Jesus’ Authority Questioned(A)
20 Now (B)it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him 2 and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, (C)by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”
3 But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: 4 The (D)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”
5 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [a]then did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, (E)for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers(F)
9 Then He began to tell the people this parable: (G)“A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to [b]vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at [c]vintage-time he (H)sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the (I)heir. Come, (J)let us kill him, that the inheritance may be (K)ours.’ 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and (L)killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to (M)others.”
And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”
17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:
(N)‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone’?
18 Whoever falls on that stone will be (O)broken; but (P)on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”
19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they [d]feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?(Q)
20 (R)So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.
21 Then they asked Him, saying, (S)“Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, [e]“Why do you test Me? 24 Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”
They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”
25 And He said to them, (T)“Render[f] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
26 But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.
The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?(U)
27 (V)Then some of the Sadducees, (W)who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 28 saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second [g]took her as wife, and he died childless. 31 Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven [h]also; and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”
34 Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are (X)counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for (Y)they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, (Z)being sons of the resurrection. 37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord (AA)‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for (AB)all live to Him.”
39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.
Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?(AC)
41 And He said to them, (AD)“How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:
(AE)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; (AF)how is He then his Son?”
Beware of the Scribes(AG)
45 (AH)Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 (AI)“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, (AJ)love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 (AK)who devour widows’ houses, and for a (AL)pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
The Widow’s Two Mites(AM)
21 And He looked up (AN)and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain (AO)poor widow putting in two (AP)mites.[i] 3 So He said, “Truly I say to you (AQ)that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings [j]for God, but she out of her poverty put in (AR)all the livelihood that she had.”
Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple(AS)
5 (AT)Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was [k]adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, 6 “These things which you see—the days will come in which (AU)not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”
The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age(AV)
7 So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”
8 And He said: (AW)“Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ [l]Therefore do not [m]go after them. 9 But when you hear of (AX)wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.”
10 (AY)Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 And there will be great (AZ)earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. 12 (BA)But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and (BB)prisons. (BC)You will be brought before kings and rulers (BD)for My name’s sake. 13 But (BE)it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. 14 (BF)Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will [n]answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom (BG)which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or [o]resist. 16 (BH)You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put (BI)some of you to death. 17 And (BJ)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. 18 (BK)But not a hair of your head shall be lost. 19 By your patience possess your souls.
The Destruction of Jerusalem(BL)
20 (BM)“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that (BN)all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 (BO)But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles (BP)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man(BQ)
25 (BR)“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, (BS)for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man (BT)coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because (BU)your redemption draws near.”
The Parable of the Fig Tree(BV)
29 (BW)Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 (BX)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My (BY)words will by no means pass away.
The Importance of Watching(BZ)
34 “But (CA)take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with [p]carousing, drunkenness, and (CB)cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For (CC)it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 (CD)Watch therefore, and (CE)pray always that you may [q]be counted (CF)worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and (CG)to stand before the Son of Man.”
37 (CH)And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but (CI)at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. 38 Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.
The Plot to Kill Jesus(CJ)
22 Now (CK)the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And (CL)the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.
3 (CM)Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the (CN)twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and (CO)agreed to give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to (CP)betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.
Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover
7 (CQ)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [r]killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”
13 So they went and (CR)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
14 (CS)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [s]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (CT)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (CU)I say to you, [t]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 (CV)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (CW)body which is given for you; (CX)do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (CY)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (CZ)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (DA)And truly the Son of Man goes (DB)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23 (DC)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
The Disciples Argue About Greatness
24 (DD)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (DE)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (DF)But not so among you; on the contrary, (DG)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (DH)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (DI)I am among you as the One who serves.
28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (DJ)My trials. 29 And (DK)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (DL)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (DM)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(DN)
31 [u]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (DO)Satan has asked for you, that he may (DP)sift you as wheat. 32 But (DQ)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (DR)strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34 (DS)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Supplies for the Road
35 (DT)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [v]accomplished in Me: (DU)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
And He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Prayer in the Garden(DV)
39 (DW)Coming out, (DX)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (DY)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 (DZ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (EA)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [w]Then (EB)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (EC)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (ED)do you sleep? Rise and (EE)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(EF)
47 And while He was still speaking, (EG)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (EH)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (EI)kiss?”
