²⁶And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²⁷^(A)“When a bull or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall be seven days with its mother; and from the eighth day and thereafter it shall be accepted as an offering made by fire to the Lord. ²⁸Whether it is a cow or ewe, do not kill both her ^(B)and her young on the same day. ²⁹And when you ^(C)offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, offer it of your own free will. ³⁰On the same day it shall be eaten; you shall leave ^(D)none of it until morning: I am the Lord.

³¹^(E)“Therefore you shall keep My commandments, and perform them: I am the Lord. ³²^(F)You shall not profane My holy name, but ^(G)I will be ^[a]hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the Lord who ^(H)sanctifies you, ³³^(I)who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord.”

Feasts of the Lord

23 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be ^(J)holy convocations, these are My feasts.

The Sabbath

³^(K)‘Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.

The Passover and Unleavened Bread^(L)

⁴^(M)‘These are the feasts of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. ⁵^(N)On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the Lord’s Passover. ⁶And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. ⁷^(O)On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no ^[b]customary work on it. ⁸But you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord for seven days. The seventh day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.’ ”

The Feast of Firstfruits

⁹And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁰“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ^(P)‘When you come into the land which I give to you, and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of ^(Q)the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. ¹¹He shall ^(R)wave the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted on your behalf; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. ¹²And you shall offer on that day, when you wave the sheaf, a male lamb of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering to the Lord. ¹³Its grain offering shall be two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to the Lord, for a ^[c]sweet aroma; and its drink offering shall be of wine, one-fourth of a hin. ¹⁴You shall eat neither bread nor parched grain nor fresh grain until the same day that you have brought an offering to your God; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

The Feast of Weeks^(S)

¹⁵‘And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. ¹⁶Count ^(T)fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer ^(U)a new grain offering to the Lord. ¹⁷You shall bring from your dwellings two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven. They are ^(V)the firstfruits to the Lord. ¹⁸And you shall offer with the bread seven lambs of the first year, without blemish, one young bull, and two rams. They shall be as a burnt offering to the Lord, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord. ¹⁹Then you shall sacrifice ^(W)one kid of the goats as a sin offering, and two male lambs of the first year as a sacrifice of a ^(X)peace offering. ²⁰The priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits as a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs. ^(Y)They shall be holy to the Lord for the priest. ²¹And you shall proclaim on the same day that it is a holy convocation to you. You shall do no customary work on it. It shall be a statute forever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

²²^(Z)‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field when you reap, nor shall you gather any gleaning from your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God.’ ”

The Feast of Trumpets^(AA)

²³Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁴“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the ^(AB)seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, ^(AC)a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. ²⁵You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.’ ”

The Day of Atonement^(AD)

²⁶And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²⁷^(AE)“Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. ²⁸And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, ^(AF)to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. ²⁹For any person who is not ^(AG)afflicted in soul on that same day ^(AH)shall be cut off from his people. ³⁰And any person who does any work on that same day, ^(AI)that person I will destroy from among his people. ³¹You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. ³²It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall ^[d]afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall ^[e]celebrate your sabbath.”

The Feast of Tabernacles^(AJ)

³³Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ³⁴“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ^(AK)‘The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days to the Lord. ³⁵On the first day there shall be a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work on it. ³⁶For seven days you shall offer an ^(AL)offering made by fire to the Lord. ^(AM)On the eighth day you shall have a holy convocation, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. It is a ^(AN)sacred^[f] assembly, and you shall do no customary work on it.

³⁷^(AO)‘These are the feasts of the Lord which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire to the Lord, a burnt offering and a grain offering, a sacrifice and drink offerings, everything on its day— ³⁸^(AP)besides the Sabbaths of the Lord, besides your gifts, besides all your vows, and besides all your freewill offerings which you give to the Lord.

³⁹‘Also on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have ^(AQ)gathered in the fruit of the land, you shall keep the feast of the Lord for seven days; on the first day there shall be a sabbath-rest, and on the eighth day a sabbath-rest. ⁴⁰And ^(AR)you shall take for yourselves on the first day the ^[g]fruit of beautiful trees, branches of palm trees, the boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; ^(AS)and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. ⁴¹^(AT)You shall keep it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It shall be a statute forever in your generations. You shall celebrate it in the seventh month. ⁴²^(AU)You shall dwell in ^[h]booths for seven days. ^(AV)All who are native Israelites shall dwell in booths, ⁴³^(AW)that your generations may ^(AX)know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when ^(AY)I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.’ ”

⁴⁴So Moses ^(AZ)declared to the children of Israel the feasts of the Lord.

