41 And it cometh to pass, in the seventh month, come hath Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and of the chiefs of the king, and ten men with him, unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and they eat there bread together in Mizpah.

And Ishmael son of Nethaniah riseth, and the ten men who have been with him, and they smite Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with the sword, and he putteth him to death whom the king of Babylon hath appointed over the land.

And all the Jews who have been with him, with Gedaliah, in Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who have been found there -- the men of war -- hath Ishmael smitten.

And it cometh to pass, on the second day of the putting of Gedaliah to death, (and no one hath known,)

that men come in from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria -- eighty men -- with shaven beards, and rent garments, and cutting themselves, and an offering and frankincense in their hand, to bring in to the house of Jehovah.

And Ishmael son of Nethaniah goeth forth to meet them, from Mizpah, going on and weeping, and it cometh to pass, at meeting them, that he saith unto them, `Come in unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam.'

And it cometh to pass, at their coming in unto the midst of the city, that Ishmael son of Nethaniah doth slaughter them, at the midst of the pit, he and the men who [are] with him.

And ten men have been found among them, and they say unto Ishmael, `Do not put us to death, for we have things hidden in the field -- wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey.' And he forbeareth, and hath not put them to death in the midst of their brethren.

And the pit whither Ishmael hath cast all the carcases of the men whom he hath smitten along with Gedaliah, is that which the king Asa made because of Baasha king of Israel -- it hath Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled with the pierced.

10 And Ishmael taketh captive all the remnant of the people who [are] in Mizpah, the daughters of the king, and all the people who are left in Mizpah, whom Nebuzar-Adan, chief of the executioners, hath committed [to] Gedaliah son of Ahikam, and Ishmael son of Nethaniah taketh them captive, and goeth to pass over unto the sons of Ammon.

11 And hear doth Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces that [are] with him, of all the evil that Ishmael son of Nethaniah hath done,

12 and they take all the men, and go to fight with Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and they find him at the great waters that [are] in Gibeon.

13 And it cometh to pass, when all the people who [are] with Ishmael see Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces who [are] with him, that they rejoice.

14 And all the people whom Ishmael hath taken captive from Mizpah turn round, yea, they turn back, and go unto Johanan son of Kareah.

15 And Ishmael son of Nethaniah hath escaped, with eight men, from the presence of Johanan, and he goeth unto the sons of Ammon.

16 And Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces who [are] with him, take all the remnant of the people whom he hath brought back from Ishmael son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah -- after he had smitten Gedaliah son of Ahikam -- mighty ones, men of war, and women, and infants, and eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon,

17 and they go and abide in the habitations of Chimham, that [are] near Beth-Lehem, to go to enter Egypt,

18 from the presence of the Chaldeans, for they have been afraid of them, for Ishmael son of Nethaniah had smitten Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

42 And they come nigh -- all the heads of the forces, and Johanan son of Kareah, and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest --

and they say unto Jeremiah the prophet, `Let, we pray thee, our supplication fall before thee, and pray for us unto Jehovah thy God, for all this remnant; for we have been left a few out of many, as thine eyes do see us;

and Jehovah thy God doth declare to us the way in which we walk, and the thing that we do.'

And Jeremiah the prophet saith unto them, `I have heard: lo, I am praying unto Jehovah your God according to your words, and it hath come to pass, the whole word that Jehovah answereth you, I declare to you -- I do not withhold from you a word.'

And they have said to Jeremiah, `Jehovah is against us for a witness true and faithful, if -- according to all the word with which Jehovah thy God doth send thee unto us -- we do not so.

Whether good or evil, to the voice of Jehovah our God, to whom we are sending thee, we do hearken; because it is good for us when we hearken to the voice of Jehovah our God.'

And it cometh to pass, at the end of ten days, that there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah,

and he calleth unto Johanan son of Kareah, and unto all the heads of the forces that [are] with him, and to all the people, from the least even unto the greatest,

and he saith unto them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me, to cause your supplication to fall before Him:

10 `If ye do certainly dwell in this land, then I have builded you up, and I throw not down; and I have planted you, and I pluck not up; for I have repented concerning the evil that I have done to you.

11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, whom ye are afraid of; be not afraid of him -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- for with you [am] I, to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.

