The Burnt Offering

1 The Lord called to Moses^(A) and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.^(B) He said, ²“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord,^(C) bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.^(D)

³“‘If the offering is a burnt offering^(E) from the herd,^(F) you are to offer a male without defect.^(G) You must present it at the entrance to the tent^(H) of meeting so that it will be acceptable^(I) to the Lord. ⁴You are to lay your hand on the head^(J) of the burnt offering,^(K) and it will be accepted^(L) on your behalf to make atonement^(M) for you. ⁵You are to slaughter^(N) the young bull^(O) before the Lord, and then Aaron’s sons^(P) the priests shall bring the blood and splash it against the sides of the altar^(Q) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ⁶You are to skin^(R) the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.^(S) ⁷The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood^(T) on the fire. ⁸Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat,^(U) on the wood^(V) that is burning on the altar. ⁹You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,^(W) and the priest is to burn all of it^(X) on the altar.^(Y) It is a burnt offering,^(Z) a food offering,^(AA) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(AB)

¹⁰“‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep^(AC) or the goats,^(AD) you are to offer a male without defect. ¹¹You are to slaughter it at the north side of the altar^(AE) before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar.^(AF) ¹²You are to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat,^(AG) on the wood that is burning on the altar. ¹³You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,^(AH) and the priest is to bring all of them and burn them^(AI) on the altar.^(AJ) It is a burnt offering,^(AK) a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

¹⁴“‘If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, you are to offer a dove or a young pigeon.^(AL) ¹⁵The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head^(AM) and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar.^(AN) ¹⁶He is to remove the crop and the feathers^[a] and throw them down east of the altar where the ashes^(AO) are. ¹⁷He shall tear it open by the wings, not dividing it completely,^(AP) and then the priest shall burn it on the wood^(AQ) that is burning on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

The Grain Offering

2 “‘When anyone brings a grain offering^(AR) to the Lord, their offering is to be of the finest flour.^(AS) They are to pour olive oil^(AT) on it,^(AU) put incense on it^(AV) ²and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour^(AW) and oil, together with all the incense,^(AX) and burn this as a memorial^[b] portion^(AY) on the altar, a food offering,^(AZ) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(BA) ³The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;^(BB) it is a most holy^(BC) part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.

⁴“‘If you bring a grain offering baked in an oven,^(BD) it is to consist of the finest flour: either thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in or thin loaves^(BE) made without yeast and brushed with olive oil.^(BF) ⁵If your grain offering is prepared on a griddle,^(BG) it is to be made of the finest flour mixed with oil, and without yeast. ⁶Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. ⁷If your grain offering is cooked in a pan,^(BH) it is to be made of the finest flour and some olive oil. ⁸Bring the grain offering made of these things to the Lord; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar. ⁹He shall take out the memorial portion^(BI) from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(BJ) ¹⁰The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;^(BK) it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.^(BL)

¹¹“‘Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast,^(BM) for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord. ¹²You may bring them to the Lord as an offering of the firstfruits,^(BN) but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. ¹³Season all your grain offerings with salt.^(BO) Do not leave the salt of the covenant^(BP) of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.

¹⁴“‘If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits^(BQ) to the Lord, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire. ¹⁵Put oil and incense^(BR) on it; it is a grain offering. ¹⁶The priest shall burn the memorial portion^(BS) of the crushed grain and the oil, together with all the incense,^(BT) as a food offering presented to the Lord.^(BU)

The Fellowship Offering

3 “‘If your offering is a fellowship offering,^(BV) and you offer an animal from the herd, whether male or female, you are to present before the Lord an animal without defect.^(BW) ²You are to lay your hand on the head^(BX) of your offering and slaughter it^(BY) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.^(BZ) Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash^(CA) the blood against the sides^(CB) of the altar.^(CC) ³From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering to the Lord: the internal organs^(CD) and all the fat^(CE) that is connected to them, ⁴both kidneys^(CF) with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. ⁵Then Aaron’s sons^(CG) are to burn it on the altar^(CH) on top of the burnt offering^(CI) that is lying on the burning wood;^(CJ) it is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(CK)

⁶“‘If you offer an animal from the flock as a fellowship offering^(CL) to the Lord, you are to offer a male or female without defect. ⁷If you offer a lamb,^(CM) you are to present it before the Lord,^(CN) ⁸lay your hand on its head and slaughter it^(CO) in front of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron’s sons shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar. ⁹From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering^(CP) to the Lord: its fat, the entire fat tail cut off close to the backbone, the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, ¹⁰both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. ¹¹The priest shall burn them on the altar^(CQ) as a food offering^(CR) presented to the Lord.^(CS)

¹²“‘If your offering is a goat,^(CT) you are to present it before the Lord, ¹³lay your hand on its head and slaughter it in front of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron’s sons shall splash^(CU) its blood against the sides of the altar.^(CV) ¹⁴From what you offer you are to present this food offering to the Lord: the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, ¹⁵both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys.^(CW) ¹⁶The priest shall burn them on the altar^(CX) as a food offering,^(CY) a pleasing aroma.^(CZ) All the fat^(DA) is the Lord’s.^(DB)

¹⁷“‘This is a lasting ordinance^(DC) for the generations to come,^(DD) wherever you live:^(DE) You must not eat any fat or any blood.^(DF)’”

The Sin Offering

4 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally^(DG) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands^(DH)—

³“‘If the anointed priest^(DI) sins,^(DJ) bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the Lord a young bull^(DK) without defect^(DL) as a sin offering^[c]^(DM) for the sin he has committed.^(DN) ⁴He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord.^(DO) He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the Lord. ⁵Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood^(DP) and carry it into the tent of meeting. ⁶He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle^(DQ) some of it seven times before the Lord,^(DR) in front of the curtain of the sanctuary.^(DS) ⁷The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns^(DT) of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar^(DU) of burnt offering^(DV) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ⁸He shall remove all the fat^(DW) from the bull of the sin offering—all the fat that is connected to the internal organs, ⁹both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys^(DX)— ¹⁰just as the fat is removed from the ox^[d]^(DY) sacrificed as a fellowship offering.^(DZ) Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.^(EA) ¹¹But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the internal organs and the intestines^(EB)— ¹²that is, all the rest of the bull—he must take outside the camp^(EC) to a place ceremonially clean,^(ED) where the ashes^(EE) are thrown, and burn it^(EF) there in a wood fire on the ash heap.^(EG)

¹³“‘If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally^(EH) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guilt ¹⁴and the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull^(EI) as a sin offering^(EJ) and present it before the tent of meeting. ¹⁵The elders^(EK) of the community are to lay their hands^(EL) on the bull’s head^(EM) before the Lord, and the bull shall be slaughtered before the Lord.^(EN) ¹⁶Then the anointed priest is to take some of the bull’s blood^(EO) into the tent of meeting. ¹⁷He shall dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle^(EP) it before the Lord^(EQ) seven times in front of the curtain. ¹⁸He is to put some of the blood^(ER) on the horns of the altar that is before the Lord^(ES) in the tent of meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar^(ET) of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ¹⁹He shall remove all the fat^(EU) from it and burn it on the altar,^(EV) ²⁰and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement^(EW) for the community, and they will be forgiven.^(EX) ²¹Then he shall take the bull outside the camp^(EY) and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the community.^(EZ)

²²“‘When a leader^(FA) sins unintentionally^(FB) and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, when he realizes his guilt ²³and the sin he has committed becomes known, he must bring as his offering a male goat^(FC) without defect. ²⁴He is to lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord.^(FD) It is a sin offering.^(FE) ²⁵Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar^(FF) of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.^(FG) ²⁶He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement^(FH) for the leader’s sin, and he will be forgiven.^(FI)

²⁷“‘If any member of the community sins unintentionally^(FJ) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, when they realize their guilt ²⁸and the sin they have committed becomes known, they must bring as their offering^(FK) for the sin they committed a female goat^(FL) without defect. ²⁹They are to lay their hand on the head^(FM) of the sin offering^(FN) and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering.^(FO) ³⁰Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering^(FP) and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. ³¹They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar^(FQ) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(FR) In this way the priest will make atonement^(FS) for them, and they will be forgiven.^(FT)

³²“‘If someone brings a lamb^(FU) as their sin offering, they are to bring a female without defect.^(FV) ³³They are to lay their hand on its head and slaughter it^(FW) for a sin offering^(FX) at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.^(FY) ³⁴Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.^(FZ) ³⁵They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar^(GA) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.

5 “‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify^(GB) regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.^(GC)

²“‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground)^(GD) and they are unaware that they have become unclean,^(GE) but then they come to realize their guilt; ³or if they touch human uncleanness^(GF) (anything that would make them unclean)^(GG) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; ⁴or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath^(GH) to do anything, whether good or evil^(GI) (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— ⁵when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess^(GJ) in what way they have sinned. ⁶As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat^(GK) from the flock as a sin offering^[e];^(GL) and the priest shall make atonement^(GM) for them for their sin.

⁷“‘Anyone who cannot afford^(GN) a lamb^(GO) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons^(GP) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. ⁸They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck,^(GQ) not dividing it completely,^(GR) ⁹and is to splash^(GS) some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar;^(GT) the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar.^(GU) It is a sin offering. ¹⁰The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way^(GV) and make atonement^(GW) for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.^(GX)

¹¹“‘If, however, they cannot afford^(GY) two doves or two young pigeons,^(GZ) they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah^[f]^(HA) of the finest flour^(HB) for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. ¹²They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial^[g] portion^(HC) and burn it on the altar^(HD) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. It is a sin offering. ¹³In this way the priest will make atonement^(HE) for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest,^(HF) as in the case of the grain offering.^(HG)’”

The Guilt Offering

¹⁴The Lord said to Moses: ¹⁵“When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally^(HH) in regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty^(HI) a ram^(HJ) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.^[h]^(HK) It is a guilt offering.^(HL) ¹⁶They must make restitution^(HM) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value^(HN) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

¹⁷“If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though they do not know it,^(HO) they are guilty and will be held responsible.^(HP) ¹⁸They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering^(HQ) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven.^(HR) ¹⁹It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of^[i] wrongdoing against the Lord.”^(HS)

6 ^[j]The Lord said to Moses: ²“If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord^(HT) by deceiving a neighbor^(HU) about something entrusted to them or left in their care^(HV) or about something stolen, or if they cheat^(HW) their neighbor, ³or if they find lost property and lie about it,^(HX) or if they swear falsely^(HY) about any such sin that people may commit— ⁴when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return^(HZ) what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found, ⁵or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution^(IA) in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.^(IB) ⁶And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering,^(IC) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value.^(ID) ⁷In this way the priest will make atonement^(IE) for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”

