A Song of Praise

108 My heart will not be moved, O God. I will sing. Yes, I will sing praises with my soul. Wake up, different kinds of harps. I will wake up the new day. I will give thanks to You among the people, O Lord. I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your loving-kindness is great above the heavens. And Your truth can touch the sky. Be lifted up high above the heavens, O God. Let Your shining-greatness be over all the earth. Save us with Your right hand and answer me. Let Your loved ones be set free.

God has said in His holy place: “I will be full of joy. I will divide Shechem and the valley of Succoth. Gilead is Mine. Manasseh is Mine. Ephraim is the covering for My head. Judah is My law giver. Moab is where I wash My hands. I will throw My shoe over Edom. I will call out over Philistia that I have won.”

10 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me into Edom? 11 Have You not turned away from us, O God? And will You not go out with our armies, O God? 12 O give us help against those who hate us. For the help of man is worth nothing. 13 With God’s help we will do great things. And He will break under His feet those who fight against us.

A Man in Trouble

109 I give praise to You, O God. Do not be quiet. For sinners and liars have opened their mouths against me. They have spoken against me with lying tongues. They have gathered around me with words of hate. They fought against me for no reason. I give them my love but they speak against me in return. But I am in prayer. They pay me what is bad for what is good. They give me hate for my love.

Let a sinful man have power over him. Let one who speaks against him stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty. And may his prayer become sin. Let his days be few. Let another person take over his work. Let his children be without a father. And let his wife be without a husband. 10 May his children go around begging. And may they look for food far from their destroyed homes. 11 Let the one to whom he owes money take all that he has. May strangers take away all he has worked for. 12 May no one show him kindness. Let no one pity his children who have no father. 13 Let his children be cut off. Do not let their family name be remembered by the people-to-come.

14 Let the sins of his fathers be remembered by the Lord, and do not let the sins of his mother be forgotten. 15 May these sins always be before the Lord. So He may not let them be remembered on the earth. 16 Because he did not remember to show loving-kindness. Instead he made it hard for the poor and those in need and those with a broken heart. He even put them to death. 17 He loved to curse others, so may it come to him. He did not like to have good come to others, so good was far from him. 18 He dressed himself with cursing as with a coat. They came into his body like water and into his bones like oil. 19 May they be like clothing that covers him and like a belt that he always wears. 20 Let this be what the Lord pays to those who speak against me and wish bad things would happen to me.

21 But You, O God, the Lord, be kind to me because of Your name. Take me out of trouble because Your loving-kindness is good. 22 For I am in trouble and in need. And my heart is hurt within me. 23 I am passing like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust. 24 My knees are weak from going without food. And my body has lost all its fat. 25 Others laugh at me. They look at me and shake their heads.

26 Help me, O Lord my God! Save me by Your loving-kindness. 27 Let them know that this is Your hand and that You, O Lord, have done it. 28 Let them hope that bad things will happen. But You make good things happen. Let them be ashamed when they rise up against me. But let Your servant be full of joy. 29 Let those who speak against me be dressed with shame. Let them cover themselves with shame as with a coat. 30 I will give thanks to the Lord in a loud voice. I will praise Him among many people. 31 For He stands at the right hand of the one in need to save him from those who judge his soul.

The King Rules

110 The Lord says to my Lord, “Sit at My right side, for those who hate You will be a place to rest Your feet.” The Lord will send out Your strength from Zion, saying, “Rule in front of those who hate You.” Your people will be willing to help in the day of Your power. Your young men will be dressed in holy clothes. They will come to You like water on the grass in the early morning.

The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind: “You are a Religious Leader forever, in the same way as Melchizedek.” The Lord is at Your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of His anger. He will say who is guilty or not among the nations. He will fill them with dead bodies. He will crush the leaders of many lands. He will drink from the river on the way. And so He will lift up His head.

The Lord Be Praised

111 Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart where those who are right with God gather together and in the meeting of the people. The works of the Lord are great. All who find joy in them try to understand them. His work is great and powerful. And He is right and good forever. He has made His great works to be remembered. The Lord shows loving-favor and pity. He gives food to those who fear Him. He will remember His agreement forever. He has shown His people the power of His works by giving them the land of other nations.

