10 Et convocatis duodecim discipulis suis, dedit illis potestatem spirituum immundorum, ut ejicerent eos, et curarent omnem languorem, et omnem infirmitatem.

Duodecim autem Apostolorum nomina sunt haec. Primus, Simon, qui dicitur Petrus: et Andreas frater ejus,

Jacobus Zebedaei, et Joannes frater ejus, Philippus, et Bartholomaeus, Thomas, et Matthaeus publicanus, Jacobus Alphaei, et Thaddaeus,

Simon Chananaeus, et Judas Iscariotes, qui et tradidit eum.

Hos duodecim misit Jesus, praecipiens eis, dicens: In viam gentium ne abieritis, et in civitates Samaritanorum ne intraveritis:

sed potius ite ad oves quae perierunt domus Israel.

Euntes autem praedicate, dicentes: Quia appropinquavit regnum caelorum.

Infirmos curate, mortuos suscitate, leprosos mundate, daemones ejicite: gratis accepistis, gratis date.

Nolite possidere aurum, neque argentum, neque pecuniam in zonis vestris:

10 non peram in via, neque duas tunicas, neque calceamenta, neque virgam: dignus enim est operarius cibo suo.

11 In quamcumque autem civitatem aut castellum intraveritis, interrogate, quis in ea dignus sit: et ibi manete donec exeatis.

12 Intrantes autem in domum, salutate eam, dicentes: Pax huic domui.

13 Et siquidem fuerit domus illa digna, veniet pax vestra super eam: si autem non fuerit digna, pax vestra revertetur ad vos.

14 Et quicumque non receperit vos, neque audierit sermones vestros: exeuntes foras de domo, vel civitate, excutite pulverem de pedibus vestris.

15 Amen dico vobis: Tolerabilius erit terrae Sodomorum et Gomorrhaeorum in die judicii, quam illi civitati.

16 Ecce ego mitto vos sicut oves in medio luporum. Estote ergo prudentes sicut serpentes, et simplices sicut columbae.

17 Cavete autem ab hominibus. Tradent enim vos in conciliis, et in synagogis suis flagellabunt vos:

18 et ad praesides, et ad reges ducemini propter me in testimonium illis, et gentibus.

19 Cum autem tradent vos, nolite cogitare quomodo, aut quid loquamini: dabitur enim vobis in illa hora, quid loquamini:

20 non enim vos estis qui loquimini, sed Spiritus Patris vestri, qui loquitur in vobis.

21 Tradet autem frater fratrem in mortem, et pater filium: et insurgent filii in parentes, et morte eos afficient:

22 et eritis odio omnibus propter nomen meum: qui autem perseveraverit usque in finem, hic salvus erit.

23 Cum autem persequentur vos in civitate ista, fugite in aliam. Amen dico vobis, non consummabitis civitates Israel, donec veniat Filius hominis.

24 Non est discipulus super magistrum, nec servus super dominum suum:

25 sufficit discipulo ut sit sicut magister ejus, et servo, sicut dominus ejus. Si patremfamilias Beelzebub vocaverunt, quanto magis domesticos ejus?

26 Ne ergo timueritis eos. Nihil enim est opertum, quod non revelabitur: et occultum, quod non scietur.

27 Quod dico vobis in tenebris, dicite in lumine: et quod in aure auditis, praedicate super tecta.

28 Et nolite timere eos qui occidunt corpus, animam autem non possunt occidere: sed potius timete eum, qui potest et animam et corpus perdere in gehennam.

29 Nonne duo passeres asse veneunt? et unus ex illis non cadet super terram sine Patre vestro.

30 Vestri autem capilli capitis omnes numerati sunt.

31 Nolite ergo timere: multis passeribus meliores estis vos.

32 Omnis ergo qui confitebitur me coram hominibus, confitebor et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in caelis est.

33 Qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabo et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in caelis est.

34 Nolite arbitrari quia pacem venerim mittere in terram: non veni pacem mittere, sed gladium:

35 veni enim separare hominem adversus patrem suum, et filiam adversus matrem suam, et nurum adversus socrum suam:

36 et inimici hominis, domestici ejus.

37 Qui amat patrem aut matrem plus quam me, non est me dignus: et qui amat filium aut filiam super me, non est me dignus.

38 Et qui non accipit crucem suam, et sequitur me, non est me dignus.

39 Qui invenit animam suam, perdet illam: et qui perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.

40 Qui recipit vos, me recipit: et qui me recipit, recipit eum qui me misit.

41 Qui recipit prophetam in nomine prophetae, mercedem prophetae accipiet: et qui recipit justum in nomine justi, mercedem justi accipiet.

