Arrangement of the Lamps(A)
8 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to Aaron, and say to him, ‘When you (B)arrange the lamps, the seven (C)lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand.’ ” 3 And Aaron did so; he arranged the lamps to face toward the front of the lampstand, as the Lord commanded Moses. 4 (D)Now this workmanship of the lampstand was hammered gold; from its shaft to its flowers it was (E)hammered work. (F)According to the pattern which the Lord had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.
Cleansing and Dedication of the Levites
5 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 6 “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel and cleanse them ceremonially. 7 Thus you shall do to them to cleanse them: Sprinkle (G)water of purification on them, and (H)let[a] them shave all their body, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean. 8 Then let them take a young bull with (I)its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you shall take another young bull as a sin offering. 9 (J)And you shall bring the Levites before the tabernacle of meeting, (K)and you shall gather together the whole congregation of the children of Israel. 10 So you shall bring the Levites before the Lord, and the children of Israel (L)shall lay their hands on the Levites; 11 and Aaron shall [b]offer the Levites before the Lord like a (M)wave offering from the children of Israel, that they may perform the work of the Lord. 12 (N)Then the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the young bulls, and you shall offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the Lord, to make atonement for the Levites.
13 “And you shall stand the Levites before Aaron and his sons, and then offer them like a wave offering to the Lord. 14 Thus you shall (O)separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be (P)Mine. 15 After that the Levites shall go in to service the tabernacle of meeting. So you shall cleanse them and (Q)offer them like a wave offering. 16 For they are (R)wholly given to Me from among the children of Israel; I have taken them for Myself (S)instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel. 17 (T)For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are Mine, both man and beast; on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I [c]sanctified them to Myself. 18 I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn of the children of Israel. 19 And (U)I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the work for the children of Israel in the tabernacle of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel, (V)that there be no plague among the children of Israel when the children of Israel come near the sanctuary.”
20 Thus Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel did to the Levites; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the children of Israel did to them. 21 (W)And the Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes; then Aaron presented them like a wave offering before the Lord, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. 22 (X)After that the Levites went in to do their work in the tabernacle of meeting before Aaron and his sons; (Y)as the Lord commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.
23 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “This is what pertains to the Levites: (Z)From twenty-five years old and above one may enter to perform service in the work of the tabernacle of meeting; 25 and at the age of fifty years they must cease performing this work, and shall work no more. 26 They may minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of meeting, (AA)to attend to needs, but they themselves shall do no work. Thus you shall do to the Levites regarding their duties.”
The Second Passover(AB)
9 Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: 2 “Let the children of Israel keep (AC)the Passover at its appointed (AD)time. 3 On the fourteenth day of this month, [d]at twilight, you shall [e]keep it at its appointed time. According to all its [f]rites and ceremonies you shall keep it.” 4 So Moses told the children of Israel that they should keep the Passover. 5 And (AE)they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month, at twilight, in the Wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did.
6 Now there were certain men who were (AF)defiled by a human corpse, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day; (AG)and they came before Moses and Aaron that day. 7 And those men said to him, “We became defiled by a human corpse. Why are we kept from presenting the offering of the Lord at its appointed time among the children of Israel?”
8 And Moses said to them, “Stand still, that (AH)I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you.”
9 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If anyone of you or your [g]posterity is unclean because of a corpse, or is far away on a journey, he may still keep the Lord’s Passover. 11 On (AI)the fourteenth day of the second month, at twilight, they may keep it. They shall (AJ)eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 (AK)They shall leave none of it until morning, (AL)nor break one of its bones. (AM)According to all the [h]ordinances of the Passover they shall keep it. 13 But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, and ceases to keep the Passover, that same person (AN)shall be cut off from among his people, because he (AO)did not bring the offering of the Lord at its appointed time; that man shall (AP)bear his sin.
