48 (0) A song. A psalm of the descendants of Korach:
2 (1) Great is Adonai
and greatly to be praised,
in the city of our God,
his holy mountain,
3 (2) beautiful in its elevation,
the joy of all the earth,
Mount Tziyon, in the far north,
the city of the great king.
4 (3) In its citadels God
has been revealed as a strong defense.
5 (4) For the kings met by agreement;
together they advanced.
6 (5) They saw and were filled with consternation;
terrified, they took to flight.
7 (6) Trembling took hold of them,
pains like those of a woman in labor,
8 (7) as when the wind out of the east
wrecks the “Tarshish” ships.
9 (8) We heard it, and now we see for ourselves
in the city of Adonai-Tzva’ot,
in the city of our God.
May God establish it forever. (Selah)
10 (9) God, within your temple
we meditate on your grace.
11 (10) God, your praise, like your name,
extends to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is filled with righteousness.
12 (11) Let Mount Tziyon rejoice,
let the daughters of Y’hudah be glad,
because of your judgment [on the enemy].
13 (12) Walk through Tziyon, go all around it;
count how many towers it has.
14 (13) Note its ramparts, pass through its citadels,
so that you can tell generations to come
15 (14) that such is God, our God forever;
he will guide us eternally.
49 (0) For the leader. A psalm of the descendants of Korach:
2 (1) Hear this, all you peoples!
Listen, everyone living on earth,
3 (2) regardless of whether low or high,
regardless of whether rich or poor!
4 (3) My mouth is about to speak wisdom;
my heart’s deepest thoughts will give understanding.
5 (4) I will listen with care to [God’s] parable,
I will set my enigma to the music of the lyre.
6 (5) Why should I fear when the days bring trouble,
when the evil of my pursuers surrounds me,
7 (6) the evil of those who rely on their wealth
and boast how rich they are?
8 (7) No one can ever redeem his brother
or give God a ransom for him ,
9 (8) because the price for him is too high
(leave the idea completely alone!)
10 (9) to have him live on eternally
and never see the pit.
11 (10) For he can see that wise men will die,
likewise the fool and the brute will perish
and leave their wealth to others.
12 (11) They think their homes will last forever,
their dwellings through all generations;
they give their own names to their estates.
13 (12) But people, even rich ones, will live only briefly;
then, like animals, they will die.
14 (13) This is the manner of life of the foolish
and those who come after, approving their words. (Selah)
15 (14) Like sheep, they are destined for Sh’ol;
death will be their shepherd.
The upright will rule them in the morning;
and their forms will waste away in Sh’ol,
until they need no dwelling.
16 (15) But God will redeem me from Sh’ol’s control,
because he will receive me. (Selah)
17 (16) Don’t be afraid when someone gets rich,
when the wealth of his family grows.
18 (17) For when he dies, he won’t take it with him;
his wealth will not go down after him.
19 (18) True, while he lived, he thought himself happy —
people praise you when you do well for yourself —
20 (19) but he will join his ancestors’ generations
and never again see light.
21 (20) People, even rich ones, can fail to grasp
that, like animals, they will die.
50 (0) A psalm of Asaf:
(1) The Mighty One, God, Adonai, is speaking,
summoning the world from east to west.
2 Out of Tziyon, the perfection of beauty,
God is shining forth.
3 Our God is coming and not staying silent.
With a fire devouring ahead of him
and a great storm raging around him,
4 he calls to the heavens above and to earth,
in order to judge his people.
5 “Gather to me my faithful,
those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for God himself is judge. (Selah)
7 “Listen, my people, I am speaking:
Isra’el, I am testifying against you,
I, God, your God.
8 I am not rebuking you for your sacrifices;
your burnt offerings are always before me.
9 I have no need for a bull from your farm
or for male goats from your pens;
10 for all forest creatures are mine already,
as are the animals on a thousand hills;
11 I know all the birds in the mountains;
whatever moves in the fields is mine.
12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you;
for the world is mine, and everything in it.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer thanksgiving as your sacrifice to God,
pay your vows to the Most High,
15 and call on me when you are in trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
16 But to the wicked God says:
“What right do you have to proclaim my laws
or take my covenant on your lips,
17 when you so hate to receive instruction
and fling my words behind you?
18 When you see a thief, you join up with him,
you throw in your lot with adulterers,
19 you give your mouth free rein for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit;
20 you sit and speak against your kinsman,
you slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you do such things, should I stay silent?
You may have thought I was just like you;
but I will rebuke and indict you to your face.
22 Consider this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to save you.
23 “Whoever offers thanksgiving
as his sacrifice honors me;
and to him who goes the right way
I will show the salvation of God.”