42 Et quicumque potum dederit uni ex minimis istis calicem aquae frigidae tantum in nomine discipuli: amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam.

11 Et factum est, cum consummasset Jesus, praecipiens duodecim discipulis suis, transiit inde ut doceret, et praedicaret in civitatibus eorum.

Joannes autem cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens duos de discipulis suis,

ait illi: Tu es, qui venturus es, an alium exspectamus?

Et respondens Jesus ait illis: Euntes renuntiate Joanni quae audistis, et vidistis.

Caeci vident, claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur, surdi audiunt, mortui resurgunt, pauperes evangelizantur:

et beatus est, qui non fuerit scandalizatus in me.

Illis autem abeuntibus, coepit Jesus dicere ad turbas de Joanne: Quid existis in desertum videre? arundinem vento agitatam?

Sed quid existis videre? hominem mollibus vestitum? Ecce qui mollibus vestiuntur, in domibus regum sunt.

Sed quid existis videre? prophetam? Etiam dico vobis, et plus quam prophetam.

10 Hic est enim de quo scriptum est: Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam, qui praeparabit viam tuam ante te.

11 Amen dico vobis, non surrexit inter natos mulierum major Joanne Baptista: qui autem minor est in regno caelorum, major est illo.

12 A diebus autem Joannis Baptistae usque nunc, regnum caelorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.

13 Omnes enim prophetae et lex usque ad Joannem prophetaverunt:

14 et si vultis recipere, ipse est Elias, qui venturus est.

15 Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.

16 Cui autem similem aestimabo generationem istam? Similis est pueris sedentibus in foro: qui clamantes coaequalibus

17 dicunt: Cecinimus vobis, et non saltastis: lamentavimus, et non planxistis.

18 Venit enim Joannes neque manducans, neque bibens, et dicunt: Daemonium habet.

19 Venit Filius hominis manducans, et bibens, et dicunt: Ecce homo vorax, et potator vini, publicanorum et peccatorum amicus. Et justificata est sapientia a filiis suis.

20 Tunc coepit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factae sunt plurimae virtutes ejus, quia non egissent poenitentiam:

21 Vae tibi Corozain, vae tibi Bethsaida: quia, si in Tyro et Sidone factae essent virtutes quae factae sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio et cinere poenitentiam egissent.

22 Verumtamen dico vobis: Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in die judicii, quam vobis.

23 Et tu Capharnaum, numquid usque in caelum exaltaberis? usque in infernum descendes, quia si in Sodomis factae fuissent virtutes quae factae sunt in te, forte mansissent usque in hanc diem.

24 Verumtamen dico vobis, quia terrae Sodomorum remissius erit in die judicii, quam tibi.

25 In illo tempore respondens Jesus dixit: Confiteor tibi, Pater, Domine caeli et terrae, quia abscondisti haec a sapientibus, et prudentibus, et revelasti ea parvulis.

26 Ita Pater: quoniam sic fuit placitum ante te.

27 Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre meo. Et nemo novit Filium, nisi Pater: neque Patrem quis novit, nisi Filius, et cui voluerit Filius revelare.

28 Venite ad me omnes qui laboratis, et onerati estis, et ego reficiam vos.

29 Tollite jugum meum super vos, et discite a me, quia mitis sum, et humilis corde: et invenietis requiem animabus vestris.

30 Jugum enim meum suave est, et onus meum leve.

12 In illo tempore abiit Jesus per sata sabbato: discipuli autem ejus esurientes coeperunt vellere spicas, et manducare.

Pharisaei autem videntes, dixerunt ei: Ecce discipuli tui faciunt quod non licet facere sabbatis.

At ille dixit eis: Non legistis quid fecerit David, quando esuriit, et qui cum eo erant:

quomodo intravit in domum Dei, et panes propositionis comedit, quos non licebat ei edere, neque his qui cum eo erant, nisi solis sacerdotibus?

aut non legistis in lege quia sabbatis sacerdotes in templo sabbatum violant, et sine crimine sunt?

Dico autem vobis, quia templo major est hic.

Si autem sciretis, quid est: Misericordiam volo, et non sacrificium: numquam condemnassetis innocentes:

dominus enim est Filius hominis etiam sabbati.

Et cum inde transisset, venit in synagogam eorum.

10 Et ecce homo manum habens aridam, et interrogabant eum, dicentes: Si licet sabbatis curare? ut accusarent eum.

11 Ipse autem dixit illis: Quis erit ex vobis homo, qui habeat ovem unam, et si ceciderit haec sabbatis in foveam, nonne tenebit et levabit eam?