12 And I give to you mercies, and he hath pitied you, and caused you to turn back unto your own ground.

13 `And if ye are saying, We do not dwell in this land -- not to hearken to the voice of Jehovah your God,

14 saying, No; but the land of Egypt we enter, that we see no war, and the sound of a trumpet do not hear, and for bread be not hungry; and there do we dwell.

15 And now, therefore, hear ye a word of Jehovah, O remnant of Judah: Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: If ye really set your faces to enter Egypt, and have gone in to sojourn there,

16 then it hath come to pass, the sword that ye are afraid of, doth there overtake you, in the land of Egypt; and the hunger, because of which ye are sorrowful, doth there cleave after you in Egypt, and there ye die.

17 `Thus are all the men who have set their faces to enter Egypt to sojourn there; they die -- by sword, by hunger, and by pestilence, and there is not to them a remnant and an escaped one, because of the evil that I am bringing in upon them;

18 for thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: As poured out hath been Mine anger and My fury on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so poured out is My fury upon you in your entering Egypt, and ye have been for an execration, and for an astonishment, and for a reviling, and for a reproach, and ye do not see any more this place.

19 `Jehovah hath spoken against you, O remnant of Judah, do not enter Egypt: know certainly that I have testified against you to-day;

20 for ye have shewed yourselves perverse in your souls, for ye sent me unto Jehovah your God, saying, Pray for us unto Jehovah our God, and according to all that Jehovah our God saith, so declare to us, and we have done [it];

21 and I declare to you to-day, and ye have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah your God, and to anything with which He hath sent me unto you.

22 And now, know ye certainly that by sword, by famine, and by pestilence ye die, in the place that ye have desired to go in to sojourn there.'

43 And it cometh to pass, when Jeremiah doth finish to speak unto all the people all the words of Jehovah their God, with which Jehovah their God hath sent him unto them -- all these words --

that Azariah son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan son of Kareah, and all the proud men, speak unto Jeremiah, saying, `Falsehood thou art speaking; Jehovah our God hath not sent thee to say, Do not enter Egypt to sojourn there;

for Baruch son of Neriah is moving thee against us, in order to give us up into the hand of the Chaldeans, to put us to death, and to remove us to Babylon.'

And Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces, and all the people, have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, to dwell in the land of Judah;

and Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces, take all the remnant of Judah who have turned from all the nations whither they were driven to sojourn in the land of Judah,

the men, and the women, and the infant, and the daughters of the king, and every person that Nebuzar-Adan, chief of the executioners, had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch son of Neriah,

and they enter the land of Egypt, for they have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and they enter unto Tahpanhes.

And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

`Take in thy hand great stones, and thou hast hidden them, in the clay, in the brick-kiln, that [is] at the opening of the house of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes, before the eyes of the men of Judah,

10 and thou hast said unto them: Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: `Lo, I am sending, and I have taken Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and I have set his throne above these stones that I have hid, and he hath stretched out his pavilion over them,

11 and he hath come, and smitten the land of Egypt -- those who [are] for death to death, and those who [are] for captivity to captivity, and those who [are] for the sword to the sword.

12 And I have kindled a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt, and it hath burned them, and he hath taken them captive, and covered himself with the land of Egypt, as cover himself doth the shepherd with his garment, and he hath gone forth thence in peace;

13 and he hath broken the standing pillars of the house of the sun, that [is] in the land of Egypt, and the houses of the gods of Egypt he doth burn with fire.'

44 The word that hath been unto Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who are dwelling in the land of Egypt -- who are dwelling in Migdol, and in Tahpanhes, and in Noph, and in the land of Pathros -- saying,

`Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Ye -- ye have seen all the evil that I have brought in on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah, and lo, they [are] a waste this day, and there is none dwelling in them,

because of their wickedness that they have done, by provoking Me to anger, by going to make perfume, by serving other gods, that they knew not, they, ye, and your fathers.

`And I send unto you all my servants, the prophets, rising early and sending, saying: I pray you, do not this abomination that I have hated --

and they have not hearkened nor inclined their ear, to turn back from their wickedness, not to make perfume to other gods,

and poured out is My fury, and Mine anger, and it burneth in cities of Judah, and in streets of Jerusalem, and they are for a waste, for a desolation, as [at] this day.