14 ‘And if a stranger [i]dwells among you, and would keep the Lord’s Passover, he must do so according to the rite of the Passover and according to its ceremony; (AQ)you shall have one [j]ordinance, both for the stranger and the native of the land.’ ”
The Cloud and the Fire(AR)
15 Now (AS)on the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud (AT)covered the tabernacle, the tent of the Testimony; (AU)from evening until morning it was above the tabernacle like the appearance of fire. 16 So it was always: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. 17 Whenever the cloud (AV)was [k]taken up from above the tabernacle, after that the children of Israel would journey; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the children of Israel would pitch their tents. 18 At the [l]command of the Lord the children of Israel would journey, and at the command of the Lord they would camp; (AW)as long as the cloud stayed above the tabernacle they remained encamped. 19 Even when the cloud continued long, many days above the tabernacle, the children of Israel (AX)kept the charge of the Lord and did not journey. 20 So it was, when the cloud was above the tabernacle a few days: according to the command of the Lord they would remain encamped, and according to the command of the Lord they would journey. 21 So it was, when the cloud remained only from evening until morning: when the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they would journey; whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud was taken up, they would journey. 22 Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud remained above the tabernacle, the children of Israel (AY)would remain encamped and not journey; but when it was taken up, they would journey. 23 At the command of the Lord they remained encamped, and at the command of the Lord they journeyed; they (AZ)kept the charge of the Lord, at the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
Two Silver Trumpets
10 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for (BA)calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps. 3 When (BB)they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 4 But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the (BC)heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. 5 When you sound the (BD)advance, (BE)the camps that lie on the east side shall then begin their journey. 6 When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie (BF)on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys. 7 And when the assembly is to be gathered together, (BG)you shall blow, but not (BH)sound the advance. 8 (BI)The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an [m]ordinance forever throughout your generations.
9 (BJ)“When you go to war in your land against the enemy who (BK)oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be (BL)remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. 10 Also (BM)in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be (BN)a memorial for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”
Departure from Sinai
11 Now it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud (BO)was taken up from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. 12 And the children of Israel set out from the (BP)Wilderness of Sinai on (BQ)their journeys; then the cloud settled down in the (BR)Wilderness of Paran. 13 So they started out for the first time (BS)according to the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
14 The [n]standard of the camp of the children of Judah (BT)set out first according to their armies; over their army was (BU)Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 15 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar. 16 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.
17 Then (BV)the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, (BW)carrying the tabernacle.
18 And (BX)the standard of the camp of Reuben set out according to their armies; over their army was Elizur the son of Shedeur. 19 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 20 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
21 Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the (BY)holy things. (The tabernacle would be [o]prepared for their arrival.)
22 And (BZ)the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set out according to their armies; over their army was Elishama the son of Ammihud. 23 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 24 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.
25 Then (CA)the standard of the camp of the children of Dan (the rear guard of all the camps) set out according to their armies; over their army was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran. 27 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.
28 (CB)Thus was the order of march of the children of Israel, according to their armies, when they began their journey.
29 Now Moses said to (CC)Hobab the son of (CD)Reuel[p] the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, (CE)‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and (CF)we will treat you well; for (CG)the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”
30 And he said to him, “I will not go, but I will depart to my own land and to my relatives.”
31 So Moses said, “Please do not leave, inasmuch as you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you can [q]be our (CH)eyes. 32 And it shall be, if you go with us—indeed it shall be—that (CI)whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same we will do to you.”
33 So they departed from (CJ)the mountain of the Lord on a journey of three days; and the ark of the covenant of the Lord (CK)went before them for the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them. 34 And (CL)the cloud of the Lord was above them by day when they went out from the camp.
35 So it was, whenever the ark set out, that Moses said:
(CM)“Rise up, O Lord!
Let Your enemies be scattered,
And let those who hate You flee before You.”
36 And when it rested, he said:
“Return, O Lord,
To the many thousands of Israel.”
The People Complain
11 Now (CN)when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; (CO)for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the (CP)fire of the Lord burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp. 2 Then the people (CQ)cried out to Moses, and when Moses (CR)prayed to the Lord, the fire was [r]quenched. 3 So he called the name of the place [s]Taberah, because the fire of the Lord had burned among them.