12 Quanto magis melior est homo ove? itaque licet sabbatis benefacere.

13 Tunc ait homini: Extende manum tuam. Et extendit, et restituta est sanitati sicut altera.

14 Exeuntes autem pharisaei, consilium faciebant adversus eum, quomodo perderent eum.

15 Jesus autem sciens recessit inde: et secuti sunt eum multi, et curavit eos omnes:

16 et praecepit eis ne manifestum eum facerent.

17 Ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam, dicentem:

18 Ecce puer meus, quem elegi, dilectus meus, in quo bene complacuit animae meae. Ponam spiritum meum super eum, et judicium gentibus nuntiabit.

19 Non contendet, neque clamabit, neque audiet aliquis in plateis vocem ejus:

20 arundinem quassatam non confringet, et linum fumigans non extinguet, donec ejiciat ad victoriam judicium:

21 et in nomine ejus gentes sperabunt.

22 Tunc oblatus est ei daemonium habens, caecus, et mutus, et curavit eum ita ut loqueretur, et videret.

23 Et stupebant omnes turbae, et dicebant: Numquid hic est filius David?

24 Pharisaei autem audientes, dixerunt: Hic non ejicit daemones nisi in Beelzebub principe daemoniorum.

25 Jesus autem sciens cogitationes eorum, dixit eis: Omne regnum divisum contra se desolabitur: et omnis civitas vel domus divisa contra se, non stabit.

26 Et si Satanas Satanam ejicit, adversus se divisus est: quomodo ergo stabit regnum ejus?

27 Et si ego in Beelzebub ejicio daemones, filii vestri in quo ejiciunt? ideo ipsi judices vestri erunt.

28 Si autem ego in Spiritu Dei ejicio daemones, igitur pervenit in vos regnum Dei.

29 Aut quomodo potest quisquam intrare in domum fortis, et vasa ejus diripere, nisi prius alligaverit fortem? et tunc domum illius diripiet.

30 Qui non est mecum, contra me est; et qui non congregat mecum, spargit.

31 Ideo dico vobis: Omne peccatum et blasphemia remittetur hominibus, Spiritus autem blasphemia non remittetur.

32 Et quicumque dixerit verbum contra Filium hominis, remittetur ei: qui autem dixerit contra Spiritum Sanctum, non remittetur ei, neque in hoc saeculo, neque in futuro.

33 Aut facite arborem bonam, et fructum ejus bonum: aut facite arborem malam, et fructum ejus malum: siquidem ex fructu arbor agnoscitur.

34 Progenies viperarum, quomodo potestis bona loqui, cum sitis mali? ex abundantia enim cordis os loquitur.

35 Bonus homo de bono thesauro profert bona: et malus homo de malo thesauro profert mala.

36 Dico autem vobis quoniam omne verbum otiosum, quod locuti fuerint homines, reddent rationem de eo in die judicii.

37 Ex verbis enim tuis justificaberis et ex verbis tuis condemnaberis.

38 Tunc responderunt ei quidam de scribis et pharisaeis, dicentes: Magister, volumus a te signum videre.

39 Qui respondens ait illis: Generatio mala et adultera signum quaerit: et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonae prophetae.

40 Sicut enim fuit Jonas in ventre ceti tribus diebus, et tribus noctibus, sic erit Filius hominis in corde terrae tribus diebus et tribus noctibus.

41 Viri Ninivitae surgent in judicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabunt eam: quia poenitentiam egerunt in praedicatione Jonae, et ecce plus quam Jonas hic.

42 Regina austri surget in judicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabit eam: quia venit a finibus terrae audire sapientiam Salomonis, et ecce plus quam Salomon hic.

43 Cum autem immundus spiritus exierit ab homine, ambulat per loca arida, quaerens requiem, et non invenit.

44 Tunc dicit: Revertar in domum meam, unde exivi. Et veniens invenit eam vacantem, scopis mundatam, et ornatam.

45 Tunc vadit, et assumit septem alios spiritus secum nequiores se, et intrantes habitant ibi: et fiunt novissima hominis illius pejora prioribus. Sic erit et generationi huic pessimae.

46 Adhuc eo loquente ad turbas, ecce mater ejus et fratres stabant foris, quaerentes loqui ei.

47 Dixit autem ei quidam: Ecce mater tua, et fratres tui foris stant quaerentes te.

48 At ipse respondens dicenti sibi, ait: Quae est mater mea, et qui sunt fratres mei?

49 Et extendens manum in discipulos suos, dixit: Ecce mater mea, et fratres mei.

50 Quicumque enim fecerit voluntatem Patris mei, qui in caelis est, ipse meus frater, et soror, et mater est.

13 In illo die exiens Jesus de domo, sedebat secus mare.

Et congregatae sunt ad eum turbae multae, ita ut naviculam ascendens sederet: et omnis turba stabat in littore,

et locutus est eis multa in parabolis, dicens: Ecce exiit qui seminat, seminare.