The Burnt Offering

⁸The Lord said to Moses: ⁹“Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering^(IF): The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.^(IG) ¹⁰The priest shall then put on his linen clothes,^(IH) with linen undergarments next to his body,^(II) and shall remove the ashes^(IJ) of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed on the altar and place them beside the altar. ¹¹Then he is to take off these clothes and put on others, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.^(IK) ¹²The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood^(IL) and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat^(IM) of the fellowship offerings^(IN) on it. ¹³The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

The Grain Offering

¹⁴“‘These are the regulations for the grain offering:^(IO) Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the Lord, in front of the altar. ¹⁵The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense^(IP) on the grain offering,^(IQ) and burn the memorial^[k] portion^(IR) on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ¹⁶Aaron and his sons^(IS) shall eat the rest^(IT) of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast^(IU) in the sanctuary area;^(IV) they are to eat it in the courtyard^(IW) of the tent of meeting.^(IX) ¹⁷It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share^(IY) of the food offerings presented to me.^(IZ) Like the sin offering^[l] and the guilt offering, it is most holy.^(JA) ¹⁸Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it.^(JB) For all generations to come^(JC) it is his perpetual share^(JD) of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.^[m]^(JE)’”

¹⁹The Lord also said to Moses, ²⁰“This is the offering Aaron and his sons are to bring to the Lord on the day he^[n] is anointed:^(JF) a tenth of an ephah^[o]^(JG) of the finest flour^(JH) as a regular grain offering,^(JI) half of it in the morning and half in the evening. ²¹It must be prepared with oil on a griddle;^(JJ) bring it well-mixed and present the grain offering broken^[p] in pieces as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ²²The son who is to succeed him as anointed priest^(JK) shall prepare it. It is the Lord’s perpetual share and is to be burned completely.^(JL) ²³Every grain offering of a priest shall be burned completely; it must not be eaten.”

The Sin Offering

²⁴The Lord said to Moses, ²⁵“Say to Aaron and his sons: ‘These are the regulations for the sin offering:^(JM) The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord^(JN) in the place^(JO) the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy. ²⁶The priest who offers it shall eat it; it is to be eaten in the sanctuary area,^(JP) in the courtyard^(JQ) of the tent of meeting.^(JR) ²⁷Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy,^(JS) and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment, you must wash it in the sanctuary area. ²⁸The clay pot^(JT) the meat is cooked in must be broken; but if it is cooked in a bronze pot, the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water. ²⁹Any male in a priest’s family may eat it;^(JU) it is most holy.^(JV) ³⁰But any sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement^(JW) in the Holy Place^(JX) must not be eaten; it must be burned up.^(JY)

The Guilt Offering

7 “‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering,^(JZ) which is most holy: ²The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. ³All its fat^(KA) shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, ⁴both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys.^(KB) ⁵The priest shall burn them on the altar^(KC) as a food offering presented to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. ⁶Any male in a priest’s family may eat it,^(KD) but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy.^(KE)

⁷“‘The same law applies to both the sin offering^[q]^(KF) and the guilt offering:^(KG) They belong to the priest^(KH) who makes atonement with them.^(KI) ⁸The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide^(KJ) for himself. ⁹Every grain offering baked in an oven^(KK) or cooked in a pan^(KL) or on a griddle^(KM) belongs to the priest who offers it, ¹⁰and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.

The Fellowship Offering

¹¹“‘These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the Lord:

¹²“‘If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering^(KN) they are to offer thick loaves^(KO) made without yeast^(KP) and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves^(KQ) made without yeast and brushed with oil,^(KR) and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. ¹³Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving^(KS) they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast.^(KT) ¹⁴They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the Lord; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. ¹⁵The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning.^(KU)

¹⁶“‘If, however, their offering is the result of a vow^(KV) or is a freewill offering,^(KW) the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day.^(KX) ¹⁷Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up.^(KY) ¹⁸If any meat of the fellowship offering^(KZ) is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted.^(LA) It will not be reckoned^(LB) to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible.^(LC)

¹⁹“‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. ²⁰But if anyone who is unclean^(LD) eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord, they must be cut off from their people.^(LE) ²¹Anyone who touches something unclean^(LF)—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground^[r]—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.’”

Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden

²²The Lord said to Moses, ²³“Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats.^(LG) ²⁴The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals^(LH) may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. ²⁵Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be^[s] presented to the Lord must be cut off from their people. ²⁶And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood^(LI) of any bird or animal. ²⁷Anyone who eats blood^(LJ) must be cut off from their people.’”

The Priests’ Share

²⁸The Lord said to Moses, ²⁹“Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord. ³⁰With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering.^(LK) ³¹The priest shall burn the fat on the altar,^(LL) but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons.^(LM) ³²You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution.^(LN) ³³The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. ³⁴From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh^(LO) that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons^(LP) as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”

³⁵This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. ³⁶On the day they were anointed,^(LQ) the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.

³⁷These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering,^(LR) the grain offering,^(LS) the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering^(LT) and the fellowship offering, ³⁸which the Lord gave Moses^(LU) at Mount Sinai^(LV) in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord.^(LW)

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons^(LX)

8 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Bring Aaron and his sons,^(LY) their garments,^(LZ) the anointing oil,^(MA) the bull for the sin offering,^[t]^(MB) the two rams^(MC) and the basket containing bread made without yeast,^(MD) ³and gather the entire assembly^(ME) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” ⁴Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

⁵Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.^(MF)” ⁶Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.^(MG) ⁷He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him.^(MH) ⁸He placed the breastpiece^(MI) on him and put the Urim and Thummim^(MJ) in the breastpiece. ⁹Then he placed the turban^(MK) on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem,^(ML) on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses.^(MM)

¹⁰Then Moses took the anointing oil^(MN) and anointed^(MO) the tabernacle^(MP) and everything in it, and so consecrated them. ¹¹He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them.^(MQ) ¹²He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed^(MR) him to consecrate him.^(MS) ¹³Then he brought Aaron’s sons^(MT) forward, put tunics^(MU) on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.^(MV)

¹⁴He then presented the bull^(MW) for the sin offering,^(MX) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.^(MY) ¹⁵Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood,^(MZ) and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar^(NA) to purify the altar.^(NB) He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it.^(NC) ¹⁶Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. ¹⁷But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines^(ND) he burned up outside the camp,^(NE) as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁸He then presented the ram^(NF) for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. ¹⁹Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. ²⁰He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat.^(NG) ²¹He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

²²He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination,^(NH) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.^(NI) ²³Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.^(NJ) ²⁴Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar.^(NK) ²⁵After that, he took the fat^(NL), the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. ²⁶And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord, he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf,^(NM) and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. ²⁷He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the Lord^(NN) as a wave offering. ²⁸Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. ²⁹Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram,^(NO) and waved it before the Lord as a wave offering, as the Lord commanded Moses.

³⁰Then Moses^(NP) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments^(NQ) and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated^(NR) Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.

³¹Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting^(NS) and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ ³²Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. ³³Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days.^(NT) ³⁴What has been done today was commanded by the Lord^(NU) to make atonement for you. ³⁵You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires,^(NV) so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”

³⁶So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.

The Priests Begin Their Ministry

9 On the eighth day^(NW) Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders^(NX) of Israel. ²He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for your sin offering^[u] and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the Lord. ³Then say to the Israelites: ‘Take a male goat^(NY) for a sin offering,^(NZ) a calf^(OA) and a lamb^(OB)—both a year old and without defect—for a burnt offering, ⁴and an ox^[v]^(OC) and a ram for a fellowship offering^(OD) to sacrifice before the Lord, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.^(OE)’”

⁵They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the Lord. ⁶Then Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord^(OF) may appear to you.”

⁷Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people;^(OG) sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.^(OH)”

⁸So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering^(OI) for himself. ⁹His sons brought the blood to him,^(OJ) and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar.^(OK) ¹⁰On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lord commanded Moses; ¹¹the flesh and the hide^(OL) he burned up outside the camp.^(OM)

¹²Then he slaughtered the burnt offering.^(ON) His sons handed him the blood,^(OO) and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. ¹³They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.^(OP) ¹⁴He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.^(OQ)

¹⁵Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people.^(OR) He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.

¹⁶He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way.^(OS) ¹⁷He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.^(OT)

¹⁸He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people.^(OU) His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. ¹⁹But the fat portions of the ox and the ram—the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver— ²⁰these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. ²¹Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the Lord as a wave offering,^(OV) as Moses commanded.

²²Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them.^(OW) And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.

²³Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting.^(OX) When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord^(OY) appeared to all the people. ²⁴Fire^(OZ) came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.^(PA)

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu^(PB) took their censers,^(PC) put fire in them^(PD) and added incense;^(PE) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,^(PF) contrary to his command.^(PG) ²So fire came out^(PH) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,^(PI) and they died before the Lord.^(PJ) ³Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

“‘Among those who approach me^(PK)
I will be proved holy;^(PL)
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.^(PM)’”

Aaron remained silent.

⁴Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,^(PN) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,^(PO) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,^(PP) away from the front of the sanctuary.^(PQ)” ⁵So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,^(PR) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

⁶Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,^(PS) “Do not let your hair become unkempt^[w]^(PT) and do not tear your clothes,^(PU) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.^(PV) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn^(PW) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. ⁷Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting^(PX) or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil^(PY) is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

⁸Then the Lord said to Aaron, ⁹“You and your sons are not to drink wine^(PZ) or other fermented drink^(QA) whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance^(QB) for the generations to come, ¹⁰so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,^(QC) ¹¹and so you can teach^(QD) the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.^(QE)”

¹²Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering^(QF) left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar,^(QG) for it is most holy. ¹³Eat it in the sanctuary area,^(QH) because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded.^(QI) ¹⁴But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast^(QJ) that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place;^(QK) they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings. ¹⁵The thigh^(QL) that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering.^(QM) This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.”

¹⁶When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering^[x]^(QN) and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, ¹⁷“Why didn’t you eat the sin offering^(QO) in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt^(QP) of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. ¹⁸Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place,^(QQ) you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.^(QR)”

²⁵And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering.

²⁶And he shall burn all his fat upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make an atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

²⁷And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;

²⁸Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned.

²⁹And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering.

³⁰And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar.

³¹And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the Lord; and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

³²And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish.

³³And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.

³⁴And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar:

³⁵And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the Lord: and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.

5 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

²Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.

³Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.

⁴Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.

⁵And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

⁶And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin.

⁷And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the Lord; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.

⁸And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off his head from his neck, but shall not divide it asunder:

⁹And he shall sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering upon the side of the altar; and the rest of the blood shall be wrung out at the bottom of the altar: it is a sin offering.

¹⁰And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹¹But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.

¹²Then shall he bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it, even a memorial thereof, and burn it on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the Lord: it is a sin offering.

¹³And the priest shall make an atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these, and it shall be forgiven him: and the remnant shall be the priest's, as a meat offering.

¹⁴And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁵If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering.

