When the wall had been rebuilt and I had positioned the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, I then put in charge over Jerusalem my brother Hanani and Hananiah[a] the chief of the citadel, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many do. I[b] said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened in the early morning,[c] until those who are standing guard close the doors and lock them.[d] Position residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their guard stations and some near their homes.” Now the city was spread out[e] and large, and there were not a lot of people in it.[f] At that time houses had not been rebuilt. My God placed it on my heart to gather the leaders,[g] the officials, and the ordinary people so they could be enrolled on the basis of genealogy. I found the genealogical records[h] of those who had formerly returned. Here is what I found written in that record:[i]

These are the people[j] of the province who returned[k] from the captivity of the exiles, whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had forced into exile.[l] They returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each to his own city. They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.

The number of Israelite men[m] was as follows:

60 All the temple servants and the descendants of the servants of Solomon, 392.

61 These are the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon, and Immer (although they were unable to certify[r] their family connection[s] or their ancestry,[t] as to whether they were really from Israel):

62 the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants of Tobiah, and the descendants of Nekoda, 642.

63 And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai (who had married a woman from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name). 64 They searched for their records in the genealogical materials, but none were found. They were therefore excluded[u] from the priesthood. 65 The governor[v] instructed them not to eat any of the sacred food until there was a priest who could consult[w] the Urim and Thummim.

66 The entire group numbered 42,360— 67 not counting their 7,337 male and female servants. They also had 245 male and female singers. 68 They had 736 horses, 245 mules, 69 (7:68)[x] 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys. 70 Some of the family leaders[y] contributed to the work. The governor contributed to the treasury 1,000 gold drachmas,[z] 50 bowls, and 530 priestly garments. 71 Some of the family leaders gave to the project treasury 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 silver minas. 72 What the rest of the people gave amounted to 20,000 gold drachmas, 2,000 silver minas, and 67 priestly garments.

73 The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all the rest of Israel lived in their cities.

The People Respond to the Reading of the Law

When the seventh month arrived and the Israelites[aa] were settled in their towns,[ab] all the people gathered together[ac] in the plaza which was in front of the Water Gate. They asked[ad] Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly which included men and women and all those able to understand what they heard. (This happened on the first day of the seventh month.) So he read it before the plaza in front of the Water Gate from dawn till noon[ae] before the men and women and those children who could understand.[af] All the people were eager to hear[ag] the book of the law.

Ezra the scribe stood on a towering wooden platform[ah] constructed for this purpose. Standing near him on his right were Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Masseiah. On his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. Ezra opened the book in plain view[ai] of all the people, for he was elevated above all the people. When he opened the book,[aj] all the people stood up. Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people replied “Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—all of whom were Levites[ak]—were teaching the people the law, as the people remained standing. They read from the book of God’s law, explaining it[al] and imparting insight. Thus the people[am] gained understanding from what was read.

Then Nehemiah the governor,[an] Ezra the priestly scribe,[ao] and the Levites who were imparting understanding to the people said to all of them,[ap] “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping when they heard the words of the law. 10 He said to them, “Go and eat delicacies and drink sweet drinks and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared. For this day is holy to our Lord.[aq] Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

11 Then the Levites quieted all the people saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy. Do not grieve.” 12 So all the people departed to eat and drink and to share their food[ar] with others[as] and to enjoy tremendous joy,[at] for they had gained insight in the matters that had been made known to them.

13 On the second day of the month the family leaders[au] met with[av] Ezra the scribe, together with all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to consider the words of the law. 14 They discovered written in the law that the Lord had commanded through[aw] Moses that the Israelites should live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month, 15 and that they should make a proclamation and disseminate this message[ax] in all their cities and in Jerusalem: “Go to the hill country and bring back olive branches and branches of wild olive trees, myrtle trees, date palms, and other leafy trees to construct temporary shelters, as it is written.”

