The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

After this there was a (A)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is in Jerusalem by (B)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic[a] called Bethesda,[b] which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and (C)paralyzed.[c] One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, (D)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” (E)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

(F)Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews[d] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and (G)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for (H)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! (I)Sin no more, (J)that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews (K)were persecuting Jesus, (L)because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Jesus Is Equal with God

18 This was why the Jews (M)were seeking all the more to kill him, (N)because not only was he (O)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God (P)his own Father, (Q)making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (R)the Son (S)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[e] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For (T)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And (U)greater works than these will he show him, so that (V)you may marvel. 21 For as the Father (W)raises the dead and (X)gives them life, so (Y)also the Son gives life (Z)to whom he will. 22 (AA)For the Father judges no one, but (AB)has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they (AC)honor the Father. (AD)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AE)whoever hears my word and (AF)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (AG)does not come into judgment, but (AH)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (AI)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (AJ)the dead will hear (AK)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (AL)will live. 26 (AM)For as the Father has life in himself, (AN)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (AO)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (AP)an hour is coming when (AQ)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (AR)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

30 (AS)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and (AT)my judgment is just, because (AU)I seek not my own will (AV)but the will of him who sent me. 31 (AW)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is (AX)another who bears witness about me, and (AY)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 (AZ)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that (BA)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and (BB)shining lamp, and (BC)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But (BD)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For (BE)the works that the Father has given me (BF)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, (BG)bear witness about me that (BH)the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me (BI)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, (BJ)his form you have never seen, 38 and (BK)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 (BL)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and (BM)it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet (BN)you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 (BO)I do not receive glory from people. 42 But (BP)I know that you do not have (BQ)the love of God within you. 43 I have come (BR)in my Father's name, and (BS)you do not receive me. (BT)If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and (BU)do not seek the glory that comes from (BV)the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, (BW)on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for (BX)he wrote of me. 47 But (BY)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

After this (BZ)Jesus went away to the other side of (CA)the Sea of Galilee, which is (CB)the Sea of Tiberias. And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on (CC)the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now (CD)the Passover, the (CE)feast of the Jews, was at hand. (CF)Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to (CG)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. (CH)Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[f] worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, (CI)Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five (CJ)barley loaves and two fish, but (CK)what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” (CL)Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and (CM)when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, (CN)“This is indeed (CO)the Prophet (CP)who is to come into the world!”

15 (CQ)Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus (CR)withdrew again to (CS)the mountain by himself.

Jesus Walks on Water

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[g] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 (CT)But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

I Am the Bread of Life

22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only (CU)one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord (CV)had given thanks. 24 (CW)So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and (CX)went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, (CY)“Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (CZ)you are seeking me, not because you saw (DA)signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 (DB)Do not work for the food that perishes, but for (DC)the food that endures to eternal life, which (DD)the Son of Man will give to you. For on (DE)him God the Father has (DF)set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing (DG)the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, (DH)that you believe in him whom (DI)he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, (DJ)“Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 (DK)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, (DL)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is (DM)he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, (DN)“Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, (DO)“I am the bread of life; (DP)whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 (DQ)All that (DR)the Father gives me will come to me, and (DS)whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For (DT)I have come down from heaven, not to do (DU)my own will but (DV)the will of him (DW)who sent me. 39 And (DX)this is the will of him who sent me, (DY)that I should lose nothing of (DZ)all that he has given me, but (EA)raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who (EB)looks on the Son and (EC)believes in him (ED)should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, (EE)“I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, (EF)“Is not this Jesus, (EG)the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (EH)we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me (EI)draws him. And (EJ)I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, (EK)‘And they will all be (EL)taught by God.’ (EM)Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 (EN)not that anyone has seen the Father except (EO)he who is from God; he (EP)has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, (EQ)whoever believes has eternal life. 48 (ER)I am the bread of life. 49 (ES)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and (ET)they died. 50 (EU)This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it (EV)and not die. 51 I am the living bread (EW)that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give (EX)for the life of the world is (EY)my flesh.”