Et dum seminat, quaedam ceciderunt secus viam, et venerunt volucres caeli, et comederunt ea.

Alia autem ceciderunt in petrosa, ubi non habebant terram multam: et continuo exorta sunt, quia non habebant altitudinem terrae:

sole autem orto aestuaverunt; et quia non habebant radicem, aruerunt.

Alia autem ceciderunt in spinas: et creverunt spinae, et suffocaverunt ea.

Alia autem ceciderunt in terram bonam: et dabant fructum, aliud centesimum, aliud sexagesimum, aliud trigesimum.

Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.

10 Et accedentes discipuli dixerunt ei: Quare in parabolis loqueris eis?

11 Qui respondens, ait illis: Quia vobis datum est nosse mysteria regni caelorum: illis autem non est datum.

12 Qui enim habet, dabitur ei, et abundabit: qui autem non habet, et quod habet auferetur ab eo.

13 Ideo in parabolis loquor eis: quia videntes non vident, et audientes non audiunt, neque intelligunt.

14 Et adimpletur in eis prophetia Isaiae, dicentis: Auditu audietis, et non intelligetis: et videntes videbitis, et non videbitis.

15 Incrassatum est enim cor populi hujus, et auribus graviter audierunt, et oculos suos clauserunt: nequando videant oculis, et auribus audiant, et corde intelligant, et convertantur, et sanem eos.

16 Vestri autem beati oculi quia vident, et aures vestrae quia audiunt.

17 Amen quippe dico vobis, quia multi prophetae et justi cupierunt videre quae videtis, et non viderunt: et audire quae auditis, et non audierunt.

18 Vos ergo audite parabolam seminantis.

19 Omnis qui audit verbum regni, et non intelligit, venit malus, et rapit quod seminatum est in corde ejus: hic est qui secus viam seminatus est.

20 Qui autem super petrosa seminatus est, hic est qui verbum audit, et continuo cum gaudio accipit illud:

21 non habet autem in se radicem, sed est temporalis: facta autem tribulatione et persecutione propter verbum, continuo scandalizatur.

22 Qui autem seminatus est in spinis, hic est qui verbum audit, et sollicitudo saeculi istius, et fallacia divitiarum suffocat verbum, et sine fructu efficitur.

23 Qui vero in terram bonam seminatus est, hic est qui audit verbum, et intelligit, et fructum affert, et facit aliud quidem centesimum, aliud autem sexagesimum, aliud vero trigesimum.

24 Aliam parabolam proposuit illis, dicens: Simile factum est regnum caelorum homini, qui seminavit bonum semen in agro suo:

25 cum autem dormirent homines, venit inimicus ejus, et superseminavit zizania in medio tritici, et abiit.

26 Cum autem crevisset herba, et fructum fecisset, tunc apparuerunt et zizania.

27 Accedentes autem servi patrisfamilias, dixerunt ei: Domine, nonne bonum semen seminasti in agro tuo? unde ergo habet zizania?

28 Et ait illis: Inimicus homo hoc fecit. Servi autem dixerunt ei: Vis, imus, et colligimus ea?

29 Et ait: Non: ne forte colligentes zizania, eradicetis simul cum eis et triticum.

30 Sinite utraque crescere usque ad messem, et in tempore messis dicam messoribus: Colligite primum zizania, et alligate ea in fasciculos ad comburendum: triticum autem congregate in horreum meum.

31 Aliam parabolam proposuit eis dicens: Simile est regnum caelorum grano sinapis, quod accipiens homo seminavit in agro suo:

32 quod minimum quidem est omnibus seminibus: cum autem creverit, majus est omnibus oleribus, et fit arbor, ita ut volucres caeli veniant, et habitent in ramis ejus.

33 Aliam parabolam locutus est eis: Simile est regnum caelorum fermento, quod acceptum mulier abscondit in farinae satis tribus, donec fermentatum est totum.

34 Haec omnia locutus est Jesus in parabolis ad turbas: et sine parabolis non loquebatur eis:

35 ut impleretur quod dictum erat per prophetam dicentem: Aperiam in parabolis os meum; eructabo abscondita a constitutione mundi.

36 Tunc, dimissis turbis, venit in domum: et accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes: Edissere nobis parabolam zizaniorum agri.