`And, now, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Why are ye doing great evil unto your own souls, to cut off to you man and woman, infant and suckling, from the midst of Judah, so as not to leave to you a remnant:

by provoking Me to anger by the works of your hands, by making perfume to other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye are going in to sojourn, so as to cut yourselves off, and so as to your being for a reviling and for a reproach among all nations of the earth?

`Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, that they have done in the land of Judah, and in streets of Jerusalem?

10 They have not been humbled unto this day, nor have they been afraid, nor have they walked in My law, and in My statutes, that I have set before you and before your fathers.

11 `Therefore, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Lo, I am setting my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Judah,

12 and I have taken the remnant of Judah, who have set their faces to enter the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they have all been consumed in the land of Egypt; they fall by sword, by famine they are consumed, from the least even unto the greatest, by sword and by famine they die, and they have been for an execration, for an astonishment, and for a reviling, and for a reproach.

13 `And I have seen after those dwelling in the land of Egypt, as I saw after Jerusalem, with sword, with famine, and with pestilence,

14 and there is not an escaped and remaining one of the remnant of Judah, who are entering into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, even to turn back to the land of Judah, whither they are lifting up their soul to return to dwell, for they do not turn back, except those escaping.'

15 And they answer Jeremiah -- all the men who are knowing that their wives are making perfume to other gods, and all the women who are remaining, a great assembly, even all the people who are dwelling in the land of Egypt, in Pathros -- saying:

16 `The word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of Jehovah -- we are not hearkening unto thee;

17 for we certainly do everything that hath gone out of our mouth, to make perfume to the queen of the heavens, and to pour out to her libations, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our heads, in cities of Judah, and in streets of Jerusalem, and -- we are satisfied with bread, and we are well, and evil we have not seen.

18 `And from the time we have ceased to make perfume to the queen of the heavens, and to pour out to her libations, we have lacked all, and by sword and by famine we have been consumed,

19 and when we are making perfume to the queen of the heavens, and pouring out to her libations -- without our husbands have we made for her cakes to idolize her, and to pour out to her libations?'

20 And Jeremiah saith unto all the people, concerning the men and concerning the women, and concerning all the people who are answering him, saying:

21 `The perfume that ye made in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your heads, and the people of the land, hath not Jehovah remembered it? yea, it cometh up on His heart.

22 And Jehovah is not able any more to accept [you], because of the evil of your doings, because of the abominations that ye have done, and your land is for a waste, and for an astonishment, and for a reviling, without inhabitant, as [at] this day.

23 `Because that ye have made perfume, and because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and in His law, and in His statutes, and in His testimonies ye have not walked, therefore hath this evil met you as [at] this day.'

24 And Jeremiah saith unto all the people, and unto all the women, `Hear ye a word of Jehovah, all Judah who [are] in the land of Egypt,

25 Thus spake Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, saying: Ye and your wives both speak with your mouth, and with your hands have fulfilled, saying: We certainly execute our vows that we have vowed, to make perfume to the queen of the heavens, and to pour out to her libations, ye do certainly establish your vows, and certainly execute your vows.

26 `Therefore, hear ye a word of Jehovah, all Judah who are dwelling in the land of Egypt: Lo, I -- I have sworn by My great name, said Jehovah, My name is no more proclaimed by the mouth of any man of Judah, saying, Live doth the Lord Jehovah -- in all the land of Egypt.

27 Lo, I am watching over them for evil, and not for good, and consumed have been all the men of Judah who [are] in the land of Egypt, by sword and by famine, till their consumption.

28 `And the escaped of the sword turn back out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, few in number, and known have all the remnant of Judah who are coming into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, whose word is established, Mine or theirs.

29 `And this [is] to you the sign -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- that I am seeing after you in this place, so that ye know that My words are certainly established against you for evil;

30 Thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am giving Pharaoh-Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those seeking his life, as I have given Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and who is seeking his life.'

45 The word that Jeremiah the prophet hath spoken unto Baruch son of Neriah, in his writing these words on a book from the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, saying:

`Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, concerning thee, O Baruch:

`Thou hast said, Wo to me, now, for Jehovah hath added sorrow to my pain, I have been wearied with my sighing, and rest I have not found.

Thus dost thou say unto him: Thus said Jehovah: Lo, that which I have built I am throwing down, and that which I have planted I am plucking up, even the whole land itself.

