10 Adonai said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s staff back in front of the Testimony to keep as a sign to the sons of rebellion, so that it may put an end to their grumblings against Me, and so they will not die.” 11 Moses did just as Adonai had commanded him.

12 But Bnei-Yisrael said to Moses saying, “Look! We will die! We are all lost! We are lost! 13 Anyone approaching the Tabernacle of Adonai will die! Must all of us die?”

Kohen Duties and Portions

18 Adonai said to Aaron, “You, your sons, and the house of your father with you will bear the guilt for the Sanctuary, and you and your sons will bear the guilt for your priesthood. Bring with you your brothers, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, so that they may join you and assist you, both you and your sons with you, before the Tent of the Testimony. They are to perform their duties for you and for all matters related to the Tent. They must not approach the implements of the Sanctuary or the altar—otherwise, both you and they will die. They are to team with you and attend to the Tent of Meeting, for all the service of the Tent. But no unauthorized person may intrude upon you. So you are to attend to the Sanctuary and the care of the altar, so no further wrath will fall on Bnei-Yisrael.

“See, I have personally taken your kinsmen, the Levites, from among Bnei-Yisrael as a gift for you and your sons with you, dedicated to Adonai to serve in the work of the Tent of Meeting. But you and your sons with you are to maintain your priesthood for everything pertaining to the altar and inside the parokhet. I am giving you the ministry of the priesthood as a gift. Anyone unauthorized who approaches will die.”

Adonai then said to Aaron, “See, I have given you charge over all My offerings. All the sacred things from Bnei-Yisrael I have given to you as set aside for you and your sons as a permanent share. You are to have the part of the most holy things that is kept from the fire. Whether grain, sin or guilt offerings that they bring to Me as most holy—they are for you and your sons. 10 You are to eat it as most holy. Every male may eat it—it is set apart for you. 11 This also is yours: the gift of the wave offerings of Bnei-Yisrael. I have given all the wave offerings as a permanent share to you, your sons and your daughters. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it. 12 All the finest olive oil, the finest new wine and grain they give to Adonai from their firstfruits, I have given them to you. 13 All the firstfruits of the land that they bring to Adonai will be for yours. Anyone who is clean in your house may eat it.

14 Every devoted thing in Israel is yours. 15 The first offspring of the womb from all flesh, whether human or animal, offered to Adonai, is yours. However, you are to redeem the firstborn of man and the firstborn of unclean animals. 16 When they are a month old, you are to redeem them at the redemption price of five shekels of silver by the Sanctuary shekel, or 20 gerahs. 17 But the firstborn of the ox, sheep or goat you are not to redeem. They are holy. You are to sprinkle their blood on the altar, and their fat you are to burn as a fire offering, a pleasing aroma to Adonai. 18 Their meat—the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh—is yours. 19 Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings which Bnei-Yisrael present to Adonai, I have given to you, your sons and your daughters with you as a permanent share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before Adonai for you and your offspring.”

20 Adonai said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land nor share among them. I am your portion and your share among Bnei-Yisrael.

10 The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff(A) in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious.(B) This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” 11 Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.

12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!(C) 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die.(D) Are we all going to die?”

Duties of Priests and Levites

18 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary,(E) and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister(F) before the tent of the covenant law. They are to be responsible to you(G) and are to perform all the duties of the tent,(H) but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die.(I) They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting—all the work at the tent—and no one else may come near where you are.(J)

“You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar,(K) so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again. I myself have selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites as a gift to you,(L) dedicated to the Lord to do the work at the tent of meeting.(M) But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain.(N) I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift.(O) Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.(P)

Offerings for Priests and Levites

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion,(Q) your perpetual share.(R) You are to have the part of the most holy offerings(S) that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain(T) or sin[a](U) or guilt offerings,(V) that part belongs to you and your sons. 10 Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it.(W) You must regard it as holy.(X)

11 “This also is yours: whatever is set aside from the gifts of all the wave offerings(Y) of the Israelites. I give this to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share.(Z) Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean(AA) may eat it.

12 “I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain(AB) they give the Lord(AC) as the firstfruits of their harvest.(AD) 13 All the land’s firstfruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours.(AE) Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.(AF)

14 “Everything in Israel that is devoted[b] to the Lord(AG) is yours. 15 The first offspring of every womb, both human and animal, that is offered to the Lord is yours.(AH) But you must redeem(AI) every firstborn(AJ) son and every firstborn male of unclean animals.(AK) 16 When they are a month old,(AL) you must redeem them at the redemption price set at five shekels[c](AM) of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel,(AN) which weighs twenty gerahs.(AO)

17 “But you must not redeem the firstborn of a cow, a sheep or a goat; they are holy.(AP) Splash their blood(AQ) against the altar and burn their fat(AR) as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(AS) 18 Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering(AT) and the right thigh are yours.(AU) 19 Whatever is set aside from the holy(AV) offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt(AW) before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”

20 The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them;(AX) I am your share and your inheritance(AY) among the Israelites.
