Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (A)And when they had sung a hymn, (B)they went out to (C)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (D)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (E)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (F)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (G)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (H)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (I)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 (J)Then Jesus went with them (K)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him (L)Peter and (M)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, (N)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and (O)watch[a] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face (P)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let (Q)this cup pass from me; (R)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 (S)Watch and (T)pray that you (U)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (V)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (W)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (X)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[b] See, (Y)the hour is at hand, and (Z)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (AA)While he was still speaking, (AB)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (AC)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (AD)“Friend, (AE)do what you came to do.”[c] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(B)

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(C) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[a](D)

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(E)

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(F)

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(G) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane(H)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(I) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(J) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(K)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(L) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(M)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(N) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(O) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(P)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(Q) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(R)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(S) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(T) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[b](U)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.