And thou -- thou seekest for thee great things -- do not seek, for lo, I am bringing in evil on all flesh -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and I have given to thee thy life for a spoil, in all places whither thou goest.'

41 In the seventh month Ishmael(A) son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king’s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there, Ishmael(B) son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword,(C) killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed(D) as governor over the land.(E) Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian[a] soldiers who were there.

The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it, eighty men who had shaved off their beards,(F) torn their clothes(G) and cut(H) themselves came from Shechem,(I) Shiloh(J) and Samaria,(K) bringing grain offerings and incense(L) with them to the house of the Lord.(M) Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping(N) as he went. When he met them, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”(O) When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.(P) But ten of them said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.”(Q) So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa(R) had made as part of his defense(S) against Baasha(T) king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.

10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people(U) who were in Mizpah—the king’s daughters(V) along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.(W)

11 When Johanan(X) son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12 they took all their men and went to fight(Y) Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool(Z) in Gibeon. 13 When all the people(AA) Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah(AB) turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped(AC) from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.

Flight to Egypt

16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(AD) who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived,(AE) whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham(AF) near Bethlehem(AG) on their way to Egypt(AH) 18 to escape the Babylonians.[b] They were afraid(AI) of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah(AJ) son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

42 Then all the army officers, including Johanan(AK) son of Kareah and Jezaniah[c] son of Hoshaiah,(AL) and all the people from the least to the greatest(AM) approached Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray(AN) to the Lord your God for this entire remnant.(AO) For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few(AP) are left. Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”(AQ)

“I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray(AR) to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell(AS) you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.”(AT)

Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true(AU) and faithful(AV) witness(AW) against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well(AX) with us, for we will obey(AY) the Lord our God.”

Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(AZ) who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest.(BA) He said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition,(BB) says:(BC) 10 ‘If you stay in this land,(BD) I will build(BE) you up and not tear you down; I will plant(BF) you and not uproot you,(BG) for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you.(BH) 11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon,(BI) whom you now fear.(BJ) Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save(BK) you and deliver you from his hands.(BL) 12 I will show you compassion(BM) so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.’(BN)

13 “However, if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and so disobey(BO) the Lord your God, 14 and if you say, ‘No, we will go and live in Egypt,(BP) where we will not see war or hear the trumpet(BQ) or be hungry for bread,’(BR) 15 then hear the word of the Lord,(BS) you remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, 16 then the sword(BT) you fear(BU) will overtake you there, and the famine(BV) you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die.(BW) 17 Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague;(BX) not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.’ 18 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘As my anger and wrath(BY) have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem,(BZ) so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse[d](CA) and an object of horror,(CB) a curse[e] and an object of reproach;(CC) you will never see this place again.’(CD)

19 “Remnant(CE) of Judah, the Lord has told you, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’(CF) Be sure of this: I warn you today 20 that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said, ‘Pray to the Lord our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.’(CG) 21 I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to tell you.(CH) 22 So now, be sure of this: You will die by the sword, famine(CI) and plague(CJ) in the place where you want to go to settle.”(CK)

43 When Jeremiah had finished telling the people all the words of the Lord their God—everything the Lord had sent him to tell them(CL) Azariah son of Hoshaiah(CM) and Johanan(CN) son of Kareah and all the arrogant(CO) men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying!(CP) The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’(CQ) But Baruch(CR) son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Babylonians,[f] so they may kill us or carry us into exile to Babylon.”(CS)

So Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and all the people(CT) disobeyed the Lord’s command(CU) to stay in the land of Judah.(CV) Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led away all the remnant of Judah who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.(CW) They also led away all those whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan—the men, the women,(CX) the children and the king’s daughters. And they took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch(CY) son of Neriah along with them. So they entered Egypt(CZ) in disobedience to the Lord and went as far as Tahpanhes.(DA)

In Tahpanhes(DB) the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “While the Jews are watching, take some large stones(DC) with you and bury them in clay in the brick(DD) pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace(DE) in Tahpanhes. 10 Then say to them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will send for my servant(DF) Nebuchadnezzar(DG) king of Babylon, and I will set his throne(DH) over these stones I have buried here; he will spread his royal canopy(DI) above them. 11 He will come and attack Egypt,(DJ) bringing death(DK) to those destined(DL) for death, captivity to those destined for captivity,(DM) and the sword to those destined for the sword.(DN) 12 He will set fire(DO) to the temples(DP) of the gods(DQ) of Egypt; he will burn their temples and take their gods captive.(DR) As a shepherd picks(DS) his garment clean of lice, so he will pick Egypt clean and depart. 13 There in the temple of the sun[g](DT) in Egypt he will demolish the sacred pillars(DU) and will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”