¹⁶And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹⁷And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.

¹⁸And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹⁹It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the Lord.

6 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the Lord, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour;

³Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:

⁴Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,

⁵Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.

⁶And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord, a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest:

⁷And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein.

⁸And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

⁹Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it.

¹⁰And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.

¹¹And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place.

¹²And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.

¹³The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.

¹⁴And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the Lord, before the altar.

¹⁵And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour, even the memorial of it, unto the Lord.

¹⁶And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it.

¹⁷It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering.

¹⁸All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the Lord made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.

¹⁹And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²⁰This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall offer unto the Lord in the day when he is anointed; the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meat offering perpetual, half of it in the morning, and half thereof at night.

²¹In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is baken, thou shalt bring it in: and the baken pieces of the meat offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the Lord.

²²And the priest of his sons that is anointed in his stead shall offer it: it is a statute for ever unto the Lord; it shall be wholly burnt.

²³For every meat offering for the priest shall be wholly burnt: it shall not be eaten.

²⁴And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²⁵Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the Lord: it is most holy.

²⁶The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it: in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation.

²⁷Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place.

²⁸But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken: and if it be sodden in a brasen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water.

²⁹All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy.

³⁰And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire.

7 Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it is most holy.

²In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle round about upon the altar.

³And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof; the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards,

⁴And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul that is above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away:

⁵And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the Lord: it is a trespass offering.

⁶Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy.

⁷As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering: there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it.

⁸And the priest that offereth any man's burnt offering, even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt offering which he hath offered.

⁹And all the meat offering that is baken in the oven, and all that is dressed in the fryingpan, and in the pan, shall be the priest's that offereth it.

¹⁰And every meat offering, mingled with oil, and dry, shall all the sons of Aaron have, one as much as another.

¹¹And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer unto the Lord.

¹²If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.

¹³Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.

¹⁴And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave offering unto the Lord, and it shall be the priest's that sprinkleth the blood of the peace offerings.

¹⁵And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall not leave any of it until the morning.

¹⁶But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow, or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offereth his sacrifice: and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be eaten:

¹⁷But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.

¹⁸And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.

¹⁹And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire: and as for the flesh, all that be clean shall eat thereof.

²⁰But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the Lord, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

²¹Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any abominable unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which pertain unto the Lord, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

²²And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²³Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.

²⁴And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.

²⁵For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord, even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.

²⁶Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

²⁷Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

²⁸And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²⁹Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, He that offereth the sacrifice of his peace offerings unto the Lord shall bring his oblation unto the Lord of the sacrifice of his peace offerings.

³⁰His own hands shall bring the offerings of the Lord made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before the Lord.

³¹And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar: but the breast shall be Aaron's and his sons'.

³²And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest for an heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.

³³He among the sons of Aaron, that offereth the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right shoulder for his part.

³⁴For the wave breast and the heave shoulder have I taken of the children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Israel.

³⁵This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron, and of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of the Lord made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto the Lord in the priest's office;

³⁶Which the Lord commanded to be given them of the children of Israel, in the day that he anointed them, by a statute for ever throughout their generations.

³⁷This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meat offering, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering, and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace offerings;

³⁸Which the Lord commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinai.

8 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread;

³And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

⁴And Moses did as the Lord commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

⁵And Moses said unto the congregation, This is the thing which the Lord commanded to be done.

⁶And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water.

⁷And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod, and bound it unto him therewith.

⁸And he put the breastplate upon him: also he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim.

⁹And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even upon his forefront, did he put the golden plate, the holy crown; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁰And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.

¹¹And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them.

¹²And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

¹³And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁴And he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering.

¹⁵And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon it.

¹⁶And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned it upon the altar.

¹⁷But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt with fire without the camp; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁸And he brought the ram for the burnt offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

¹⁹And he killed it; and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

²⁰And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses burnt the head, and the pieces, and the fat.

²¹And he washed the inwards and the legs in water; and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar: it was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet savour, and an offering made by fire unto the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moses.

²²And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

²³And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.

²⁴And he brought Aaron's sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

²⁵And he took the fat, and the rump, and all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder:

²⁶And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the Lord, he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder:

²⁷And he put all upon Aaron's hands, and upon his sons' hands, and waved them for a wave offering before the Lord.

²⁸And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were consecrations for a sweet savour: it is an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

²⁹And Moses took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before the Lord: for of the ram of consecration it was Moses' part; as the Lord commanded Moses.

³⁰And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

³¹And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it.

³²And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire.

³³And ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration be at an end: for seven days shall he consecrate you.

³⁴As he hath done this day, so the Lord hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.

³⁵Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the Lord, that ye die not: for so I am commanded.

³⁶So Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

9 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;

²And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord.

³And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying, Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;

⁴Also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord; and a meat offering mingled with oil: for to day the Lord will appear unto you.

⁵And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord.

⁶And Moses said, This is the thing which the Lord commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the Lord shall appear unto you.

⁷And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the Lord commanded.

⁸Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.

⁹And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar:

¹⁰But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹¹And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp.

¹²And he slew the burnt offering; and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar.

¹³And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar.

¹⁴And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.

¹⁵And he brought the people's offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first.

¹⁶And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it according to the manner.

¹⁷And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning.

¹⁸He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about,

¹⁹And the fat of the bullock and of the ram, the rump, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver:

²⁰And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar:

²¹And the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave offering before the Lord; as Moses commanded.

²²And Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people, and blessed them, and came down from offering of the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and peace offerings.

²³And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the people.

²⁴And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

10 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not.

²And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.

³Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the Lord spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

⁴And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

⁵So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said.

⁶And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord hath kindled.

⁷And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

⁸And the Lord spake unto Aaron, saying,

⁹Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

¹⁰And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;

¹¹And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

¹²And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy:

¹³And ye shall eat it in the holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the sacrifices of the Lord made by fire: for so I am commanded.

¹⁴And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they be thy due, and thy sons' due, which are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel.

¹⁵The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before the Lord; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, by a statute for ever; as the Lord hath commanded.

¹⁶And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying,

¹⁷Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord?

¹⁸Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.

¹⁹And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the Lord?

²⁰And when Moses heard that, he was content.

11 And the Lord spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,

²Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

³Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

⁴Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

⁵And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

⁶And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

⁷And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

⁸Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

⁹These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

¹⁰And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

¹¹They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

¹²Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

¹³And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

¹⁴And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;

¹⁵Every raven after his kind;

¹⁶And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

¹⁷And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

¹⁸And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,

¹⁹And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

²⁰All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

²¹Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;

²²Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.

²³But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

²⁴And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.

²⁵And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

²⁶The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.

²⁷And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.

²⁸And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.

²⁹These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind,

³⁰And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

³¹These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.

³²And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed.

³³And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.

³⁴Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.

³⁵And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean and shall be unclean unto you.

³⁶Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.

³⁷And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

³⁸But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.

³⁹And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.

⁴⁰And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

⁴¹And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

⁴²Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

⁴³Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

⁴⁴For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

⁴⁵For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

⁴⁶This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:

⁴⁷To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

12 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

³And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

⁴And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

⁵But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

⁶And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

⁷Who shall offer it before the Lord, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

⁸And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

13 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, saying,

²When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, a scab, or bright spot, and it be in the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosy; then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests:

³And the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of the flesh: and when the hair in the plague is turned white, and the plague in sight be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is a plague of leprosy: and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.

⁴If the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and in sight be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days:

⁵And the priest shall look on him the seventh day: and, behold, if the plague in his sight be at a stay, and the plague spread not in the skin; then the priest shall shut him up seven days more:

⁶And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day: and, behold, if the plague be somewhat dark, and the plague spread not in the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean: it is but a scab: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

⁷But if the scab spread much abroad in the skin, after that he hath been seen of the priest for his cleansing, he shall be seen of the priest again.

⁸And if the priest see that, behold, the scab spreadeth in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a leprosy.

⁹When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought unto the priest;

¹⁰And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the rising be white in the skin, and it have turned the hair white, and there be quick raw flesh in the rising;

¹¹It is an old leprosy in the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean, and shall not shut him up: for he is unclean.

¹²And if a leprosy break out abroad in the skin, and the leprosy cover all the skin of him that hath the plague from his head even to his foot, wheresoever the priest looketh;

¹³Then the priest shall consider: and, behold, if the leprosy have covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague: it is all turned white: he is clean.

¹⁴But when raw flesh appeareth in him, he shall be unclean.

¹⁵And the priest shall see the raw flesh, and pronounce him to be unclean: for the raw flesh is unclean: it is a leprosy.

¹⁶Or if the raw flesh turn again, and be changed unto white, he shall come unto the priest;

¹⁷And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the plague be turned into white; then the priest shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague: he is clean.

¹⁸The flesh also, in which, even in the skin thereof, was a boil, and is healed,

¹⁹And in the place of the boil there be a white rising, or a bright spot, white, and somewhat reddish, and it be shewed to the priest;

²⁰And if, when the priest seeth it, behold, it be in sight lower than the skin, and the hair thereof be turned white; the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague of leprosy broken out of the boil.

²¹But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hairs therein, and if it be not lower than the skin, but be somewhat dark; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:

²²And if it spread much abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague.

²³But if the bright spot stay in his place, and spread not, it is a burning boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

²⁴Or if there be any flesh, in the skin whereof there is a hot burning, and the quick flesh that burneth have a white bright spot, somewhat reddish, or white;

²⁵Then the priest shall look upon it: and, behold, if the hair in the bright spot be turned white, and it be in sight deeper than the skin; it is a leprosy broken out of the burning: wherefore the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy.

²⁶But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hair in the bright spot, and it be no lower than the other skin, but be somewhat dark; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:

²⁷And the priest shall look upon him the seventh day: and if it be spread much abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy.

²⁸And if the bright spot stay in his place, and spread not in the skin, but it be somewhat dark; it is a rising of the burning, and the priest shall pronounce him clean: for it is an inflammation of the burning.

²⁹If a man or woman have a plague upon the head or the beard;

³⁰Then the priest shall see the plague: and, behold, if it be in sight deeper than the skin; and there be in it a yellow thin hair; then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a dry scall, even a leprosy upon the head or beard.

³¹And if the priest look on the plague of the scall, and, behold, it be not in sight deeper than the skin, and that there is no black hair in it; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague of the scall seven days:

³²And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the plague: and, behold, if the scall spread not, and there be in it no yellow hair, and the scall be not in sight deeper than the skin;

³³He shall be shaven, but the scall shall he not shave; and the priest shall shut up him that hath the scall seven days more:

³⁴And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the scall: and, behold, if the scall be not spread in the skin, nor be in sight deeper than the skin; then the priest shall pronounce him clean: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

³⁵But if the scall spread much in the skin after his cleansing;

³⁶Then the priest shall look on him: and, behold, if the scall be spread in the skin, the priest shall not seek for yellow hair; he is unclean.

