The Lord, a Refuge and Defense.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

11 In the Lord I (A)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (B)mountain?
For, behold, the wicked (C)bend the bow,
They have [a](D)set their arrow on the string
To (E)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
If the (F)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”

The Lord is in His (G)holy temple; the [b]Lords (H)throne is in heaven;
His (I)eyes see, His eyelids test the sons of mankind.
The Lord (J)tests the righteous and (K)the wicked,
And His soul hates one who loves violence.
He will (L)rain [c]coals of fire upon the wicked,
(M)And brimstone and (N)burning wind will be the portion of (O)their cup.
For the Lord is (P)righteous, (Q)He loves [d]righteousness;
The upright will (R)see His face.

God, a Helper against the Treacherous.

For the music director; [e]upon an eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm of David.

12 Help, Lord, for (S)the godly person has come to an end,
For the faithful have disappeared from the sons of mankind.
They (T)speak [f]lies to one another;
They speak with [g](U)flattering lips and a double heart.
May the Lord cut off all [h]flattering lips,
The tongue that (V)speaks great things;
Who (W)have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are [i]our own; who is lord over us?”
“Because of the (X)devastation of the poor, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now (Y)I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will (Z)put him in the safety for which he longs.”

The (AA)words of the Lord are pure words;
Like silver (AB)refined in a furnace on the ground, filtered seven times.
You, Lord, will keep them;
You will (AC)protect him from this generation forever.
The (AD)wicked strut about on every side
When [j](AE)vileness is exalted among the sons of mankind.

Prayer for Help in Trouble.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

13 How long, Lord? Will You (AF)forget me forever?
How long (AG)will You hide Your face from me?
How long am I to (AH)feel anxious in my soul,
With (AI)grief in my heart all the day?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

(AJ)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
(AK)Enlighten my eyes, or I will (AL)sleep the sleep of death,
And my enemy will (AM)say, “I have overcome him,”
And (AN)my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.

But I have (AO)trusted in Your faithfulness;
My heart shall (AP)rejoice in Your salvation.
I will (AQ)sing to the Lord,
Because He has (AR)looked after me.

Foolishness and Wickedness of People.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

14 The fool has (AS)said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they have committed detestable acts;
There is (AT)no one who does good.
The Lord has (AU)looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind
To see if there are any who [k](AV)understand,
Who (AW)seek God.
They have all (AX)turned aside, together they are corrupt;
There is (AY)no one who does good, not even one.

Do all the workers of injustice (AZ)not know,
Who (BA)devour my people as they eat bread,
And (BB)do not call upon the Lord?
There they are in great dread,
For God is with a (BC)righteous generation.
You would put to shame the plan of the poor,
But the Lord is his (BD)refuge.

Oh, that (BE)the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!
When the Lord (BF)restores the fortunes of His people,
Jacob will rejoice, Israel will be glad.

Description of a Citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

15 Lord, who may reside (BG)in Your tent?
Who may settle on Your (BH)holy hill?
One who (BI)walks with integrity, practices righteousness,
And (BJ)speaks truth in his heart.
He (BK)does not slander [l]with his tongue,
Nor (BL)do evil to his neighbor,
Nor (BM)bring shame on his friend;
A despicable person is despised in his eyes,
But he (BN)honors those who fear the Lord;
He (BO)takes an oath to his own detriment, and does not change;
He (BP)does not [m]lend his money [n]at interest,
Nor (BQ)does he take a bribe against the innocent.
(BR)One who does these things will never be shaken.

The Lord, the Psalmist’s Portion in Life and Salvation in Death.

A [o]Mikhtam of David.

16 (BS)Protect me, God, for (BT)I take refuge in You.
[p]I said to the Lord, “You are [q]my Lord;
I (BU)have nothing good besides You.”
As for the [r](BV)saints who are on the earth,
[s]They are the majestic ones; (BW)all my delight is in them.
[t]The (BX)pains of those who have acquired another god will be multiplied;
I will not pour out their drink offerings of (BY)blood,
Nor will I (BZ)take their names upon my lips.

The Lord is the (CA)portion of my inheritance and my (CB)cup;
You support my (CC)lot.
The measuring (CD)lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my inheritance is (CE)beautiful to me.