52 The Jews then (EZ)disputed among themselves, saying, (FA)“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (FB)the Son of Man and drink his blood, you (FC)have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (FD)has eternal life, and (FE)I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (FF)abides in me, and I in him. 57 As (FG)the living Father (FH)sent me, and (FI)I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 (FJ)This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[h] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus[i] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught (FK)at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 (FL)When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (FM)knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see (FN)the Son of Man (FO)ascending to (FP)where he was before? 63 (FQ)It is the Spirit who gives life; (FR)the flesh is no help at all. (FS)The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But (FT)there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus (FU)knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and (FV)who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you (FW)that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 (FX)After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to (FY)the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (FZ)the words of eternal life, 69 and (GA)we have believed, and have come to know, that (GB)you are (GC)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (GD)“Did I not choose you, (GE)the twelve? And yet one of you is (GF)a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas (GG)the son of Simon Iscariot, for (GH)he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Jesus at the Feast of Booths

After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because (GI)the Jews[j] were seeking to kill him. Now (GJ)the Jews' Feast of (GK)Booths was at hand. (GL)So his brothers[k] said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, (GM)show yourself to the world.” (GN)For not even (GO)his brothers believed in him. Jesus said to them, (GP)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but (GQ)it hates me because I testify about it that (GR)its works are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not[l] going up to this feast, for (GS)my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

10 But after (GT)his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 (GU)The Jews (GV)were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much (GW)muttering about him among the people. (GX)While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, (GY)he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet (GZ)for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.

14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up (HA)into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore (HB)marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,[m] when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, (HC)“My teaching is not mine, but his (HD)who sent me. 17 (HE)If anyone's will is to do God's[n] will, (HF)he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I (HG)am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority (HH)seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 (HI)Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. (HJ)Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, (HK)“You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did (HL)one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 (HM)Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but (HN)from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, (HO)are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? 24 (HP)Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Can This Be the Christ?

25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom (HQ)they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, (HR)speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that (HS)the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But (HT)we know (HU)where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, (HV)no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, (HW)as he taught in the temple, (HX)“You know me, and you know where I come from. But (HY)I have not come of my own accord. (HZ)He who sent me is true, (IA)and him you do not know. 29 (IB)I know him, for I come (IC)from him, and (ID)he sent me.” 30 (IE)So they were seeking to arrest him, but (IF)no one laid a hand on him, (IG)because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet (IH)many of the people believed in him. They said, (II)“When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd (IJ)muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent (IK)officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, (IL)“I will be with you a little longer, and then (IM)I am going to him who sent me. 34 (IN)You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? (IO)Does he intend to go to (IP)the Dispersion among (IQ)the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, (IR)‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

Rivers of Living Water

37 (IS)On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, (IT)“If anyone thirsts, let him (IU)come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, (IV)as[o] the Scripture has said, (IW)‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of (IX)living water.’” 39 Now (IY)this he said about the Spirit, (IZ)whom those who believed in him were to receive, (JA)for as yet the Spirit had not been (JB)given, (JC)because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division Among the People

40 When they heard these words, (JD)some of the people said, “This really is (JE)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (JF)the Christ.” But some said, (JG)“Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes (JH)from the offspring of David, and comes (JI)from Bethlehem, the village (JJ)where David was?” 43 So there was (JK)a division among the people over him. 44 (JL)Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

45 (JM)The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, (JN)“No one ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, (JO)“Have you also been deceived? 48 (JP)Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 (JQ)Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 (JR)“Does our law judge a man without first (JS)giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, (JT)“Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that (JU)no prophet arises from Galilee.”

[The earliest manuscripts do not include 7:53–8:11.][p]

The Woman Caught in Adultery

53 [[They went each to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. (JV)Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and (JW)he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now (JX)in the Law, Moses commanded us (JY)to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said (JZ)to test him, (KA)that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, (KB)“Let him who is without sin among you (KC)be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, (KD)“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on (KE)sin no more.”]]

