⁵⁵ “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?^(A) Isn’t his mother’s^(B) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers^(C) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

⁵ and that he appeared to Cephas,^[a](A) and then to the Twelve.^{(B) 6} After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.^{(C) 7} Then he appeared to James,^(D) then to all the apostles,^(E)

¹⁹ I saw none of the other apostles—only James,^(A) the Lord’s brother.

⁹ James,^(A) Cephas^[a](B) and John, those esteemed as pillars,^(C) gave me and Barnabas^(D) the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me.^(E) They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles,^(F) and they to the circumcised.

¹² For before certain men came from James,^(A) he used to eat with the Gentiles.^(B) But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.^(C)

⁶ The apostles and elders met to consider this question. ⁷ After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.^{(A) 8} God, who knows the heart,^(B) showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them,^(C) just as he did to us. ⁹ He did not discriminate between us and them,^(D) for he purified their hearts by faith.^(E)

¹⁸ The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James,^(A) and all the elders^(B) were present.
