get Moab drunk,
because it has exalted itself above the Lord.
Moab will collapse in its vomit
and become the butt of every joke.
27 Wasn’t Israel the butt of your jokes?
Didn’t you shake your head
as if they were thieves
caught in the act?
28 Leave your towns, head for the cliffs,
you people of Moab.
Hide like a dove
that nests in the mouth of a cave.
29 We have heard of Moab’s pride:
arrogant, puffed up, exalted,
high and mighty, boastful!
30 I myself know about its arrogance,
declares the Lord,
the idle talk, the empty deeds.
31 But I’ll still wail for Moab;
I’ll cry out for all Moab;
I’ll[t] sob for the people of Kir-heres.
32 I’ll weep for you, vine of Sibmah,
more than I would for Jazer.
Though your branches extended to the sea
and reached the coast of Jazer,
now the destroyer has come
to harvest your grapes and summer fruits.
33 Joy and gladness have been taken
from the orchards and farms of Moab.
I have stopped making wine in the presses.
No one shouts with joy
while treading the grapes.
Though there are shouts,
they are not shouts of joy![u]
34 Screams are heard from Heshbon
to Elealeh and Jahaz;
their cries resound from Zoar
to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah.
Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.
35 I’ll put an end to Moab,
declares the Lord,
for making offerings on the shrines,
and worshipping their gods.
36 Therefore, my heart wails for Moab
like a mournful[v] flute that plays the dirge;
my heart wails for the people of Kir-heres,
like a mournful flute.
Their abundance is now gone.
37 Every head is shaved,
every beard is cut off,
every hand is slashed,
and everyone wears mourning clothes.
38 On every housetop of Moab
and in all its streets,
there’s nothing but mourning.
I have shattered Moab
like a pottery vessel no one wants,
declares the Lord.
39 How it’s shattered! Go wail!
How Moab turns away!
What shame!
Moab has become the butt of every joke,
horrific to all its neighbors.
40 The Lord proclaims:
Look! One who soars like an eagle
and spreads its wings over Moab.
41 The towns will be captured;
the strongholds will be seized.
On that day, the heart of every soldier from Moab
will be like that of a woman in the throes of labor.
42 Moab will be destroyed once and for all
because it has exalted itself above the Lord.
43 Terror, traps, and trackers[w]
are upon you, people of Moab,
declares the Lord.
44 Those who flee from terror
will fall into a pit;
those who escape the pit
will be captured by the trap.
I will bring upon Moab
the year of its punishment,
declares the Lord.
45 In Heshbon tired refugees seek shelter.
But fire is raging in Heshbon,
flames from the house[x] of Sihon.
It has burned up part of Moab,
including the leader of this rebellious nation.[y]
46 How terrible for you, Moab;
the people of Chemosh have perished.
Your sons have been carried off;
your daughters have been taken captive.
47 But in the days to come
I’ll bring back Moab from captivity,
declares the Lord.
Such is the judgment on Moab.

45 When Baruch(A) son of Neriah(B) wrote on a scroll(C) the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(D) son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch: 2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: 3 You said, ‘Woe(E) to me! The Lord has added sorrow(F) to my pain;(G) I am worn out with groaning(H) and find no rest.’(I) 4 But the Lord has told me to say to you, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot(J) what I have planted,(K) throughout the earth.(L) 5 Should you then seek great(M) things for yourself? Do not seek them.(N) For I will bring disaster(O) on all people,(P) declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape(Q) with your life.’”(R)
A Message About Egypt
46 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations:(S)
2 Concerning Egypt:(T)
This is the message against the army of Pharaoh Necho(U) king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish(V) on the Euphrates(W) River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(X) son of Josiah king of Judah:
3 “Prepare your shields,(Y) both large and small,
and march out for battle!
4 Harness the horses,
mount the steeds!
Take your positions
with helmets on!
Polish(Z) your spears,
put on your armor!(AA)
5 What do I see?
They are terrified,
they are retreating,
their warriors are defeated.
They flee(AB) in haste
without looking back,
and there is terror(AC) on every side,”
declares the Lord.