37 Qui respondens ait illis: Qui seminat bonum semen, est Filius hominis.

38 Ager autem est mundus. Bonum vero semen, hi sunt filii regni. Zizania autem, filii sunt nequam.

39 Inimicus autem, qui seminavit ea, est diabolus. Messis vero, consummatio saeculi est. Messores autem, angeli sunt.

40 Sicut ergo colliguntur zizania, et igni comburuntur: sic erit in consummatione saeculi.

41 Mittet Filius hominis angelos suos, et colligent de regno ejus omnia scandala, et eos qui faciunt iniquitatem:

42 et mittent eos in caminum ignis. Ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.

43 Tunc justi fulgebunt sicut sol in regno Patris eorum. Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.

44 Simile est regnum caelorum thesauro abscondito in agro: quem qui invenit homo, abscondit, et prae gaudio illius vadit, et vendit universa quae habet, et emit agrum illum.

45 Iterum simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatori, quaerenti bonas margaritas.

46 Inventa autem una pretiosa margarita, abiit, et vendidit omnia quae habuit, et emit eam.

47 Iterum simile est regnum caelorum sagenae missae in mare, et ex omni genere piscium congreganti.

48 Quam, cum impleta esset, educentes, et secus littus sedentes, elegerunt bonos in vasa, malos autem foras miserunt.

49 Sic erit in consummatione saeculi: exibunt angeli, et separabunt malos de medio justorum,

50 et mittent eos in caminum ignis: ibi erit fletus, et stridor dentium.

51 Intellexistis haec omnia? Dicunt ei: Etiam.

52 Ait illis: Ideo omnis scriba doctus in regno caelorum, similis est homini patrifamilias, qui profert de thesauro suo nova et vetera.

53 Et factum est, cum consummasset Jesus parabolas istas, transiit inde.

54 Et veniens in patriam suam, docebat eos in synagogis eorum, ita ut mirarentur, et dicerent: Unde huic sapientia haec, et virtutes?

55 Nonne hic est fabri filius? nonne mater ejus dicitur Maria, et fratres ejus, Jacobus, et Joseph, et Simon, et Judas?

56 et sorores ejus, nonne omnes apud nos sunt? unde ergo huic omnia ista?

57 Et scandalizabantur in eo. Jesus autem dixit eis: Non est propheta sine honore, nisi in patria sua, et in domo sua.

58 Et non fecit ibi virtutes multas propter incredulitatem illorum.

14 In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Jesu:

et ait pueris suis: Hic est Joannes Baptista: ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo.

Herodes enim tenuit Joannem, et alligavit eum: et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui.

Dicebat enim illi Joannes: Non licet tibi habere eam.

Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum: quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.

Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi:

unde cum juramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo.

At illa praemonita a matre sua: Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistae.

Et contristatus est rex: propter juramentum autem, et eos qui pariter recumbebant, jussit dari.

10 Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere.

11 Et allatum est caput ejus in disco, et datum est puellae, et attulit matri suae.

12 Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud: et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu.

13 Quod cum audisset Jesus, secessit inde in navicula, in locum desertum seorsum: et cum audissent turbae, secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.

14 Et exiens vidit turbam multam, et misertus est eis, et curavit languidos eorum.

15 Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes: Desertus est locus, et hora jam praeteriit: dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas.

16 Jesus autem dixit eis: Non habent necesse ire: date illis vos manducare.

17 Responderunt ei: Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces.

18 Qui ait eis: Afferte mihi illos huc.

19 Et cum jussisset turbam discumbere super foenum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in caelum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem turbis.

20 Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et tulerunt reliquias, duodecim cophinos fragmentorum plenos.

21 Manducantium autem fuit numerus quinque millia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.

22 Et statim compulit Jesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et praecedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas.

23 Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare. Vespere autem facto solus erat ibi:

24 navicula autem in medio mari jactabatur fluctibus: erat enim contrarius ventus.

25 Quarta enim vigilia noctis, venit ad eos ambulans super mare.

26 Et videntes eum super mare ambulantem, turbati sunt, dicentes: Quia phantasma est. Et prae timore clamaverunt.

27 Statimque Jesus locutus est eis, dicens: Habete fiduciam: ego sum, nolite timere.

28 Respondens autem Petrus, dixit: Domine, si tu es, jube me ad te venire super aquas.

29 At ipse ait: Veni. Et descendens Petrus de navicula, ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Jesum.

30 Videns vero ventum validum, timuit: et cum coepisset mergi, clamavit dicens: Domine, salvum me fac.

31 Et continuo Jesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum: et ait illi: Modicae fidei, quare dubitasti?

32 Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavit ventus.

33 Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes: Vere Filius Dei es.