³⁷But if the scall be in his sight at a stay, and that there is black hair grown up therein; the scall is healed, he is clean: and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

³⁸If a man also or a woman have in the skin of their flesh bright spots, even white bright spots;

³⁹Then the priest shall look: and, behold, if the bright spots in the skin of their flesh be darkish white; it is a freckled spot that groweth in the skin; he is clean.

⁴⁰And the man whose hair is fallen off his head, he is bald; yet is he clean.

⁴¹And he that hath his hair fallen off from the part of his head toward his face, he is forehead bald: yet is he clean.

⁴²And if there be in the bald head, or bald forehead, a white reddish sore; it is a leprosy sprung up in his bald head, or his bald forehead.

⁴³Then the priest shall look upon it: and, behold, if the rising of the sore be white reddish in his bald head, or in his bald forehead, as the leprosy appeareth in the skin of the flesh;

⁴⁴He is a leprous man, he is unclean: the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean; his plague is in his head.

⁴⁵And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.

⁴⁶All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.

⁴⁷The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it be a woollen garment, or a linen garment;

⁴⁸Whether it be in the warp, or woof; of linen, or of woollen; whether in a skin, or in any thing made of skin;

⁴⁹And if the plague be greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a plague of leprosy, and shall be shewed unto the priest:

⁵⁰And the priest shall look upon the plague, and shut up it that hath the plague seven days:

⁵¹And he shall look on the plague on the seventh day: if the plague be spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in a skin, or in any work that is made of skin; the plague is a fretting leprosy; it is unclean.

⁵²He shall therefore burn that garment, whether warp or woof, in woollen or in linen, or any thing of skin, wherein the plague is: for it is a fretting leprosy; it shall be burnt in the fire.

⁵³And if the priest shall look, and, behold, the plague be not spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin;

⁵⁴Then the priest shall command that they wash the thing wherein the plague is, and he shall shut it up seven days more:

⁵⁵And the priest shall look on the plague, after that it is washed: and, behold, if the plague have not changed his colour, and the plague be not spread; it is unclean; thou shalt burn it in the fire; it is fret inward, whether it be bare within or without.

⁵⁶And if the priest look, and, behold, the plague be somewhat dark after the washing of it; then he shall rend it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or out of the woof:

⁵⁷And if it appear still in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a spreading plague: thou shalt burn that wherein the plague is with fire.

⁵⁸And the garment, either warp, or woof, or whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean.

⁵⁹This is the law of the plague of leprosy in a garment of woollen or linen, either in the warp, or woof, or any thing of skins, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean.

14 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest:

³And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper;

⁴Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:

⁵And the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water:

⁶As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water:

⁷And he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose into the open field.

⁸And he that is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and wash himself in water, that he may be clean: and after that he shall come into the camp, and shall tarry abroad out of his tent seven days.

⁹But it shall be on the seventh day, that he shall shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair he shall shave off: and he shall wash his clothes, also he shall wash his flesh in water, and he shall be clean.

¹⁰And on the eighth day he shall take two he lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish, and three tenth deals of fine flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and one log of oil.

¹¹And the priest that maketh him clean shall present the man that is to be made clean, and those things, before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

¹²And the priest shall take one he lamb, and offer him for a trespass offering, and the log of oil, and wave them for a wave offering before the Lord:

¹³And he shall slay the lamb in the place where he shall kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the holy place: for as the sin offering is the priest's, so is the trespass offering: it is most holy:

¹⁴And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot:

¹⁵And the priest shall take some of the log of oil, and pour it into the palm of his own left hand:

¹⁶And the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand, and shall sprinkle of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord:

¹⁷And of the rest of the oil that is in his hand shall the priest put upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the trespass offering:

¹⁸And the remnant of the oil that is in the priest's hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed: and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord.

¹⁹And the priest shall offer the sin offering, and make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed from his uncleanness; and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering:

²⁰And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the meat offering upon the altar: and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and he shall be clean.

²¹And if he be poor, and cannot get so much; then he shall take one lamb for a trespass offering to be waved, to make an atonement for him, and one tenth deal of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering, and a log of oil;

²²And two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, such as he is able to get; and the one shall be a sin offering, and the other a burnt offering.

²³And he shall bring them on the eighth day for his cleansing unto the priest, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, before the Lord.

²⁴And the priest shall take the lamb of the trespass offering, and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the Lord:

²⁵And he shall kill the lamb of the trespass offering, and the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot:

²⁶And the priest shall pour of the oil into the palm of his own left hand:

²⁷And the priest shall sprinkle with his right finger some of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before the Lord:

²⁸And the priest shall put of the oil that is in his hand upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the place of the blood of the trespass offering:

²⁹And the rest of the oil that is in the priest's hand he shall put upon the head of him that is to be cleansed, to make an atonement for him before the Lord.

³⁰And he shall offer the one of the turtledoves, or of the young pigeons, such as he can get;

³¹Even such as he is able to get, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, with the meat offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed before the Lord.

³²This is the law of him in whom is the plague of leprosy, whose hand is not able to get that which pertaineth to his cleansing.

³³And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

³⁴When ye be come into the land of Canaan, which I give to you for a possession, and I put the plague of leprosy in a house of the land of your possession;

³⁵And he that owneth the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, It seemeth to me there is as it were a plague in the house:

³⁶Then the priest shall command that they empty the house, before the priest go into it to see the plague, that all that is in the house be not made unclean: and afterward the priest shall go in to see the house:

³⁷And he shall look on the plague, and, behold, if the plague be in the walls of the house with hollow strakes, greenish or reddish, which in sight are lower than the wall;

³⁸Then the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house, and shut up the house seven days:

³⁹And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house;

⁴⁰Then the priest shall command that they take away the stones in which the plague is, and they shall cast them into an unclean place without the city:

⁴¹And he shall cause the house to be scraped within round about, and they shall pour out the dust that they scrape off without the city into an unclean place:

⁴²And they shall take other stones, and put them in the place of those stones; and he shall take other morter, and shall plaister the house.

⁴³And if the plague come again, and break out in the house, after that he hath taken away the stones, and after he hath scraped the house, and after it is plaistered;

⁴⁴Then the priest shall come and look, and, behold, if the plague be spread in the house, it is a fretting leprosy in the house; it is unclean.

⁴⁵And he shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the morter of the house; and he shall carry them forth out of the city into an unclean place.

⁴⁶Moreover he that goeth into the house all the while that it is shut up shall be unclean until the even.

⁴⁷And he that lieth in the house shall wash his clothes; and he that eateth in the house shall wash his clothes.

⁴⁸And if the priest shall come in, and look upon it, and, behold, the plague hath not spread in the house, after the house was plaistered: then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed.

⁴⁹And he shall take to cleanse the house two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:

⁵⁰And he shall kill the one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water:

⁵¹And he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times:

⁵²And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet:

⁵³But he shall let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be clean.

⁵⁴This is the law for all manner of plague of leprosy, and scall,

⁵⁵And for the leprosy of a garment, and of a house,

⁵⁶And for a rising, and for a scab, and for a bright spot:

⁵⁷To teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean: this is the law of leprosy.

15 And the Lord spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When any man hath a running issue out of his flesh, because of his issue he is unclean.

³And this shall be his uncleanness in his issue: whether his flesh run with his issue, or his flesh be stopped from his issue, it is his uncleanness.

⁴Every bed, whereon he lieth that hath the issue, is unclean: and every thing, whereon he sitteth, shall be unclean.

⁵And whosoever toucheth his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

⁶And he that sitteth on any thing whereon he sat that hath the issue shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

⁷And he that toucheth the flesh of him that hath the issue shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

⁸And if he that hath the issue spit upon him that is clean; then he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

⁹And what saddle soever he rideth upon that hath the issue shall be unclean.

¹⁰And whosoever toucheth any thing that was under him shall be unclean until the even: and he that beareth any of those things shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

¹¹And whomsoever he toucheth that hath the issue, and hath not rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

¹²And the vessel of earth, that he toucheth which hath the issue, shall be broken: and every vessel of wood shall be rinsed in water.

¹³And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.

¹⁴And on the eighth day he shall take to him two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, and come before the Lord unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and give them unto the priest:

¹⁵And the priest shall offer them, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord for his issue.

¹⁶And if any man's seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even.

¹⁷And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even.

¹⁸The woman also with whom man shall lie with seed of copulation, they shall both bathe themselves in water, and be unclean until the even.

¹⁹And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even.

²⁰And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean.

²¹And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

²²And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

²³And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even.

²⁴And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean.

²⁵And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.

²⁶Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation.

²⁷And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

²⁸But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.

²⁹And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

³⁰And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the Lord for the issue of her uncleanness.

³¹Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.

³²This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith;

³³And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean.

16 And the Lord spake unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the Lord, and died;

²And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

³Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.

⁴He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.

⁵And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

⁶And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house.

⁷And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

⁸And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

⁹And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.

¹⁰But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

¹¹And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:

¹²And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail:

¹³And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:

¹⁴And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

¹⁵Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:

¹⁶And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

¹⁷And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

¹⁸And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the Lord, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.

¹⁹And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

²⁰And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:

²¹And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:

²²And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

²³And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there:

²⁴And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people.

²⁵And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar.

²⁶And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp.

²⁷And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.

²⁸And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.

²⁹And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:

³⁰For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord.

³¹It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.

³²And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:

³³And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.

The Grain Offering

And he shall pour oil on it, and put ^(W)frankincense on it. ²He shall bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests, one of whom shall take from it his handful of fine flour and oil with all the frankincense. And the priest shall burn ^(X)it as a memorial on the altar, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord. ³^(Y)The rest of the grain offering shall be Aaron’s and his ^(Z)sons’. ^(AA)It is most holy of the offerings to the Lord made by fire.

⁴‘And if you bring as an offering a grain offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers ^(AB)anointed^[d] with oil. ⁵But if your offering is a grain offering baked in a ^[e]pan, it shall be of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil. ⁶You shall break it in pieces and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering.

⁷‘If your offering is a grain offering baked in a ^(AC)covered pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. ⁸You shall bring the grain offering that is made of these things to the Lord. The Sin Offering

4 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ^(BI)‘If a person sins ^[h]unintentionally against any of the commandments of the Lord in anything which ought not to be done, and does any of them, ³^(BJ)if the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, then let him offer to the Lord for his sin which he has sinned ^(BK)a young bull without blemish as a ^(BL)sin offering. ⁴He shall bring the bull ^(BM)to the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord, lay his hand on the bull’s head, and kill the bull before the Lord. ⁵Then the anointed priest ^(BN)shall take some of the bull’s blood and bring it to the tabernacle of meeting. ⁶The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord, in front of the ^(BO)veil of the sanctuary. ⁷And the priest shall ^(BP)put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the Lord, which is in the tabernacle of meeting; and he shall pour ^(BQ)the remaining blood of the bull at the base of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ⁸He shall take from it all the fat of the bull as the sin offering. The Trespass Offering

5 ‘If a person sins in ^(CS)hearing the utterance of an oath, and is a witness, whether he has seen or known of the matter—if he does not tell it, he ^(CT)bears ^[o]guilt.

