71 Psalmus, in Salomonem.

17 Sit nomen ejus benedictum in saecula; ante solem permanet nomen ejus. Et benedicentur in ipso omnes tribus terrae; omnes gentes magnificabunt eum.

18 Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel, qui facit mirabilia solus.

19 Et benedictum nomen majestatis ejus in aeternum, et replebitur majestate ejus omnis terra. Fiat, fiat.

20 Defecerunt laudes David, filii Jesse.

72 Psalmus Asaph.

quia zelavi super iniquos, pacem peccatorum videns.

18 Verumtamen propter dolos posuisti eis; dejecisti eos dum allevarentur.

19 Quomodo facti sunt in desolationem? subito defecerunt: perierunt propter iniquitatem suam.

20 Velut somnium surgentium, Domine, in civitate tua imaginem ipsorum ad nihilum rediges.

21 Quia inflammatum est cor meum, et renes mei commutati sunt;

Redemisti virgam haereditatis tuae, mons Sion, in quo habitasti in eo.

Quasi in silva lignorum securibus

exciderunt januas ejus in idipsum; in securi et ascia dejecerunt eam.

Incenderunt igni sanctuarium tuum; in terra polluerunt tabernaculum nominis tui.

Dixerunt in corde suo cognatio eorum simul: Quiescere faciamus omnes dies festos Dei a terra.

10 Usquequo, Deus, improperabit inimicus? irritat adversarius nomen tuum in finem?

13 Tu confirmasti in virtute tua mare; contribulasti capita draconum in aquis.

14 Tu confregisti capita draconis; dedisti eum escam populis AEthiopum.

Deliver(F) me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,(G)
    from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.(H)

I have become a sign(N) to many;

    declaring your splendor(Q) all day long.

Do not cast(R) me away when I am old;(S)
    do not forsake(T) me when my strength is gone.
10 For my enemies(U) speak against me;
    those who wait to kill(V) me conspire(W) together.
11 They say, “God has forsaken(X) him;
    pursue him and seize him,
    for no one will rescue(Y) him.”
12 Do not be far(Z) from me, my God;
    come quickly, God, to help(AA) me.
13 May my accusers(AB) perish in shame;(AC)
    may those who want to harm me

14 As for me, I will always have hope;(AE)
    I will praise you more and more.

15 My mouth will tell(AF) of your righteous deeds,(AG)

16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts,(AH) Sovereign Lord;
    I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
17 Since my youth, God, you have taught(AI) me,
    and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.(AJ)
18 Even when I am old and gray,(AK)
    do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power(AL) to the next generation,
    your mighty acts to all who are to come.(AM)

19 Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,(AN)
    you who have done great things.(AO)
    Who is like you, God?(AP)
20 Though you have made me see troubles,(AQ)
    many and bitter,
    you will restore(AR) my life again;
from the depths of the earth(AS)
    you will again bring me up.
21 You will increase my honor(AT)
    and comfort(AU) me once more.

22 I will praise you with the harp(AV)
    for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,(AW)
    Holy One of Israel.(AX)
23 My lips will shout for joy(AY)
    when I sing praise to you—
    I whom you have delivered.(AZ)
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
    all day long,(BA)
for those who wanted to harm me(BB)
    have been put to shame and confusion.(BC)

Psalm 72

Of Solomon.

Endow the king with your justice,(BD) O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness.
May he judge your people in righteousness,(BE)
    your afflicted ones with justice.

May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
May he defend the afflicted(BF) among the people
    and save the children of the needy;(BG)
    may he crush the oppressor.(BH)
May he endure[a](BI) as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.(BJ)
May he be like rain(BK) falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
In his days may the righteous flourish(BL)
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River[b](BM) to the ends of the earth.(BN)
May the desert tribes bow before him
    and his enemies lick the dust.
10 May the kings of Tarshish(BO) and of distant shores(BP)
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba(BQ) and Seba
    present him gifts.(BR)
11 May all kings bow down(BS) to him
    and all nations serve(BT) him.

12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity(BU) on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
14 He will rescue(BV) them from oppression and violence,
    for precious(BW) is their blood in his sight.

15 Long may he live!
    May gold from Sheba(BX) be given him.
May people ever pray for him
    and bless him all day long.(BY)
16 May grain(BZ) abound throughout the land;
    on the tops of the hills may it sway.
May the crops(CA) flourish like Lebanon(CB)
    and thrive[c] like the grass of the field.(CC)

BOOK III

Psalms 73–89

Psalm 73

A psalm of Asaph.

Surely God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.(CM)

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(CN)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.(CO)
For I envied(CP) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(CQ)

They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.[e]
They are free(CR) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride(CS) is their necklace;(CT)
    they clothe themselves with violence.(CU)
From their callous hearts(CV) comes iniquity[f];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;(CW)
    with arrogance(CX) they threaten oppression.(CY)
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.[g]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,(CZ) they go on amassing wealth.(DA)

13 Surely in vain(DB) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(DC)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(DD)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(DE) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(DF) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.(DG)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(DH)
    you cast them down to ruin.(DI)
19 How suddenly(DJ) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away(DK) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(DL) when one awakes;(DM)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.(DN)

21 When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
22 I was senseless(DO) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast(DP) before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.(DQ)
24 You guide(DR) me with your counsel,(DS)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(DT)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(DU)
26 My flesh and my heart(DV) may fail,(DW)
    but God is the strength(DX) of my heart
    and my portion(DY) forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;(DZ)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful(EA) to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.(EB)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;(EC)
    I will tell of all your deeds.(ED)

71 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.

Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.

Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth.

By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.

I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.

Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.

Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.

10 For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,

11 Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him.

12 O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.

13 Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.

14 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.

15 My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

17 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

18 Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!

20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

21 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.

22 I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.

23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.

24 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.

72 Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.

He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.

The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.

He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.

He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.

In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

11 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.

12 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.

13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.

14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.

16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

18 Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.

19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

73 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.

They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.

Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.

11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.

14 For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.

16 When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;

17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.

19 How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

20 As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.

22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.

23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.

24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.

28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.
