Preparation for Passover

Then(A) the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(B) Jesus sent Peter and John,(C) saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”

“Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked Him.

10 “Listen,” He said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs.(D) Make the preparations there.”

13 So they went and found it just as He had told them,(E) and they prepared the Passover.

The First Lord’s Supper

14 When(F) the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again[a] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”(G) 17 Then He took a cup,(H) and after giving thanks,(I) He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is My body,(J) which is given for you. Do this in remembrance(K) of Me.”

20 In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant(L) established by My blood;(M) it is shed for you.[b] 21 But(N) look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me!(O) 22 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined,(P) but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 So they began to argue(Q) among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this thing.

The Dispute over Greatness

24 Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.(R) 25 But He said to them,(S) “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them, and those who have authority over them are called[c] ‘Benefactors.’[d] 26 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you must become like the youngest,(T) and whoever leads, like the one serving. 27 For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the One who serves.(U)

The Last Supper(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(F) Jesus sent Peter and John,(G) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(H) So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(I) reclined at the table.(J) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(K) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(L)

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(M) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(N) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(O) 22 The Son of Man(P) will go as it has been decreed.(Q) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(R) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(S) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(T) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(U)
