Prayer for the Punishment of the Wicked.

For the music director; set to [a]Al-tashheth. A [b]Mikhtam of David.

58 Do you indeed [c]speak righteousness, you [d]gods?
Do you (A)judge [e]fairly, you sons of mankind?
No, in heart you (B)practice injustice;
On earth you (C)clear a way for the violence of your hands.
The wicked have turned away (D)from the womb;
These who speak lies (E)go astray from [f]birth.
They have venom like the (F)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
So that it (G)does not hear the voice of [g](H)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

God, (I)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, Lord.
May they (J)flow away like water that runs off;
When he [h](K)aims his arrows, may they be as [i]headless shafts.
May they be like a snail which goes along in slime,
Like the (L)miscarriage of a woman that never sees the sun.
Before your (M)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will (N)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the [j]green and the burning alike.

10 The (O)righteous will rejoice when he (P)sees vengeance;
He will (Q)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 And people will say, “There certainly is [k](R)a reward for the righteous;
There certainly is a God who (S)judges on the earth!”

Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.

For the music director; set to [l]Al-tashheth. A [m]Mikhtam of David, [n]when Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to kill him.

59 (T)Rescue me from my enemies, my God;
[o](U)Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
Rescue me from (V)those who practice injustice,
And save me from (W)men of bloodshed.
For behold, they (X)have [p]set an ambush for my [q]life;
[r]Fierce men (Y)attack me,
(Z)Not for my wrongdoing nor for my sin, Lord,
[s](AA)For no guilt of mine, they run and take their stand against me.
(AB)Stir Yourself to [t]help me, and see!
You, (AC)Lord God of armies, the God of Israel,
Awake to [u](AD)punish all the nations;
(AE)Do not be gracious to any who deal treacherously in wrongdoing. Selah
They (AF)return at evening, they howl like a (AG)dog,
And prowl around the city.
Behold, they (AH)gush forth with their mouths;
(AI)Swords are in their lips,
For, they say, “(AJ)Who hears?”
But You, Lord, (AK)laugh at them;
You (AL)scoff at all the nations.

Because of [v]his (AM)strength I will watch for You,
For God is my (AN)refuge.
10 [w]My God (AO)in His faithfulness will meet me;
God will let me (AP)look triumphantly upon my enemies.
11 Do not kill them, (AQ)or my people will forget;
[x](AR)Scatter them by Your power and bring them down,
Lord, (AS)our shield.
12 [y]On account of the (AT)sin of their mouths and the words of their lips,
May they even be (AU)caught in their pride,
And on account of (AV)curses and lies which they tell.
13 [z](AW)Destroy them in wrath, [aa]destroy them so that they will no longer exist;
So that people may (AX)know that God [ab]rules in Jacob,
To the ends of the earth. Selah
14 They (AY)return at evening, they howl like a dog,
And prowl around the city.
15 They (AZ)wander about [ac]for food
And [ad]murmur if they are not satisfied.

16 But as for me, I will (BA)sing of Your strength;
Yes, I will (BB)joyfully sing of Your faithfulness in the (BC)morning,
For You have been my (BD)refuge
And a (BE)place of refuge on the day of my distress.
17 (BF)My strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my (BG)refuge, the [ae]God who shows me favor.

Psalm 58[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b]

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?(A)
    Do you judge people with equity?
No, in your heart you devise injustice,(B)
    and your hands mete out violence on the earth.(C)

Even from birth the wicked go astray;
    from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
Their venom is like the venom of a snake,(D)
    like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
that will not heed(E) the tune of the charmer,(F)
    however skillful the enchanter may be.

Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;(G)
    Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!(H)
Let them vanish like water that flows away;(I)
    when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.(J)
May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,(K)
    like a stillborn child(L) that never sees the sun.

Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns(M)
    whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.[c](N)
10 The righteous will be glad(O) when they are avenged,(P)
    when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.(Q)
11 Then people will say,
    “Surely the righteous still are rewarded;(R)
    surely there is a God who judges the earth.”(S)

Psalm 59[d]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[e] When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house(T) in order to kill him.

Deliver me from my enemies, O God;(U)
    be my fortress against those who are attacking me.(V)
Deliver me from evildoers(W)
    and save me from those who are after my blood.(X)

See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire(Y) against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
I have done no wrong,(Z) yet they are ready to attack me.(AA)
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!(AB)
You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,(AC)
rouse yourself(AD) to punish all the nations;(AE)
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.[f](AF)

They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,(AG)
    and prowl about the city.
See what they spew from their mouths(AH)
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,(AI)
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”(AJ)
But you laugh at them, Lord;(AK)
    you scoff at all those nations.(AL)

You are my strength,(AM) I watch for you;
    you, God, are my fortress,(AN)
10     my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[g](AO)
    or my people will forget.(AP)
In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.(AQ)
12 For the sins of their mouths,(AR)
    for the words of their lips,(AS)
    let them be caught in their pride.(AT)
For the curses and lies they utter,
13     consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.(AU)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.(AV)

14 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food(AW)
    and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing(AX) of your strength,(AY)
    in the morning(AZ) I will sing of your love;(BA)
for you are my fortress,(BB)
    my refuge in times of trouble.(BC)

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
    my God on whom I can rely.(BD)