Leviticus 22:26-23:44

²⁶The Lord said to Moses, ²⁷“When a calf, a lamb or a goat^(A) is born, it is to remain with its mother for seven days.^(B) From the eighth day^(C) on, it will be acceptable^(D) as a food offering presented to the Lord. ²⁸Do not slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young on the same day.^(E)

²⁹“When you sacrifice a thank offering^(F) to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf. ³⁰It must be eaten that same day; leave none of it till morning.^(G) I am the Lord.^(H)

The Appointed Festivals

23 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals,^(P) the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.^(Q)

The Sabbath

³“‘There are six days when you may work,^(R) but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest,^(S) a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work;^(T) wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord.

The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread^(U)

⁴“‘These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times:^(V) ⁵The Lord’s Passover^(W) begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month.^(X) ⁶On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Festival of Unleavened Bread^(Y) begins; for seven days^(Z) you must eat bread made without yeast. ⁷On the first day hold a sacred assembly^(AA) and do no regular work. ⁸For seven days present a food offering to the Lord.^(AB) And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’”

Offering the Firstfruits

⁹The Lord said to Moses, ¹⁰“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you^(AC) and you reap its harvest,^(AD) bring to the priest a sheaf^(AE) of the first grain you harvest.^(AF) ¹¹He is to wave the sheaf before the Lord^(AG) so it will be accepted^(AH) on your behalf; the priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath. ¹²On the day you wave the sheaf, you must sacrifice as a burnt offering to the Lord a lamb a year old^(AI) without defect,^(AJ) ¹³together with its grain offering^(AK) of two-tenths of an ephah^[a]^(AL) of the finest flour mixed with olive oil—a food offering presented to the Lord, a pleasing aroma—and its drink offering^(AM) of a quarter of a hin^[b] of wine.^(AN) ¹⁴You must not eat any bread, or roasted or new grain,^(AO) until the very day you bring this offering to your God.^(AP) This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come,^(AQ) wherever you live.^(AR)

The Festival of Weeks^(AS)

¹⁵“‘From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. ¹⁶Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath,^(AT) and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord. ¹⁷From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of two-tenths of an ephah^(AU) of the finest flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of firstfruits^(AV) to the Lord. ¹⁸Present with this bread seven male lambs, each a year old and without defect, one young bull and two rams. They will be a burnt offering to the Lord, together with their grain offerings and drink offerings^(AW)—a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ¹⁹Then sacrifice one male goat for a sin offering^[c] and two lambs, each a year old, for a fellowship offering. ²⁰The priest is to wave the two lambs before the Lord as a wave offering,^(AX) together with the bread of the firstfruits. They are a sacred offering to the Lord for the priest. ²¹On that same day you are to proclaim a sacred assembly^(AY) and do no regular work.^(AZ) This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.

²²“‘When you reap the harvest^(BA) of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest.^(BB) Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you.^(BC) I am the Lord your God.’”

The Festival of Trumpets^(BD)

²³The Lord said to Moses, ²⁴“Say to the Israelites: ‘On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of sabbath rest, a sacred assembly^(BE) commemorated with trumpet blasts.^(BF) ²⁵Do no regular work,^(BG) but present a food offering to the Lord.^(BH)’”

The Day of Atonement^(BI)

²⁶The Lord said to Moses, ²⁷“The tenth day of this seventh month^(BJ) is the Day of Atonement.^(BK) Hold a sacred assembly^(BL) and deny yourselves,^[d] and present a food offering to the Lord. ²⁸Do not do any work^(BM) on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. ²⁹Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people.^(BN) ³⁰I will destroy from among their people^(BO) anyone who does any work on that day. ³¹You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance^(BP) for the generations to come, wherever you live. ³²It is a day of sabbath rest^(BQ) for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”^(BR)

The Festival of Tabernacles^(BS)

³³The Lord said to Moses, ³⁴“Say to the Israelites: ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh^(BT) month the Lord’s Festival of Tabernacles^(BU) begins, and it lasts for seven days. ³⁵The first day is a sacred assembly;^(BV) do no regular work.^(BW) ³⁶For seven days present food offerings to the Lord, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly^(BX) and present a food offering to the Lord.^(BY) It is the closing special assembly; do no regular work.

³⁷(“‘These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for bringing food offerings to the Lord—the burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings^(BZ) required for each day. ³⁸These offerings^(CA) are in addition to those for the Lord’s Sabbaths^(CB) and^[e] in addition to your gifts and whatever you have vowed and all the freewill offerings^(CC) you give to the Lord.)

³⁹“‘So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival^(CD) to the Lord for seven days;^(CE) the first day is a day of sabbath rest, and the eighth day also is a day of sabbath rest. ⁴⁰On the first day you are to take branches^(CF) from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees^(CG)—and rejoice^(CH) before the Lord your God for seven days. ⁴¹Celebrate this as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. ⁴²Live in temporary shelters^(CI) for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters ⁴³so your descendants will know^(CJ) that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.’”

