¹⁶The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

New International Version

¹⁶the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”^[a]^(A)

¹⁹And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

¹⁹This is the verdict: Light^(A) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^(B)
