Judas’s Betrayal Predicted

21 When(A) Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit(B) and testified,(C) “I assure you: One of you will betray Me!”

22 The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one He was speaking about. 23 One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved,(D) was reclining close beside Jesus.[a] 24 Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was He was talking about. 25 So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.”(E) When He had dipped the bread,(F) He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.[b] 27 After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan(G) entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.”

28 None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this. 29 Since Judas(H) kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,”(I) or that he should give something to the poor. 30 After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.(J)

The New Command

31 When(K) he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(L) is glorified, and God is glorified(M) in Him.(N) 32 If God is glorified in Him,[c] God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once.

33 “Children, I am with you a little while longer.(O) You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’(P) so now I tell you.

34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love(Q) for one another.”

Peter’s Denials Predicted

36 “Lord,” Simon Peter said to Him, “where are You going?”

Jesus answered, “Where I am going(R) you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”

37 “Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life(S) for You!”(T)

38 Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times.

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(A) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(B)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(C) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(D)

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(E) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(F)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(G) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(H) or to give something to the poor.(I) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(K)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(L) is glorified(M) and God is glorified in him.(N) 32 If God is glorified in him,[a] God will glorify the Son in himself,(O) and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(P)

34 “A new command(Q) I give you: Love one another.(R) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(S) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(T)

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(U)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(V) but you will follow later.”(W)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(X)

  1. John 13:32 Many early manuscripts do not have If God is glorified in him.

21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