1 Great is the Lord,(A) and most worthy of praise,(B)
in the city of our God,(C) his holy mountain.(D)
2 Beautiful(E) in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[b](F) is Mount Zion,(G)
the city of the Great King.(H)
3 God is in her citadels;(I)
he has shown himself to be her fortress.(J)
4 When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,(K)
5 they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.(L)
6 Trembling seized(M) them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(N)
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(O)
shattered by an east wind.(P)
8 As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
forever.[c](Q)
9 Within your temple, O God,
we meditate(R) on your unfailing love.(S)
10 Like your name,(T) O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;(U)
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.(V)

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1 Hear(AB) this, all you peoples;(AC)
listen, all who live in this world,(AD)
2 both low and high,(AE)
rich and poor alike:
3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(AF)
the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(AG)
4 I will turn my ear to a proverb;(AH)
with the harp(AI) I will expound my riddle:(AJ)
5 Why should I fear(AK) when evil days come,
when wicked deceivers surround me—
6 those who trust in their wealth(AL)
and boast(AM) of their great riches?(AN)
7 No one can redeem the life of another
or give to God a ransom for them—
8 the ransom(AO) for a life is costly,
no payment is ever enough—(AP)
9 so that they should live on(AQ) forever
and not see decay.(AR)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(AS)
that the foolish and the senseless(AT) also perish,
leaving their wealth(AU) to others.(AV)
11 Their tombs(AW) will remain their houses[e] forever,
their dwellings for endless generations,(AX)
though they had[f] named(AY) lands after themselves.
13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(BB)
and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[g]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(BC) to die;(BD)
death will be their shepherd
(but the upright will prevail(BE) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(BF)
he will surely take me to himself.(BG)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(BH) with them when they die,
their splendor will not descend with them.(BI)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(BJ)
and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(BK)
who will never again see the light(BL) of life.
Psalm 50
A psalm of Asaph.
1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord,(BO)
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets.(BP)
2 From Zion,(BQ) perfect in beauty,(BR)
God shines forth.(BS)
3 Our God comes(BT)
and will not be silent;(BU)
a fire devours(BV) before him,(BW)
and around him a tempest(BX) rages.
4 He summons the heavens above,
and the earth,(BY) that he may judge his people:(BZ)
5 “Gather to me this consecrated people,(CA)
who made a covenant(CB) with me by sacrifice.”
6 And the heavens proclaim(CC) his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice.[h][i](CD)
7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify(CE) against you, Israel:
I am God, your God.(CF)
8 I bring no charges(CG) against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings,(CH) which are ever before me.
9 I have no need of a bull(CI) from your stall
or of goats(CJ) from your pens,(CK)
10 for every animal of the forest(CL) is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.(CM)
11 I know every bird(CN) in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields(CO) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world(CP) is mine, and all that is in it.(CQ)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?
14 “Sacrifice thank offerings(CR) to God,
fulfill your vows(CS) to the Most High,(CT)
15 and call(CU) on me in the day of trouble;(CV)
I will deliver(CW) you, and you will honor(CX) me.”
16 But to the wicked person, God says:
“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant(CY) on your lips?(CZ)
17 You hate(DA) my instruction
and cast my words behind(DB) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join(DC) with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers.(DD)
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit.(DE)
20 You sit and testify against your brother(DF)
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,(DG)
you thought I was exactly[j] like you.
But I now arraign(DH) you
and set my accusations(DI) before you.

48 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
3 God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
4 For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.
5 They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.
6 Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.
9 We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
10 According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.

3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
