21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (A)“Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat meat. 22 (B)For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices. 23 But this is what I commanded them, saying, (C)‘Obey My voice, and (D)I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 (E)Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but (F)followed[a] the counsels and the [b]dictates of their evil hearts, and (G)went[c] backward and not forward. 25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have even (H)sent to you all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them. 26 (I)Yet they did not obey Me or incline their ear, but (J)stiffened their neck. (K)They did worse than their fathers.

27 “Therefore (L)you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not obey you. You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you.

Judgment on Obscene Religion

28 “So you shall say to them, ‘This is a nation that does not obey the voice of the Lord their God (M)nor receive correction. (N)Truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth. 29 (O)Cut off your hair and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on the desolate heights; for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath.’ 30 For the children of Judah have done evil in My sight,” says the Lord. (P)“They have set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to [d]pollute it. 31 And they have built the (Q)high places of Tophet, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to (R)burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, (S)which I did not command, nor did it come into My heart.

32 “Therefore behold, (T)the days are coming,” says the Lord, “when it will no more be called Tophet, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; (U)for they will bury in Tophet until there is no room. 33 The (V)corpses of this people will be food for the birds of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth. And no one will frighten them away. 34 Then I will cause to (W)cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. For (X)the land shall be desolate.

Jeremiah Mourns for His People

“At that time,” says the Lord, “they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of its princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves. They shall spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and which they have served and after which they have walked, which they have sought and (Y)which they have worshiped. They shall not be gathered (Z)nor buried; they shall be like refuse on the face of the earth. Then (AA)death shall be chosen rather than life by all the [e]residue of those who remain of this evil family, who remain in all the places where I have driven them,” says the Lord of hosts.

21 “‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices(A) and eat(B) the meat yourselves! 22 For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands(C) about burnt offerings and sacrifices,(D) 23 but I gave them this command:(E) Obey(F) me, and I will be your God and you will be my people.(G) Walk in obedience to all(H) I command you, that it may go well(I) with you. 24 But they did not listen(J) or pay attention;(K) instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts.(L) They went backward(M) and not forward. 25 From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again(N) I sent you my servants(O) the prophets.(P) 26 But they did not listen to me or pay attention.(Q) They were stiff-necked(R) and did more evil than their ancestors.’(S)

27 “When you tell(T) them all this, they will not listen(U) to you; when you call to them, they will not answer.(V) 28 Therefore say to them, ‘This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction.(W) Truth(X) has perished; it has vanished from their lips.

29 “‘Cut off(Y) your hair and throw it away; take up a lament(Z) on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned(AA) this generation that is under his wrath.

The Valley of Slaughter

30 “‘The people of Judah have done evil(AB) in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols(AC) in the house that bears my Name and have defiled(AD) it. 31 They have built the high places of Topheth(AE) in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(AF) to burn their sons and daughters(AG) in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind.(AH) 32 So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter,(AI) for they will bury(AJ) the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. 33 Then the carcasses(AK) of this people will become food(AL) for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.(AM) 34 I will bring an end to the sounds(AN) of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom(AO) in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem,(AP) for the land will become desolate.(AQ)

“‘At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings and officials of Judah, the bones of the priests and prophets, and the bones(AR) of the people of Jerusalem will be removed(AS) from their graves. They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served(AT) and which they have followed and consulted and worshiped.(AU) They will not be gathered up or buried,(AV) but will be like dung lying on the ground.(AW) Wherever I banish them,(AX) all the survivors of this evil nation will prefer death to life,(AY) declares the Lord Almighty.’

22 Speak, “Thus says the Lord:

‘Even the carcasses of men shall fall (A)as refuse on the open field,
Like cuttings after the harvester,
And no one shall gather them.’ ”

23 Thus says the Lord:

(B)“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
Let not the mighty man glory in his (C)might,
Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

22 Say, “This is what the Lord declares:

“‘Dead bodies will lie
    like dung(A) on the open field,
like cut grain behind the reaper,
    with no one to gather them.’”

23 This is what the Lord says:

“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom(B)
    or the strong boast of their strength(C)
    or the rich boast of their riches,(D)

“Then (A)the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
Will be [a]pleasant to the Lord,
As in the days of old,
As in former years.
And I will come near you for judgment;
I will be a swift witness
Against sorcerers,
Against adulterers,
(B)Against perjurers,
Against those who (C)exploit wage earners and (D)widows and orphans,
And against those who turn away an alien—
Because they do not fear Me,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

“For I am the Lord, (E)I do not change;
(F)Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Yet from the days of (G)your fathers
You have gone away from My ordinances
And have not kept them.
(H)Return to Me, and I will return to you,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
(I)“But you said,
‘In what way shall we return?’

Do Not Rob God

“Will a man rob God?
Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say,
‘In what way have we robbed You?’
(J)In tithes and offerings.
You are cursed with a curse,
For you have robbed Me,
Even this whole nation.
10 (K)Bring all the tithes into the (L)storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the (M)windows of heaven
And (N)pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.

11 “And I will rebuke (O)the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the Lord of hosts;
12 “And all nations will call you blessed,
For you will be (P)a delightful land,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

The People Complain Harshly

13 “Your(Q) words have been [b]harsh against Me,”
Says the Lord,
“Yet you say,
‘What have we spoken against You?’
14 (R)You have said,
‘It is useless to serve God;
What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance,
And that we have walked as mourners
Before the Lord of hosts?
15 So now (S)we call the proud blessed,
For those who do wickedness are [c]raised up;
They even (T)tempt God and go free.’ ”

A Book of Remembrance

16 Then those (U)who feared the Lord (V)spoke to one another,
And the Lord listened and heard them;
So (W)a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the Lord
And who [d]meditate on His name.

17 “They(X) shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts,
“On the day that I make them My (Y)jewels.[e]
And (Z)I will spare them
As a man spares his own son who serves him.”
18 (AA)Then you shall again discern
Between the righteous and the wicked,
Between one who serves God
And one who does not serve Him.

and the offerings(A) of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.(B)

“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers,(C) adulterers(D) and perjurers,(E) against those who defraud laborers of their wages,(F) who oppress the widows(G) and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners(H) among you of justice, but do not fear(I) me,” says the Lord Almighty.

Breaking Covenant by Withholding Tithes

“I the Lord do not change.(J) So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.(K) Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away(L) from my decrees and have not kept them. Return(M) to me, and I will return to you,”(N) says the Lord Almighty.

“But you ask,(O) ‘How are we to return?’

“Will a mere mortal rob(P) God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes(Q) and offerings. You are under a curse(R)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe(S) into the storehouse,(T) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates(U) of heaven and pour out(V) so much blessing(W) that there will not be room enough to store it.(X) 11 I will prevent pests from devouring(Y) your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,(Z)” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,(AA) for yours will be a delightful land,”(AB) says the Lord Almighty.(AC)

Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God

13 “You have spoken arrogantly(AD) against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask,(AE) ‘What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(AF) to serve(AG) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(AH) and going about like mourners(AI) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(AJ) blessed. Certainly evildoers(AK) prosper,(AL) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

The Faithful Remnant

16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(AM) A scroll(AN) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(AO) the Lord and honored his name.

17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(AP) treasured possession.(AQ) I will spare(AR) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(AS) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(AT) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(AU)