4 Now the (CS)mixed multitude who were among them [t]yielded to (CT)intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: (CU)“Who will give us meat to eat? 5 (CV)We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now (CW)our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!”
7 Now (CX)the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium. 8 The people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, cooked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and (CY)its taste was like the taste of pastry prepared with oil. 9 And (CZ)when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.
10 Then Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and (DA)the anger of the Lord was greatly aroused; Moses also was displeased. 11 (DB)So Moses said to the Lord, “Why have You afflicted Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the [u]burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I beget them, that You should say to me, (DC)‘Carry them in your bosom, as a (DD)guardian carries a nursing child,’ to the land which You (DE)swore[v] to their fathers? 13 (DF)Where am I to get meat to give to all these people? For they weep all over me, saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’ 14 (DG)I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and (DH)do not let me see my wretchedness!”
The Seventy Elders
16 So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me (DI)seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and (DJ)officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 Then I will come down and talk with you there. (DK)I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18 Then you shall say to the people, [w]‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept (DL)in the hearing of the Lord, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19 You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 (DM)but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have (DN)despised the Lord who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, (DO)“Why did we ever come up out of Egypt?” ’ ”
21 And Moses said, (DP)“The people whom I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month.’ 22 (DQ)Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to provide enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to provide enough for them?”
23 And the Lord said to Moses, (DR)“Has[x] the Lord’s arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether (DS)what I say will happen to you or not.”
24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord, and he (DT)gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, (DU)when the Spirit rested upon them, that (DV)they prophesied, [y]although they never did so again.
26 But two men had remained in the camp: the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were among those listed, but who (DW)had not gone out to the tabernacle; yet they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, “Moses my lord, (DX)forbid them!”
29 Then Moses said to him, “Are you [z]zealous for my sake? (DY)Oh, that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!” 30 And Moses returned to the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
The Lord Sends Quail
31 Now a (DZ)wind went out from the Lord, and it brought quail from the sea and left them fluttering near the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and about a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the ground. 32 And the people stayed up all that day, all night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten (EA)homers); and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 But while the (EB)meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was aroused against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague. 34 So he called the name of that place [aa]Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had yielded to craving.
35 (EC)From Kibroth Hattaavah the people moved to Hazeroth, and camped at Hazeroth.
Dissension of Aaron and Miriam
12 Then (ED)Miriam and Aaron [ab]spoke (EE)against Moses because of the [ac]Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for (EF)he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2 So they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through (EG)Moses? (EH)Has He not spoken through us also?” And the Lord (EI)heard it. 3 (Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.)
4 (EJ)Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tabernacle of meeting!” So the three came out. 5 (EK)Then the Lord came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward. 6 Then He said,
“Hear now My words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, the Lord, make Myself known to him (EL)in a vision;
I speak to him (EM)in a dream.
7 Not so with (EN)My servant Moses;
(EO)He is faithful in all (EP)My house.
8 I speak with him (EQ)face to face,
Even (ER)plainly,[ad] and not in [ae]dark sayings;
And he sees (ES)the form of the Lord.
Why then (ET)were you not afraid
To speak against My servant Moses?”
9 So the anger of the Lord was aroused against them, and He departed. 10 And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, (EU)suddenly Miriam became (EV)leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper. 11 So Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord! Please (EW)do not lay [af]this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. 12 Please (EX)do not let her be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb!”
13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “Please (EY)heal her, O God, I pray!”
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but (EZ)spit in her face, would she not be shamed seven days? Let her be (FA)shut[ag] out of the camp seven days, and afterward she may be received again.” 15 (FB)So Miriam was shut out of the camp seven days, and the people did not journey till Miriam was brought in again. 16 And afterward the people moved from (FC)Hazeroth and camped in the Wilderness of Paran.

Setting Up the Lamps
8 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.(A)’”
3 Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the Lord commanded Moses. 4 This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold(B)—from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern(C) the Lord had shown Moses.
The Setting Apart of the Levites
5 The Lord said to Moses: 6 “Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean.(D) 7 To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing(E) on them; then have them shave their whole bodies(F) and wash their clothes.(G) And so they will purify themselves.(H) 8 Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil;(I) then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.[a](J) 9 Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting(K) and assemble the whole Israelite community.(L) 10 You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them.(M) 11 Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering(N) from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.
