23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” They did this to fulfill(A) the Scripture(B) that says: They divided My clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing.(C)[a] And this is what the soldiers did.
Jesus’ Provision for His Mother
25 Standing(D) by the cross(E) of Jesus were His mother,(F) His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(G) 26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved(H) standing there, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
The Finished Work of Jesus
28 After(I) this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished(J) that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, “I’m thirsty!”(K) 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop[b](L) and held it up to His mouth.
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”(M) Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.(N)
Jesus’ Side Pierced
31 Since it was the preparation day,(O) the Jews did not want the bodies(P) to remain on the cross(Q) on the Sabbath(R) (for that Sabbath was a special[c] day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.(S) 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead.(T) 34 But one of the soldiers pierced(U) His side(V) with a spear, and at once blood and water(W) came out. 35 He who saw this has testified(X) so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.(Y) 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:(Z) Not one of His bones will be broken.(AA)[d] 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.(AB)[e]
Jesus’ Burial
38 After(AC) this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’ body.(AD) Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took His body away. 39 Nicodemus(AE) (who had previously come to Him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75 pounds[f] of myrrh and aloes. 40 Then they took Jesus’ body(AF) and wrapped it in linen cloths(AG) with the aromatic spices, according to the burial(AH) custom of the Jews. 41 There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. 42 They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(A) that said,
So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Near the cross(C) of Jesus stood his mother,(D) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(E) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(F) there, and the disciple whom he loved(G) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
The Death of Jesus(H)
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(I) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(J) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(K) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(L) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(M) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(N) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(O) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(P) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(Q) 35 The man who saw it(R) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(S) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(T) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](U) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](V)
The Burial of Jesus(W)
38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(X) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(Y) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(Z) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(AA) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(AB) and since the tomb was nearby,(AC) they laid Jesus there.
