Jesus Blesses Little Children(A)

15 (B)Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (C)of such is the kingdom of God. 17 (D)Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(E)

18 (F)Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but (G)One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: (H)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ (I)‘Honor your father and your mother.’

21 And he said, “All (J)these things I have kept from my youth.”

22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. (K)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

With God All Things Are Possible(L)

24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, (M)“How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

27 But He said, (N)“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

28 (O)Then Peter said, “See, we have left [a]all and followed You.”

29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, (P)there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 (Q)who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(R)

31 (S)Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things (T)that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be [b]accomplished. 32 For (U)He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. 33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

34 (V)But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

A Blind Man Receives His Sight(W)

35 (X)Then it happened, as He was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. 36 And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. 37 So they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, (Y)Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he had come near, He asked him, 41 saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

He said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

42 Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; (Z)your faith has made you well.” 43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, (AA)glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus’ House

19 Then Jesus entered and passed through (AB)Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to (AC)see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up [c]and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, [d]make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he [e]made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all [f]complained, saying, (AD)“He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the (AE)poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by (AF)false accusation, (AG)I restore fourfold.”

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because (AH)he also is (AI)a son of Abraham; 10 (AJ)for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

The Parable of the Minas(AK)

11 Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because (AL)they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. 12 (AM)Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten [g]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ 14 (AN)But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, (AO)‘Well done, good servant; because you were (AP)faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’

20 “Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. 21 (AQ)For I feared you, because you are [h]an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 And he said to him, (AR)‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. (AS)You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ 25 (But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) 26 ‘For I say to you, (AT)that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”

The Triumphal Entry(AU)

28 When He had said this, (AV)He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 (AW)And it came to pass, when He drew near to [i]Bethphage and (AX)Bethany, at the mountain called (AY)Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”

32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just (AZ)as He had said to them. 33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”

34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. (BA)And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.

37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to (BB)rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:

(BC)‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’
(BD)Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, (BE)the stones would immediately cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and (BF)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this (BG)your day, the things that (BH)make for your (BI)peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will (BJ)build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 (BK)and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and (BL)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, (BM)because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(BN)

45 (BO)Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who [j]bought and sold in it, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (BP)‘My house [k]is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a (BQ)‘den of thieves.’

47 And He (BR)was teaching daily in the temple. But (BS)the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to (BT)hear Him.

The Little Children and Jesus(A)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(B) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(C)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(D)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a](E)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(F) and you will have treasure in heaven.(G) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(H) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(I)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(J)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(K) eternal life.”(L)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(M)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(N) and everything that is written by the prophets(O) about the Son of Man(P) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(Q) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(R) and kill him.(S) On the third day(T) he will rise again.”(U)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(V)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(W)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(X) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(Y)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(Z) have mercy(AA) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(AB)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(AC) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(AD)

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(AE) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(AF) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(AG)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(AH)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(AI) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(AJ) I will pay back four times the amount.”(AK)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(AL) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(AM)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(AN)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(AO) was going to appear at once.(AP) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(AQ) and gave them ten minas.[b] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(AR) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(AS)

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(AT)

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(AU) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(AV) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(AW) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(AX)(AY)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(AZ) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(BA) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(BB) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(BC) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(BD) on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(BE) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[c](BF)

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(BG)

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(BH)

40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(BI)

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(BJ) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(BK) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(BL) They will not leave one stone on another,(BM) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(BN) to you.”

Jesus at the Temple(BO)

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[d];(BP) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[e](BQ)

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(BR) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(BS) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