16 So the people went out and brought these things[ay] back and constructed temporary shelters for themselves, each on his roof and in his courtyard and in the courtyards of the temple[az] of God and in the plaza of the Water Gate and the plaza of the Ephraim Gate. 17 So all the assembly which had returned from the exile constructed temporary shelters and lived in them. The Israelites had not done so from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day. Everyone experienced very great joy.[ba] 18 Ezra[bb] read in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day to the last.[bc] They observed the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day they held an assembly[bd] as was required.[be]

The People Acknowledge Their Sin before God

On the twenty-fourth day of this same month the Israelites assembled; they were fasting and wearing sackcloth, their heads covered with dust. Those truly of Israelite descent[bf] separated from all the foreigners,[bg] standing and confessing their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.[bh] For one-fourth of the day they stood in their place and read from the book of the law of the Lord their God, and for another fourth they were confessing their sins[bi] and worshiping the Lord their God. Then the Levites—Jeshua, Binnui,[bj] Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Kenani—stood on the steps and called out loudly[bk] to the Lord their God. The Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—said, “Stand up and bless the Lord your God!”

“May you be blessed, O Lord our God, from age to age.[bl] May your glorious name[bm] be blessed; may it be lifted up above all blessing and praise. You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens,[bn] along with all their multitude of stars,[bo] the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You impart life to them all, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

“You are the Lord God who chose Abram and brought him forth from Ur of the Chaldeans. You changed his name to Abraham. When you perceived that his heart was faithful toward you, you established a[bp] covenant with him to give his descendants[bq] the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites. You have fulfilled your promise,[br] for you are righteous.

“You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea.[bs] 10 You performed awesome signs[bt] against Pharaoh, against his servants, and against all the people of his land, for you knew that the Egyptians[bu] had acted presumptuously[bv] against them. You made for yourself a name that is celebrated to this day. 11 You split the sea before them, and they crossed through[bw] the sea on dry ground. But you threw their pursuers[bx] into the depths, like a stone into surging[by] waters. 12 You guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and with a pillar of fire by night to illumine for them the path they were to travel.

13 “You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You provided them with just judgments, true laws, and good statutes and commandments. 14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath; you issued commandments, statutes, and laws to them through[bz] Moses your servant. 15 You provided bread from heaven for them in their time of hunger, and you brought forth water from the rock for them in their time of thirst. You told them to enter in order to possess the land that you had sworn[ca] to give them.

16 “But they—our ancestors[cb]—behaved presumptuously; they rebelled[cc] and did not obey your commandments. 17 They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt.[cd] But you are a God of forgiveness, merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and unfailing in your loyal love.[ce] You did not abandon them, 18 even when they made a cast image of a calf for themselves and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up from Egypt,’ or when they committed atrocious[cf] blasphemies.

19 “Due to your great compassion you did not abandon them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud did not stop guiding them in the path by day,[cg] nor did the pillar of fire stop illuminating for them by night the path on which they should travel. 20 You imparted your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths; you provided water for their thirst. 21 For forty years you sustained them. Even in the wilderness they never lacked anything. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

22 “You gave them kingdoms and peoples, and you allocated them to every corner of the land.[ch] They inherited the land of King Sihon of Heshbon[ci] and the land of King Og of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their descendants like the stars of the sky. You brought them to the land you had told their ancestors to enter in order to possess. 24 Their descendants[cj] entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased. 25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took possession of houses full of all sorts of good things—wells previously dug, vineyards, olive trees, and fruit trees in abundance. They ate until they were full[ck] and grew fat. They enjoyed to the full your great goodness.

26 “Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law.[cl] They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies. 27 Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who oppressed them. But in the time of their distress they called to you, and you heard from heaven. In your abundant compassion you provided them with deliverers to rescue them from[cm] their adversaries.

28 “Then, when they were at rest again, they went back to doing evil before you. Then you abandoned them to[cn] their enemies, and they gained dominion over them. When they again cried out to you, in your compassion you heard from heaven and rescued them time and again. 29 And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances—those by which an individual, if he obeys them,[co] will live. They boldly turned from you;[cp] they rebelled[cq] and did not obey. 30 You prolonged your kindness[cr] with them for many years, and you solemnly admonished them by your Spirit through your prophets. Still they paid no attention,[cs] so you delivered them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.[ct] 31 However, due to your abundant mercy you did not do away with them altogether; you did not abandon them. For you are a merciful and compassionate God.