34 Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar.

35 Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes:

36 et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti ejus tangerent. Et quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.

15 Tunc accesserunt ad eum ab Jerosolymis scribae et pharisaei, dicentes:

Quare discipuli tui transgrediuntur traditionem seniorum? non enim lavant manus suas cum panem manducant.

Ipse autem respondens ait illis: Quare et vos transgredimini mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram? Nam Deus dixit:

Honora patrem, et matrem: et, Qui maledixerit patri, vel matri, morte moriatur.

Vos autem dicitis: Quicumque dixerit patri, vel matri: Munus, quodcumque est ex me, tibi proderit:

et non honorificabit patrem suum, aut matrem suam: et irritum fecistis mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram.

Hypocritae, bene prophetavit de vobis Isaias, dicens:

Populus hic labiis me honorat: cor autem eorum longe est a me.

Sine causa autem colunt me, docentes doctrinas et mandata hominum.

10 Et convocatis ad se turbis, dixit eis: Audite, et intelligite.

11 Non quod intrat in os, coinquinat hominem: sed quod procedit ex ore, hoc coinquinat hominem.

12 Tunc accedentes discipuli ejus, dixerunt ei: Scis quia pharisaei audito verbo hoc, scandalizati sunt?

13 At ille respondens ait: Omnis plantatio, quam non plantavit Pater meus caelestis, eradicabitur.

24 Ipse autem respondens ait: Non sum missus nisi ad oves, quae perierunt domus Israel.

25 At illa venit, et adoravit eum, dicens: Domine, adjuva me.

26 Qui respondens ait: Non est bonum sumere panem filiorum, et mittere canibus.

27 At illa dixit: Etiam Domine: nam et catelli edunt de micis quae cadunt de mensa dominorum suorum.

28 Tunc respondens Jesus, ait illi: O mulier, magna est fides tua: fiat tibi sicut vis. Et sanata est filia ejus ex illa hora.

29 Et cum transisset inde Jesus, venit secus mare Galilaeae: et ascendens in montem, sedebat ibi.

30 Et accesserunt ad eum turbae multae, habentes secum mutos, caecos, claudos, debiles, et alios multos: et projecerunt eos ad pedes ejus, et curavit eos,

31 ita ut turbae mirarentur, videntes mutos loquentes, claudos ambulantes, caecos videntes: et magnificabant Deum Israel.

32 Jesus autem, convocatis discipulis suis, dixit: Misereor turbae, quia triduo jam perseverant mecum, et non habent quod manducent: et dimittere eos jejunos nolo, ne deficiant in via.

33 Et dicunt ei discipuli: Unde ergo nobis in deserto panes tantos, ut saturemus turbam tantam?

34 Et ait illis Jesus: Quot habetis panes? At illi dixerunt: Septem, et paucos pisciculos.

18 Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.

19 Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis: et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.

24 Tunc Jesus dixit discipulis suis: Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me.

25 Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet eam: qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.

26 Quid enim prodest homini, si mundum universum lucretur, animae vero suae detrimentum patiatur? aut quam dabit homo commutationem pro anima sua?

27 Filius enim hominis venturus est in gloria Patris sui cum angelis suis: et tunc reddet unicuique secundum opera ejus.

28 Amen dico vobis, sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem, donec videant Filium hominis venientem in regno suo.

17 Et post dies sex assumit Jesus Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum:

et transfiguratus est ante eos. Et resplenduit facies ejus sicut sol: vestimenta autem ejus facta sunt alba sicut nix.

16 Respondens autem Jesus, ait: O generatio incredula, et perversa, quousque ero vobiscum? usquequo patiar vos? Afferte huc illum ad me.

17 Et increpavit illum Jesus, et exiit ab eo daemonium, et curatus est puer ex illa hora.

18 Tunc accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum secreto, et dixerunt: Quare nos non potuimus ejicere illum?

19 Dixit illis Jesus: Propter incredulitatem vestram. Amen quippe dico vobis, si habueritis fidem sicut granum sinapis, dicetis monti huic: Transi hinc illuc, et transibit, et nihil impossibile erit vobis.

20 Hoc autem genus non ejicitur nisi per orationem et jejunium.

21 Conversantibus autem eis in Galilaea, dixit illis Jesus: Filius hominis tradendus est in manus hominum:

22 et occident eum, et tertia die resurget. Et contristati sunt vehementer.

23 Et cum venissent Capharnaum, accesserunt qui didrachma accipiebant ad Petrum, et dixerunt ei: Magister vester non solvit didrachma?

