The Law of Guilt Offerings

‘Now if a person sins after he hears a [a]public (A)order to testify when he is a witness, whether he has seen or otherwise known, if he does not tell it, then he will bear his punishment. Or if a person touches (B)any unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean animal, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or a carcass of unclean swarming things, though it is hidden from him and he is unclean, then he will be guilty. Or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort his uncleanness may be with which he becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty. Or if a person (C)swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, in whatever matter people speak thoughtlessly with an oath, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty of one of these things. So it shall be when he becomes guilty of one of these things, that he shall (D)confess that in which he has sinned. He shall also bring his guilt offering to the Lord for his sin which he has [b]committed, (E)a female from the flock, a lamb or a [c]goat as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin.

‘But if [d]he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring to the Lord his guilt offering for that in which he has sinned, two turtledoves or two young doves, (F)one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. He shall bring them to the priest, who shall first offer that which is for the sin offering, and shall pinch off its head at the front of its neck, but he (G)shall not sever it. He shall also sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering (H)on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out (I)at the base of the altar: it is a sin offering. 10 The second he shall then prepare as a burnt offering (J)according to the ordinance. (K)So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin which he has [e]committed, and it will be forgiven him.

11 ‘But (L)if his [f]means are insufficient for two turtledoves or two young doves, then for his offering for that which he has sinned, he shall bring the tenth of an [g]ephah of fine flour as a sin offering; (M)he shall not put oil on it or place incense on it, for it is a sin offering. 12 He shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it as its memorial portion and offer it up in smoke on the altar, [h]with the offerings of the Lord by fire: it is a sin offering. 13 So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he has [i]committed from (N)one of these, and it will be forgiven him; then (O)the rest shall become the priest’s, like the grain offering.’”

14 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 15 (P)If a person acts unfaithfully and sins (Q)unintentionally against the Lords holy things, then he shall bring his (R)guilt offering to the Lord: (S)a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment in silver by shekels, in terms of the (T)shekel of the sanctuary, as a guilt offering. 16 And (U)he shall make restitution for that which he has sinned against the holy thing, and shall add to it a fifth part of it and give it to the priest. (V)The priest shall then make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and it will be forgiven him.

17 “Now if a person sins and does any of the things [j]which the Lord has commanded not to be done, (W)though he was unaware, he is still guilty and shall bear his punishment. 18 He is then to bring to the priest (X)a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment, as a guilt offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he committed (Y)unintentionally and did not know it, and it will be forgiven him. 19 It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty before the Lord.”

Guilt Offering

[k]Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (Z)When a person sins and acts unfaithfully against the Lord, and disavows the rightful claim of his neighbor regarding a deposit or a security entrusted to him, or regarding robbery, or he has extorted from his neighbor, or (AA)has found what was lost and lied about it and sworn falsely, so that he sins regarding any of the things that people do; then it shall be, when he sins and becomes guilty, that he shall (AB)restore what he took by robbery or acquired by extortion, or the deposit which was [l]entrusted to him, or the lost property which he found, or anything about which he swore falsely; (AC)he shall make restitution for it [m]in full and add to it a fifth more. (AD)He shall give it to the one to whom it belongs on the day he presents his guilt offering. Then he shall bring to the priest his guilt offering to the Lord, (AE)a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment, as a guilt offering, and (AF)the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, and he will be forgiven for any one of the things which he may have done to incur guilt.”

The Priest’s Part in the Offerings

[n]Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is (AG)the law for the burnt offering: the burnt offering itself shall remain on the hearth on the altar all night until the morning, and (AH)the fire on the altar is to be kept burning on it. 10 The priest is to put on (AI)his linen robe, and he shall put on linen undergarments next to his [o]body; and he shall take up the fatty ashes to which the fire [p]reduces the burnt offering on the altar and place them beside the altar. 11 Then he shall take off his garments and put on other garments, and carry the fatty ashes outside the camp to a clean place. 12 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it. It shall not go out, but the priest shall burn wood on it every morning; and he shall lay out the burnt offering on it, and offer up in smoke the fat portions of the peace offerings (AJ)on it. 13 Fire shall be kept burning continually on the altar; it is not to go out.