32 “So now, our God—the great, powerful, and awesome God, who keeps covenant fidelity[cu]—do not regard as inconsequential[cv] all the hardship that has befallen us—our kings, our leaders, our priests, our prophets, our ancestors, and all your people—from the days of the kings of Assyria until this very day. 33 You are righteous with regard to all that has happened to us, for you have acted faithfully.[cw] It is we who have been in the wrong! 34 Our kings, our leaders, our priests, and our ancestors have not kept your law. They have not paid attention to your commandments or your testimonies by which you have solemnly admonished them. 35 Even when they were in their kingdom and benefiting from your incredible[cx] goodness that you had lavished[cy] on them in the spacious and fertile land you had set[cz] before them, they did not serve you, nor did they turn from their evil practices.

36 “So today we are slaves! In the very land you gave to our ancestors to eat its fruit and to enjoy[da] its good things—we are slaves. 37 Its abundant produce goes to the kings you have placed over us due to our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they see fit,[db] and we are in great distress!

The People Pledge to be Faithful

38 (10:1)[dc] “Because of all this we are entering into[dd] a binding covenant in written form;[de] our leaders, our Levites, and our priests have affixed their names[df] on the sealed document.”

A different option, however, is suggested by the translation distincte (“distinctly”) of the Vulgate (cf. KJV, ASV). If the Hebrew word means “distinctly” here, it would imply that the readers paid particular attention to such things as word-grouping and pronunciation so as to be sure that the listeners had every opportunity to understand the message that was being read. Yet another view is found in the Talmud, which understands translation of the Hebrew text into Aramaic to be what is in view here. The following explanation of Neh 8:8 is found in b. Megillah 3a: “‘And they read in the book, in the law of God’: this indicates the [Hebrew] text; ‘with an interpretation’: this indicates the targum; ‘and they gave the sense’: this indicates the verse stops; ‘and caused them to understand the reading’: this indicates the accentuation, or, according to another version, the Masoretic notes.” However, this ancient rabbinic view that the origins of the Targum are found in Neh 8:8 is debatable. It is not clear that the practice of paraphrasing the Hebrew biblical text into Aramaic in order to accommodate the needs of those Jews who were not at home in the Hebrew language developed this early. The translation of מְפֹרָשׁ adopted above (i.e., “explaining it”) understands the word to have in mind an explanatory function (cf. NAB, NCV, TEV, NLT) rather than one of translation.

After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers,(A) the musicians(B) and the Levites(C) were appointed. I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani,(D) along with Hananiah(E) the commander of the citadel,(F) because he was a man of integrity and feared(G) God more than most people do. I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.”

The List of the Exiles Who Returned(H)

Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it,(I) and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. 70 Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics[b] of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests. 71 Some of the heads of the families(Y) gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 darics[c] of gold and 2,200 minas[d] of silver. 72 The total given by the rest of the people was 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas[e] of silver and 67 garments for priests.(Z)

73 The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the temple servants,(AA) along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns.(AB)

Ezra Reads the Law

When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns,(AC) all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate.(AD) They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,(AE) which the Lord had commanded for Israel.

So on the first day of the seventh month(AF) Ezra the priest brought the Law(AG) before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate(AH) in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform(AI) built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.

Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing(AJ) above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands(AK) and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

The Levites(AL)—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed(AM) the people in the Law while the people were standing there. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[f] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites(AN) who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(AO) For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing(AP) prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy(AQ) of the Lord is your strength.”

11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”

12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,(AR) because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. 14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters(AS) during the festival of the seventh month 15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.[g]

16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate(AT) and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.(AU) 17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them.(AV) From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated(AW) it like this. And their joy was very great.

