23 While He was in Jerusalem(A) at the Passover Festival,(B) many trusted in His name(C) when they saw the signs He was doing. 24 Jesus, however, would not entrust Himself to them, since He knew them all 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify about man; for He Himself knew what was in man.(D)

Jesus and Nicodemus

There was a man from the Pharisees(E) named Nicodemus,(F) a ruler(G) of the Jews. This man came to Him at night and said, “Rabbi,(H) we know that You have come from God(I) as a teacher,(J) for no one could perform these signs You do unless God were with him.”(K)

Jesus replied, “I assure you: Unless someone is born again,[a](L) he cannot see the kingdom of God.”(M)

“But how can anyone be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked Him. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?”

Jesus answered, “I assure you: Unless someone is born(N) of water and the Spirit,[b](O) he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Whatever is born of the flesh(P) is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit(Q) is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you that you[c] must be born(R) again. The wind[d] blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going.(S) So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”(T)

“How can these things be?” asked Nicodemus.

10 “Are you a teacher[e] of Israel and don’t know these things?” Jesus replied. 11 “I assure you:(U) We speak what We know and We testify to what We have seen, but you[f] do not accept Our testimony.[g] 12 If I have told you about things that happen on earth and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about things of heaven? 13 No one has ascended(V) into heaven(W) except the One who descended from heaven(X)—the Son of Man.[h](Y) 14 Just as Moses(Z) lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(AA) so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in Him will[i] have eternal life.(AB)

16 “For God loved(AC) the world in this way:[j] He gave His One and Only(AD) Son,(AE) so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.(AF) 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn(AG) the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned,(AH) because he has not believed in the name(AI) of the One and Only Son(AJ) of God.

19 “This, then, is the judgment: The light(AK) has come into the world,(AL) and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who practices wicked things hates(AM) the light and avoids it,[k] so that his deeds(AN) may not be exposed. 21 But anyone who lives by[l] the truth comes to the light, so that his works(AO) may be shown to be accomplished by God.”[m]

  6. John 3:11 In Gk, the word you is pl here and throughout v. 12.
  7. John 3:11 The pronouns we and our refer to Jesus and His authority to speak for the Father.
  8. John 3:13 Other mss add who is in heaven
  9. John 3:15 Other mss add not perish, but
  10. John 3:16 The Gk word houtos, commonly translated in Jn 3:16 as “so” or “so much” occurs over 200 times in the NT. Almost without exception it is an adverb of manner, not degree (for example, see Mt 1:18). It only means “so much” when modifying an adjective (see Gl 3:3; Rv 16:18). Manner seems primarily in view in Jn 3:16, which explains the HCSB‘s rendering.
  11. John 3:20 Lit and does not come to the light
  12. John 3:21 Lit who does
  13. John 3:21 It is possible that Jesus’ words end at v. 15. Ancient Gk did not have quotation marks.

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(A) many people saw the signs(B) he was performing and believed(C) in his name.[a] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(D) for he knew what was in each person.(E)

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(F) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(G) He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(H) we know(I) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(J) you are doing if God were not with him.”(K)

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[b](L)

“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(M) Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[c] gives birth to spirit.(N) You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[d] must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[e](O)

“How can this be?”(P) Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(Q) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(R) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(S) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(T) except the one who came from heaven(U)—the Son of Man.[f](V) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(W) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[g](X) 15 that everyone who believes(Y) may have eternal life in him.”[h](Z)

16 For God so loved(AA) the world that he gave(AB) his one and only Son,(AC) that whoever believes(AD) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(AE) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(AF) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(AG) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(AH) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(AI) 19 This is the verdict: Light(AJ) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(AK) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(AL) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

And the Lord’s hand was on him there.(H)

Vision of the Lord’s Glory

I looked and there was a whirlwind(I) coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth and brilliant light all around it. In the center of the fire, there was a gleam like amber.(J) The form of four living creatures came from it.(K) And this was their appearance: They had human form, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the hooves of a calf, sparkling like the gleam of polished bronze.(L) They had human hands under their wings on their four sides.(M) All four of them had faces and wings.(N) Their wings were touching. The creatures did not turn as they moved; each one went straight ahead.(O) 10 The form of each of their faces was that of a man,(P) and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left, and the face of an eagle.(Q) 11 That is what their faces were like. Their wings were spread upward; each had two wings touching that of another and two wings covering its body.(R) 12 Each creature went straight ahead.(S) Wherever the Spirit[a] wanted to go, they went without turning as they moved.(T)

13 The form of the living creatures was like the appearance of burning coals of fire and torches.(U) Fire was moving back and forth between the living creatures; it was bright, with lightning coming out of it. 14 The creatures were darting back and forth(V) like flashes of lightning.(W)

15 When I looked at the living creatures, there was one wheel on the ground beside each creature that had four faces. 16 The appearance of the wheels(X) and their craftsmanship was like the gleam of beryl,(Y) and all four had the same form. Their appearance and craftsmanship was like a wheel within a wheel. 17 When they moved, they went in any of the four directions, without pivoting as they moved. 18 Their rims were large and frightening. Each of their four rims were full of eyes(Z) all around. 19 So when the living creatures moved,(AA) the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the earth, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the Spirit[b] wanted to go, the creatures went in the direction the Spirit was moving. The wheels rose alongside them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, the wheels moved; when the creatures stood still, the wheels stood still; and when the creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose alongside them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

22 The shape of an expanse,(AB) with a gleam like awe-inspiring crystal,(AC) was spread out over the heads of the living creatures.(AD) 23 And under the expanse their wings extended one toward another. Each of them also had two wings covering their bodies. 24 When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the roar of mighty waters,(AE) like the voice of the Almighty,(AF) and a sound of commotion like the noise of an army.(AG) When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

25 A voice came from above the expanse over their heads; when they stood still, they lowered their wings. 26 The shape of a throne with the appearance of sapphire[c] stone was above the expanse.[d](AH) There was a form with the appearance of a human on the throne high above.(AI) 27 From what seemed to be His waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire enclosing it all around.(AJ) From what seemed to be His waist down, I also saw what looked like fire. There was a brilliant light all around Him. 28 The appearance of the brilliant light all around was like that of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day.(AK) This was the appearance of the form of the Lord’s glory.(AL) When I saw it, I fell facedown and heard a voice speaking.(AM)

Ezekiel’s Inaugural Vision

In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles(A) by the Kebar River,(B) the heavens were opened(C) and I saw visions(D) of God.

On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin(E) the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel(F) the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians.[a] There the hand of the Lord was on him.(G)

I looked, and I saw a windstorm(H) coming out of the north(I)—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal,(J) and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures.(K) In appearance their form was human,(L) but each of them had four faces(M) and four wings. Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze.(N) Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands.(O) All four of them had faces and wings, and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.(P)

10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle.(Q) 11 Such were their faces. They each had two wings(R) spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went.(S) 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals(T) of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning(U) flashed out of it. 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.(V)

15 As I looked at the living creatures,(W) I saw a wheel(X) on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz,(Y) and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction(Z) as the creatures went. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes(AA) all around.

19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go,(AB) and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.(AC)

22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked something like a vault,(AD) sparkling like crystal, and awesome. 23 Under the vault their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing(AE) waters, like the voice(AF) of the Almighty,[b] like the tumult of an army.(AG) When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

25 Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. 26 Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne(AH) of lapis lazuli,(AI) and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man.(AJ) 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him.(AK) 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow(AL) in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.(AM)

This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory(AN) of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown,(AO) and I heard the voice of one speaking.