I Am the Light of the World

12 (KF)Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, (KG)“I am the light of the world. Whoever (KH)follows me will not (KI)walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, (KJ)“You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, (KK)my testimony is true, for I know (KL)where I came from and (KM)where I am going, but (KN)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (KO)You judge according to the flesh; (KP)I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, (KQ)my judgment is true, for (KR)it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father[q] who sent me. 17 (KS)In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and (KT)the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, (KU)“You know neither me nor my Father. (KV)If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in (KW)the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but (KX)no one arrested him, because (KY)his hour had not yet come.

21 So he said to them again, (KZ)“I am going away, and (LA)you will seek me, and (LB)you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, (LC)“Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, (LD)“You are from below; I am from above. (LE)You are of this world; (LF)I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you (LG)would die in your sins, for (LH)unless you believe that (LI)I am he you will die in your sins.” 25 So they said to him, (LJ)“Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but (LK)he who sent me is true, and I declare (LL)to the world (LM)what I have heard from him.” 27 They did not understand that (LN)he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have (LO)lifted up the Son of Man, (LP)then you will know that (LQ)I am he, and that (LR)I do nothing on my own authority, but (LS)speak just as the Father taught me. 29 And (LT)he who sent me is with me. (LU)He has not left me alone, for (LV)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, (LW)many believed in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (LX)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (LY)know the truth, and the truth (LZ)will set you free.” 33 They answered him, (MA)“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (MB)everyone who practices sin is a slave[r] to sin. 35 (MC)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (MD)the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (ME)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 (MF)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (MG)from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39 They answered him, (MH)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, (MI)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now (MJ)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (MK)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, (ML)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have (MM)one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, (MN)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for (MO)I came from God and (MP)I am here. (MQ)I came not of my own accord, but (MR)he sent me. 43 (MS)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (MT)bear to hear my word. 44 (MU)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (MV)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (MW)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (MX)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 (MY)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. (MZ)The reason why you do not hear them is that (NA)you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and (NB)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but (NC)I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet (ND)I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, (NE)I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never (NF)see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! (NG)Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet (NH)you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never (NI)taste death.’ 53 (NJ)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (NK)“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. (NL)It is my Father who glorifies me, (NM)of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’[s] 55 But (NN)you have not known him. (NO)I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be (NP)a liar (NQ)like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 (NR)Your father Abraham (NS)rejoiced (NT)that he would see my day. (NU)He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”[t] 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, (NV)I am.” 59 So (NW)they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, (NX)“Rabbi, (NY)who sinned, (NZ)this man or (OA)his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but (OB)that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must (OC)work the works of him who sent me (OD)while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, (OE)I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, (OF)he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. (OG)Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in (OH)the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and (OI)came back seeing.

The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, (OJ)“Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, (OK)“The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 (OL)Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 (OM)So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not (ON)from God, (OO)for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, (OP)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (OQ)there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, (OR)“He is a prophet.”

18 (OS)The Jews[u] did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”

The Healing at the Pool

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(BE)

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(BF) he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(BG) and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival(BH) was near.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(BI) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[e] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(BJ) spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(BK)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(BL) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(BM) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(BN) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(BO) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(BP)

Jesus Walks on the Water(BQ)

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[f] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(BR) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(BS) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(BT) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(BU) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(BV) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(BW) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(BX) when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(BY) not because you saw the signs(BZ) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(CA) to eternal life,(CB) which the Son of Man(CC) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(CD) of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(CE) in the one he has sent.”(CF)

30 So they asked him, “What sign(CG) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(CH) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(CI) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[g](CJ)

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(CK) and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(CL)

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(CM) the bread of life.(CN) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(CO) in me will never be thirsty.(CP) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(CQ) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(CR) not to do my will but to do the will(CS) of him who sent me.(CT) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(CU) but raise them up at the last day.(CV) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(CW) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(CX) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(CY) whose father and mother we know?(CZ) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(DA)

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(DB) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[h](DC) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(DD) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(DE) 48 I am the bread of life.(DF) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(DG) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(DH) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(DI) that came down from heaven.(DJ) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(DK)

