¹⁵ But Peter said to him, ^(A)“Explain the parable to us.” ¹⁶ And he said, ^(B)“Are you also still without understanding? ¹⁷ Do you not see that ^(C)whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?^{[a] 18} But ^(D)what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. ¹⁹ For out of the heart come ^(E)evil thoughts, ^(F)murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, ^(G)slander. ^20 (H)These are what defile a person. But ^(I)to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

⁵ When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. ⁶ Jesus said to them, “Watch and ^(A)beware of ^(B)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ⁷ And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” ⁸ But ^(C)Jesus, aware of this, said, ^(D)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? ^9 (E)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember ^(F)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
