43 Why do you not understand [a](A)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (B)listen to My word. 44 (C)You are of (D)your father the devil, and (E)you want to do the desires of your father. (F)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (G)there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells [b]a lie, he (H)speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of [c]lies. 45 But because (I)I say the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (J)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (K)The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 (L)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a (M)Samaritan, and You (N)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (O)have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (P)I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone (Q)follows My word, he will never (R)see death.” 52 (S)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (T)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone (U)follows My word, he will never (V)taste of death.’ 53 You (W)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “(X)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (Y)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (Z)you have not come to know Him, (AA)but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (AB)a liar like you; (AC)but I do know Him, and I (AD)follow His word. 56 (AE)Your father Abraham was (AF)overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 (AG)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham [d]was born, [e](AH)I am.” 59 Therefore they (AI)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus (AJ)hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(B) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(C) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(D) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(E) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Jesus’ Claims About Himself

48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(F) and demon-possessed?”(G)

49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(H) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(I)

52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(J) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(K) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(L) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(M) 55 Though you do not know him,(N) I know him.(O) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(P) 56 Your father Abraham(Q) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(R) and was glad.”

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(S) I am!”(T) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(U) but Jesus hid himself,(V) slipping away from the temple grounds.
