¹⁴They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.

¹⁴They advance as through a gaping breach;^(A)
amid the ruins they come rolling in.

⁴Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

⁴the flood^(A) would have engulfed us,
the torrent^(B) would have swept over us,

⁵Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

⁵the raging waters
would have swept us away.
