Judgment on False Teachers

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our (A)common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you (B)to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For (C)certain people (D)have crept in unnoticed (E)who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert (F)the grace of our God into sensuality and (G)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want (H)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that (I)Jesus, who saved[a] a people out of the land of Egypt, (J)afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And (K)the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as (L)Sodom and Gomorrah and (M)the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and (N)pursued unnatural desire,[b] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and (O)blaspheme the glorious ones. But when (P)the archangel (Q)Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing (R)about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, (S)“The Lord rebuke you.” 10 (T)But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in (U)the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain (V)to Balaam's error and (W)perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs[c] (X)at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, (Y)shepherds feeding themselves; (Z)waterless clouds, (AA)swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, (AB)uprooted; 13 (AC)wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of (AD)their own shame; (AE)wandering stars, (AF)for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

14 It was also about these that Enoch, (AG)the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, (AH)“Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 (AI)to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have (AJ)committed in such an ungodly way, and of all (AK)the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, (AL)following their own sinful desires; (AM)they are loud-mouthed boasters, (AN)showing favoritism to gain advantage.

The Sin and Doom of Ungodly People

Dear friends,(A) although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share,(B) I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend(C) for the faith(D) that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.(E) For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about[a] long ago have secretly slipped in among you.(F) They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.(G)

Though you already know all this,(H) I want to remind you(I) that the Lord[b] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.(J) And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.(K) In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah(L) and the surrounding towns(M) gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.(N)

In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.(O) But even the archangel(P) Michael,(Q) when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses,(R) did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”[c](S) 10 Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as irrational animals do—will destroy them.(T)

11 Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain;(U) they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error;(V) they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.(W)

12 These people are blemishes at your love feasts,(X) eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves.(Y) They are clouds without rain,(Z) blown along by the wind;(AA) autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted(AB)—twice dead. 13 They are wild waves of the sea,(AC) foaming up their shame;(AD) wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.(AE)

14 Enoch,(AF) the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming(AG) with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones(AH) 15 to judge(AI) everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”[d](AJ) 16 These people are grumblers(AK) and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires;(AL) they boast(AM) about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