14 ‘Now this is the law of the grain offering: the sons of Aaron shall present it before the Lord in front of the altar. 15 (AK)Then one of them shall lift up from it a handful of the fine flour of the grain offering, [q]with its oil and all the incense that is on the grain offering, and he shall offer it up in smoke on the altar, a soothing aroma, as its memorial offering to the Lord. 16 And Aaron and his sons are to eat (AL)what is left of it. It shall be eaten as unleavened cakes in a holy place; they are to eat it in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 17 (AM)It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their share from My offerings by fire; (AN)it is most holy, like the sin offering and (AO)the guilt offering. 18 (AP)Every male among the sons of Aaron may eat it; it is a permanent ordinance throughout your generations, from the offerings by fire to the Lord. [r](AQ)Whoever touches them [s]will become consecrated.’”

19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 20 “This is the offering which Aaron and his sons are to present to the Lord on the day when he is anointed; the tenth of an [t](AR)ephah of fine flour as (AS)a [u]regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening. 21 It shall be prepared with oil on a (AT)griddle. When it is well stirred, you shall bring it. You shall present the grain offering in baked pieces as a soothing aroma to the Lord. 22 The anointed priest who will be in his place [v]among his sons shall [w]offer it. By a permanent ordinance it shall be entirely offered up in smoke to the Lord. 23 So every grain offering of the priest shall be burned entirely. It shall not be eaten.”

24 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 25 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the sin offering: (AU)in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, the sin offering shall be slaughtered before the Lord; it is most holy. 26 (AV)The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it. It shall be eaten in a holy place, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 27 (AW)[x]Whoever touches its flesh [y]will become consecrated; and when any of its blood spatters on a garment, you shall wash what spattered on it in a holy place. 28 Also (AX)the earthenware vessel in which it was boiled shall be broken; and if it was boiled in a bronze vessel, then it shall be scoured and rinsed in water. 29 (AY)Every male among the priests may eat it; (AZ)it is most holy. 30 But no sin offering (BA)of which any of the blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement (BB)in the Holy Place shall be eaten; (BC)it shall be burned with fire.

The Priest’s Part in the Offerings

‘Now this is the law of the (BD)guilt offering; it is most holy. In (BE)the place where they slaughter the burnt offering they are to slaughter the guilt offering, and the priest shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar. Then he shall offer from it all its fat: the (BF)fat tail and the fat that covers the entrails, and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins; and he shall remove the lobe on the liver (BG)with the kidneys. The priest shall offer them up in smoke on the altar as an offering by fire to the Lord; it is a guilt offering. (BH)Every male among the priests may eat it. It shall be eaten in a holy place; it is most holy. The guilt offering is like the (BI)sin offering: there is one law for them. The (BJ)priest who makes atonement with it [z]shall have it. Also the priest who presents anyone’s burnt offering, [aa]that priest shall have for himself the hide of the burnt offering which he has presented. Likewise, every grain offering that is baked in the oven and everything prepared in a [ab]pan or on a (BK)griddle [ac]shall belong to the priest who presents it. 10 Every grain offering, mixed with oil or dry, shall [ad]belong to all the sons of Aaron, [ae]to all alike.

11 ‘Now this is the law of the (BL)sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord. 12 If he offers it by way of (BM)thanksgiving, then along with the sacrifice of thanksgiving he shall offer (BN)unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers [af]spread with oil, and cakes of well stirred fine flour mixed with oil. 13 With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving, he shall present his offering with cakes of (BO)leavened bread. 14 Of [ag]this he shall present one of every offering as a [ah]contribution to the Lord; (BP)it shall [ai]belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings.

15 (BQ)Now as for the flesh of the sacrifice of his thanksgiving peace offerings, it shall be eaten on the day of his offering; he shall not leave any of it over until morning. 16 But if the sacrifice of his offering is a [aj](BR)vow or a [ak]voluntary offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice, and on the next [al]day what is left of it may be eaten; 17 (BS)but what is left over from the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire. 18 So if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is ever eaten on the third day, he who offers it will not be accepted, and it will not be credited to him. It will be an (BT)unclean thing, and the person who eats it shall bear his punishment.