²‘Or ^(CU)if a person touches any unclean thing, whether it is the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean livestock, or the carcass of unclean creeping things, and he is unaware of it, he also shall be unclean and ^(CV)guilty. ³Or if he touches ^(CW)human uncleanness—whatever uncleanness with which a man may be defiled, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty.

⁴‘Or if a person ^[p]swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips ^(CX)to do evil or ^(CY)to do good, whatever it is that a man may pronounce by an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters.

⁵‘And it shall be, when he is guilty in any of these matters, that he shall ^(CZ)confess that he has sinned in that thing; ⁶and he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord for his sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin.

⁷^(DA)‘If he is not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring to the Lord, for his trespass which he has committed, two ^(DB)turtledoves or two young pigeons: one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. ⁸And he shall bring them to the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and ^(DC)wring off its head from its neck, but shall not divide it ^[q]completely. ⁹Then he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, and the ^(DD)rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering. ¹⁰And he shall offer the second as a burnt offering according to the ^(DE)prescribed manner. So ^(DF)the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin which he has committed, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹¹‘But if he is ^(DG)not able to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he who sinned shall bring for his offering one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a sin offering. ^(DH)He shall put no oil on it, nor shall he put frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering. ¹²Then he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it ^(DI)as a memorial portion, and burn it on the altar ^(DJ)according to the offerings made by fire to the Lord. It is a sin offering. ¹³^(DK)The priest shall make atonement for him, ^[r]for his sin that he has committed in any of these matters; and it shall be forgiven him. ^(DL)The rest shall be the priest’s as a grain offering.’ ”

Offerings with Restitution

¹⁴Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ¹⁵^(DM)“If a person commits a trespass, and sins unintentionally in regard to the holy things of the Lord, then ^(DN)he shall bring to the Lord as his trespass offering a ram without blemish from the flocks, with your valuation in shekels of silver according to ^(DO)the shekel of the sanctuary, as a trespass offering. ¹⁶And he shall make restitution for the harm that he has done in regard to the holy thing, ^(DP)and shall add one-fifth to it and give it to the priest. ^(DQ)So the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹⁷“If a person sins, and commits any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord, ^(DR)though he does not know it, yet he is ^(DS)guilty and shall bear his ^[s]iniquity. ¹⁸^(DT)And he shall bring to the priest a ram without blemish from the flock, with your valuation, as a trespass offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him regarding his ignorance in which he erred and did not know it, and it shall be forgiven him. ¹⁹It is a trespass offering; ^(DU)he has certainly trespassed against the Lord.”

Laws About the Burnt Offering, the Grain Offering, and the Sin Offering

6 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²“If a person sins and ^(DV)commits a trespass against the Lord by ^(DW)lying^[t] to his neighbor about ^(DX)what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or about ^[u]a pledge, or about a robbery, or if he has ^(DY)extorted from his neighbor, ³or if he ^(DZ)has found what was lost and lies concerning it, and ^(EA)swears falsely—in any one of these things that a man may do in which he sins: ⁴then it shall be, because he has sinned and is guilty, that he shall ^[v]restore ^(EB)what he has stolen, or the thing which he has extorted, or what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or the lost thing which he found, ⁵or all that about which he has sworn falsely. He shall ^(EC)restore its full value, add one-fifth more to it, and give it to whomever it belongs, on the day of his trespass offering. ⁶And he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord, ^(ED)a ram without blemish from the flock, with your ^[w]valuation, as a trespass offering, to the priest. ⁷^(EE)So the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, and he shall be forgiven for any one of these things that he may have done in which he trespasses.”

The Law of the Burnt Offering

⁸Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ⁹“Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the ^(EF)law of the burnt offering: The burnt offering shall be on the hearth upon the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. ¹⁰^(EG)And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen trousers he shall put on his body, and take up the ashes of the burnt offering which the fire has consumed on the altar, and he shall put them ^(EH)beside the altar. ¹¹Then ^(EI)he shall take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp ^(EJ)to a clean place. ¹²And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it ^(EK)the fat of the peace offerings. ¹³A fire shall always be burning on the ^(EL)altar; it shall never go out.

The Law of the Grain Offering

¹⁴‘This is the law of the grain offering: The sons of Aaron shall offer it on the altar before the Lord. ¹⁵He shall take from it his handful of the fine flour of the grain offering, with its oil, and all the frankincense which is on the grain offering, and shall burn it on the altar for a sweet aroma, as a memorial to the Lord. ¹⁶And the remainder of it Aaron and his sons shall eat; with unleavened bread it shall be eaten in a holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of meeting they shall eat it. ¹⁷It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their ^[x]portion of My offerings made by fire; it is most holy, like the sin offering and the ^(EM)trespass offering. ¹⁸^(EN)All the males among the children of Aaron may eat it. ^(EO)It shall be a statute forever in your generations concerning the offerings made by fire to the Lord. ^(EP)Everyone who touches them must be holy.’ ”

¹⁹And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁰^(EQ)“This is the offering of Aaron and his sons, which they shall offer to the Lord, beginning on the day when he is anointed: one-tenth of an ^(ER)ephah of fine flour as a daily grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it at night. ²¹It shall be made in a ^(ES)pan with oil. When it is mixed, you shall bring it in. The baked pieces of the grain offering you shall offer for a ^[y]sweet aroma to the Lord. ²²The priest from among his sons, ^(ET)who is anointed in his place, shall offer it. It is a statute forever to the Lord. ^(EU)It shall be ^[z]wholly burned. ²³For every grain offering for the priest shall be wholly burned. It shall not be eaten.”

The Law of the Sin Offering

²⁴Also the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁵“Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the sin offering: ^(EV)In the place where the burnt offering is killed, the sin offering shall be killed before the Lord. It is most holy. ²⁶^(EW)The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it. In a holy place it shall be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of meeting. ²⁷^(EX)Everyone who touches its flesh ^[aa]must be holy. And when its blood is sprinkled on any garment, you shall wash that on which it was sprinkled, in a holy place. ²⁸But the earthen vessel in which it is boiled ^(EY)shall be broken. And if it is boiled in a bronze pot, it shall be both scoured and rinsed in water. ²⁹All the males among the priests may eat it. It is most holy. ³⁰^(EZ)But no sin offering from which any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of meeting, to make atonement in ^[ab]the holy ^(FA)place, shall be ^(FB)eaten. It shall be ^(FC)burned in the fire.

The Law of the Trespass Offering

7 ‘Likewise ^(FD)this is the law of the trespass offering (it is most holy): ²In the place where they kill the burnt offering they shall kill the trespass offering. And its blood he shall sprinkle all around on the altar. ³And he shall offer from it all its fat. The fat tail and the fat that covers the entrails, ⁴the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; ⁵and the priest shall burn them on the altar as an offering made by fire to the Lord. It is a trespass offering. ⁶^(FE)Every male among the priests may eat it. It shall be eaten in a holy place. ^(FF)It is most holy. ⁷^(FG)The trespass offering is like the sin offering; there is one law for them both: the priest who makes atonement with it shall have it. ⁸And the priest who offers anyone’s burnt offering, that priest shall have for himself the skin of the burnt offering which he has offered. ⁹Also ^(FH)every grain offering that is baked in the oven and all that is prepared in the covered pan, or ^[ac]in a pan, shall be the priest’s who offers it. ¹⁰Every grain offering, whether mixed with oil or dry, shall belong to all the sons of Aaron, to one as much as the other.

The Law of Peace Offerings

¹¹^(FI)‘This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which he shall offer to the Lord: ¹²If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer, with the sacrifice of thanksgiving, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers ^(FJ)anointed with oil, or cakes of blended flour mixed with oil. ¹³Besides the cakes, as his offering he shall offer ^(FK)leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offering. ¹⁴And from it he shall offer one cake from each offering as a heave offering to the Lord. ^(FL)It shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offering.

¹⁵^(FM)‘The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day it is offered. He shall not leave any of it until morning. ¹⁶But ^(FN)if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice; but on the next day the remainder of it also may be eaten; ¹⁷the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day must be burned with fire. ¹⁸And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering is eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, nor shall it be ^(FO)imputed to him; it shall be an ^(FP)abomination to him who offers it, and the person who eats of it shall bear ^[ad]guilt.

¹⁹‘The flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten. It shall be burned with fire. And as for the clean flesh, all who are ^[ae]clean may eat of it. ²⁰But the person who eats the flesh of the sacrifice of the peace offering that belongs to the ^(FQ)Lord, ^(FR)while he is unclean, that person ^(FS)shall be cut off from his people. ²¹Moreover the person who touches any unclean thing, such as ^(FT)human uncleanness, an ^(FU)unclean animal, or any ^(FV)abominable^[af] unclean thing, and who eats the flesh of the sacrifice of the peace offering that belongs to the Lord, that person ^(FW)shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

Fat and Blood May Not Be Eaten

²²And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²³“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ^(FX)‘You shall not eat any fat, of ox or sheep or goat. ²⁴And the fat of an animal that dies naturally, and the fat of what is torn by wild beasts, may be used in any other way; but you shall by no means eat it. ²⁵For whoever eats the fat of the animal of which men offer an offering made by fire to the Lord, the person who eats it shall be cut off from his people. ²⁶^(FY)Moreover you shall not eat any blood in any of your dwellings, whether of bird or beast. ²⁷Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

The Portion of Aaron and His Sons

²⁸Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁹“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ^(FZ)‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offering to the Lord shall bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his peace offering. ³⁰^(GA)His own hands shall bring the offerings made by fire to the Lord. The fat with the breast he shall bring, that the ^(GB)breast may be waved as a wave offering before the Lord. ³¹^(GC)And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the ^(GD)breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. ³²^(GE)Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. ³³He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part. ³⁴For ^(GF)the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’ ”

³⁵This is the consecrated portion for Aaron and his sons, from the offerings made by fire to the Lord, on the day when Moses presented them to ^[ag]minister to the Lord as priests. ³⁶The Lord commanded this to be given to them by the children of Israel, ^(GG)on the day that He anointed them, by a statute forever throughout their generations.

³⁷This is the law ^(GH)of the burnt offering, ^(GI)the grain offering, ^(GJ)the sin offering, ^(GK)the trespass offering, ^(GL)the consecrations, and ^(GM)the sacrifice of the peace offering, ³⁸which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day when He commanded the children of Israel ^(GN)to offer their offerings to the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai.