I will bless the Lord who has (CF)advised me;
Indeed, my [u](CG)mind instructs me in the night.
(CH)I have (CI)set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is (CJ)at my right hand, (CK)I will not be shaken.
Therefore (CL)my heart is glad and (CM)my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will (CN)dwell securely.
10 For You (CO)will not abandon my soul to [v]Sheol;
You will not [w](CP)allow Your [x]Holy One to [y]undergo decay.
11 You will make known to me (CQ)the way of life;
In (CR)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (CS)pleasures forever.

Psalm 11

For the director of music. Of David.

In the Lord I take refuge.(A)
    How then can you say to me:
    “Flee(B) like a bird to your mountain.(C)
For look, the wicked bend their bows;(D)
    they set their arrows(E) against the strings
to shoot from the shadows(F)
    at the upright in heart.(G)
When the foundations(H) are being destroyed,
    what can the righteous do?”

The Lord is in his holy temple;(I)
    the Lord is on his heavenly throne.(J)
He observes everyone on earth;(K)
    his eyes examine(L) them.
The Lord examines the righteous,(M)
    but the wicked, those who love violence,
    he hates with a passion.(N)
On the wicked he will rain
    fiery coals and burning sulfur;(O)
    a scorching wind(P) will be their lot.

For the Lord is righteous,(Q)
    he loves justice;(R)
    the upright(S) will see his face.(T)

Psalm 12[a]

For the director of music. According to sheminith.[b] A psalm of David.

Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;(U)
    those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
Everyone lies(V) to their neighbor;
    they flatter with their lips
    but harbor deception in their hearts.(W)

May the Lord silence all flattering lips(X)
    and every boastful tongue—(Y)
those who say,
    “By our tongues we will prevail;(Z)
    our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”

“Because the poor are plundered(AA) and the needy groan,(AB)
    I will now arise,(AC)” says the Lord.
    “I will protect them(AD) from those who malign them.”
And the words of the Lord are flawless,(AE)
    like silver purified(AF) in a crucible,(AG)
    like gold[c] refined seven times.

You, Lord, will keep the needy safe(AH)
    and will protect us forever from the wicked,(AI)
who freely strut(AJ) about
    when what is vile is honored by the human race.

Psalm 13[d]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

How long,(AK) Lord? Will you forget me(AL) forever?
    How long will you hide your face(AM) from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts(AN)
    and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
    How long will my enemy triumph over me?(AO)

Look on me(AP) and answer,(AQ) Lord my God.
    Give light to my eyes,(AR) or I will sleep in death,(AS)
and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,(AT)
    and my foes will rejoice when I fall.(AU)

But I trust in your unfailing love;(AV)
    my heart rejoices in your salvation.(AW)
I will sing(AX) the Lord’s praise,
    for he has been good to me.

Psalm 14(AY)

The fool[e] says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”(AZ)
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven(BA)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,(BB)
    any who seek God.(BC)
All have turned away,(BD) all have become corrupt;(BE)
    there is no one who does good,(BF)
    not even one.(BG)

Do all these evildoers know nothing?(BH)

They devour my people(BI) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.(BJ)
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.(BK)

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!(BL)
    When the Lord restores(BM) his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Psalm 15

    and casts no slur on others;
who despises a vile person
    but honors(BT) those who fear the Lord;
who keeps an oath(BU) even when it hurts,
    and does not change their mind;
who lends money to the poor without interest;(BV)
    who does not accept a bribe(BW) against the innocent.

Whoever does these things
    will never be shaken.(BX)

Psalm 16

Keep me safe,(BY) my God,

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;(CA)
    apart from you I have no good thing.”(CB)
I say of the holy people(CC) who are in the land,(CD)
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods(CE) will suffer(CF) more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names(CG) on my lips.

Lord, you alone are my portion(CH) and my cup;(CI)
    you make my lot(CJ) secure.
The boundary lines(CK) have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.(CL)
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;(CM)
    even at night(CN) my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand,(CO) I will not be shaken.(CP)

Therefore my heart is glad(CQ) and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,(CR)
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,(CS)
    nor will you let your faithful[g] one(CT) see decay.(CU)
11 You make known to me the path of life;(CV)
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,(CW)
    with eternal pleasures(CX) at your right hand.(CY)