19 ‘Also the flesh that touches anything unclean shall not be eaten; it shall be burned with fire. [am]As for other flesh, anyone who is clean may eat such flesh. 20 (BU)But the person who eats the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the Lord, [an]when he is unclean, that person (BV)shall be cut off from his people. 21 (BW)When anyone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, or an unclean animal, or any unclean [ao]detestable thing, and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the Lord, that person shall be cut off from his people.’”

22 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall not eat (BX)any fat from an ox, a sheep, or a goat. 24 Also the fat of an animal which dies and the fat of an animal (BY)torn by animals may be put to any other use, but you certainly are not to eat it. 25 For whoever eats the fat of the animal from which [ap]an offering by fire is offered to the Lord, the person who eats it shall also be cut off from his people. 26 And (BZ)you are not to eat any blood, either of bird or animal, in any of your dwellings. 27 Any person who eats any blood, that person shall also be cut off from his people.’”

28 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 29 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘He who offers (CA)the sacrifice of his peace offerings to the Lord shall bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his peace offerings. 30 His own hands are to bring offerings by fire to the Lord. He shall bring the fat with the breast, so that the (CB)breast may be [aq]presented as a wave offering before the Lord. 31 And the priest shall offer up the fat in smoke on the altar, but (CC)the breast shall belong to Aaron and to his sons. 32 And you shall give (CD)the right thigh to the priest as a [ar]contribution from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. 33 The one among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood of the peace offerings and the fat, the right thigh shall be his as his portion. 34 For I have taken from the sons of Israel (CE)the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the [as]contribution from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their allotted portion forever from the sons of Israel.

35 ‘This is the (CF)allotment to Aaron and the allotment to his sons from the offerings by fire to the Lord, on that day when he presented them to serve as priests to the Lord. 36 [at]These the Lord had commanded to be given them from the sons of Israel on the day that He (CG)anointed them. It is their allotted portion forever throughout their generations.’”

37 This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering and the guilt offering, and (CH)the ordination offering and the sacrifice of peace offerings, 38 (CI)which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai on the day that He commanded the sons of Israel to [au]present their offerings to the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai.

“‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify(A) regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.(B)

“‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground)(C) and they are unaware that they have become unclean,(D) but then they come to realize their guilt; or if they touch human uncleanness(E) (anything that would make them unclean)(F) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath(G) to do anything, whether good or evil(H) (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess(I) in what way they have sinned. As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat(J) from the flock as a sin offering[a];(K) and the priest shall make atonement(L) for them for their sin.

“‘Anyone who cannot afford(M) a lamb(N) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons(O) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck,(P) not dividing it completely,(Q) and is to splash(R) some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar;(S) the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar.(T) It is a sin offering. 10 The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way(U) and make atonement(V) for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.(W)

11 “‘If, however, they cannot afford(X) two doves or two young pigeons,(Y) they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah[b](Z) of the finest flour(AA) for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. 12 They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial[c] portion(AB) and burn it on the altar(AC) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. It is a sin offering. 13 In this way the priest will make atonement(AD) for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest,(AE) as in the case of the grain offering.(AF)’”

The Guilt Offering

14 The Lord said to Moses: 15 “When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally(AG) in regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty(AH) a ram(AI) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.[d](AJ) It is a guilt offering.(AK) 16 They must make restitution(AL) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value(AM) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

17 “If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though they do not know it,(AN) they are guilty and will be held responsible.(AO) 18 They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering(AP) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven.(AQ) 19 It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of[e] wrongdoing against the Lord.”(AR)

[f]The Lord said to Moses: “If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord(AS) by deceiving a neighbor(AT) about something entrusted to them or left in their care(AU) or about something stolen, or if they cheat(AV) their neighbor, or if they find lost property and lie about it,(AW) or if they swear falsely(AX) about any such sin that people may commit— when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return(AY) what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found, or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution(AZ) in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.(BA) And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering,(BB) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value.(BC) In this way the priest will make atonement(BD) for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”

The Burnt Offering

The Lord said to Moses: “Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering(BE): The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.(BF) 10 The priest shall then put on his linen clothes,(BG) with linen undergarments next to his body,(BH) and shall remove the ashes(BI) of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed on the altar and place them beside the altar. 11 Then he is to take off these clothes and put on others, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.(BJ) 12 The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood(BK) and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat(BL) of the fellowship offerings(BM) on it. 13 The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