Aaron and His Sons Consecrated^(GO)

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²^(GP)“Take Aaron and his sons with him, and ^(GQ)the garments, ^(GR)the anointing oil, a ^(GS)bull as the sin offering, two ^(GT)rams, and a basket of unleavened bread; ³and gather all the congregation together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.”

⁴So Moses did as the Lord commanded him. And the congregation was gathered together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ⁵And Moses said to the congregation, “This is what the Lord commanded to be done.”

⁶Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons and ^(GU)washed them with water. ⁷And he ^(GV)put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the intricately woven band of the ephod, and with it tied the ephod on him. ⁸Then he put the breastplate on him, and he ^(GW)put the ^[ah]Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate. ⁹^(GX)And he put the turban on his head. Also on the turban, on its front, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

¹⁰^(GY)Also Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. ¹¹He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the laver and its base, to ^[ai]consecrate them. ¹²And he ^(GZ)poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.

¹³^(HA)Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons and put tunics on them, girded them with sashes, and put ^[aj]hats on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

¹⁴^(HB)And he brought the bull for the sin offering. Then Aaron and his sons ^(HC)laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering, ¹⁵and Moses killed it. ^(HD)Then he took the blood, and put some on the horns of the altar all around with his finger, and purified the altar. And he poured the blood at the base of the altar, and consecrated it, to make ^[ak]atonement for it. ¹⁶^(HE)Then he took all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat, and Moses burned them on the altar. ¹⁷But the bull, its hide, its flesh, and its offal, he burned with fire outside the camp, as the Lord ^(HF)had commanded Moses.

¹⁸^(HG)Then he brought the ram as the burnt offering. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, ¹⁹and Moses killed it. Then he sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. ²⁰And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses ^(HH)burned the head, the pieces, and the fat. ²¹Then he washed the entrails and the legs in water. And Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a ^[al]sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord, ^(HI)as the Lord had commanded Moses.

²²And ^(HJ)he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, ²³and Moses killed it. Also he took some of ^(HK)its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. ²⁴Then he brought Aaron’s sons. And Moses put some of the ^(HL)blood on the tips of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. And Moses sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. ²⁵^(HM)Then he took the fat and the fat tail, all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh; ²⁶^(HN)and from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one unleavened cake, a cake of bread anointed with oil, and one wafer, and put them on the fat and on the right thigh; ²⁷and he put all these ^(HO)in Aaron’s hands and in his sons’ hands, and waved them as a wave offering before the Lord. ²⁸^(HP)Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar, on the burnt offering. They were consecration offerings for a sweet aroma. That was an offering made by fire to the Lord. ²⁹And ^(HQ)Moses took the ^(HR)breast and waved it as a wave offering before the Lord. It was Moses’ ^(HS)part of the ram of consecration, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

³⁰Then ^(HT)Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, his sons, and the garments of his sons with him.

³¹And Moses said to Aaron and his sons, ^(HU)“Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of consecration offerings, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ ³²^(HV)What remains of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn with fire. ³³And you shall not go outside the door of the tabernacle of meeting for seven days, until the days of your consecration are ended. For ^(HW)seven days he shall consecrate you. ³⁴^(HX)As he has done this day, so the Lord has commanded to do, to make atonement for you. ³⁵Therefore you shall stay at the door of the tabernacle of meeting day and night for seven days, and ^(HY)keep the ^[am]charge of the Lord, so that you may not die; for so I have been commanded.” ³⁶So Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.

The Priestly Ministry Begins

9 It came to pass on the ^(HZ)eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. ²And he said to Aaron, “Take for yourself a young ^(IA)bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. ³And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying, ^(IB)‘Take a kid of the goats as a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering, ⁴also a bull and a ram as peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord, and ^(IC)a grain offering mixed with oil; for ^(ID)today the Lord will appear to you.’ ”

⁵So they brought what Moses commanded before the tabernacle of meeting. And all the congregation drew near and stood ^[an]before the Lord. ⁶Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord commanded you to do, and the glory of the Lord will appear to you.” ⁷And Moses said to Aaron, “Go to the altar, ^(IE)offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself and for the people. ^(IF)Offer the offering of the people, and make atonement for them, as the Lord commanded.”

⁸Aaron therefore went to the altar and killed the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. ⁹Then the sons of Aaron brought the blood to him. And he dipped his finger in the blood, put it on the horns of the altar, and poured the blood at the base of the altar. ¹⁰^(IG)But the fat, the kidneys, and the fatty lobe from the liver of the sin offering he burned on the altar, as the Lord had commanded Moses. ¹¹^(IH)The flesh and the hide he burned with fire outside the camp.

¹²And he killed the burnt offering; and Aaron’s sons presented to him the blood, ^(II)which he sprinkled all around on the altar. ¹³^(IJ)Then they presented the burnt offering to him, with its pieces and head, and he burned them on the altar. ¹⁴^(IK)And he washed the entrails and the legs, and burned them with the burnt offering on the altar.

¹⁵^(IL)Then he brought the people’s offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and killed it and offered it for sin, like the first one. ¹⁶And he brought the burnt offering and offered it ^(IM)according to the ^[ao]prescribed manner. ¹⁷Then he brought the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar, ^(IN)besides the burnt sacrifice of the morning.

¹⁸He also killed the bull and the ram as ^(IO)sacrifices of peace offerings, which were for the people. And Aaron’s sons presented to him the blood, which he sprinkled all around on the altar, ¹⁹and the fat from the bull and the ram—the fatty tail, what covers the entrails and the kidneys, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver; ²⁰and they put the fat on the breasts. ^(IP)Then he burned the fat on the altar; ²¹but the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved ^(IQ)as a wave offering before the Lord, as Moses had commanded.

²²Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, ^(IR)blessed them, and came down from offering the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings. ²³And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the people. Then the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people, ²⁴and ^(IS)fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they ^(IT)shouted and fell on their ^(IU)faces.

The Profane Fire of Nadab and Abihu

10 Then ^(IV)Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, ^(IW)each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered ^(IX)profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. ²So ^(IY)fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. ³And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying:

‘By those ^(IZ)who come near Me
I must be regarded as holy;
And before all the people
I must be glorified.’ ”

So Aaron held his peace.

⁴Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near, ^(JA)carry your brethren from ^[ap]before the sanctuary out of the camp.” ⁵So they went near and carried them by their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said.

⁶And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons, “Do not ^[aq]uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, lest you die, and ^(JB)wrath come upon all the people. But let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, ^[ar]bewail the burning which the Lord has kindled. ⁷^(JC)You shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die, ^(JD)for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you.” And they did according to the word of Moses.

Conduct Prescribed for Priests

⁸Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying: ⁹^(JE)“Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, ¹⁰that you may ^(JF)distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, ¹¹^(JG)and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.”

¹²And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons who were left: ^(JH)“Take the grain offering that remains of the offerings made by fire to the Lord, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; ^(JI)for it is most holy. ¹³You shall eat it in a ^(JJ)holy place, because it is your ^[as]due and your sons’ due, of the sacrifices made by fire to the Lord; for ^(JK)so I have been commanded. ¹⁴^(JL)The breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering you shall eat in a clean place, you, your sons, and your ^(JM)daughters with you; for they are your due and your sons’ ^(JN)due, which are given from the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel. ¹⁵^(JO)The thigh of the heave offering and the breast of the wave offering they shall bring with the offerings of fat made by fire, to offer as a wave offering before the Lord. And it shall be yours and your sons’ with you, by a statute forever, as the Lord has commanded.”

¹⁶Then Moses made careful inquiry about ^(JP)the goat of the sin offering, and there it was—burned up. And he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left, saying, ¹⁷^(JQ)“Why have you not eaten the sin offering in a holy place, since it is most holy, and God has given it to you to bear ^(JR)the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord? ¹⁸See! ^(JS)Its blood was not brought inside ^[at]the holy place; indeed you should have eaten it in a holy place, ^(JT)as I commanded.”

¹⁹And Aaron said to Moses, “Look, ^(JU)this day they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, and such things have befallen me! If I had eaten the sin offering today, ^(JV)would it have been accepted in the sight of the Lord?” ²⁰So when Moses heard that, he was content.

Foods Permitted and Forbidden^(JW)

11 Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, ²“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ^(JX)‘These are the animals which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth: ³Among the animals, whatever divides the hoof, having cloven hooves and chewing the cud—that you may eat. ⁴Nevertheless these you shall ^(JY)not eat among those that chew the cud or those that have cloven hooves: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is ^[au]unclean to you; ⁵the ^[av]rock hyrax, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is ^[aw]unclean to you; ⁶the hare, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you; ⁷and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, ^(JZ)is unclean to you. ⁸Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. ^(KA)They are unclean to you.

⁹^(KB)‘These you may eat of all that are in the water: whatever in the water has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers—that you may eat. ¹⁰But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are ^[ax]an ^(KC)abomination to you. ¹¹They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination. ¹²Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales—that shall be an abomination to you.

¹³^(KD)‘And these you shall regard as an abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard, ¹⁴the kite, and the falcon after its kind; ¹⁵every raven after its kind, ¹⁶the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the sea gull, and the hawk after its kind; ¹⁷the little owl, the fisher owl, and the screech owl; ¹⁸the white owl, the jackdaw, and the carrion vulture; ¹⁹the stork, the heron after its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.

²⁰‘All flying insects that creep on all fours shall be an abomination to you. ²¹Yet these you may eat of every flying insect that creeps on all fours: those which have jointed legs above their feet with which to leap on the earth. ²²These you may eat: ^(KE)the locust after its kind, the destroying locust after its kind, the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. ²³But all other flying insects which have four feet shall be an abomination to you.

Unclean Animals

²⁴‘By these you shall become ^[ay]unclean; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until evening; ²⁵whoever carries part of the carcass of any of them ^(KF)shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening: ²⁶The carcass of any animal which divides the foot, but is not cloven-hoofed or does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches it shall be unclean. ²⁷And whatever goes on its paws, among all kinds of animals that go on all fours, those are unclean to you. Whoever touches any such carcass shall be unclean until evening. ²⁸Whoever carries any such carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. It is unclean to you.

²⁹‘These also shall be unclean to you among the creeping things that creep on the earth: the mole, ^(KG)the mouse, and the large lizard after its kind; ³⁰the gecko, the monitor lizard, the sand reptile, the sand lizard, and the chameleon. ³¹These are unclean to you among all that creep. Whoever ^(KH)touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. ³²Anything on which any of them falls, when they are dead shall be ^[az]unclean, whether it is any item of wood or clothing or skin or sack, whatever item it is, in which any work is done, ^(KI)it must be put in water. And it shall be unclean until evening; then it shall be clean. ³³Any ^(KJ)earthen vessel into which any of them falls ^(KK)you shall break; and whatever is in it shall be unclean: ³⁴in such a vessel, any edible food upon which water falls becomes unclean, and any drink that may be drunk from it becomes unclean. ³⁵And everything on which a part of any such carcass falls shall be unclean; whether it is an oven or cooking stove, it shall be broken down; for they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you. ³⁶Nevertheless a spring or a cistern, in which there is plenty of water, shall be clean, but whatever touches any such carcass becomes unclean. ³⁷And if a part of any such carcass falls on any planting seed which is to be sown, it remains clean. ³⁸But if water is put on the seed, and if a part of any such carcass falls on it, it becomes ^[ba]unclean to you.

