93 The Lord rules as king! He is clothed with majesty.
The Lord has clothed himself; he has armed himself with power.
The world was set in place; it cannot be moved.

Your throne was set in place a long time ago.
You are eternal.

The ocean rises, O Lord.
The ocean rises with a roar.
The ocean rises with its pounding waves.
The Lord above is mighty—
mightier than the sound of raging water,
mightier than the foaming waves of the sea.

Your written testimonies are completely reliable.
O Lord, holiness is what makes your house beautiful for days without end.

94 O Lord, God of vengeance,
O God of vengeance, appear!
Arise, O Judge of the earth.
Give arrogant people what they deserve.
How long, O Lord, will wicked people triumph?
How long?

They ramble.
They speak arrogantly.
All troublemakers brag about themselves.
They crush your people, O Lord.
They make those who belong to you suffer.
They kill widows and foreigners, and they murder orphans.
They say, “The Lord doesn’t see it.
The God of Jacob doesn’t even pay attention to it.”

Pay attention, you stupid people!
When will you become wise, you fools?
God created ears.
Do you think he can’t hear?
He formed eyes.
Do you think he can’t see?
10 He disciplines nations.
Do you think he can’t punish?
He teaches people.
Do you think he doesn’t know anything?
11 The Lord knows that people’s thoughts are pointless.

12 O Lord, blessed is the person
whom you discipline and instruct from your teachings.
13 You give him peace and quiet from times of trouble
while a pit is dug to trap wicked people.

14 The Lord will never desert his people
or abandon those who belong to him.
15 The decisions of judges will again become fair,
and everyone whose motives are decent will pursue justice.

16 Who will stand up for me against evildoers?
Who will stand by my side against troublemakers?
17 If the Lord had not come to help me,
my soul would have quickly fallen silent ⌞in death⌟.

18 When I said, “My feet are slipping,”
your mercy, O Lord, continued to hold me up.
19 When I worried about many things,
your assuring words soothed my soul.

20 Are wicked rulers who use the law to do unlawful things
able to be your partners?
21 They join forces to take the lives of righteous people.
They condemn innocent people to death.
22 The Lord has become my stronghold.
My God has become my rock of refuge.
23 He has turned their own wickedness against them.
He will destroy them because of their sins.
The Lord our God will destroy them.

95 Come, let’s sing joyfully to the Lord.
Let’s shout happily to the rock of our salvation.
Let’s come into his presence with a song of thanksgiving.
Let’s shout happily to him with psalms.
The Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods.
In his hand are the deep places of the earth,
and the mountain peaks are his.
The sea is his.
He made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let’s worship and bow down.
Let’s kneel in front of the Lord, our maker,
because he is our God
and we are the people in his care,
the flock that he leads.

If only you would listen to him today!
“Do not be stubborn like ⌞my people were⌟ at Meribah,
like the time at Massah in the desert.
Your ancestors challenged me and tested me there,
although they had seen what I had done.
10 For 40 years I was disgusted with those people.
So I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts continue to stray.
They have not learned my ways.’
11 That is why I angrily took this solemn oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest!’ ”

Psalm 93

The Lord reigns,(A) he is robed in majesty;(B)
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;(C)
    indeed, the world is established,(D) firm and secure.(E)
Your throne was established(F) long ago;
    you are from all eternity.(G)

The seas(H) have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;(I)
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.(J)
Mightier than the thunder(K) of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers(L) of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.(M)

Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness(N) adorns your house(O)
    for endless days.

Psalm 94

The Lord is a God who avenges.(P)
    O God who avenges, shine forth.(Q)
Rise up,(R) Judge(S) of the earth;
    pay back(T) to the proud what they deserve.
How long, Lord, will the wicked,
    how long will the wicked be jubilant?(U)

They pour out arrogant(V) words;
    all the evildoers are full of boasting.(W)
They crush your people,(X) Lord;
    they oppress your inheritance.(Y)
They slay the widow(Z) and the foreigner;
    they murder the fatherless.(AA)
They say, “The Lord does not see;(AB)
    the God of Jacob(AC) takes no notice.”

Take notice, you senseless ones(AD) among the people;
    you fools, when will you become wise?
Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
    Does he who formed the eye not see?(AE)
10 Does he who disciplines(AF) nations not punish?
    Does he who teaches(AG) mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knows all human plans;(AH)
    he knows that they are futile.(AI)

12 Blessed is the one you discipline,(AJ) Lord,
    the one you teach(AK) from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble,(AL)
    till a pit(AM) is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not reject his people;(AN)
    he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,(AO)
    and all the upright in heart(AP) will follow it.

16 Who will rise up(AQ) for me against the wicked?
    Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?(AR)
17 Unless the Lord had given me help,(AS)
    I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.(AT)
18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,(AU)
    your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety(AV) was great within me,
    your consolation(AW) brought me joy.

20 Can a corrupt throne(AX) be allied with you—
    a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?(AY)
21 The wicked band together(AZ) against the righteous
    and condemn the innocent(BA) to death.(BB)
22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
    and my God the rock(BC) in whom I take refuge.(BD)
23 He will repay(BE) them for their sins
    and destroy(BF) them for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will destroy them.

Psalm 95

Come,(BG) let us sing for joy(BH) to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud(BI) to the Rock(BJ) of our salvation.
Let us come before him(BK) with thanksgiving(BL)
    and extol him with music(BM) and song.

For the Lord is the great God,(BN)
    the great King(BO) above all gods.(BP)
In his hand are the depths of the earth,(BQ)
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.(BR)

Come, let us bow down(BS) in worship,(BT)
    let us kneel(BU) before the Lord our Maker;(BV)
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,(BW)
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts(BX) as you did at Meribah,[a](BY)
    as you did that day at Massah[b] in the wilderness,(BZ)
where your ancestors tested(CA) me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years(CB) I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,(CC)
    and they have not known my ways.’(CD)
11 So I declared on oath(CE) in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”(CF)

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 95:8 Meribah means quarreling.
  2. Psalm 95:8 Massah means testing.

93 The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever.

94 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.

Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.

Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage.

They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.

Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?

11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law;

13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

17 Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.

18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.

19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?

21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

22 But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.

95 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.

The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.

For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,

Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.

10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:

11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