The works of His hands are faithful and right. All His Laws are true. They stand strong forever and ever. They are done by what is true and right. He has made a way for His people to be free. He has set up His agreement forever. His holy name is to be honored with fear. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. All who obey His Laws have good understanding. His praise lasts forever.

Good Comes to the Person Who Honors the Lord

112 Praise the Lord! How happy is the man who honors the Lord with fear and finds joy in His Law! His children will be powerful in the land. Each family who is right will be happy. Riches and well-being are in his house. And his right-standing with God will last forever. Light rises even in darkness for the one who is right. He is kind and has loving-pity and does what is right. Good will come to the man who is ready to give much, and fair in what he does. He will never be shaken. The man who is right and good will be remembered forever. He will not be afraid of bad news. His heart is strong because he trusts in the Lord. His heart will not be shaken. He will not be afraid and will watch those lose who fight against him. He has given much to the poor. His right-standing with God lasts forever. His horn will be lifted high in honor.

10 The sinful man will see it and be troubled and angry. He will grind his teeth and waste away. The desire of the sinful will come to nothing.

Psalm 108[a](A)(B)

A song. A psalm of David.

My heart, O God, is steadfast;(C)
    I will sing(D) and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre!(E)
    I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love,(F) higher than the heavens;
    your faithfulness(G) reaches to the skies.(H)
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;(I)
    let your glory be over all the earth.(J)

Save us and help us with your right hand,(K)
    that those you love may be delivered.
God has spoken(L) from his sanctuary:(M)
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(N)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(O)
Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet,
    Judah(P) is my scepter.
Moab(Q) is my washbasin,
    on Edom(R) I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia(S) I shout in triumph.”

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?(T)
12 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.(U)
13 With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down(V) our enemies.

Psalm 109

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

My God, whom I praise,(W)
    do not remain silent,(X)
for people who are wicked and deceitful(Y)
    have opened their mouths against me;
    they have spoken against me with lying tongues.(Z)
With words of hatred(AA) they surround me;
    they attack me without cause.(AB)
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
    but I am a man of prayer.(AC)
They repay me evil for good,(AD)
    and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;
    let an accuser(AE) stand at his right hand.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty,(AF)
    and may his prayers condemn(AG) him.
May his days be few;(AH)
    may another take his place(AI) of leadership.
May his children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow.(AJ)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;(AK)
    may they be driven[b] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor(AL) seize all he has;
    may strangers plunder(AM) the fruits of his labor.(AN)
12 May no one extend kindness to him
    or take pity(AO) on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off,(AP)
    their names blotted out(AQ) from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers(AR) be remembered before the Lord;
    may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before(AS) the Lord,
    that he may blot out their name(AT) from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
    but hounded to death the poor
    and the needy(AU) and the brokenhearted.(AV)
17 He loved to pronounce a curse—
    may it come back on him.(AW)
He found no pleasure in blessing—
    may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing(AX) as his garment;
    it entered into his body like water,(AY)
    into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped(AZ) about him,
    like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the Lord’s payment(BA) to my accusers,
    to those who speak evil(BB) of me.

21 But you, Sovereign Lord,
    help me for your name’s sake;(BC)
    out of the goodness of your love,(BD) deliver me.(BE)
22 For I am poor and needy,
    and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I fade away like an evening shadow;(BF)
    I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give(BG) way from fasting;(BH)
    my body is thin and gaunt.(BI)
25 I am an object of scorn(BJ) to my accusers;
    when they see me, they shake their heads.(BK)

26 Help me,(BL) Lord my God;
    save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know(BM) that it is your hand,
    that you, Lord, have done it.
28 While they curse,(BN) may you bless;
    may those who attack me be put to shame,
    but may your servant rejoice.(BO)
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
    and wrapped in shame(BP) as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;
    in the great throng(BQ) of worshipers I will praise him.
31 For he stands at the right hand(BR) of the needy,
    to save their lives from those who would condemn them.