³⁹‘And if any animal which you may eat dies, he who touches its carcass shall be ^(KL)unclean until evening. ⁴⁰^(KM)He who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. He also who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.

⁴¹‘And every creeping thing that creeps on the earth shall be ^[bb]an abomination. It shall not be eaten. ⁴²Whatever crawls on its belly, whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet among all creeping things that creep on the earth—these you shall not eat, for they are an abomination. ⁴³^(KN)You shall not make ^[bc]yourselves ^[bd]abominable with any creeping thing that creeps; nor shall you make yourselves unclean with them, lest you be defiled by them. ⁴⁴For I am the Lord your ^(KO)God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and ^(KP)you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth. ⁴⁵^(KQ)For I am the Lord who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. ^(KR)You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

⁴⁶‘This is the law ^[be]of the animals and the birds and every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth, ⁴⁷^(KS)to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.’ ”

The Ritual After Childbirth^(KT)

12 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a ^(KU)woman has conceived, and borne a male child, then ^(KV)she shall be ^[bf]unclean seven days; ^(KW)as in the days of her customary impurity she shall be unclean. ³And on the ^(KX)eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. ⁴She shall then continue in the blood of her purification thirty-three days. She shall not touch any ^[bg]hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are fulfilled.

⁵‘But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her customary impurity, and she shall continue in the blood of her purification sixty-six days.

⁶^(KY)‘When the days of her purification are fulfilled, whether for a son or a daughter, she shall bring to the priest a ^(KZ)lamb ^[bh]of the first year as a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove as a ^(LA)sin offering, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ⁷Then he shall offer it before the Lord, and make ^[bi]atonement for her. And she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who has borne a male or a female.

⁸^(LB)‘And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons—one as a burnt offering and the other as a sin offering. ^(LC)So the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be ^[bj]clean.’ ”

The Law Concerning Leprosy

13 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: ²“When a man has on the skin of his body a swelling, ^(LD)a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes on the skin of his body like a ^[bk]leprous sore, ^(LE)then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests. ³The priest shall examine the sore on the skin of the body; and if the hair on the sore has turned white, and the sore appears to be deeper than the skin of his body, it is a leprous sore. Then the priest shall examine him, and pronounce him ^[bl]unclean. ⁴But if the bright spot is white on the skin of his body, and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and its hair has not turned white, then the priest shall isolate the one who has the sore ^(LF)seven days. ⁵And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day; and indeed if the sore appears to be as it was, and the sore has not spread on the skin, then the priest shall isolate him another seven days. ⁶Then the priest shall examine him again on the seventh day; and indeed if the sore has faded, and the sore has not spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is only a scab, and he ^(LG)shall wash his clothes and be clean. ⁷But if the scab should at all spread over the skin, after he has been seen by the priest for his cleansing, he shall be seen by the priest again. ⁸And if the priest sees that the scab has indeed spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him ^[bm]unclean. It is leprosy.

⁹“When the leprous sore is on a person, then he shall be brought to the priest. ¹⁰^(LH)And the priest shall examine him; and indeed if the swelling on the skin is white, and it has turned the hair white, and there is a spot of raw flesh in the swelling, ¹¹it is an old leprosy on the skin of his body. The priest shall pronounce him ^[bn]unclean, and shall not isolate him, for he is unclean.

¹²“And if leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of the one who has the sore, from his head to his foot, wherever the priest looks, ¹³then the priest shall consider; and indeed if the leprosy has covered all his body, he shall pronounce him clean who has the sore. It has all turned ^(LI)white. He is clean. ¹⁴But when raw flesh appears on him, he shall be unclean. ¹⁵And the priest shall examine the raw flesh and pronounce him to be unclean; for the raw flesh is unclean. It is leprosy. ¹⁶Or if the raw flesh changes and turns white again, he shall come to the priest. ¹⁷And the priest shall examine him; and indeed if the sore has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him clean who has the sore. He is clean.

¹⁸“If the body develops a ^(LJ)boil in the skin, and it is healed, ¹⁹and in the place of the boil there comes a white swelling or a bright spot, reddish-white, then it shall be shown to the priest; ²⁰and if, when the priest sees it, it indeed appears deeper than the skin, and its hair has turned white, the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a leprous sore which has broken out of the boil. ²¹But if the priest examines it, and indeed there are no white hairs in it, and it is not deeper than the skin, but has faded, then the priest shall isolate him seven days; ²²and if it should at all spread over the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a ^[bo]leprous sore. ²³But if the bright spot stays in one place, and has not spread, it is the scar of the boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

²⁴“Or if the body receives a ^(LK)burn on its skin by fire, and the raw flesh of the burn becomes a bright spot, reddish-white or white, ²⁵then the priest shall examine it; and indeed if the hair of the bright spot has turned white, and it appears deeper than the skin, it is leprosy broken out in the burn. Therefore the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a leprous sore. ²⁶But if the priest examines it, and indeed there are no white hairs in the bright spot, and it is not deeper than the skin, but has faded, then the priest shall isolate him seven days. ²⁷And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day. If it has at all spread over the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a leprous sore. ²⁸But if the bright spot stays in one place, and has not spread on the skin, but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn. The priest shall pronounce him clean, for it is the scar from the burn.

²⁹“If a man or woman has a sore on the head or the beard, ³⁰then the priest shall examine the sore; and indeed if it appears deeper than the skin, and there is in it thin yellow hair, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a scaly leprosy of the head or beard. ³¹But if the priest examines the scaly sore, and indeed it does not appear deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall isolate the one who has the scale seven days. ³²And on the seventh day the priest shall examine the sore; and indeed if the scale has not spread, and there is no yellow hair in it, and the scale does not appear deeper than the skin, ³³he shall shave himself, but the scale he shall not shave. And the priest shall isolate the one who has the scale another seven days. ³⁴On the seventh day the priest shall examine the scale; and indeed if the scale has not spread over the skin, and does not appear deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. He shall wash his clothes and be clean. ³⁵But if the scale should at all spread over the skin after his cleansing, ³⁶then the priest shall examine him; and indeed if the scale has spread over the skin, the priest need not seek for yellow hair. He is unclean. ³⁷But if the scale appears to be at a standstill, and there is black hair grown up in it, the scale has healed. He is clean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

³⁸“If a man or a woman has bright spots on the skin of the body, specifically white bright spots, ³⁹then the priest shall look; and indeed if the bright spots on the skin of the body are dull white, it is a white spot that grows on the skin. He is clean.

⁴⁰“As for the man whose hair has fallen from his head, he is bald, but he is clean. ⁴¹He whose hair has fallen from his forehead, he is bald on the forehead, but he is clean. ⁴²And if there is on the bald head or bald ^(LL)forehead a reddish-white sore, it is leprosy breaking out on his bald head or his bald forehead. ⁴³Then the priest shall examine it; and indeed if the swelling of the sore is reddish-white on his bald head or on his bald forehead, as the appearance of leprosy on the skin of the body, ⁴⁴he is a leprous man. He is unclean. The priest shall surely pronounce him ^[bp]unclean; his sore is on his ^(LM)head.

⁴⁵“Now the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head ^(LN)bare; and he shall ^(LO)cover his mustache, and cry, ^(LP)‘Unclean! Unclean!’ ⁴⁶He shall be unclean. All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean. He is unclean, and he shall ^[bq]dwell alone; his dwelling shall be ^(LQ)outside the camp.

The Law Concerning Leprous Garments

⁴⁷“Also, if a garment has a ^[br]leprous plague in it, whether it is a woolen garment or a linen garment, ⁴⁸whether it is in the warp or woof of linen or wool, whether in leather or in anything made of leather, ⁴⁹and if the plague is greenish or reddish in the garment or in the leather, whether in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, it is a leprous ^[bs]plague and shall be shown to the priest. ⁵⁰The priest shall examine the plague and isolate that which has the plague seven days. ⁵¹And he shall examine the plague on the seventh day. If the plague has spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, in the leather or in anything made of leather, the plague is ^(LR)an active leprosy. It is unclean. ⁵²He shall therefore burn that garment in which is the plague, whether warp or woof, in wool or in linen, or anything of leather, for it is an active leprosy; the garment shall be burned in the fire.

⁵³“But if the priest examines it, and indeed the plague has not spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, ⁵⁴then the priest shall command that they wash the thing in which is the plague; and he shall isolate it another seven days. ⁵⁵Then the priest shall examine the plague after it has been washed; and indeed if the plague has not changed its color, though the plague has not spread, it is unclean, and you shall burn it in the fire; it continues eating away, whether the damage is outside or inside. ⁵⁶If the priest examines it, and indeed the plague has faded after washing it, then he shall tear it out of the garment, whether out of the warp or out of the woof, or out of the leather. ⁵⁷But if it appears again in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, it is a spreading plague; you shall burn with fire that in which is the plague. ⁵⁸And if you wash the garment, either warp or woof, or whatever is made of leather, if the plague has disappeared from it, then it shall be washed a second time, and shall be clean.

⁵⁹“This is the law of the leprous plague in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp or woof, or in anything made of leather, to pronounce it clean or to pronounce it unclean.”

The Ritual for Cleansing Healed Lepers^(LS)

14 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“This shall be the law of the ^[bt]leper for the day of his cleansing: He ^(LT)shall be brought to the priest. ³And the priest shall go out of the camp, and the priest shall examine him; and indeed, if the ^[bu]leprosy is healed in the leper, ⁴then the priest shall command to take for him who is to be cleansed two living and clean birds, ^(LU)cedar wood, ^(LV)scarlet, and ^(LW)hyssop. ⁵And the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water. ⁶As for the living bird, he shall take it, the cedar wood and the scarlet and the hyssop, and dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water. ⁷And he shall ^(LX)sprinkle it ^(LY)seven times on him who is to be cleansed from the leprosy, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose in the open field. ⁸He who is to be cleansed ^(LZ)shall wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and ^(MA)wash himself in water, that he may be clean. After that he shall come into the camp, and ^(MB)shall stay outside his tent seven days. ⁹But on the ^(MC)seventh day he shall shave all the hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows—all his hair he shall shave off. He shall wash his clothes and wash his body in water, and he shall be clean.