6 “The swift cannot flee(AD)
nor the strong escape.
In the north by the River Euphrates(AE)
they stumble and fall.(AF)
7 “Who is this that rises like the Nile,
like rivers of surging waters?(AG)
8 Egypt rises like the Nile,(AH)
like rivers of surging waters.
She says, ‘I will rise and cover the earth;
I will destroy cities and their people.’(AI)
9 Charge, you horses!
Drive furiously, you charioteers!(AJ)
March on, you warriors—men of Cush[a](AK) and Put who carry shields,
men of Lydia(AL) who draw the bow.
10 But that day(AM) belongs to the Lord, the Lord Almighty—
a day of vengeance(AN), for vengeance on his foes.
The sword will devour(AO) till it is satisfied,
till it has quenched its thirst with blood.(AP)
For the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will offer sacrifice(AQ)
in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.(AR)
11 “Go up to Gilead and get balm,(AS)
Virgin(AT) Daughter Egypt.
But you try many medicines in vain;
there is no healing(AU) for you.
12 The nations will hear of your shame;
your cries will fill the earth.
One warrior will stumble over another;
both will fall(AV) down together.”
13 This is the message the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(AW) to attack Egypt:(AX)
14 “Announce this in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol;
proclaim it also in Memphis(AY) and Tahpanhes:(AZ)
‘Take your positions and get ready,
for the sword devours(BA) those around you.’
15 Why will your warriors be laid low?
They cannot stand, for the Lord will push them down.(BB)
16 They will stumble(BC) repeatedly;
they will fall(BD) over each other.
They will say, ‘Get up, let us go back
to our own people(BE) and our native lands,
away from the sword of the oppressor.’(BF)
17 There they will exclaim,
‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is only a loud noise;(BG)
he has missed his opportunity.(BH)’
18 “As surely as I live,” declares the King,(BI)
whose name is the Lord Almighty,
“one will come who is like Tabor(BJ) among the mountains,
like Carmel(BK) by the sea.
19 Pack your belongings for exile,(BL)
you who live in Egypt,
for Memphis(BM) will be laid waste(BN)
and lie in ruins without inhabitant.
20 “Egypt is a beautiful heifer,
but a gadfly is coming
against her from the north.(BO)
21 The mercenaries(BP) in her ranks
are like fattened calves.(BQ)
They too will turn and flee(BR) together,
they will not stand their ground,
for the day(BS) of disaster is coming upon them,
the time(BT) for them to be punished.
22 Egypt will hiss like a fleeing serpent
as the enemy advances in force;
they will come against her with axes,
like men who cut down trees.(BU)
23 They will chop down her forest,”
declares the Lord,
“dense though it be.
They are more numerous than locusts,(BV)
they cannot be counted.
24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,
given into the hands of the people of the north.(BW)”
25 The Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to bring punishment on Amon god of Thebes,(BX) on Pharaoh,(BY) on Egypt and her gods(BZ) and her kings, and on those who rely(CA) on Pharaoh. 26 I will give them into the hands(CB) of those who want to kill them—Nebuchadnezzar king(CC) of Babylon and his officers. Later, however, Egypt will be inhabited(CD) as in times past,” declares the Lord.
27 “Do not be afraid,(CE) Jacob(CF) my servant;(CG)
do not be dismayed, Israel.
I will surely save you out of a distant place,
your descendants from the land of their exile.(CH)
Jacob will again have peace and security,
and no one will make him afraid.
28 Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant,
for I am with you,”(CI) declares the Lord.
“Though I completely destroy(CJ) all the nations
among which I scatter you,
I will not completely destroy you.
I will discipline you but only in due measure;
I will not let you go entirely unpunished.”
A Message About the Philistines
47 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines(CK) before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:(CL)
2 This is what the Lord says:
“See how the waters are rising in the north;(CM)
they will become an overflowing torrent.
They will overflow the land and everything in it,
the towns and those who live in them.
The people will cry out;
all who dwell in the land will wail(CN)
3 at the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds,
at the noise of enemy chariots(CO)
and the rumble of their wheels.