52 Then the Jews(DL) began to argue sharply among themselves,(DM) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(DN) of the Son of Man(DO) and drink his blood,(DP) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(DQ) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(DR) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(DS) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(DT) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(DU) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(DV)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(DW) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(DX) ascend to where he was before!(DY) 63 The Spirit gives life;(DZ) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[i] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(EA) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(EB) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(EC)

66 From this time many of his disciples(ED) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(EE)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(EF) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(EG) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(EH)

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(EI) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(EJ) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(EK) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(EL)

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want[j] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders(EM) there were looking for a way to kill him.(EN) But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles(EO) was near, Jesus’ brothers(EP) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” For even his own brothers did not believe in him.(EQ)

Therefore Jesus told them, “My time(ER) is not yet here; for you any time will do. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me(ES) because I testify that its works are evil.(ET) You go to the festival. I am not[k] going up to this festival, because my time(EU) has not yet fully come.” After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus(EV) and asking, “Where is he?”

12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”(EW) 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.(EX)

Jesus Teaches at the Festival

14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.(EY) 15 The Jews(EZ) there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning(FA) without having been taught?”(FB)

16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.(FC) 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out(FD) whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory,(FE) but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law?(FF) Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”(FG)

20 “You are demon-possessed,”(FH) the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”

21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle,(FI) and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision(FJ) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),(FK) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”(FL)

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(FM) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(FN) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(FO) 27 But we know where this man is from;(FP) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(FQ) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(FR) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(FS) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(FT) because I am from him and he sent me.”(FU)

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(FV) because his hour had not yet come.(FW) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(FX) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(FY) than this man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(FZ) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(GA) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(GB)

35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(GC) among the Greeks,(GD) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(GE)

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(GF) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(GG) 38 Whoever believes(GH) in me, as Scripture has said,(GI) rivers of living water(GJ) will flow from within them.”[l](GK) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(GL) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(GM) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(GN)

40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”(GO)

41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(GP) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(GQ) and from Bethlehem,(GR) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(GS) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(GT)

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(GU) the guards replied.

47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(GV) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(GW) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

50 Nicodemus,(GX) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(GY)

[The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]

53 Then they all went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.(GZ)

At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(HA) The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(HB) Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap,(HC) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(HD)

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(HE) at her.”(HF) Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,”(HG) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(HH)

Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(HI) the light of the world.(HJ) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(HK)

13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(HL)

14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(HM) But you have no idea where I come from(HN) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(HO) I pass judgment on no one.(HP) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(HQ) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(HR) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(HS)

19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

“You do not know me or my Father,”(HT) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(HU) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(HV) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(HW) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(HX)

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(HY) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(HZ)

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(IA) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(IB) you will indeed die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(IC) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(ID)

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[m] the Son of Man,(IE) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(IF) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(IG) for I always do what pleases him.”(IH) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(II)

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(IJ) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(IK)

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(IL) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(IM) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(IN) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(IO) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(IP) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(IQ) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[n](IR)

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,”(IS) said Jesus, “then you would[o] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(IT) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(IU) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(IV)

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(IW)

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(IX) for I have come here from God.(IY) I have not come on my own;(IZ) God sent me.(JA) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(JB) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(JC) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(JD) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(JE) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(JF) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Jesus’ Claims About Himself

48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(JG) and demon-possessed?”(JH)

49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(JI) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(JJ)

52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(JK) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(JL) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(JM) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(JN) 55 Though you do not know him,(JO) I know him.(JP) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(JQ) 56 Your father Abraham(JR) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(JS) and was glad.”

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(JT) I am!”(JU) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(JV) but Jesus hid himself,(JW) slipping away from the temple grounds.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(JX) who sinned,(JY) this man(JZ) or his parents,(KA) that he was born blind?”

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(KB) As long as it is day,(KC) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(KD)

After saying this, he spit(KE) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(KF) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(KG)

His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(KH) Some claimed that he was.

Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”

But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”

10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.

11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(KI)

12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.

“I don’t know,” he said.

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(KJ) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(KK) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(KL)

But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(KM) So they were divided.(KN)

17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”

The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(KO)

18 They(KP) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”

20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind.
