Job Keeps On Talking

17 “My spirit is broken. My days are gone. The grave is ready for me. For sure those with me make fun of me. My eyes see how they laugh at me.

“Promise that You will hear me. Who is there that will trust me? For You have kept their heart from understanding, so You will not honor them. If one speaks against friends to get money, the eyes of his children also will become weak.

“But He has made me an object of shame to the people. Men spit on me. My eyes have become weak with sorrow. All the parts of my body are like a shadow. Men who are right and good will be surprised and afraid at this. He who is without guilt will be moved to go against the sinful. But the one who is right with God will hold to his way. And he who has clean hands will become stronger and stronger. 10 But all of you try again, and I will not find a wise man among you. 11 My days are past. My plans are torn apart, even the wishes of my heart. 12 They make night into day, saying, ‘The light is near,’ when there is darkness. 13 If I look for the place of the dead as my home, I make my bed in the darkness. 14 If I say to the grave, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother and my sister,’ 15 then where is my hope? Who sees hope for me? 16 Will it go down with me to the place of the dead? Will we go down together into the dust?”

17 My spirit(A) is broken,
    my days are cut short,(B)
    the grave awaits me.(C)
Surely mockers(D) surround me;(E)
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.

“Give me, O God, the pledge you demand.(F)
Who else will put up security(G) for me?(H)
You have closed their minds to understanding;(I)
therefore you will not let them triumph.
If anyone denounces their friends for reward,(J)
the eyes of their children will fail.(K)

“God has made me a byword(L) to everyone,(M)
a man in whose face people spit.(N)
My eyes have grown dim with grief;(O)
my whole frame is but a shadow.(P)
The upright are appalled at this;
the innocent are aroused(Q) against the ungodly.
Nevertheless, the righteous(R) will hold to their ways,
and those with clean hands(S) will grow stronger.(T)

10 “But come on, all of you, try again!
I will not find a wise man among you.(U)
11 My days have passed,(V) my plans are shattered.
Yet the desires of my heart(W)
12 turn night into day;(X)
in the face of the darkness light is near.(Y)
13 If the only home I hope for is the grave,(Z)
if I spread out my bed(AA) in the realm of darkness,(AB)
14 if I say to corruption,(AC) ‘You are my father,’
and to the worm,(AD) ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’
15 where then is my hope—(AE)
who can see any hope for me?(AF)
16 Will it go down to the gates of death?(AG)
Will we descend together into the dust?”(AH)

17 My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me.

Are there not mockers with me? and doth not mine eye continue in their provocation?

Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?

For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not exalt them.

He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail.

He hath made me also a byword of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret.

Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow.

Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite.

The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.

10 But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.

11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart.

12 They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness.

13 If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.

14 I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister.

15 And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it?

16 They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