Parents will not turn to help their children;
their hands will hang limp.(CP)
4 For the day has come
to destroy all the Philistines
and to remove all survivors
who could help Tyre(CQ) and Sidon.(CR)
The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,(CS)
the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.[b](CT)
5 Gaza will shave(CU) her head in mourning;
Ashkelon(CV) will be silenced.
You remnant on the plain,
how long will you cut(CW) yourselves?
6 “‘Alas, sword(CX) of the Lord,
how long till you rest?
Return to your sheath;
cease and be still.’(CY)
7 But how can it rest
when the Lord has commanded it,
when he has ordered it
to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”(CZ)
A Message About Moab(DA)
48 Concerning Moab:(DB)
This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“Woe to Nebo,(DC) for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim(DD) will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold[c] will be disgraced and shattered.
2 Moab will be praised(DE) no more;
in Heshbon[d](DF) people will plot her downfall:
‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(DG)
You, the people of Madmen,[e] will also be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
3 Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(DH)
cries of great havoc and destruction.
4 Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.[f]
5 They go up the hill to Luhith,(DI)
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(DJ)
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
6 Flee!(DK) Run for your lives;
become like a bush[g] in the desert.(DL)
7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(DM)
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(DN) will go into exile,(DO)
together with his priests and officials.(DP)
8 The destroyer(DQ) will come against every town,
and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
and the plateau(DR) destroyed,
because the Lord has spoken.
9 Put salt(DS) on Moab,
for she will be laid waste[h];(DT)
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.
10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(DU) from bloodshed!(DV)
11 “Moab has been at rest(DW) from youth,
like wine left on its dregs,(DX)
not poured from one jar to another—
she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(DY) of Chemosh,(DZ)
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.(EA)
14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(EB)
men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men(EC) will go down in the slaughter,(ED)”
declares the King,(EE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(EF)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(EG)
her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;(EH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(EI)
how broken the glorious staff!’
18 “Come down from your glory
and sit on the parched ground,(EJ)
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(EK)
for the one who destroys Moab
will come up against you
and ruin your fortified cities.(EL)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.(EM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail(EN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(EO)
that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(EP)—
to Holon,(EQ) Jahzah(ER) and Mephaath,(ES)
22 to Dibon,(ET) Nebo(EU) and Beth Diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim,(EV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(EW)
24 to Kerioth(EX) and Bozrah(EY)—
to all the towns(EZ) of Moab, far and near.

26 “Make her drunk,(FC)
for she has defied(FD) the Lord.

27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(FG)
Was she caught among thieves,(FH)
that you shake your head(FI) in scorn(FJ)
whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(FK) that makes its nest
at the mouth of a cave.(FL)
29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(FM)—
how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
and the haughtiness(FN) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
“and her boasts(FO) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(FP) over Moab,
for all Moab I cry out,
I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(FQ)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(FR) weeps,
you vines of Sibmah.(FS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[j];
they reached as far as[k] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(FT) from the presses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy.(FU)
Although there are shouts,
they are not shouts of joy.
34 “The sound of their cry rises
from Heshbon(FV) to Elealeh(FW) and Jahaz,(FX)
from Zoar(FY) as far as Horonaim(FZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(GA)
35 In Moab I will put an end
to those who make offerings on the high places(GB)
and burn incense(GC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(GD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(GE)
The wealth they acquired(GF) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(GG)
and every beard(GH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(GI)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
and in the public squares(GJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
for I have broken Moab
like a jar(GK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(GL) she is! How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(GM)
an object of horror to all those around her.”
40 This is what the Lord says:
“Look! An eagle is swooping(GN) down,
spreading its wings(GO) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[l](GP) will be captured
and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(GQ)
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(GR)
42 Moab will be destroyed(GS) as a nation(GT)
because she defied(GU) the Lord.
43 Terror(GV) and pit and snare(GW) await you,
you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(GX) from the terror
will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
the year(GY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(GZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls(HA) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(HB)
The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
and your daughters into captivity.
47 “Yet I will restore(HC) the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.
Here ends the judgment on Moab.