24 Ait: Etiam. Et cum intrasset in domum, praevenit eum Jesus, dicens: Quid tibi videtur Simon? reges terrae a quibus accipiunt tributum vel censum? a filiis suis, an ab alienis?

25 Et ille dixit: Ab alienis. Dixit illi Jesus: Ergo liberi sunt filii.

26 Ut autem non scandalizemus eos, vade ad mare, et mitte hamum: et eum piscem, qui primus ascenderit, tolle: et aperto ore ejus, invenies staterem: illum sumens, da eis pro me et te.

18 In illa hora accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes: Quis, putas, major est in regno caelorum?

Et advocans Jesus parvulum, statuit eum in medio eorum,

et dixit: Amen dico vobis, nisi conversi fueritis, et efficiamini sicut parvuli, non intrabitis in regnum caelorum.

Quicumque ergo humiliaverit se sicut parvulus iste, hic est major in regno caelorum.

Et qui susceperit unum parvulum talem in nomine meo, me suscipit:

qui autem scandalizaverit unum de pusillis istis, qui in me credunt, expedit ei ut suspendatur mola asinaria in collo ejus, et demergatur in profundum maris.

Vae mundo a scandalis! Necesse est enim ut veniant scandala: verumtamen vae homini illi, per quem scandalum venit.

Si autem manus tua, vel pes tuus scandalizat te, abscide eum, et projice abs te: bonum tibi est ad vitam ingredi debilem, vel claudum, quam duas manus vel duos pedes habentem mitti in ignem aeternum.

Et si oculus tuus scandalizat te, erue eum, et projice abs te: bonum tibi est cum uno oculo in vitam intrare, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis.

10 Videte ne contemnatis unum ex his pusillis: dico enim vobis, quia angeli eorum in caelis semper vident faciem Patris mei, qui in caelis est.

11 Venit enim Filius hominis salvare quod perierat.

12 Quid vobis videtur? si fuerint alicui centum oves, et erravit una ex eis: nonne relinquit nonaginta novem in montibus, et vadit quaerere eam quae erravit?

13 Et si contigerit ut inveniat eam: amen dico vobis, quia gaudet super eam magis quam super nonaginta novem, quae non erraverunt.

14 Sic non est voluntas ante Patrem vestrum, qui in caelis est, ut pereat unus de pusillis istis.

15 Si autem peccaverit in te frater tuus, vade, et corripe eum inter te, et ipsum solum: si te audierit, lucratus eris fratrem tuum.

16 Si autem te non audierit, adhibe tecum adhuc unum, vel duos, ut in ore duorum, vel trium testium stet omne verbum.

17 Quod si non audierit eos: dic ecclesiae. Si autem ecclesiam non audierit, sit tibi sicut ethnicus et publicanus.

18 Amen dico vobis, quaecumque alligaveritis super terram, erunt ligata et in caelo: et quaecumque solveritis super terram, erunt soluta et in caelo.

19 Iterum dico vobis, quia si duo ex vobis consenserint super terram, de omni re quamcumque petierint, fiet illis a Patre meo, qui in caelis est.

20 Ubi enim sunt duo vel tres congregati in nomine meo, ibi sum in medio eorum.

21 Tunc accedens Petrus ad eum, dixit: Domine, quoties peccabit in me frater meus, et dimittam ei? usque septies?

22 Dicit illi Jesus: Non dico tibi usque septies: sed usque septuagies septies.

23 Ideo assimilatum est regnum caelorum homini regi, qui voluit rationem ponere cum servis suis.

24 Et cum coepisset rationem ponere, oblatus est ei unus, qui debebat ei decem millia talenta.

25 Cum autem non haberet unde redderet, jussit eum dominus ejus venundari, et uxorem ejus, et filios, et omnia quae habebat, et reddi.

26 Procidens autem servus ille, orabat eum, dicens: Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.

27 Misertus autem dominus servi illius, dimisit eum, et debitum dimisit ei.

28 Egressus autem servus ille invenit unum de conservis suis, qui debebat ei centum denarios: et tenens suffocavit eum, dicens: Redde quod debes.

29 Et procidens conservus ejus, rogabat eum, dicens: Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.

30 Ille autem noluit: sed abiit, et misit eum in carcerem donec redderet debitum.

31 Videntes autem conservi ejus quae fiebant, contristati sunt valde: et venerunt, et narraverunt domino suo omnia quae facta fuerant.

32 Tunc vocavit illum dominus suus: et ait illi: Serve nequam, omne debitum dimisi tibi quoniam rogasti me:

33 nonne ergo oportuit et te misereri conservi tui, sicut et ego tui misertus sum?