18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read(AX) from the Book of the Law(AY) of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation,(AZ) there was an assembly.(BA)

The Israelites Confess Their Sins

On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.(BB) Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners.(BC) They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors.(BD) They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the Lord their God. Standing on the stairs of the Levites(BE) were Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani. They cried out with loud voices to the Lord their God. And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah—said: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God,(BF) who is from everlasting to everlasting.[h]

“Blessed be your glorious name,(BG) and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the Lord.(BH) You made the heavens,(BI) even the highest heavens, and all their starry host,(BJ) the earth(BK) and all that is on it, the seas(BL) and all that is in them.(BM) You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven(BN) worship you.

“You are the Lord God, who chose Abram(BO) and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans(BP) and named him Abraham.(BQ) You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites.(BR) You have kept your promise(BS) because you are righteous.(BT)

“You saw the suffering of our ancestors in Egypt;(BU) you heard their cry at the Red Sea.[i](BV) 10 You sent signs(BW) and wonders(BX) against Pharaoh, against all his officials and all the people of his land, for you knew how arrogantly the Egyptians treated them. You made a name(BY) for yourself,(BZ) which remains to this day. 11 You divided the sea before them,(CA) so that they passed through it on dry ground, but you hurled their pursuers into the depths,(CB) like a stone into mighty waters.(CC) 12 By day(CD) you led(CE) them with a pillar of cloud,(CF) and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.

13 “You came down on Mount Sinai;(CG) you spoke(CH) to them from heaven.(CI) You gave them regulations and laws that are just(CJ) and right, and decrees and commands that are good.(CK) 14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath(CL) and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses. 15 In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven(CM) and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock;(CN) you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand(CO) to give them.(CP)

16 “But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked,(CQ) and they did not obey your commands.(CR) 17 They refused to listen and failed to remember(CS) the miracles(CT) you performed among them. They became stiff-necked(CU) and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery.(CV) But you are a forgiving God,(CW) gracious and compassionate,(CX) slow to anger(CY) and abounding in love.(CZ) Therefore you did not desert them,(DA) 18 even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf(DB) and said, ‘This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,’ or when they committed awful blasphemies.(DC)

19 “Because of your great compassion you did not abandon(DD) them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud(DE) did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take. 20 You gave your good Spirit(DF) to instruct(DG) them. You did not withhold your manna(DH) from their mouths, and you gave them water(DI) for their thirst. 21 For forty years(DJ) you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing,(DK) their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.(DL)

22 “You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon[j](DM) king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan.(DN) 23 You made their children as numerous as the stars in the sky,(DO) and you brought them into the land that you told their parents to enter and possess. 24 Their children went in and took possession of the land.(DP) You subdued(DQ) before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you gave the Canaanites into their hands, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased. 25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land;(DR) they took possession of houses filled with all kinds of good things,(DS) wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. They ate to the full and were well-nourished;(DT) they reveled in your great goodness.(DU)

26 “But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law.(DV) They killed(DW) your prophets,(DX) who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies.(DY) 27 So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies,(DZ) who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion(EA) you gave them deliverers,(EB) who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

28 “But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight.(EC) Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion(ED) you delivered them(EE) time after time.

29 “You warned(EF) them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant(EG) and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’(EH) Stubbornly they turned their backs(EI) on you, became stiff-necked(EJ) and refused to listen.(EK) 30 For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets.(EL) Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.(EM) 31 But in your great mercy you did not put an end(EN) to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful(EO) God.

32 “Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty(EP) and awesome,(EQ) who keeps his covenant of love,(ER) do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship(ES) that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. 33 In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous;(ET) you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.(EU) 34 Our kings,(EV) our leaders, our priests and our ancestors(EW) did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the statutes you warned them to keep. 35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness(EX) to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you(EY) or turn from their evil ways.

36 “But see, we are slaves(EZ) today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces. 37 Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.(FA)

The Agreement of the People

38 “In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement,(FB) putting it in writing,(FC) and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”[k]
