24 Fire came out from the presence of Adonai, and devoured the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.

Holy Fire Consumes Unauthorized Fire

10 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his own censer, put fire in it, laid incense over it, and offered unauthorized fire before Adonai—which He had not commanded them. So fire came out from the presence of Adonai and consumed them. So they died before Adonai. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what Adonai spoke of, saying:

To those who are near Me

I will show myself holy.

Upon the faces of all the people

I will be glorified.”

Then Aaron kept silent.

Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come near, carry your relatives away from the front of the Sanctuary to outside of the camp.” So they drew near and carried them, still in their tunics, outside of the camp, as Moses had said.

Then Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar his sons: “Do not uncover your heads or tear your clothes, so you may not die and He will not be angry with the entire congregation. But let your kinsmen—the whole house of Israel—mourn over the burning that Adonai has kindled. You must not go out from the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, or you will die, for the anointing oil of Adonai is on you.” So they acted according to the word of Moses.

Adonai spoke to Aaron saying: “Do not drink wine or fermented drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you go into the Tent of Meeting, so that you do not die. This is to be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10 You are to make a distinction between the holy and the common and between the unclean and the clean. 11 And you are to teach Bnei-Yisrael all the statutes which Adonai has spoken to them through Moses.”

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu(C) took their censers,(D) put fire in them(E) and added incense;(F) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,(G) contrary to his command.(H) So fire came out(I) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,(J) and they died before the Lord.(K) Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

Aaron remained silent.

Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,(O) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,(P) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,(Q) away from the front of the sanctuary.(R) So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,(S) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,(T) “Do not let your hair become unkempt[a](U) and do not tear your clothes,(V) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.(W) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn(X) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting(Y) or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil(Z) is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons are not to drink wine(AA) or other fermented drink(AB) whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance(AC) for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,(AD) 11 and so you can teach(AE) the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.(AF)