¹⁰“And on the eighth day ^(MD)he shall take two male lambs without blemish, one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish, three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as ^(ME)a grain offering, and one log of oil. ¹¹Then the priest who makes him clean shall present the man who is to be made clean, and those things, before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ¹²And the priest shall take one male lamb and ^(MF)offer it as a trespass offering, and the log of oil, and ^(MG)wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. ¹³Then he shall kill the lamb ^(MH)in the place where he kills the sin offering and the burnt offering, in a holy place; for ^(MI)as the sin offering is the priest’s, so is the trespass offering. ^(MJ)It is most holy. ¹⁴The priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it ^(MK)on the tip of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. ¹⁵And the priest shall take some of the log of oil, and pour it into the palm of his own left hand. ¹⁶Then the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand, and shall ^(ML)sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. ¹⁷And of the rest of the oil in his hand, the priest shall put some on the tip of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the blood of the trespass offering. ¹⁸The rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of him who is to be cleansed. ^(MM)So the priest shall make ^[bv]atonement for him before the Lord.

¹⁹“Then the priest shall offer ^(MN)the sin offering, and make atonement for him who is to be cleansed from his uncleanness. Afterward he shall kill the burnt offering. ²⁰And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. So the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be ^(MO)clean.

²¹“But ^(MP)if he is poor and cannot afford it, then he shall take one male lamb as a trespass offering to be waved, to make atonement for him, ^[bw]one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, a log of oil, ²²^(MQ)and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, such as he is able to afford: one shall be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering. ²³^(MR)He shall bring them to the priest on the eighth day for his cleansing, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, before the Lord. ²⁴^(MS)And the priest shall take the lamb of the trespass offering and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. ²⁵Then he shall kill the lamb of the trespass offering, ^(MT)and the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering and put it on the tip of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. ²⁶And the priest shall pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand. ²⁷Then the priest shall sprinkle with his right finger some of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before the Lord. ²⁸And the priest shall put some of the oil that is in his hand on the tip of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of the right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the place of the blood of the trespass offering. ²⁹The rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of him who is to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before the Lord. ³⁰And he shall offer one of ^(MU)the turtledoves or young pigeons, such as he can afford— ³¹such as he is able to afford, the one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, with the grain offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him who is to be cleansed before the Lord. ³²This is the law for one who had a leprous sore, who cannot afford ^(MV)the usual cleansing.”

The Law Concerning Leprous Houses

³³And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: ³⁴^(MW)“When you have come into the land of Canaan, which I give you as a possession, and ^(MX)I put the ^[bx]leprous plague in a house in the land of your possession, ³⁵and he who owns the house comes and tells the priest, saying, ‘It seems to me that there is ^(MY)some plague in the house,’ ³⁶then the priest shall command that they empty the house, before the priest goes into it to examine the plague, that all that is in the house may not be made unclean; and afterward the priest shall go in to examine the house. ³⁷And he shall examine the plague; and indeed if the plague is on the walls of the house with ingrained streaks, greenish or reddish, which appear to be ^[by]deep in the wall, ³⁸then the priest shall go out of the house, to the door of the house, and ^[bz]shut up the house seven days. ³⁹And the priest shall come again on the seventh day and look; and indeed if the plague has spread on the walls of the house, ⁴⁰then the priest shall command that they take away the stones in which is the plague, and they shall cast them into an unclean place outside the city. ⁴¹And he shall cause the house to be scraped inside, all around, and the dust that they scrape off they shall pour out in an unclean place outside the city. ⁴²Then they shall take other stones and put them in the place of those stones, and he shall take other mortar and plaster the house.

⁴³“Now if the plague comes back and breaks out in the house, after he has taken away the stones, after he has scraped the house, and after it is plastered, ⁴⁴then the priest shall come and look; and indeed if the plague has spread in the house, it is ^(MZ)an active leprosy in the house. It is unclean. ⁴⁵And he shall break down the house, its stones, its timber, and all the plaster of the house, and he shall carry them outside the city to an unclean place. ⁴⁶Moreover he who goes into the house at all while it is shut up shall be ^[ca]unclean ^(NA)until evening. ⁴⁷And he who lies down in the house shall ^(NB)wash his clothes, and he who eats in the house shall wash his clothes.

⁴⁸“But if the priest comes in and examines it, and indeed the plague has not spread in the house after the house was plastered, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed. ⁴⁹And ^(NC)he shall take, to cleanse the house, two birds, cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop. ⁵⁰Then he shall kill one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water; ⁵¹and he shall take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times. ⁵²And he shall ^[cb]cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and the running water and the living bird, with the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet. ⁵³Then he shall let the living bird loose outside the city in the open field, and ^(ND)make atonement for the house, and it shall be clean.

⁵⁴“This is the law for any ^(NE)leprous sore and scale, ⁵⁵for the ^(NF)leprosy of a garment ^(NG)and of a house, ⁵⁶^(NH)for a swelling and a scab and a bright spot, ⁵⁷to ^(NI)teach when it is unclean and when it is clean. This is the law of leprosy.”

The Law Concerning Bodily Discharges

15 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, ²“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ^(NJ)‘When any man has a discharge from his body, his discharge is unclean. ³And this shall be his uncleanness in regard to his discharge—whether his body runs with his discharge, or his body is stopped up by his discharge, it is his uncleanness. ⁴Every bed is ^[cc]unclean on which he who has the discharge lies, and everything on which he sits shall be unclean. ⁵And whoever ^(NK)touches his bed shall ^(NL)wash his clothes and ^(NM)bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ⁶He who sits on anything on which he who has the ^(NN)discharge sat shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ⁷And he who touches the body of him who has the discharge shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ⁸If he who has the discharge ^(NO)spits on him who is clean, then he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ⁹Any saddle on which he who has the discharge rides shall be unclean. ¹⁰Whoever touches anything that was under him shall be unclean until evening. He who carries any of those things shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ¹¹And whomever the one who has the discharge touches, and has not rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ¹²The ^(NP)vessel of earth that he who has the discharge touches shall be broken, and every vessel of wood shall be rinsed in water.

¹³‘And when he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then ^(NQ)he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe his body in running water; then he shall be clean. ¹⁴On the eighth day he shall take for himself ^(NR)two turtledoves or two young pigeons, and come before the Lord, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and give them to the priest. ¹⁵Then the priest shall offer them, ^(NS)the one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. ^(NT)So the priest shall make ^[cd]atonement for him before the Lord because of his discharge.

¹⁶^(NU)‘If any man has an emission of semen, then he shall wash all his body in water, and be unclean until evening. ¹⁷And any garment and any leather on which there is semen, it shall be washed with water, and be unclean until evening. ¹⁸Also, when a woman lies with a man, and there is an emission of semen, they shall bathe in water, and ^(NV)be unclean until evening.

¹⁹^(NW)‘If a woman has a discharge, and the discharge from her body is blood, she shall be ^[ce]set apart seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. ²⁰Everything that she lies on during her impurity shall be unclean; also everything that she sits on shall be unclean. ²¹Whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ²²And whoever touches anything that she sat on shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. ²³If anything is on her bed or on anything on which she sits, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until evening. ²⁴And ^(NX)if any man lies with her at all, so that her impurity is on him, he shall be ^[cf]unclean seven days; and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean.

²⁵‘If ^(NY)a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, other than at the time of her customary impurity, or if it runs beyond her usual time of impurity, all the days of her unclean discharge shall be as the days of her customary impurity. She shall be unclean. ²⁶Every bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge shall be to her as the bed of her impurity; and whatever she sits on shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her impurity. ²⁷Whoever touches those things shall be unclean; he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

²⁸‘But ^(NZ)if she is cleansed of her discharge, then she shall count for herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. ²⁹And on the eighth day she shall take for herself two turtledoves or two young pigeons, and bring them to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ³⁰Then the priest shall offer the one as a sin offering and the other as a ^(OA)burnt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for her before the Lord for the discharge of her uncleanness.

³¹‘Thus you shall ^(OB)separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness, lest they die in their uncleanness when they ^(OC)defile My tabernacle that is among them. ³²^(OD)This is the law for one who has a discharge, ^(OE)and for him who emits semen and is unclean thereby, ³³^(OF)and for her who is indisposed because of her customary impurity, and for one who has a discharge, either man ^(OG)or woman, ^(OH)and for him who lies with her who is unclean.’ ”

The Day of Atonement

16 Now the Lord spoke to Moses after ^(OI)the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the Lord, and died; ²and the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother ^(OJ)not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for ^(OK)I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

³^[cg]“Thus Aaron shall ^(OL)come into the Holy Place: ^(OM)with the blood of a young bull as a sin offering, and of a ram as a burnt offering. ⁴He shall put the ^(ON)holy linen tunic and the linen trousers on his body; he shall be girded with a linen sash, and with the linen turban he shall be attired. These are holy garments. Therefore ^(OO)he shall wash his body in water, and put them on. ⁵And he shall take from ^(OP)the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats as a sin offering, and one ram as a burnt offering.

⁶“Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering, which is for himself, and ^(OQ)make atonement for himself and for his house. ⁷He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ⁸Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. ⁹And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord’s lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. ¹⁰But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make ^(OR)atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness.

¹¹“And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for ^(OS)himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering which is for himself. ¹²Then he shall take ^(OT)a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, with his hands full of ^(OU)sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil. ¹³^(OV)And he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense may cover the ^(OW)mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he ^(OX)die. ¹⁴^(OY)He shall take some of the blood of the bull and ^(OZ)sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

¹⁵^(PA)“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood ^(PB)inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. ¹⁶So he shall ^(PC)make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. ¹⁷There shall be ^(PD)no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel. ¹⁸And he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord, and make atonement for ^(PE)it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. ¹⁹Then he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, cleanse it, and ^(PF)consecrate^[ch] it from the ^[ci]uncleanness of the children of Israel.

²⁰“And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place, the tabernacle of meeting, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat. ²¹Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, ^(PG)confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, ^(PH)putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man. ²²The goat ^[cj]shall ^(PI)bear on itself all their iniquities to an ^[ck]uninhabited land; and he shall ^(PJ)release the goat in the wilderness.

²³“Then Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of meeting, ^(PK)shall take off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there. ²⁴And he shall wash his body with water in a holy place, put on his garments, come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make ^[cl]atonement for himself and for the people. ²⁵^(PL)The fat of the sin offering he shall burn on the altar. ²⁶And he who released the goat as the scapegoat shall wash his clothes ^(PM)and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. ²⁷^(PN)The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp. And they shall burn in the fire their skins, their flesh, and their offal. ²⁸Then he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

²⁹“This shall be a statute forever for you: ^(PO)In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall ^[cm]afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who ^[cn]dwells among you. ³⁰For on that day the priest shall make ^[co]atonement for you, to ^(PP)cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. ³¹^(PQ)It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever. ³²^(PR)And the priest, who is anointed and ^(PS)consecrated to minister as priest in his father’s place, shall make atonement, and put on the linen clothes, the holy garments; ³³then he shall make ^[cp]atonement for ^[cq]the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. ³⁴^(PT)This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, ^(PU)once a year.” And he did as the Lord commanded Moses.
