He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord (BA)in the company of Korah, but (BB)died for his own sin. And he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? (BC)Give to us a possession among our father's brothers.”

Moses (BD)brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “The daughters of Zelophehad (BE)are right. (BF)You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest (BG)kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel (BH)a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up into (BI)this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you also (BJ)shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 (BK)because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing (BL)to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are (BM)the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) 15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 “Let the Lord, (BN)the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17 who (BO)shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be (BP)as sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take (BQ)Joshua the son of Nun, a man (BR)in whom is the Spirit, and (BS)lay your hand on him. 19 Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall (BT)commission him in their sight. 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, (BU)that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. 21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (BV)by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.” 22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23 and he laid his hands on him and (BW)commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.

40 [f] So Moses told the people of Israel everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Men and Vows

30 Moses spoke to (DI)the heads of the tribes of the people of Israel, saying, “This is what the Lord has commanded. (DJ)If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or (DK)swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. (DL)He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Women and Vows

“If a woman vows a vow to the Lord and binds herself by a pledge, while within her father's house in her youth, and her father hears of her vow and of her pledge by which she has bound herself and says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand. But if her father opposes her on the day that he hears of it, no vow of hers, no pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand. And the Lord will forgive her, because her father opposed her.

“If she marries a husband, while under her (DM)vows or any thoughtless utterance of her lips by which she has bound herself, and her husband hears of it and says nothing to her on the day that he hears, then her vows shall stand, and her pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. But if, on the day that her husband comes to hear of it, he opposes her, then he makes void her (DN)vow that was on her, and the thoughtless utterance of her lips by which she bound herself. (DO)And the Lord will forgive her. (But any vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, anything by which she has bound herself, shall stand against her.) 10 And if she vowed in her husband's house or bound herself by a pledge with an oath, 11 and her husband heard of it and said nothing to her and did not oppose her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she bound herself shall stand. 12 But if her husband makes them null and void on the day that he hears them, then whatever proceeds out of her lips concerning her vows or concerning her pledge of herself shall not stand. Her husband has made them void, and (DP)the Lord will forgive her. 13 Any vow and any binding oath to afflict herself,[g] her husband may establish,[h] or her husband may make void. 14 But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he establishes all her vows or all her pledges that are upon her. He has established them, because he said nothing to her on the day that he heard of them. 15 But if he makes them null and void after he has heard of them, then (DQ)he shall bear her iniquity.”

16 These are the statutes that the Lord commanded Moses about a man and his wife and about a father and his daughter while she is in her youth within her father's house.

Vengeance on Midian

31 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (DR)“Avenge the people of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall (DS)be gathered to your people.” So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the Lord's vengeance on Midian. You shall send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war.” So there were provided, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand (DT)armed for war. And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the vessels of the sanctuary and (DU)the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. They warred against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and (DV)killed every male. They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain, (DW)Evi, Rekem, (DX)Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. And they also killed (DY)Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. And the people of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones, and they took as plunder all their cattle, their flocks, and all their goods. 10 All their cities in the places where they lived, and all their (DZ)encampments, they burned with fire, 11 (EA)and took all the spoil and all the plunder, both of man and of beast. 12 Then they brought the captives and the plunder and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the people of Israel, at the camp on (EB)the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

13 Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the chiefs of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp. 14 And Moses was angry with (EC)the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. 15 Moses said to them, “Have you (ED)let all the women live? 16 Behold, (EE)these, (EF)on Balaam's advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the Lord in the incident of (EG)Peor, and so (EH)the plague came among the congregation of the Lord. 17 Now therefore, (EI)kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. 18 But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him (EJ)keep alive for yourselves. 19 (EK)Encamp outside the camp seven days. Whoever of you has killed any person and (EL)whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. 20 You shall purify every garment, every article of skin, all work of goats' hair, and every article of wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men in the army who had gone to battle: “This is the statute of the law that the Lord has commanded Moses: 22 only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean. Nevertheless, it shall also be purified (EM)with the water for impurity. And whatever cannot stand the fire, you shall pass through the water. 24 You must (EN)wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. And afterward you may come into the camp.”

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Take the count of the plunder that was taken, both of man and of beast, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' houses of the congregation, 27 and (EO)divide the plunder into two parts between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation. 28 And levy for the Lord a tribute from the men of war who went out to battle, (EP)one out of five hundred, of the people and of the oxen and of the donkeys and of the flocks. 29 Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as a contribution to the Lord. 30 And from the people of Israel's half you shall take (EQ)one drawn out of every fifty, of the people, of the oxen, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the cattle, and give them to the Levites (ER)who keep guard over the tabernacle of the Lord.” 31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32 Now the plunder remaining of the spoil that the army took was 675,000 sheep, 33 72,000 cattle, 34 61,000 donkeys, 35 and 32,000 persons in all, women who had not known man by lying with him. 36 And the half, the portion of those who had gone out in the army, numbered 337,500 sheep, 37 and (ES)the Lord's tribute of sheep was 675. 38 The cattle were 36,000, of which the Lord's tribute was 72. 39 The donkeys were 30,500, of which the Lord's tribute was 61. 40 The persons were 16,000, of which the Lord's tribute was 32 persons. 41 And Moses gave the tribute, which was the contribution for the Lord, to Eleazar the priest, (ET)as the Lord commanded Moses.

