I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,(A)
    and I have been saved from my enemies.(B)
The cords of death(C) entangled me;
    the torrents(D) of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
    the snares of death(E) confronted me.

I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

I sink in the miry depths,(A)
    where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
    the floods engulf me.
I am worn out calling for help;(B)
    my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,(C)
    looking for my God.
Those who hate me(D) without reason(E)
    outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,(F)
    those who seek to destroy me.(G)
I am forced to restore
    what I did not steal.

You, God, know my folly;(H)
    my guilt is not hidden from you.(I)

Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    may those who hope in you
    not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
    may those who seek you
    not be put to shame because of me.
For I endure scorn(J) for your sake,(K)
    and shame covers my face.(L)
I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;(M)
for zeal for your house consumes me,(N)
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.(O)
10 When I weep and fast,(P)
    I must endure scorn;
11 when I put on sackcloth,(Q)
    people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate(R) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.(S)

13 But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;(T)
in your great love,(U) O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.(V)
15 Do not let the floodwaters(W) engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up(X)
    or the pit close its mouth over me.(Y)

I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

Psalm 124

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
    let Israel say(A)
if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
the flood(B) would have engulfed us,
    the torrent(C) would have swept over us,
the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

Praise be to the Lord,
    who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird
    from the fowler’s snare;(D)
the snare has been broken,(E)
    and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name(F) of the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven(G) and earth.

124 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Send forth lightning(A) and scatter(B) the enemy;
    shoot your arrows(C) and rout them.
Reach down your hand from on high;(D)
    deliver me and rescue me(E)
from the mighty waters,(F)
    from the hands of foreigners(G)

Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