⁴⁴So Moses announced to the Israelites the appointed festivals of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord^(A)

14 Behold, ^(B)the day of the Lord is coming,
And your ^[a]spoil will be divided in your midst.
²For ^(C)I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses ^[b]rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

³Then the Lord will go forth
And fight against those nations,
As He fights in the day of battle.

¹¹The people shall dwell in it;

¹²And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem:

Their flesh shall ^[h]dissolve while they stand on their feet,
Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets,
And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.

¹³It shall come to pass in that day
That ^(R)a great panic from the Lord will be among them.
Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor,
And raise ^(S)his hand against his neighbor’s hand;
¹⁴Judah also will fight at Jerusalem.
^(T)And the wealth of all the surrounding nations

Gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance.

On the horse and the mule,
On the camel and the donkey,
And on all the cattle that will be in those camps.
So shall this plague be.

The Nations Worship the King

¹⁶And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall ^(V)go up from year to year to ^(W)worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep ^(X)the Feast of Tabernacles. ¹⁷^(Y)And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, on them there will be no rain. ¹⁸If the family of ^(Z)Egypt will not come up and enter in, ^(AA)they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the Lord strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. ¹⁹This shall be the ^[i]punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.

²⁰In that day ^(AB)“HOLINESS TO THE LORD” shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. The ^(AC)pots in the Lord’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar. ²¹Yes, ^[j]every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the Lord of hosts. Everyone who sacrifices shall come and take them and cook in them. In that day there shall no longer be a ^(AD)Canaanite ^(AE)in the house of the Lord of hosts.

The Lord Comes and Reigns

14 A day of the Lord^(A) is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions^(B) will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.

²I will gather all the nations^(C) to Jerusalem to fight against it;^(D) the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.^(E) Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.^(F) ³Then the Lord will go out and fight^(G) against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle.^(H) ⁴On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,^(I) east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split^(J) in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. ⁵You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake^[a]^(K) in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come,^(L) and all the holy ones with him.^(M)

⁶On that day there will be neither sunlight^(N) nor cold, frosty darkness. ⁷It will be a unique^(O) day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night.^(P) When evening comes, there will be light.^(Q)

⁸On that day living water^(R) will flow^(S) out from Jerusalem, half of it east^(T) to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.^(U)

⁹The Lord will be king^(V) over the whole earth.^(W) On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.^(X)

¹⁰The whole land, from Geba^(Y) to Rimmon,^(Z) south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up^(AA) high from the Benjamin Gate^(AB) to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate,^(AC) and from the Tower of Hananel^(AD) to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place.^(AE) ¹¹It will be inhabited;^(AF) never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.^(AG)

¹²This is the plague with which the Lord will strike^(AH) all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.^(AI) ¹³On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic.^(AJ) They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another.^(AK) ¹⁴Judah^(AL) too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected^(AM)—great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. ¹⁵A similar plague^(AN) will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.

¹⁶Then the survivors^(AO) from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship^(AP) the King,^(AQ) the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^(AR) ¹⁷If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship^(AS) the King, the Lord Almighty, they will have no rain.^(AT) ¹⁸If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord^[b] will bring on them the plague^(AU) he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^(AV) ¹⁹This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^(AW)

²⁰On that day holy to the Lord^(AX) will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots^(AY) in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls^(AZ) in front of the altar. ²¹Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy^(BA) to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day^(BB) there will no longer be a Canaanite^[c]^(BC) in the house^(BD) of the Lord Almighty.^(BE)

²All the Israelites came together to King Solomon at the time of the festival^(A) in the month of Ethanim, the seventh month.^(B)

³When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests^(C) took up the ark, ⁴and they brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting^(D) and all the sacred furnishings in it. The priests and Levites^(E) carried them up, ⁵and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing^(F) so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.

⁶The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant^(G) to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place,^(H) and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim.^(I) ⁷The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed^(J) the ark and its carrying poles. ⁸These poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today.^(K) ⁹There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets^(L) that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

¹⁰When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud^(M) filled the temple of the Lord. ¹¹And the priests could not perform their service^(N) because of the cloud, for the glory^(O) of the Lord filled his temple.

¹²Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;^(P) ¹³I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell^(Q) forever.”

¹⁴While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed^(R) them. ¹⁵Then he said:

“Praise be to the Lord,^(S) the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said, ¹⁶‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt,^(T) I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name^(U) might be there, but I have chosen^(V) David^(W) to rule my people Israel.’

¹⁷“My father David had it in his heart^(X) to build a temple^(Y) for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. ¹⁸But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. ¹⁹Nevertheless, you^(Z) are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’^(AA)