49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (EJ)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 (EK)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (EL)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (EM)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (EN)hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(EO)
54 (EP)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (EQ)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (ER)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57 But he denied [x]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 (ES)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 (ET)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (EU)Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
Immediately, while he was still speaking, [y]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (EV)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (EW)“Before the rooster [z]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten(EX)
63 (EY)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (EZ)beat Him. 64 [aa]And having blindfolded Him, they (FA)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(FB)
66 (FC)As soon as it was day, (FD)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (FE)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (FF)by no means believe. 68 And if I [ab]also ask you, you will by no means answer [ac]Me or let Me go. 69 (FG)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
So He said to them, (FH)“You rightly say that I am.”
71 (FI)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(FJ)
23 Then (FK)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (FL)Pilate. 2 And they began to (FM)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (FN)perverting [ad]the nation, and (FO)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (FP)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
3 (FQ)Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
4 So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (FR)“I find no fault in this Man.”
5 But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (FS)Galilee to this place.”
Jesus Faces Herod
6 When Pilate heard [ae]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (FT)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, (FU)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (FV)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9 Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (FW)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (FX)Then Herod, with his [af]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (FY)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(FZ)
13 (GA)Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, (GB)“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, (GC)having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for [ag]I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 (GD)I will therefore chastise Him and release Him” 17 (GE)(for[ah] it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).
18 And (GF)they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.
20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men [ai]and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So (GG)Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 (GH)And he released [aj]to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
The King on a Cross(GI)
26 (GJ)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (GK)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (GL)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (GM)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”
32 (GN)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (GO)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [ak]Then Jesus said, “Father, (GP)forgive them, for (GQ)they do not know what they do.”
And (GR)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (GS)the people stood looking on. But even the (GT)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (GU)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
38 (GV)And an inscription also was [al]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 (GW)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [am]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (GX)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [an]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in (GY)Paradise.”
Jesus Dies on the Cross(GZ)
44 (HA)Now it [ao]was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was [ap]darkened, and (HB)the veil of the temple was torn in [aq]two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, (HC)‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” (HD)Having said this, He breathed His last.
47 (HE)So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 (HF)But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(HG)
50 (HH)Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, (HI)who[ar] himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 (HJ)Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was (HK)the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55 And the women (HL)who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and (HM)they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (HN)prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath (HO)according to the commandment.
He Is Risen(HP)
24 Now (HQ)on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, [as]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb (HR)bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 (HS)But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 (HT)Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were [at]greatly perplexed about this, that (HU)behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! (HV)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be (HW)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”
8 And (HX)they remembered His words. 9 (HY)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, (HZ)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 (IA)And their words seemed to them like [au]idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 (IB)But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths [av]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
The Road to Emmaus(IC)
13 (ID)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [aw]seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that (IE)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But (IF)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you [ax]walk and are sad?”
18 Then the one (IG)whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, (IH)who was a Prophet (II)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 (IJ)and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping (IK)that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and (IL)certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And (IM)certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (IN)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His (IO)glory?” 27 And beginning at (IP)Moses and (IQ)all the Prophets, He [ay]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
The Disciples’ Eyes Opened
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and (IR)He [az]indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But (IS)they constrained Him, saying, (IT)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
30 Now it came to pass, as (IU)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (IV)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [ba]known to them in the breaking of bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples(IW)
36 (IX)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen (IY)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. (IZ)Handle Me and see, for a (JA)spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(A)
20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(B) and proclaiming the good news,(C) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(D)
3 He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 John’s baptism(E)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(F) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(G)
7 So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8 Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants(H)
9 He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(I) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(J) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(K) perhaps they will respect him.’
14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(L) and give the vineyard to others.”