34 Et iratus dominus ejus tradidit eum tortoribus, quoadusque redderet universum debitum.

35 Sic et Pater meus caelestis faciet vobis, si non remiseritis unusquisque fratri suo de cordibus vestris.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L) 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)

16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)

24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!

26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(AM)
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c](AN)

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)

Jesus and John the Baptist(AU)

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(AV) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[d]

When John,(AW) who was in prison,(AX) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(AY) or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[e] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(AZ) Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(BA)

As John’s(BB) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(BC) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(BD) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,(BE)
    who will prepare your way before you.’[f](BF)

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[g] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(BG) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(BH) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(BI)

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating(BJ) nor drinking,(BK) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(BL) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Woe on Unrepentant Towns(BM)

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(BN) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(BO) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(BP) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(BQ) 23 And you, Capernaum,(BR) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[h](BS) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(BT)

The Father Revealed in the Son(BU)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(BV) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(BW) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me(BX) by my Father.(BY) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(BZ)

28 “Come to me,(CA) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(CB) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(CC) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(CD) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(CE)

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(CF)(CG)

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(CH) and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(CI)

He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(CJ) He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(CK) Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(CL) and yet are innocent? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(CM) If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[i](CN) you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man(CO) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(CP) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(CQ)

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(CR) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(CS) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(CT)

God’s Chosen Servant

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(CU) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(CV) 17 This was to fulfill(CW) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
    the one I love, in whom I delight;(CX)
I will put my Spirit on him,(CY)
    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
    no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21     In his name the nations will put their hope.”[j](CZ)

Jesus and Beelzebul(DA)

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.(DB) 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”(DC)

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(DD) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(DE)

25 Jesus knew their thoughts(DF) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(DG) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(DH) by whom do your people(DI) drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God(DJ) has come upon you.

29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(DK) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(DL) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(DM) or in the age to come.(DN)

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(DO) 34 You brood of vipers,(DP) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(DQ) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(DR)

The Sign of Jonah(DS)(DT)

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(DU) from you.”(DV)

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(DW) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(DX) so the Son of Man(DY) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(DZ) 41 The men of Nineveh(EA) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(EB) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(EC) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(ED) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(EE)

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(EF) and brothers(EG) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(EH) is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower(EI)(EJ)(EK)

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house(EL) and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat(EM) and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred,(EN) sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”(EO)

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven(EP) has been given to you,(EQ) but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(ER) 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
    though hearing, they do not hear or understand.(ES)

14 In them is fulfilled(ET) the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
    you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
    they hardly hear with their ears,
    and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[k](EU)

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.(EV) 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see(EW) but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom(EX) and does not understand it, the evil one(EY) comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.(EZ) 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth(FA) choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”(FB)

The Parable of the Weeds

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(FC) a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”(FD)

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(FE)(FF)

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(FG) a mustard seed,(FH) which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”(FI)

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(FJ) yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[l] of flour(FK) until it worked all through the dough.”(FL)

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.(FM) 35 So was fulfilled(FN) what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables,
    I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”[m](FO)

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable(FP) of the weeds in the field.”

37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.(FQ) 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,(FR) 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest(FS) is the end of the age,(FT) and the harvesters are angels.(FU)

40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man(FV) will send out his angels,(FW) and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(FX) 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun(FY) in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.(FZ)

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like(GA) treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.(GB)

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like(GC) a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like(GD) a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds(GE) of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous(GF) 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(GG)

51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

A Prophet Without Honor(GH)

53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(GI) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(GJ) and they were amazed.(GK) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(GL) Isn’t his mother’s(GM) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(GN) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(GO) at him.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(GP)

58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

John the Baptist Beheaded(GQ)

14 At that time Herod(GR) the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,(GS) and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist;(GT) he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(GU) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(GV) for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(GW) Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(GX)

On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(GY) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(GZ) Then they went and told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(HA)(HB)

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(HC) and healed their sick.(HD)

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves(HE) of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(HF) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water(HG)(HH)

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(HI) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(HJ) they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(HK) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(HL)

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(HM) he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(HN)

34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(HO) and all who touched it were healed.

That Which Defiles(HP)

15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(HQ)

Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[n](HR) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[o](HS) But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.(HT)[p](HU)

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(HV) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(HW)

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(HX) will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[q](HY) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(HZ)

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”(IA)

16 “Are you still so dull?”(IB) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(IC) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(ID) 20 These are what defile a person;(IE) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(IF)

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(IG) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(IH) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(II)

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(IJ)

25 The woman came and knelt before him.(IK) “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(IL) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(IM)(IN)(IO)

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(IP) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(IQ)

32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(IR) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