The Grain Offering

14 “‘These are the regulations for the grain offering:(BN) Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the Lord, in front of the altar. 15 The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense(BO) on the grain offering,(BP) and burn the memorial[g] portion(BQ) on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 16 Aaron and his sons(BR) shall eat the rest(BS) of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast(BT) in the sanctuary area;(BU) they are to eat it in the courtyard(BV) of the tent of meeting.(BW) 17 It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share(BX) of the food offerings presented to me.(BY) Like the sin offering[h] and the guilt offering, it is most holy.(BZ) 18 Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it.(CA) For all generations to come(CB) it is his perpetual share(CC) of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.[i](CD)’”

19 The Lord also said to Moses, 20 “This is the offering Aaron and his sons are to bring to the Lord on the day he[j] is anointed:(CE) a tenth of an ephah[k](CF) of the finest flour(CG) as a regular grain offering,(CH) half of it in the morning and half in the evening. 21 It must be prepared with oil on a griddle;(CI) bring it well-mixed and present the grain offering broken[l] in pieces as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 22 The son who is to succeed him as anointed priest(CJ) shall prepare it. It is the Lord’s perpetual share and is to be burned completely.(CK) 23 Every grain offering of a priest shall be burned completely; it must not be eaten.”

The Sin Offering

24 The Lord said to Moses, 25 “Say to Aaron and his sons: ‘These are the regulations for the sin offering:(CL) The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord(CM) in the place(CN) the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy. 26 The priest who offers it shall eat it; it is to be eaten in the sanctuary area,(CO) in the courtyard(CP) of the tent of meeting.(CQ) 27 Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy,(CR) and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment, you must wash it in the sanctuary area. 28 The clay pot(CS) the meat is cooked in must be broken; but if it is cooked in a bronze pot, the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water. 29 Any male in a priest’s family may eat it;(CT) it is most holy.(CU) 30 But any sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement(CV) in the Holy Place(CW) must not be eaten; it must be burned up.(CX)

The Guilt Offering

“‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering,(CY) which is most holy: The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. All its fat(CZ) shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys.(DA) The priest shall burn them on the altar(DB) as a food offering presented to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. Any male in a priest’s family may eat it,(DC) but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy.(DD)

“‘The same law applies to both the sin offering[m](DE) and the guilt offering:(DF) They belong to the priest(DG) who makes atonement with them.(DH) The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide(DI) for himself. Every grain offering baked in an oven(DJ) or cooked in a pan(DK) or on a griddle(DL) belongs to the priest who offers it, 10 and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.

The Fellowship Offering

11 “‘These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the Lord:

12 “‘If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering(DM) they are to offer thick loaves(DN) made without yeast(DO) and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves(DP) made without yeast and brushed with oil,(DQ) and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. 13 Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving(DR) they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast.(DS) 14 They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the Lord; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. 15 The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning.(DT)

16 “‘If, however, their offering is the result of a vow(DU) or is a freewill offering,(DV) the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day.(DW) 17 Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up.(DX) 18 If any meat of the fellowship offering(DY) is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted.(DZ) It will not be reckoned(EA) to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible.(EB)

19 “‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. 20 But if anyone who is unclean(EC) eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord, they must be cut off from their people.(ED) 21 Anyone who touches something unclean(EE)—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground[n]—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.’”

Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats.(EF) 24 The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals(EG) may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. 25 Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be[o] presented to the Lord must be cut off from their people. 26 And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood(EH) of any bird or animal. 27 Anyone who eats blood(EI) must be cut off from their people.’”

The Priests’ Share

28 The Lord said to Moses, 29 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord. 30 With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering.(EJ) 31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar,(EK) but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons.(EL) 32 You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution.(EM) 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. 34 From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh(EN) that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons(EO) as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”

35 This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. 36 On the day they were anointed,(EP) the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.

37 These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering,(EQ) the grain offering,(ER) the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering(ES) and the fellowship offering, 38 which the Lord gave Moses(ET) at Mount Sinai(EU) in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord.(EV)
