⁷ He came as a witness to testify^(A) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.^(B)

⁸ He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

¹⁵ (John testified^(A) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)^(B)

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

¹⁹ Now this was John’s^(A) testimony when the Jewish leaders^[a](B) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

³² Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.^(A)

² The life appeared;^(A) we have seen it and testify to it,^(B) and we proclaim to you the eternal life,^(C) which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

¹⁴ And we have seen and testify^(A) that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.^(B)

⁶ This is the one who came by water and blood^(A)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.^{(B) 7} For there are three^(C) that testify: ⁸ the^[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. ⁹ We accept human testimony,^(D) but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God,^(E) which he has given about his Son. ¹⁰ Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.^(F) Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar,^(G) because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. ¹¹ And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,^(H) and this life is in his Son.^(I)