12 “Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls,(O) using one for a sin offering(P) to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering,(Q) to make atonement(R) for the Levites. 13 Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering(S) to the Lord. 14 In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.(T)
15 “After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering,(U) they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting.(V) 16 They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn,(W) the first male offspring(X) from every Israelite woman. 17 Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal,(Y) is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself.(Z) 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel.(AA) 19 From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons(AB) to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites(AC) and to make atonement for them(AD) so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.”
20 Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes.(AE) Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement(AF) for them to purify them.(AG) 22 After that, the Levites came to do their work(AH) at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.
23 The Lord said to Moses, 24 “This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more(AI) shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting,(AJ) 25 but at the age of fifty,(AK) they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. 26 They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work.(AL) This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.”
The Passover
9 The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month(AM) of the second year after they came out of Egypt.(AN) He said, 2 “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover(AO) at the appointed time.(AP) 3 Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month,(AQ) in accordance with all its rules and regulations.(AR)”
4 So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover,(AS) 5 and they did so in the Desert of Sinai(AT) at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month.(AU) The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.(AV)
6 But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean(AW) on account of a dead body.(AX) So they came to Moses and Aaron(AY) that same day 7 and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lord’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?(AZ)”
8 Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.”(BA)
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body(BB) or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate(BC) the Lord’s Passover, 11 but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month(BD) at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.(BE) 12 They must not leave any of it till morning(BF) or break any of its bones.(BG) When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.(BH) 13 But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people(BI) for not presenting the Lord’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.
14 “‘A foreigner(BJ) residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”
The Cloud Above the Tabernacle
15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law,(BK) was set up,(BL) the cloud(BM) covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire.(BN) 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire.(BO) 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out;(BP) wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped.(BQ) 18 At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained(BR) in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s order(BS) and did not set out.(BT) 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.
The Silver Trumpets
10 The Lord said to Moses: 2 “Make two trumpets(BU) of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community(BV) together and for having the camps set out.(BW) 3 When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 4 If only one is sounded, the leaders(BX)—the heads of the clans of Israel—are to assemble before you. 5 When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out.(BY) 6 At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out.(BZ) The blast will be the signal for setting out. 7 To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets,(CA) but not with the signal for setting out.(CB)
8 “The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.(CC) 9 When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you,(CD) sound a blast on the trumpets.(CE) Then you will be remembered(CF) by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies.(CG) 10 Also at your times of rejoicing—your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts(CH)—you are to sound the trumpets(CI) over your burnt offerings(CJ) and fellowship offerings,(CK) and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.(CL)”
The Israelites Leave Sinai
11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year,(CM) the cloud lifted(CN) from above the tabernacle of the covenant law.(CO) 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.(CP) 13 They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses.(CQ)
14 The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard.(CR) Nahshon son of Amminadab(CS) was in command. 15 Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe(CT) of Issachar,(CU) 16 and Eliab son of Helon(CV) was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.(CW) 17 Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.(CX)
18 The divisions of the camp of Reuben(CY) went next, under their standard.(CZ) Elizur son of Shedeur(DA) was in command. 19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon,(DB) 20 and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad.(DC) 21 Then the Kohathites(DD) set out, carrying the holy things.(DE) The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.(DF)
22 The divisions of the camp of Ephraim(DG) went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud(DH) was in command. 23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh,(DI) 24 and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin.(DJ)
25 Finally, as the rear guard(DK) for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai(DL) was in command. 26 Pagiel son of Okran was over the division of the tribe of Asher,(DM) 27 and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali.(DN) 28 This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.
