¹⁶Cum autem jejunatis, nolite fieri sicut hypocritae, tristes. Exterminant enim facies suas, ut appareant hominibus jejunantes. Amen dico vobis, quia receperunt mercedem suam.

¹⁷Tu autem, cum jejunas, unge caput tuum, et faciem tuam lava,

¹⁸ne videaris hominibus jejunans, sed Patri tuo, qui est in abscondito: et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi.

¹⁹Nolite thesaurizare vobis thesauros in terra: ubi aerugo, et tinea demolitur: et ubi fures effodiunt, et furantur.

²⁰Thesaurizate autem vobis thesauros in caelo, ubi neque aerugo, neque tinea demolitur, et ubi fures non effodiunt, nec furantur.

²¹Ubi enim est thesaurus tuus, ibi est et cor tuum.

Fasting

¹⁶“When you fast,^(A) do not look somber^(B) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ¹⁷But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, ¹⁸so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.^(C)

Treasures in Heaven^(D)

¹⁹“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,^(E) where moths and vermin destroy,^(F) and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,^(G) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.^(H) ²¹For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.^(I)
