Numbers 25:7-13

New International Version

⁷When Phinehas^(A) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear^(B) in his hand ⁸and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;^(C) ⁹but those who died in the plague^(D) numbered 24,000.^(E)

¹⁰The Lord said to Moses, ¹¹“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.^(F) Since he was as zealous for my honor^(G) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. ¹²Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace^(H) with him. ¹³He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,^(I) because he was zealous^(J) for the honor^(K) of his God and made atonement^(L) for the Israelites.”^(M)

⁷Now ^(A)when Phinehas ^(B)the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; ⁸and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So ^(C)the plague was ^(D)stopped among the children of Israel. ⁹And ^(E)those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

¹⁰Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ¹¹^(F)“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in ^(G)My zeal. ¹²Therefore say, ^(H)‘Behold, I give to him My ^(I)covenant of peace; ¹³and it shall be to him and ^(J)his descendants after him a covenant of ^(K)an everlasting priesthood, because he was ^(L)zealous for his God, and ^(M)made ^[a]atonement for the children of Israel.’ ”