29 Now Moses said to Hobab(DO) son of Reuel(DP) the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,(DQ) “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’(DR) Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”
30 He answered, “No, I will not go;(DS) I am going back to my own land and my own people.(DT)”
31 But Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.(DU) 32 If you come with us, we will share with you(DV) whatever good things the Lord gives us.(DW)”
33 So they set out(DX) from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord(DY) went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.(DZ) 34 The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.(EA)
35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses said,
36 Whenever it came to rest, he said,
Fire From the Lord
11 Now the people complained(EH) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,(EI) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.(EJ) Then fire from the Lord burned among them(EK) and consumed(EL) some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed(EM) to the Lord(EN) and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah,[b](EO) because fire from the Lord had burned among them.(EP)
Quail From the Lord
4 The rabble with them began to crave other food,(EQ) and again the Israelites started wailing(ER) and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.(ES) 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!(ET)”
7 The manna was like coriander seed(EU) and looked like resin.(EV) 8 The people went around gathering it,(EW) and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. 9 When the dew(EX) settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.
10 Moses heard the people of every family wailing(EY) at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble(EZ) on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?(FA) 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant,(FB) to the land you promised on oath(FC) to their ancestors?(FD) 13 Where can I get meat for all these people?(FE) They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(FF) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(FG)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(FH) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(FI) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(FJ) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(FK) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(FL) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(FM)
18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(FN) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(FO) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(FP) Now the Lord will give you meat,(FQ) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(FR)—because you have rejected the Lord,(FS) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(FT)
21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(FU) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(FV)
23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(FW) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(FX)”
24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(FY) and spoke with him,(FZ) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(GA) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(GB) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(GC)—but did not do so again.
26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them,(GD) and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 Joshua son of Nun,(GE) who had been Moses’ aide(GF) since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”(GG)
29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets(GH) and that the Lord would put his Spirit(GI) on them!”(GJ) 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
31 Now a wind went out from the Lord and drove quail(GK) in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits[c] deep all around the camp, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers.[d] Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth(GL) and before it could be consumed, the anger(GM) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.(GN) 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,[e](GO) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.
35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth(GP) and stayed there.
Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses
12 Miriam(GQ) and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife,(GR) for he had married a Cushite. 2 “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?”(GS) And the Lord heard this.(GT)
3 (Now Moses was a very humble man,(GU) more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)
4 At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. 5 Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud;(GV) he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, 6 he said, “Listen to my words:
“When there is a prophet among you,
I, the Lord, reveal(GW) myself to them in visions,(GX)
I speak to them in dreams.(GY)
7 But this is not true of my servant Moses;(GZ)
he is faithful in all my house.(HA)
8 With him I speak face to face,
clearly and not in riddles;(HB)
he sees the form of the Lord.(HC)
Why then were you not afraid
to speak against my servant Moses?”(HD)
9 The anger of the Lord burned against them,(HE) and he left them.(HF)
10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent,(HG) Miriam’s skin was leprous[f]—it became as white as snow.(HH) Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease,(HI) 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed.(HJ) 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.”
13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!(HK)”
14 The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face,(HL) would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp(HM) for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” 15 So Miriam was confined outside the camp(HN) for seven days,(HO) and the people did not move on till she was brought back.
16 After that, the people left Hazeroth(HP) and encamped in the Desert of Paran.(HQ)

7 Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(P) that comes up from the Abyss(Q) will attack them,(R) and overpower and kill them. 8 Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(S)—which is figuratively called Sodom(T) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(U) 9 For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(V) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(W) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(X) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(Y) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.
11 But after the three and a half days(Z) the breath[b] of life from God entered them,(AA) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(AB) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(AC) while their enemies looked on.
13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(AD) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(AE) to the God of heaven.(AF)
14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(AG)
The Seventh Trumpet
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(AH) and there were loud voices(AI) in heaven, which said:
“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(AJ)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(AK)
16 And the twenty-four elders,(AL) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(AM) and worshiped God, 17 saying:
“We give thanks(AN) to you, Lord God Almighty,(AO)
the One who is and who was,(AP)
because you have taken your great power
and have begun to reign.(AQ)
18 The nations were angry,(AR)
and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(AS)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(AT)
and your people who revere your name,
both great and small(AU)—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”
19 Then God’s temple(AV) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(AW) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(AX) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(AY)