Disaster Because of Idolatry

44 This word came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in Lower Egypt(DV)—in Migdol,(DW) Tahpanhes(DX) and Memphis(DY)—and in Upper Egypt:(DZ) “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster(EA) I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah.(EB) Today they lie deserted and in ruins(EC) because of the evil(ED) they have done. They aroused my anger(EE) by burning incense(EF) to and worshiping other gods(EG) that neither they nor you nor your ancestors(EH) ever knew. Again and again(EI) I sent my servants the prophets,(EJ) who said, ‘Do not do this detestable(EK) thing that I hate!’ But they did not listen or pay attention;(EL) they did not turn from their wickedness(EM) or stop burning incense(EN) to other gods.(EO) Therefore, my fierce anger was poured out;(EP) it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins(EQ) they are today.

“Now this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster(ER) on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women,(ES) the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant?(ET) Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made,(EU) burning incense(EV) to other gods in Egypt,(EW) where you have come to live?(EX) You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse[h] and an object of reproach(EY) among all the nations on earth. Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors(EZ) and by the kings(FA) and queens(FB) of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives(FC) in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?(FD) 10 To this day they have not humbled(FE) themselves or shown reverence,(FF) nor have they followed my law(FG) and the decrees(FH) I set before you and your ancestors.(FI)

11 “Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty,(FJ) the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster(FK) on you and to destroy all Judah. 12 I will take away the remnant(FL) of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest,(FM) they will die by sword or famine.(FN) They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.(FO) 13 I will punish(FP) those who live in Egypt with the sword,(FQ) famine and plague,(FR) as I punished Jerusalem. 14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”(FS)

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives(FT) were burning incense(FU) to other gods, along with all the women(FV) who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,(FW) said to Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen(FX) to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!(FY) 17 We will certainly do everything we said we would:(FZ) We will burn incense(GA) to the Queen of Heaven(GB) and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials(GC) did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.(GD) At that time we had plenty of food(GE) and were well off and suffered no harm.(GF) 18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings(GG) to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.(GH)

19 The women added, “When we burned incense(GI) to the Queen of Heaven(GJ) and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands(GK) know that we were making cakes(GL) impressed with her image(GM) and pouring out drink offerings to her?”

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him, 21 “Did not the Lord remember(GN) and call to mind the incense(GO) burned in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem(GP) by you and your ancestors,(GQ) your kings and your officials and the people of the land?(GR) 22 When the Lord could no longer endure(GS) your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse(GT) and a desolate waste(GU) without inhabitants, as it is today.(GV) 23 Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed(GW) his law or his decrees(GX) or his stipulations, this disaster(GY) has come upon you, as you now see.”(GZ)

24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women,(HA) “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah in Egypt.(HB) 25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(HC) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(HD)

“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(HE) 26 But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt:(HF) ‘I swear(HG) by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign(HH) Lord lives.”(HI) 27 For I am watching(HJ) over them for harm,(HK) not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish(HL) by sword and famine(HM) until they are all destroyed.(HN) 28 Those who escape the sword(HO) and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few.(HP) Then the whole remnant(HQ) of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand(HR)—mine or theirs.(HS)

29 “‘This will be the sign(HT) to you that I will punish(HU) you in this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’(HV) 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh(HW) Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah(HX) king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’”(HY)

A Message to Baruch

45 When Baruch(HZ) son of Neriah(IA) wrote on a scroll(IB) the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(IC) son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: You said, ‘Woe(ID) to me! The Lord has added sorrow(IE) to my pain;(IF) I am worn out with groaning(IG) and find no rest.’(IH) But the Lord has told me to say to you, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot(II) what I have planted,(IJ) throughout the earth.(IK) Should you then seek great(IL) things for yourself? Do not seek them.(IM) For I will bring disaster(IN) on all people,(IO) declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape(IP) with your life.’”(IQ)