42 From the people of Israel's half, which Moses separated from that of the men who had served in the army— 43 now the congregation's half was 337,500 sheep, 44 36,000 cattle, 45 and 30,500 donkeys, 46 and 16,000 persons— 47 (EU)from the people of Israel's half Moses took one of every 50, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites who kept guard over the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

48 Then (EV)the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, came near to Moses 49 and said to Moses, “Your servants have counted the men of war who are under our command, and there is not a man missing from us. 50 And we have brought the Lord's offering, what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and beads, (EW)to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.” 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them the gold, all crafted articles. 52 And all the gold of the contribution that they presented to the Lord, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels.[i] 53 (EX)(The men in the army had each taken plunder for himself.) 54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, (EY)as a memorial for the people of Israel before the Lord.

Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

32 Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of (EZ)Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock. So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, (FA)“Ataroth, (FB)Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, (FC)Nebo, and Beon, the land (FD)that the Lord struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”

But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here? Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the Lord has given them? Your fathers did this, (FE)when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the Lord had given them. 10 (FF)And the Lord's anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, 11 ‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, (FG)from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give (FH)to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me, 12 none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (FI)Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for (FJ)they have wholly followed the Lord.’ 13 And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them (FK)wander in the wilderness forty years, until (FL)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone. 14 And behold, you have risen in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the Lord against Israel! 15 For if you (FM)turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”

16 Then they came near to him and said, (FN)“We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, 17 but (FO)we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 (FP)We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, (FQ)because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.” 20 So (FR)Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the Lord for the war, 21 and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the Lord, until he has (FS)driven out his enemies from before him

Vows

30 [t]Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel:(IE) “This is what the Lord commands: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.(IF)

“When a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the Lord or obligates herself by a pledge and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all her vows and every pledge by which she obligated herself will stand.(IG) But if her father forbids her(IH) when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father has forbidden her.

“If she marries after she makes a vow(II) or after her lips utter a rash promise by which she obligates herself and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her, then her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. But if her husband(IJ) forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her or the rash promise by which she obligates herself, and the Lord will release her.(IK)

“Any vow or obligation taken by a widow or divorced woman will be binding on her.

10 “If a woman living with her husband makes a vow or obligates herself by a pledge under oath 11 and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her and does not forbid her, then all her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. 12 But if her husband nullifies them when he hears about them, then none of the vows or pledges that came from her lips will stand.(IL) Her husband has nullified them, and the Lord will release her. 13 Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself.[u] 14 But if her husband says nothing to her about it from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or the pledges binding on her. He confirms them by saying nothing to her when he hears about them. 15 If, however, he nullifies them(IM) some time after he hears about them, then he must bear the consequences of her wrongdoing.”

16 These are the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and his young daughter still living at home.

Vengeance on the Midianites

31 The Lord said to Moses, “Take vengeance on the Midianites(IN) for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.(IO)

So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance(IP) on them. Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” So twelve thousand men armed for battle,(IQ) a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. Moses sent them into battle,(IR) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas(IS) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary(IT) and the trumpets(IU) for signaling.

They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses,(IV) and killed every man.(IW) Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(IX)—the five kings of Midian.(IY) They also killed Balaam son of Beor(IZ) with the sword.(JA) The Israelites captured the Midianite women(JB) and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.(JC) 10 They burned(JD) all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.(JE) 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,(JF) 12 and brought the captives, spoils(JG) and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly(JH) at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.(JI)

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army(JJ)—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice(JK) and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident,(JL) so that a plague(JM) struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,(JN) 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

19 “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed(JO) must stay outside the camp seven days.(JP) On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves(JQ) and your captives. 20 Purify every garment(JR) as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.(JS)

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle,(JT) “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron,(JU) tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire,(JV) and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing.(JW) And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean.(JX) Then you may come into the camp.(JY)

Dividing the Spoils

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads(JZ) of the community are to count all the people(KA) and animals that were captured.(KB) 27 Divide(KC) the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord(KD) one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep. 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part. 30 From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.(KE) 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32 The plunder remaining from the spoils(KF) that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, 33 72,000 cattle, 34 61,000 donkeys 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.

36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:

337,500 sheep, 37 of which the tribute for the Lord(KG) was 675;

38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;

39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;

40 16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.

41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part,(KH) as the Lord commanded Moses.(KI)

42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men— 43 the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep, 44 36,000 cattle, 45 30,500 donkeys 46 and 16,000 people. 47 From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.

48 Then the officers(KJ) who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses 49 and said to him, “Your servants have counted(KK) the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.(KL) 50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves(KM) before the Lord.”

51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles. 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.[v] 53 Each soldier had taken plunder(KN) for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting(KO) as a memorial(KP) for the Israelites before the Lord.

The Transjordan Tribes

32 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks,(KQ) saw that the lands of Jazer(KR) and Gilead(KS) were suitable for livestock.(KT) So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community,(KU) and said, “Ataroth,(KV) Dibon,(KW) Jazer,(KX) Nimrah,(KY) Heshbon,(KZ) Elealeh,(LA) Sebam,(LB) Nebo(LC) and Beon(LD) the land the Lord subdued(LE) before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock,(LF) and your servants have livestock. If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.(LG)

Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here? Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the Lord has given them?(LH) This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.(LI) After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol(LJ) and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them. 10 The Lord’s anger was aroused(LK) that day and he swore this oath:(LL) 11 ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more(LM) when they came up out of Egypt(LN) will see the land I promised on oath(LO) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(LP) 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’(LQ) 13 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel(LR) and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.(LS)

14 “And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.(LT) 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.(LU)

16 Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens(LV) here for our livestock(LW) and cities for our women and children. 17 But we will arm ourselves for battle[w] and go ahead of the Israelites(LX) until we have brought them to their place.(LY) Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance.(LZ) 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance(MA) has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”(MB)

20 Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle(MC) 21 and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enemies out before him(MD)
