28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(F) because his hour had not yet come.(G) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(H) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(I) than this man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(J) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(K) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(L)

35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(M) among the Greeks,(N) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(O)

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(P) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(Q) 38 Whoever believes(R) in me, as Scripture has said,(S) rivers of living water(T) will flow from within them.”[a](U) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(V) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(W) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(X)

Jesus and the Religious Leaders

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [b]to them, (I)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (J)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (K)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (L)cannot come.”

35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (M)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (N)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (O)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (P)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (Q)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (R)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [c]believing in Him would receive; for the [d]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (S)glorified.