When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(N)
19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(O) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(P)
Paying Taxes to Caesar(Q)
20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(R) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(S) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(T) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(U) and to God what is God’s.”
26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The Resurrection and Marriage(V)
27 Some of the Sadducees,(W) who say there is no resurrection,(X) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(Y) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(Z) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(AA) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[b](AB) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(AC)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AD)
41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(AE) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[c](AF)
44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(AG) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
The Widow’s Offering(AH)
21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(AI) 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(AJ)
The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(AK)(AL)
5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(AM) every one of them will be thrown down.”
7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(AN) 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(AO) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(AP)
12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(AQ) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(AR) 15 For I will give you(AS) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(AT) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(AU) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(AV) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(AW)
20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(AX) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(AY) 22 For this is the time of punishment(AZ) in fulfillment(BA) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(BB) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(BC) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(BD) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(BE) coming in a cloud(BF) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(BG)
29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(BH) is near.
32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(BI) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(BJ)
34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(BK) and that day will close on you suddenly(BL) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(BM) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(BN) and each evening he went out(BO) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(BP) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(BQ)
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(BR)
22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(BS) 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(BT) for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan(BU) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(BV) one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(BW) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(BX) 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper(BY)(BZ)(CA)(CB)(CC)
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(CD) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(CE) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(CF) So they prepared the Passover.
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(CG) reclined at the table.(CH) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(CI) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(CJ)
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(CK) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(CL) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[d] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(CM) 22 The Son of Man(CN) will go as it has been decreed.(CO) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(CP) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(CQ) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(CR) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(CS) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(CT) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(CU) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(CV)
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(CW) to sift all of you as wheat.(CX) 32 But I have prayed for you,(CY) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(CZ)
33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(DA)
34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(DB) did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[e];(DC) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(DD)
39 Jesus went out as usual(DE) to the Mount of Olives,(DF) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(DG) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(DH) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(DI) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(DJ) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(DK) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[f]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(DL)
Jesus Arrested(DM)
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(DN) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(DO) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(DP) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(DQ)—when darkness reigns.”(DR)
Peter Disowns Jesus(DS)
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(DT) Peter followed at a distance.(DU) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(DV)
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(DW) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(DX) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus(DY)
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(DZ)

66 At daybreak the council(ED) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(EE) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(EF) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(EG)
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(EH)
He replied, “You say that I am.”(EI)
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(EJ) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(EK) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(EL) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(EM)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(EN)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(EO) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(EP) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(EQ) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(ER) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(ES) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(ET) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(EU)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(EV) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(EW) and then release him.” [17] [g]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(EX) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(EY)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(EZ)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(FA) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(FB) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(FC) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(FD) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(FE) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(FG)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(FH) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(FI) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[i](FJ) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(FK)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(FL) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(FM)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(FN) They offered him wine vinegar(FO) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(FP) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(FQ)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(FR)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(FS)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[j]”(FT)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(FU)
The Death of Jesus(FV)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(FW) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(FX) was torn in two.(FY) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(FZ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[k](GA) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(GB)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(GC) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(GD) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(GE) stood at a distance,(GF) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(GG)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(GH) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(GI) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(GJ) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(GK) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(GL)
Jesus Has Risen(GM)
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(GN) and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(GO) 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning(GP) stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:(GQ) 7 ‘The Son of Man(GR) must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”(GS) 8 Then they remembered his words.(GT)
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them(GU) who told this to the apostles.(GV) 11 But they did not believe(GW) the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,(GX) and he went away,(GY) wondering to himself what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[l] from Jerusalem.(GZ) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(HA) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(HB)
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(HC) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(HD) they replied. “He was a prophet,(HE) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(HF) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(HG) And what is more, it is the third day(HH) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(HI) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(HJ)
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(HK) 27 And beginning with Moses(HL) and all the Prophets,(HM) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(HN)
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it(HO) and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,(HP) and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us(HQ) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures(HR) to us?”
33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord(HS) has risen and has appeared to Simon.”(HT) 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.(HU)
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(HV)
37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(HW) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
